  • How to diagnose, remove and replace a faulty Ignition coil on a 2002 to 2009 Volkswagen Polo Mk4 (9N), with the 1.4 litre petrol engine, using a basic OBD 2 code scanner and phone app. If your engine has a faulty ignition coil it could cause the engine to misfire or even backfire. You may have a rough idle, lack of power, poor fuel economy and it will probably illuminate the 'Check Engine Light' on your dashboard.
Common ignition coil fault codes include:
    P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
    P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
    P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
    P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
    P0351 - Ignition Coil (A) Cylinder 1 Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
    P0352 - Ignition Coil (B) Cylinder 2 Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
    P0353 - Ignition Coil (C) Cylinder 3 Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
    P0354 - Ignition Coil (D) Cylinder 4 Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

Thank you for the excellent video. Had to doublecheck after i changed the plugs+coolant sensor yesterday(very hard to start now during winter). Didn’t help AND now…a day later my check engine light came on with a little bit of rough idle. Ran fine after the small service yesterday…waiting for a obd tool in the mail. Any suggestions? Made sure of all were mounted correctly. Airhoses, knocksensor and so on….

You'll probably need to find out what code is triggering the engine light. Check out this link, it might give you some useful suggestions: uk-polos.net/viewtopic.php?t=76855

Just got to 101k miles on my polo,
Got piston slap but she’s running fine apart from that,
Should I look at replacing coils as preventative maintenance? Or just wait till one goes?

You'd really need to diagnose exactly what's causing the slap before changing any coils

      @@screwsnutsandbolts Worn rings I’m guessing,
It only does it for a min or 2 and it’s not majorly loud

Is it possible then that a slight fault may not trigger the light on the dashboard? Ive possibly got a faulty coil but no light has come on. new plugs didnt help. Really good figures all round on compression test.

Yes sometimes I found, with the VW Golf and Polo, that the faulty coil didn't cause the engine light to come on. I'm not quite sure why though.

@@screwsnutsandboltsHello friend, I have an error in cylinder N°3, vw polo 9n, I checked with obd2, but I would like to be sure if it is the coil... question: if I change the coil to another cylinder N°2, and the error appears on n2, does it mean I have to replace the coil? am I correct? hug🫡
