You said something that is so important and I’m so thankful that y’all touched on this sometimes women can’t escape their abusers so they have to act normal and that is the hardest thing to do in the most strength that you could exude
I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but I loved the parallels between this story and Greek myth. In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew meet the lotus eaters and are tempted to stay on the island, forgetting about trying to go home. It is a warning about the dangers of avoiding reality. In this case, the reality of the trauma they were experiencing.
Excellent point! I am personally not extremely familiar with greek mythology and that's why I personally didn't bring it up. The only parallel I saw was with how they were dressed which I figured was more of a weird frat thing but again due to my lack of knowledge. -C
Whew a couple of times I had to pause this movie and yell wtf is this??? Then it hit me this crap really be happening and she only scratched the surface of what really goes on but it was wiiiild
I absolutely love your review ladies excellent I don't know if anyone brought this up but the interaction with the two best friends Jess had gotten bit by the snake at that point i believe that's what brought her out of it and her friend was still messed up that's why she couldn't be there for Jess and understand fully what was going on
I was interesting the dynamic of the women all the women were very outspoken, almost alpha females even Naomi, like even though she was quiet and she was very captivating. She was unique she stood out almost like these men were targeting dominating alpha women to subdue them.
Such a great point! Which could be part of the messaging. ANY woman can fall prey to men like this. I mean Sarah was literally on a survivor like show and had self defense skills. -C
I have no clue why this video was recommended to me, but I loved your review! As much as I wanted to support Zoe Kravits, I wasn't interested in this movie, but now your review makes me want to watch it. I'll wait until Saturday morning and watch with all the lights on. 😁
someone brought up that the young guy most likely was getting SA'd too because he was being chased like the girls, and he also went on that fishing trip and came back with a black eye...so he may have been assaulted when he wasn't going along with their plans...i'm very curious about that upon rewatch because i have a feeling we'll be able to tell who exactly was doing that (maybe all of them)
He had the black eye prior to going fishing, as for "getting chased' to me, it looked more like he was being kept from helping the women, which is how he got the black eye rather than because he was being SA'd and I saw the movie twice and neither time did I see anything or heard anything said that implied to me that he was also being SA'd. Also, I would think if he was, Zoe K would have had a revenge/revelation moment for him as well vs what happened instead. -C
@@damonbullock2386 I personally believed he was given the perfume because he clearly was upset about what was happening to the women and they knew he would be an issue and so he was given the perfume. I believe they were trying to bring him into the fold because he said that he aspired to be like Slater and it just didn't work out the way the other guys planned. @@randomramblings9564 this is exactly what I picked up as well, I’m seeing a lot of people believe he was but if he was then that whole monologue changing Tatum had with him at the end wouldn’t make much sense from a plot standpoint for one and for the message I think Zoe was trying to get across with this film. There’s the blatant abusers but those who sit idly by and “do nothing” whilst it’s taking place whether out of fear of isolation or just shock are also complicit with the abuse
What I found interesting about Lucas was him asking Slate what he did instead of asking what was done to him. Like it was more natural for him to see himself as a possible abuser rather than a victim. And then he says “why would we go to hell we’re such nice guys” even after realizing what the guys have been up to

I am so glad to find your channel. I am late to the party. Great analysis. I have a thought on your question - how long had the 2 been friends. The Christian Slater character asked Jess at the cocktail party, "Have we met before"? Jess said no. Was he testing her like Slater King did with Frida? Jess became aware that something was really off when Cody could not find his knife. It is a trope that the best friend in a thriller gets killed due to knowing too much. That is the only thing I guessed. This was an excellent movie..
i just watched this. such a good movie. the horror of not knowing how long it has been going on. tbh wasn't a fan of the very end but admired that kravitz went with such a big swing.
For me, the implicit SA is worse than explicit because I can imagine horrible, horrible things being done to the girls. While I'm glad they didn't, it only added to the terror for me. I was curious when I saw that *the movie* had a trigger warning (because this is the first time I had seen a warning like that attached to a movie), so I should have known it was going to be a big, bad plot. From the moment the reveal happened, I had my hands over my mouth, horrified at the implications.

I think if Frida has been able to be conscious, you know not under the spell of the perfume if she could’ve possibly been a better friend to us because after having that conversation and basically saying to Jess, you know I feel seen here. I am having a good time are you having a good time? And putting her concerns aside I think the more free to thought about it, the more she would see that those concerns were really valid. But since she was under the spell of the forgetting flower that never came to light.
Great question! It's definitely possible, we just assumed it was a parent since his sister also experienced the abuse. I do think that perhaps the idea of creating something to make people forget their trauma was an idea Slater got from the therapist.
i'd guess that jess and frida have known each other for a few months...or maybe they've just been roommates a few months? coz they are close, like she shits with her friend there, but jess says frida is obsessed with him like frida always tells her about it. that's how i took it. before the reveal i just assumed he remembered her from seeing her the previous year and wanted to bring her to the island

BINGO. Based on the trailer I knew there was going to be some kind of power imbalance or a little SA but I did NOT expect the plot to revolve around a scheme to SA women so I appreciated the warning. I hope that regardless of that controversy with BL's movie though, they were planing to release with a trigger warning regardless.
I watched half of the trailer and felt some type of way because, I too thought it was just another romance film. I have not watched the movie yet but I am now prepared...

Yes we think he was abused as a child. Is Stacy Slater's Sister? We thought he was just an assistant. And The Assistant was drugged but it was by choice. Remember when Stacy finds out what Frida did and attacked her because she didn't want to remember the things Slater was doing. In that regard, she's definitely not a victim, she was ingesting the drug knowingly.

How are all you guys missing this? The only reason he didnt remember is because when they were giving out the snake venom, he was on the fishing trip with the men.
I think the movie was so dumb that it actually wanted to portray that, the abuse of other men, but decided not to. Theu change in the end. The movie itself didn't shed much light to it, and it referred to his participation (or lack of) as useless, he didn't help, like he could be an ally, but he just stood by. So, in my view, that's the movie's fault.

Here's my take on Lucas. Im conflicted. There was a scene where Lucas shouts “But we’re such nice guys!” Im not sure if he’s supposed to be a bystander & they are using the “nice guy” trope or if they intended for him to be a victim given the black eye and him actually running from Vic in Sarah's flashback. Why was that piece of dialogue at the end with Lucas included? What are the directors trying to demonstrate? It wasn’t fleshed out too well which is why there is much confusion over this.
