A group of rich men carry young women who are willing to follow them to a luxury island, do drugs but somehow, we are expected to believe these women don't want to have sex so the men have to R-ape them ?cause the luxury, alcohol, drugs are not enough to get them laid ? I just ask that we at least respect the message behind this film, I know it's hard as men to understand what it's like to be a woman at the mercy of such sadist situations, but being an assault victim myself, this movie really hit different for me. I am always open to people's opinions, but just remember that this movie covers very sensitive topics that involves trauma that every day women experience and have to go through. I love how empowering the women were in this movie especially frida. I feel like men are going to think the ending was stupid because you have no idea what it feels like to be in frida's shoes or her perspective. I loved watching her take the power reigns after knowing that slater was abusing his seat in the power chair. This movie is indeed for all the women who have been battered and abused by men, and must overcome their trauma, hold their heads up high, and take these bastards down for treating us as inferior. So while anyone is bashing this movie just at least keep that in mind. I rest my case.

@@mushroomchocolate3754 1. I mentioned the message of the film in my review and said that intention and execution are completely different. I got the message I just don't think it was done well. 2. Be careful assuming men "have no idea" what it's like to be in that situation, men get abused too. Once again I get the ending as well and why it was made, I just think it makes Frida unlikeable and just as bad as he is. Reciprocating abuse is a terrible message imo

  • @thesavagealpaca3374
    @thesavagealpaca3374 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I really can’t get behind the majority of these points. In terms of the likability of the cast, the morality of all the characters is all pretty nuanced (even the girls). For example, Frita manipulated her way into obtaining money and power at the end, instead of bringing Slater to justice. Sarah wasn’t that nice of a person either, consumed and obsessed with Slater’s wealth and status. They were all selfish and morally ambiguous characters whether they were abused or not. Slater being the most likable character works because his charm diverts us away from the end twist. I enjoyed the cinematography, acting, and pacing and think the movie did a very good job of adding nuance to the story instead of making it black and white/good and evil.

    • @SeanKennyYT
      @SeanKennyYT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I just don't think the twist works because its so obvious where this movie is going to go. After they tell you the twist in the opening scene, you're watching a guy who is the most likeable of them all while you already know he's terrible. Just not sure what the movie was trying to accomplish honestly

@@SeanKennyYT yea I guess. I got lucky because I basically went in blind, no trailer or plot at all, and I didn’t really read the warning at the start. That might’ve contributed to why I enjoyed the twist a lot more because I was genuinely unsure of what would happen.

Hard disagree about the acting. If you're not familiar with what trauma related dissociation looks like, I get how the womens' acting looks stilted and off.
However, from a trauma informed perspective, those performances are bone chillingly accurate.
This movie was as accurate a depiction of traumatic dissociation as i think I've ever seen on film, and I work with survivors for a living.
For example, a very common trauma response for women isnt fight, flight or freeze. It's "fawn" and Frida was literally fawning over Slater.
Is that choice as subtle as a brick to the face? Yeah. But I think it works for the story Zoe wanted to tell. There is nothing subtle or nuanced about the real life analogs to this movie. As we're seeing yet again with the Diddy indictments.
The film didn't pull its punches with its depictions of SA. However unlike many films that tackle similar subjects * cough cough Blonde cough cough *, the depiction of violence never felt revictimizing or gratuitous.
That's a VERY hard needle to thread, and IMO Zoe Kravitz nailed it.
I also think the inclusion of Lucas is an important but overlooked element of the film. He is as much of a victim as the women are. For one he is the only guy being drugged. Its clear that he was brutalized during that off screen "fishing trip". Hes also younger than the other men and doesn't occupy a position of power, so he was an easy target.
But since he's a man, his trauma is not taken as seriously, and he doesn't have the same support that the women have. When Slater basically gaslit the poor kid into believing that he's complicit and not a victim, my heart broke.
Its very rare to see male victims depicted in these kinds of movies.
The more I think about this movie, the more I notice and the more impressed I am with how meticulously this film is constructed, and all the set ups and payoffs seeded throughout the film. For example, in his apology interview at the start of the movie, Slater says "sometimes you have to stop and smell the flowers." He's basically telling the world how he's going to keep getting away with figurative and literal murder.
It reminded me of that infamous Diddy interview with Conan from back in the day (Early 2000s maybe?). Diddy literally describes drugging and trapping women on national television and plays it off as a quirky joke. It reinforces how seemingly untouchable these men are. They flaunt their ability to hide in plain sight.
That said I can see why people might hate this movie. It's a style of filmmaking that isn't everyone's thing.
But, to answer your question about who this movie's audience is? Me. I am this movie's audience.

Tells me 2 things: 1 SHE doesn’t even know who she’s making this for. 2 the casting, movie, and hell even their relationship at this point seemed like we’re just used to sell “his charm” as a movie plot as well as boosting her ratings by the message and doing some “power couple “ bs for views.

Here's the thing, from a character POV, the movie is okay topretty good.
From a thematic standpoint, its AWFUL when sending a message. Like you said "who is the novie for". I think it could've been better if she turned him in asjustice for all the other victims, realizing that being "seen" is not worth it. Her whole character (The MC) is about not being invisible and being popular andgaving power for once.
However what she did was very IN CHARACTER. Here's the thing that isn't stated. The main villain (played by Tatum) noted in the movie he was trying to forget anything before he turned 10. He was probably abused as a child.
So you have this main villain who takes their trauma and dumps it on others as a coping mechanism which is part of why he has a therapist so that he can disassociate what he went through as a child from what he's doing to "them".
However the MC effectively, based on the ending, flips the script and uses the abused abuser's own tactics against him and now the MC becomes the new abuser because of how her character was set up. Heck, the MC even makes a reference to how her friend should "stop going back to the same guy" when the MC does the EXACT thing she told her friend (shelly) NOT to do both knowingly (later in the movie) and unknowingly (the reason they end up on the island).
The real loser is Shelly who was not only being manipulated by her best friend but then abused by those on the island and gaslighted. There's no closure for Shelly's charactsr who is the real victim, TWICE, and that's why i both dislike the movie but also would say based on the character set-up; it makes SENSE why it ended the way it did.
It is a multifaceted movie which does require more than just surface-analysis but even picking up on queues, it's still a bad movie for how it delivers its message and premise.
I would've liked even a cliche ending where she sues the guy and shows all the photo evidence to the police and wins a class action law suit and gets rich and the recognition she gets from that bit donates it to a charity that helps SA victims and names it after her friend. That would be out of character but it would be DEVELOPMENT.
Idk, weird take from the movie.

The movie was decent up until the reveal. The reveal was too dark for me personally. I think it was too dark for anyone, objectively, unless ur into sick ish like that. The fact the actor had to act that out and the camera showed up way was happening. Made me sick to my stomach. I’m like wow this was the plot twist ?!? Why? What was the purpose of this movie fr. Was it to shed light on creeps? Idek. Movie just felt like a waste of time.
Aesthetically the movie has great cinematography and wardrobe. The protagonist didn’t even become a protagonist until the movie was almost over lol…
And if they were all given the memory juice at the same times. How is possible for any one of them to remember anything or know to rebel, or realize something is not right. Or have any concept of time. How is the memory blackout so selective towards trauma but not anything else? I get it’s just a movie . But the movie tried to be more than a movie when it used such a serious subject matter and leave the audience with a message. I feel like when movies do such a thing the writers/directors have to understand the movie will and should be critiqued harshly if executed is poor or even mediocre.
Imagine a subpar civil rights movie the audience would hate it. They’ll say why even make the movie if is gonna be poorly executed. I believe films with such strong emotional subject matter should be handled seriously if wanted to be takin serious. They should also be well made enough to be nominated for best picture in my opinion.

I just watched this movie. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all, but I enjoyed it. But I do have some nitpicks. If this memory loss potion is so strong, why did they need to kill the women? Why didn’t they just force them to take the memory loss potion & forget everything? When the women take the snake venom does it make them immune to potion indefinitely? Also did the men force the women to take more of the potion after they assaulted them? Because we only see the Frieda use the perfume in the morning so wouldn’t she remember what happened the previous night, before she puts on the perfume? Or is that why they put the flower in their food at dinner so it kicks in later? Like I said these are just nitpicks but I do think the memory loss flower could’ve been flushed out more.

totally agree with you. felt crazy bc everyone said this was so good and i couldn't see it at all! the script seemed like it was written once over and then never touched again. i'm not over the odd "you did nothing" bit with the blonde guy at the end. while i was over the film by this point, my interest was piqued at the concept that he too was being assaulted alongside the women (because of his black eye and the fact he was wearing perfume) and that maybe kravitz was making commentary on what happens to men who speak out against their friends or refuse to be complicit in rape culture. but then it's revealed he just put on the perfume?? and there was zero deeper meaning?? i know it's a nitpick but what an unsatisfying explanation. it's such a weird/poor commentary on bystanderism. to me this highlighted how lazily kravitz and her co-writer went about developing the story, something i cannot get behind especially when the film touts itself as being so clever when handling a topic as sensitive as rape.

As much as I appreciate this being (and spoilers for anyone still curious about the movie's twists)
a rape/revenge movie created by a woman that isn't focused on weirdly sexualizing the act of assault, I just didn't get into the plot. Like, I honestly didn't expect the twist of the main character actually already having been to the island but most of the actors and the attempts of suspense fell flat for me. I was bored mostly and confused at times (reminds me of the muddled mess of Don't Worry Darling but without the interesting visuals).
I actually recommend people who might still want to watch a similar movie watch Revenge. More concise, better acting, cool cinematography, way more suspenseful, and with respect to the subject material.
I wanted to add while I don't hate the trigger warning, it also seemed unnecessary. From the trailers alone I fully expected these women would either be assaulted or there would be an attempt. For me the mystery was more about the how and why of what's going on and how they're going to escape.

The concept is good, but trying to convince us that this woman with the giant gap in her teeth is attractive with the close up camera shots totally takes us out of the movie. I just don’t know why these studios are willing to give up money to ensure DEI. Aren’t we supposed to be attracted to the main actress?

I just think the entire plot was written to be super cliché and unrealistic. Also not sure if she's a very good actress, but I'm not a fan of personally attacking how people look

One of the worst movies I have seen this year. There were only 4 people in my theater and two walked out during the movie. The first 45 minutes were so slow I nearly fell asleep. The first rule of any real life situation, never give up your phone to a stranger or anyone else. I felt out of place, disconnected from the story/script. A quick example, a big part of the movie is the ra** scenes. imho, those scenes were too sanitized to have any horrific affect on me since by then I knew what had occurred. Now imagine if those scenes showed yhe brutality in detail with the women being stripped, tied up, handcuffed with partial nudity, etc. I think that would have hit the male audience harder. Finally, the women committed murder. In my morality and religion, that is worse than ra**.

There's so many negative comments on this review it made me ponder this movie a bit and I truly couldn't even tell you what they should have done to make this good. This entire movie feels so far from even a decent movie they'd have needed to change up just about everything - different actors, a new script, remove the warning, etc. I could keep going lol

Sean...I agree with everything you said. The lead actress was basically an unattractive, gap-toothed, chubby diversity hire.
And a movie like this could have worked. For example, watch...
Ready or Not with Samara Weaving
    Mayhem...with Samara Weaving
    The Babysitter.....with Samara Weaving
    Samara Weaving!
Samara Weaving is cute, fun to watch, charismatic, and funny. That is what this movie needed. Instead, they hired an unattractive plank of wood.
And some great actors like Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, and Kyle MacLachlan have absolutely NOTHING TO DO IN THE MOVIE! They are just there!
The tone is all over the place...the first half is quirky and played for laughs...and than a brutal gang rape scene....um, WHAT?
This movie had some good ideas but the script, lead actress, and direction ruined it. AND WHY IS EVERY PERSON SHOT IN EXTREME CLOSE-UP?? I could count the pores in Channing Tatum's face.
Zoe Kravitz is one of the worse cases of nepotism I have seen in a long time.

I absolutely agree with a lot of this, besides attacking the leads looks. I'm not a fan of making fun of how people look, even if their performance is bad or you think they should have been cast differently. I just don't think in this movie in particular and how her character was written that she was either well acted or believable - I see no universe where a billionaire is interested in a nobody, weirdo cocktail waitress. I don't know if Samara could have saved this script, it was done so poorly it would have taken divine intervention to turn this movie around
