Jeep Rubicon and Toyota FJ Cruiser Off-Road in Hawaii

- We witnessed first hand the capabilities of both vehicles on the trails. I'm personally a Toyota guy, having owned several Toyota 4x4s, an FJ and now a Tacoma. They aren't evenly matched because the Jeeps articulation and flexibility with the solid front axle, shorter wheel base and being lighter weight. Driver experience, error and patience were also contributing factors in how each vehicle performed.
We didn't create this video to make one seam better than the other. Ohana Trails is a Jeep Club here that we were filming and by chance, a group of FJ Cruiser owners were convoying with them. Unfortunately, we had more video of the Jeeps over the FJ's.
All in all it was an epic day up in the mountains at Peacock Flats on Oahu looking over the North Pacific.

those trucks are like the subaru impreza STI and the mitsubishi EVOLUTION, theres a lot of hate from the owners because they are probably sold for their brand but those trucks are really comparable. Yes i know one is solid axle and the other IFS, but for my opinion its the best Independant front suspension for offroading, yah you don't drive it the same manner as an SAS and a lot of factors like experience can affect the performance. I owned a 84 4runner SAS and now i got a recent IFS 4runner that as the exactly same suspension as the FJs and i love it as i loved my SAS yota. But what a Nice relationship. I am a toyota guy but how i can hate jeeps, we are always having fun with jeep guys.
All i have to say is 20 years from now, my Fj will still work, THE SAME, while jeeps will have had millions of issues with them. Compare what really matters people, we dont drive in crazy tundra all the time, therefore, the road is what matters, thank you toyota for making an all-around great car
well if u feel like spending the money, u can mod an Fj to do that.
toyota is going to have millions of recalls in next 20 years. 6.4million recalled on april 10 2014.
TAIMOOR T
I didnt know you were a god and could determine the future? 6.4 million hmmm...and tell me, how many jeeps are still on the road since 1980's...then tell me how many toyota's are...
but then on the other hand they also have 1976 to 1982 landcruisers and FJ 'S in mint condition and diesel
Thomas Wallace Toyota all the way
By far one of the best FJ and Jeep videos on the internet. Nicely done!!
I've watched this video so many times and it still gets me pumped up every single time. Im100% a jeep guy. I've owned two CJ7's, a TJ, I'm on Cherokee number 4 and i also have a YJ and not one of them has ever given me any problems.
Stoked thanks for sharing Chris!
Bro, I’m on the same exact count, and every single one of my jeeps has performed flawlessly as well
am i the only one who digs the music? its perfect
Me too man me too haha.... 👍👍👍👍
Toyota always made great jeeps
That's like saying Chevy always made great Fords. 😂
Mike Hawk Yes the FJ cruiser was based off of the Toyota FJ 40's , Jeeps (short for general purpose) were not allways made by Chrysler. actually the first Jeep ever made was a Ford.
The J in FJ stands for Jeep.
no first jeep ever made was bantum
Us govt needed vehicle during Korean War. (Toyota) Therefore it was licensed to built jeeps for war 51-53. Something that would operate in mountainous terrain and supply line close to war.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video. Uploaded over 3 years ago but still one of my favorite videos on TH-cam.
I know there is a rivalry between Jeep owners and FJ owners but after watching this clip I'm convinced they are equally capable vehicles that can take you anywhere you want to go. Amazing machines!
JK all the way, Jeep been kicking ass since 1941 ;D
Everyone is talking like they know their vehicles... well look up the suzuki samurai, the BEST offroader
you are the only person i have ever seen that is not biased props to you :)
very good video with some interesting views on the wheeling. excellent offcamber shots....
thanks!
I don't understand people comparing a JK to an FJ... They are apples and oranges. Stock from the factory any FJ cant touch the Rubicon. The Rubicons are made for off-road, Dana 44s solid axles front and rear with electric lockers. In the US, Jeep makes the most capable off-road vehicle period, really is no debate. Now worldwide, Toyota vs Jeep is a whole different story.
Funny. 08 jeeps had mini van engines. Just a fact.
doug waugh I don't understand your point... they still walked up obstacles better then anything else from the factory.
O and if you do your research you will also find out that they are not true dana 44 axles they are in fact half 33 and half 44. Only as strong as the weakest part. And I am sure you know. The fj has a locker too. With atrac and crawl control it will go anywhere the mini van powered jeep can go, and in more comfort. I come from a family that has both jeep and fj, going all the way back to fj 40 and willies.
doug waugh What is a Dana 33? I know of Dana 30s and 35s... And your wrong, they are true 44s look it up. I also don't understand why your even comparing them, the JK has a front solid axle, FJ doesn't. The Rubi has a locker up front, FJ doesn't, a rear locker will only get you so far. Not to mention the IFS up front has zero flex. Now throw a solid axle and locker in front of the FJ then there will be a discussion. I like Toyotas' but throw the capable driver in both vehicles and it wouldn't even be a comparison.
Sory bro. Typo and I work for a jeep dealership. Lol! Why dont you look for yourself. Dana 30 tubes dana 30 knuckles, dana 30 axles. O wait it does have a dana 44 ring and pinion. So I guess that makes them dana 44s. Cant fix stupid now the j8 variant for the stupid people in this world that is the military version. It has a true dana 44.
Nice.!!! Thanks!!!!
I just recommended your video to a friend that is looking for a Rubicon. He already have Tundra 4x4.
I agree, TJ owner here, those JK's are really set up well. Good job by both makes, looked like a blast.
Two thubs up! Such display of power and skill combined isnt found so easy!
this is my favorite offroad video ever i love seeing these vehicles put to use
that looked like a lot of fun. jeep + yota owners cruisin' together for fun = a good time
great video, two incredible off road platforms with great history. Hawaii looks like an incredible place to go wheelin.
great spot, great jeeps/fj's, great friends great day... that looks like a good time
BRAVO and HELL YES. Thanks for taking me along!
I never get tired of watching this video, way too good commend from Venezuela my greetings
Easily one of my favorite TH-cam videos of all time.
Great vid! nice to see some folks working these trucks the right way! Love the jeeps and the cruisers.
Looks like fun. Nice Jeeps. Im a jeep guy but those FJs are sick looking. Thanks for the vid.
i was given a jeep wrangler unlimited from my grandfather just before he passed away and its one of the best offroaders that i know of.besides our two FJ40's.i have passed fj cruisers and landrovers in both of them and left them in my dust.
Looks fun, thanks for keeping it about four-wheeling and not about who is better!
Great video! Great filming and I love your sound track. The scenery was beautiful. I wish I could have been there.
I never would have imagined that they had trails in Hawaii and then I went last year to visit my wife's uncle and two doors down the guy had an early 90's yota with a sas. I would love to get my truck over there and hit a couple of trails. Sweet video.
Looks like you had lots of fun! Keep making videos, man!
Awesome trails. great video!
well done freedom riding, and what a great place for offroading!
Awesome vid, sick trails, good music. I like Rubi's and FJ's both equally but it sure looks nice to be able to wheel with the doors off ;) I need to get out to Hawaii to hit up some trails...
Bruddahz,
Good job on da vid. Professional without too much polish. Ono!
Look like some good times on da ridge!
Awesome vid, I am a jeep owner myself, cool to see the differences between the different vehicle types...
Finally someone on youtube with a little respect!
I've driven my JK with 4" of lift and 35's 750 plus miles in one trip, with the wife and kids, no problems. Then at our destination went through some crazy snow and rocks and drove back....I love my JK!
sick trail! looks like a blast!
very cool video, love the action shots
Nice video. Some sick Jeeps on there. I wish I knew about these trails when I was there, I would have taken my rental Wrangler up!
Great video - Jeep or FJ... Everyone looked to be having a blast!!!
Awesome video
Dude that is an awesome vid, nice work.
Great video!
sweeeet video. looks like most of these have lockers, that first siver fj maybe didnt. and that red jeep that gassed it up over the little hill, that was awesome
Finally a good vid showing both! Personally I love the sound of a Toyota V6
Great video! Has two of my favorite off-road vehicles. Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser. I enjoy watching this video, and Hawaii is the best to off-road in! No complaints on the music from me, I think this song is great!
@FreedomRiding
I can't wait to see Maui in September, it will be my first time in Hawaii. The wife has been twice though. Super pumped, now I wish I could bring my FJ.
Cool video . Love those FJs!!!
i have an old jeep and a new fj. really love them both!
Well done !!! I enjoyed the music and video !! Thanks !! I also have a 2009 Brickstone FJ and used to own 2005 Jeep wrangler Golden eagle !! I prefer the FJ in so many ways !
awesome video
good thing those jeeps were there, when those fjs got stuck they were gonna need to be pulled out by a jeep ;) amazing vid btw, really captures the essence of offroading
Amazing video, it has to be the best Jeep video I have seen. Thanks, aloha! Be there in May.
Good video! Looks like fun.
Very nice video...super angles..good editing..
awesome video gotta love jeepin
This is a pretty sweet video!
Mahalo nui loa for da video brah... Can't wait to go back an be with my ohana eh.
dude...awesome video...best on youtube!!
A very good video showing the difference between jeep lockers and toyota limited slip traction system.
Good video ! Good 4x4 !
Nice videos!! i like the man winch line!!
Being the owner of both a TJ and an FJ can tell you the biggest issue with the FJ is the turning ratio and wheel well clearance for bigger tires. The Jeep is more fun to drive offroad since it makes you feel closer to the environment but I'll pick the Fj for the peace of mind of getting home everytime. I miss my FJ40 dearly.
Right on Bradah Hilo boy living in El Paso TX own a jeep wrangler keep up the vids like seeing the island views and ocean. Plus miss the ohno food.
I'm a Jeep guy who offroads a lot. And I'll tell ya the Toyota does pretty dang good for being IFS front end. I like wheeling with them, a mix of rigs makes it more interesting.
i'm an fj fan myself, but i gotta say... with an fj or jeep, this would be a rockin fun day!
@FreedomRiding i give this video 5 stars
Dos grandes rivales, cada uno demostrando sus destrezas
such a magical place
Nice video guys...
The second half was really good.
Dude, loving the fish eye!
This looks just like this thing my hubby and I did in Vegas! It was a this company called VORE. Really fun! Kinda scary too but I'll never forget it! Got a really great deal too from this travel site called Galavantier
Really nice video man
Such an awesome lineup of vehicles 00:40
I don't care what you say, the articulation on those jeeps is straight sexy. The FJ is a little more domesticated, with a full roof and all, but I've driven both and they're excellent vehicles.
Yes!!! I've seen the legendary proper spelling of they're on the internet. Thank you sir for not using their or there.
Osvaldo Salgado I regularly make fun of others for making that mistake, of course I can't get caught making one myself!
i like this video!!
I LOVE BOTH
looks like a dam good time! lookin into gettin a '95 wrangler myself!
Have a 98 xj. It can't be stopped. Quadratrac II 4X4 system can't be beat
Agreed, I've got a GMC Sierra crew cab and it gets around just fine. I have to watch out for high centering but haven't had any problems yet and it's not even lifted at the moment.
Video nicely put together - fj guy
Excellent video. Thinking of getting a Rubicon, but have not decided between the 2 or 4 doors.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like it's easier to see out of the Jeep.
Anyway, love both. Fantastic vehicles. Like big toys, which is awesome.
Nice vid.!!
Rubicon is definitely the most capable stock off-road vehicle you can get. Once you start tricking them out they're pretty comparable though. It comes down to equipment, and more often than not driver error. They're both pretty kick-ass trucks though. I have an Fj, but love the Wrangler too.
Beautiful living thinngs!
i like the Song
good video Uploader
The FJ fared better than I would have thought an urban assault vehicle would…I like the FJ quirk style for town I bet it great!
looks like good times!
looks like fun!
nice vid, nice music
That was awesome! Still can't decide if I'll buy the Jeep or the FJ o_O
very cool!
I've owned many Jeeps over many years. I bought the FJ TRD SE when it came out. I loved my Jeeps but the big issue that tips an otherwise balance between Jeep and FJ is that The FJ needs only regular maintenance and I had to work on my Jeeps all the time. But if I had more money gladly have them both. I just love off road driving. Got to get over to Hawaii too. You all got it goin on! America! Fuck Yeah!
Awesome 4wd Video. Go the Jeep
Damn, those are some nice jeeps.
Ima fan of both yotas and jeeps. 2 of my best friends dive tocomas and i drive a jeep. We all beat the hell out of our rigs together and we all fix em together. They are both great companies and it really just depends on what you want to do with your vehicle when it comes to choosing one over the other.
nice video
