I cant imagine how difficult it is to raise and bond with a puppy that you know you have to give away. It definitely takes a very special kind of person. Good for them. Hopefully they continue to raise more.
Ice heard it compared to sending your kid to college! I want to raise a service dog someday, it's been on my bucket list since I was 5 or 6 years old.

It's hard, but easier the more you do. I've done 3 through guide dogs for the blind
I feel like I could do it. As long as it's okay if you have other dogs. Which I don't actually think is a good idea because my "good" dog definitely picked up bad habits from the "bad" dog. Lol 😂
@@Upper_echelon_exotics moat guide dog schools are okay with it since some blind people have pets with bad behaviors. As long as the dog gets good training and knows it'd not allowed to do the bad things essentially.
As a puppy raiser (for another organization) it can be hard to give up the dog but videos like this, and honestly every service dog video Molly makes reminds me why. If anyone is interested in being a puppy raiser, there are organizations around the world that always need volunteers to help raise puppies to become service dogs and I encourage you to look into it as its an amazing experience.
I definitely want to try it one day. I think service dogs are incredible and I want to be part of their amazing journey.

Wow this was so emotional! It’s like Elton John really was a happy son showing off his bride to his parents! He is like - ‘look I got my own blind human- isn’t she awesome, you are right, I love helping her so much!’ You can tell he is your soulpup - he knew it the minute he laid eyes on you! It’s like God let him choose his blind human before he was born and he knew immediately you were the one he chose ‘it’s her, it’s her - yay I found her!’

The love they have for Elton John! As a French Canadian native, I understood all they were saying to the dog and there were such loving words and little sweet nicknames in the air, it made me feel fuzzy inside!
This was so heartwarming! Also funny to see how Elton John has sitting habits with Molly he didn't seem to have with his foster family as much. Sitting in her lap facing outwards, while he seems to sit in their laps facing them!
I think he knows it’s his roll to be her eyes, so he looks outward. I’m sure he sits on her to claim her. I think we’re all in for a glorious show with Molly and Elton John as their relationship grows.

I was a puppy raiser of two puppies during college, currently taking a break as I'm in grad school in a different country. Meeting their people made it all worth it to me, truly seeing the impact they have. My first was attached at my hip and would only listen to me when I was around, but the first time I met his graduate in person about a year after I saw him last because of covid his focus was all on her, even if it was him complaining the floor was cold 😅 but I knew he had the perfect match. My second loves everyone, but was in shock when he saw me that he just laid there staring at me for a second when he normally says hi to everyone immediately 😂 but he was so excited to show off all his advanced commands. I also have a large tattoo of them both on my leg, because I'm just so proud of them and the work I put into raising.
This was the hardest video for me to watch and I was crying because as of right now I don’t have my four legged baby another family does and she is about to be 1 soon so I could just relate so much. I just felt all the emotion in this video. I could feel the pain that guy was feeling it’s never easy giving up a dog
Grooming tip for long haired dogs: for dealing with de-shedding them, using either Equigroomer or an undercoat rake has been really helpful for me in the past with my personal dogs and dogs I've worked with at the doggie daycare and the animal rescue league I worked at

I thought it would be most common for the puppy raisers to see their trained pup again? I can’t imagine how tough that would be to not reunite? :( you are very special humans for sure
@@Andyyoureastar some schools don't really allow it and it's up to graduate to reach out usually in other programs. As a raiser I've been really grateful to have a relationship with the dogs I raised and the people who have them now.
@@Andyyoureastar as Makayla said below, some schools allow it, some don’t. The school I raise for guarantees one conversation with the handler following the match, but it is entirely up to them whether they keep in contact. It’s worth it to change someone’s life, but yes, it is very difficult.
The way you talk to Elton while you're brushing him and the way he's looking at you with so much love is just so sweet! I can see you two bonding already :)

I hope these lovely folks fill their lives with a forever dog. While I think it’s wonderful what they did for EJ, it tugged on my heart to see them struggling. I hope they can fill their heart and home with a new dog because they are clearly very caring folks.
Being able to follow Elton John through your social media platforms must be so special for the puppy raisers. We fostered kittens a while back and it would be so nice if we could see pictures now and then to see how things are and what they look like today.
I foster pets & it’s so great to see from this perspective. It’s so great to meet with who the pet is being given away to. This is what I enjoy about fostering pets. Many ask if I get attached & yes I do but then seeing where they’re going to knowing they’ll be fine & it is meant to be for them is what reminds me why I do what I do ❤️❤️
Lovely people and I can really see now why you choose Elton John as your guide dog. He has a little bit of a therapy dog talent and is a good mix between Gallop and Ben. How amazing also that he is an experienced traveler. Having raised a puppy myself, I know how much work it is :D and I just can imagine how much more pressure there is when this dog will be a guide dog potentially.
Yes, the more I get to know him the more I see both Gallop and Ben in him, in all the best ways! He's super calm like Gallop, but can be a bit silly too, like Ben. His experience with travel is one of the many reasons the trainers had him as their top choice for me!
Hey Molly! Long time follower here and also a proffesional dog groomer! I suggest investing in a good quality long-pin slicker brush, it will really help with maintaining his coat as well as getting lots of undercoat out so he doesn't shed as much. I recommend the Chris Christensen Big G Coral brush. It's worth the price and I use mine every day and it's amazing!

The possibility of getting too attached to the puppy is why I can’t be a puppy raiser!😂😂 Those two trainers are amazing souls. I hope they cherish their memories. EJ is even better for the seemingly close attachment they raised him with. The man’s emotional state got me teary!

I knew since I need a service dog, I would not be able to handle being a puppy raiser. Emotionally and I can only focus on training my SD and Maintaining her training.

the guy is so me if i were a raiser , getting a tattoo of my fosters. i've considered fostering for so long but as an independant disabled woman i don't ever want to commit to such an important job if i can't do it right i mean these are beautiful living creatures. but i imagine i would have a hard time too like the guy. love to them and you molly! so sweet! love these two sweethearts

Seeing the excitement of him laying down holding himself back and then going in for all the loves when he knew he was allowed, I started tearing up too!! Great, amazing, loving people are his fosters! This entire thing is what life is about. The connections, ALLL the emotions, and helping one another in this journey called life! Gosh this was one of the most heartwarming videos EVER Molly!! 💓💗❤️
I have kind of a similar situation, but in the opposite way. My grandma passed away in May. She had a dog and a cat. My Aunt took the dog, but none of us could take the cat. She ended up getting dropped off at the local Humane Society, which was my fear. I didn't want them to do that (I had a fostering situation set up already, they knew that, but took her to the Humane Society anyways) because she's an older cat. I was so afraid she wouldn't get adopted. I checked her profile every couple of days to see if it was still up. She was there for quite a while, until one day, a couple weeks ago, her profile was gone! I was just hoping she got adopted. The local Humane Society does a "This is who was adopted this week" post on Facebook, and she was on it! I immediately went to put a comment on it, thanking the person/people that adopted her, but they had ALREADY commented on it, with an update on her! I commented on their comment, thanking them directly and they immediately messaged me and I've kept in contact with them! They actually said they were going to see if they could try to find her previous family! They give me updates and pictures and she's living her best retirement life now and it makes me cry happy tears every time I think about that. AND they are going to let me go visit with her next week! I am going to be a sobbing mess, seeing her again. I was so close with my grandma and it has been rough without her. I was her primary caregiver and I've been a little lost not having her around anymore. My weekends feel so empty without going over to her house and helping her
What wonderful people!! It definitely takes special people to be able to raise such an amazing dog knowing that you will have to give him up one day. I don't think I would be able to do it. I know it was probably very hard for them by the looks of it. I hope they can heal from the heartbreak of it. Elton John obviously loves them very much. If it wasn't for people like them, programs like this wouldn't exist. So thank you to them!
Whew! I bawled when I saw what a beautiful bond Elton John had with his first parents! That was a rough one emotionally for me! Those people made such a beautiful sacrifice! Im glad you got him! But my heart breaks for them as well! I cried really hard when theu put their mattress on the ground their last 2 weeks with him and it straight killed me!

It is incredible the independence these dogs can provide. Molly’s videos are so eye opening to the impact. It wouldn’t be possible without the puppy raisers.

I have had several long haired cats including two who shed like big dogs. The brushes Mira gave you are great. You wanna use the wider spaced combs for detangling the top coat and the closer teethed ones for attacking the undercoat. For long haired flufflers, that undercoat is what sucks in Southern California heat. Leading with your hand and feeling with your fingers is the best way to make sure you're getting through the coat and daily brushings -constant summer means constant shedding. You don't have to do a big brushing everyday but weekly or monthly depending on how he feels and sheds. Also treats to associate brushing with a good time. My favorite one was a flipping one with the two types I mentioned above; it was one before the furminator. For the finer teethed combs be careful with how sharp they are, sometimes the teeth are shaped in a way thats not comfortable for their skin. Hope that helps! 🐾💙🐚

I have had my foster for 7 months now in November she will be leaving me to go train full time. My girl is being trained as a mobility/ seizure response dog I have been sending her future mom Pictures and videos on how she is doing and learning, I will miss her when she leaves i might still see her when I go for volunteering at the organization. I hope to get a new puppy next year to foster again.

As a person who has two long haired dogs (Australian shepherds) brushing every day and finding a good spray on hair conditioner for dogs is life changing!!

I love this!! 🥰 They did a great job with Elton John. I was a puppy raiser, but our organization wouldn’t let us meet the handlers after the puppy went back. My puppy died a month before we sent her back (a genetic issue), so I feel like I never finished the task. I’d love to raise more puppies if I could and I’d like to find an organization that lets me keep in touch with the new handler.
Losing vision and and have taught my golden retriever to do certain guide tasks. She’s a golden retriever so very long hair😂. I always just run my hand along her coat (this physical touch is sooo good for bonding). I’ve taught her to turn around when I want to brush certain parts of her body like her front and her bootie. All the nail trimming and haircuts I leave to our groomer 😅

It's so cool that you get to meet your dog's foster families! Is that a common practice for Mira? I was a puppy raiser during high school for Pilot Dogs and never got to meet their new owners when they were placed.

We have done “puppy starter” and “puppy camper” for The Guide Dog Foundation and I cannot express how difficult it is to get the dogs to pee and poo on pavement! I am in awe of puppy raisers for all the hard work they put in. But even for the short periods we have completed (about a month at a time) it’s totally worth it! Best wishes for your future with Elton John!
As someone with a guide dog from the Guide Dog Foundation, thank you! My dog (Marigold) will go on pavement when told to, but she vastly prefers grass. I can’t imagine how hard it is to get the puppies to go on pavement!
I know nothing of guide dogs. I'm just curious, why do they train them to go potty on the pavement instead of the grass?
@@melissabaliva2989 just because there isn't grass readily available everywhere. They're trained to go on command wherever they are. It could be the park, but just as easily be at the airport (I think Molly has actually mentioned this in an earlier video with Gallop)
The puppy trainers told us that because 1. They need to be able to go on command anywhere and 2. that picking up poop in the grass is messy and difficult for blind folks…

Get a good undercoat rake brush and a slicker brush. Maybe a leave in coat conditioner.

They did such a great job raising Elton. It takes one hell of a great person to raise a puppy for someone else, those two seem like they put their hearts and souls into turning Elton into who he is.
I didn't expect to be sobbing, but I am. You can just see the love they poured into him and he to them in turn. All that love they gave him so that he knew how to love you well.
I'll be honest I dont know what i thought happened with the dogs while they were young but i never considered them being in foster homes. I have such respect for people who can foster animals, treat them like their own, and then give them to loving families/people

A furminator can be good for heavy shedding in monitored use! Overusing it can thin your dogs hair out like a razor, but other than that, so long as you're sure it's just getting what it needs in typically a few passes in each spot, good choice.
Would be cool if they did zoom visits or meet ups periodically with Elton
This legit had me crying so hard. I puppy raised my first guide dog and he went back in the early spring for his formal training. I miss him so much. Thank you so much for sharing this Molly.

Puppy raisers are amazing. I could never do what they do because I know I’d get way too attached to the puppy and not be able to give them back. Such an important and necessary job though!! So glad I’m able to follow your journey and love watching these videos.
For long hair grooming tip use a horse's shedding brush. They make them for dogs too.
How he freaked out just proves that dogs miss people and when they get taken away from their owners, they can’t do anything about it ☹️. It just makes me wonder if he was truly happy while at Mira before meeting Molly

Groomer here, highly suggest getting a "slicker brush". It'll help tons more than a comb!

I think Mira uses the phrase "Foster family" because there's a French equivalent that is "famille d'accueil" (welcome family). Puppy raisers would be longer to say in French and doesn't sound as natural as "famille d'accueil"
