@roseblacke5803 Agree 100%. This is the first time I have seen this performance and was wondering why Burton was holding back, but then it hit me that he didn't want to upstage Lenny. A legend and a gentleman - indeed! 💌
Man, all the "big" hits Cummings and Bachman had. When man recording artists had trouble filling an entire "Greatest Hits" album with "real" hits, The Guess Who had no trouble at all.
Don't forget "Brave Belt", "Ironhorse", "Union", "Bachman", "Bachman & Turner", "Bachman & Cummings" and as a solo artist. Randy also produced Canadian 1970's hard rock band "Trooper" and he has his own radio show in Canada called"Randy's Vinyl Tap".
For those of you who do not know the story of how this song was written, look it up. It is one of the more incredible tales to come out of rock and roll. Oh and also, don’t believe critics or what you read online, where you will learn that they didn’t put out anything good after about 1971 or maybe 1972. These guys continue to put out great rock ‘n’ roll records especially throughout the entire 1970s, and beyond. Even with some of the disputes and changing lineups, and even without Burton on a couple of them, they still put out good music because they never lost sight of what makes a good rock album, and what people will respond to. And their music is very varied from the whimsical to the very dark. They really belong more in the category of Zappa, or The Tubes, or similar bands as much as they do with the meet and (hopefully Au-gratin) potatoes rock bands that they are more typically associated with.
This song written by Canadian Burton Cummings is about Canadians portraying America as a seductress. The song speaks to how Canadians were feeling about the Vietnam War and the impact and dominance of American Culture on Canada during the 70's. " I don't need your war machines, I don't need your ghetto scenes, colored lights can hypnotize, sparkle someone else's eyes." - says it all.
Great group, great song. Remember this song well back in 1970, when I was 15 yrs old. Thanks Guess Who, greetings from Charleston, West Virginia, USA 🇺🇸🇨🇦

It was cool to bring back Burton, Randy & the rest of The Guess Who with Lenny K. American Woman has always been a classic rock son...it had a funk to it that just stood out. Now Lenny's taken it a step further...that's the ultimate compliment from one artist to the originators.
this country needs to celabrate our famous bands of the 60's. they brought great music from england and the US. we celabrate all the old bands and singers, why not bands from the 60's????????????????????????????????
If memory serves me, this was at the Canadian music awards, and they missed an opportunity to make it a huge surprise. Kravitz's version was at the top of the charts and they were expected to play. Instead of the announcer (before this vid starts) saying "here's Kravitz with the Guess Who" and having the GW stand in the dark shadows but visible for the first part, they could have just announced Kravitz and dropped or pulled back a curtain for a surprise appearance by the Guess Who when it came their time. Lenny had balls to cover the vocals in this song. His cover never really attacked like the original for good reason (Burton Cummings), yet is was a good cover. This is a really good live version, stay with it to the end, it rewards.

Not at all. Cummings said on tour he noticed the girls from the US were more “grown up looking” than the girls in Canada & the song was supposed to be about Canadian women but it came out American Woman. He also said that at a show of The Guess Who, he was outside trying to score from 45 records from a collector when the band just started playing this riff & he had to run to get onstage & American Woman came out of that.
