The accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen has become a problem of internal politics in the Netherlands. Elections will be held in the Netherlands next year. Prime Minister Rutte's party (VVD) wants to win these elections, and Mr. Rutte wants to avoid the controversy directed against VVD according to which the party supported the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen. Politics is dirty, including in the Netherlands, but it is not allowed to bring your internal political dirt to the level of the decisions of the European Union institutions.

London is hundreds of times more scary. For 29 years i have never experienced any violence against me or seen any real crime. Yes, the taxi drivers can overcharge you or you can be pick pocketed by certain people, however most of those people are of specific ethnic origin (not being racist, just stating single facts based on statistical data) The only time my phone and wallet got stolen was by Danish passport holder. I am studying in Germany and everyone is super friendly until they ask me where am i coming from? Once they hear Bulgaria their face is changing. Discrimination against Eastern Europeans is fierce. The ignorance is mind blowing. How is it that all foreigners who visit Bulgaria fall in love with it? And all Bulgarians working or studying abroad are met with distrust and ignorance? Of course, there is corruption but corruption can be found in any EU country. I wouldn't want to stay in a Union which think of us as a second quality.
@@joantrendafilov7963 Crime rates are highly unreliable but with everything else I agree, since with stuff like homicide rates which are quite a lot more trustworthy since there is no way a homicide doesn’t go unreported we can see that both the UK and Romania have a ~1.2 per 100000 homicide rate, making them two just as safe in this case
And that's how eurosceptics are born. Like it wasn't enough that Poland and Hungary were targeted, now other Eastern European countries like Romania and Bulgaria are targeted for non-alignment issues. Kinda makes me think, these countries had such a tough history, being at the cornerstone of great empires and dealing with battles and invasions, sometimes saving Western powers, but yet, they are treated like 2nd world citizens. Western Europe is actually thriving because of the admission in the EU of these countries, expanding their influence through common market, but also due to the cheaper work force represented by these people. On thursday, in Amsterdam, a guy was shot in the broad daylight 5 meters away from me. Rotterdam is filled with coke from South America. If you go on the deep web, every drug that is an amphetamine, cannabis or cocaine, comes from NL. Heck you can even order drugs at your doorstep in less than 30 minutes. Never in my 20 years of living in Bucharest, I ve seen something like that. The Dutch Gov is corrupt like any other government, but what sets the Romanian gov and the Bulgarian one, is that we recognise what we are and what we do. Because of the corporate lobbying (TOTALLY NOT CORRUPTION, IT S JUST LOBBY BRO) in Rotterdam, there will a big uprise in right wing movements in Romania and Bulgaria. You can see that even from now with parties like AUR(in Romania), which appeal with some subversive fascist ideologies to the country side folk that struggles to live day by day. When people in the west will realise that this will be an actual problem it wil already be too late. Then if the problem gets to be too big the west will act again as a true saviour and then these countries will be indebted to the west after they get lets say saved and thus, the cycle continuues. Why should we continue to do business with partners who are against our development? When Eastern Europeans come to your countries to do cheap and dirty labour all is good, but when it comes to actually treating them equally and helping them develop, suddenly people no longer want that. As Romanian or Bulgarian this is perfect example on how to become Eurosceptic...:)) It is unbelievable how democracy is avoided with this VETO process. EU does not realize once again that such behaviors in many domains will only FAIL in building constructive relations of this organization.
By giving every country veto rights, none of those countries give up autonomy. If a simple majority were needed, countries (in this case the Netherlands) could be forced to accept something they don’t want to. Apparently they agreed to have all countries within the shengen area keep their autonomy, and since all countries agreed to that it is perfectly democratic, even their right, to use their veto right to prevent something they don’t like. I am not arguing if it’s the right choice, but it is their right
Funny how British euro sceptics constantly claim that the EU imposes things against the expressed will of the individual member states. You on the other hand, say that the autonomy and individual veto power of each member state is undemocratic... The EU is a convenient punching bag for many: dammed if you do, dammed if you don't...

None of the Greek or Bulgarian ports have this advantage. Thus much cheaper prices than lorry transport.
I don't think that's going to be a big problem. If that lower prices it'll make Europe more competitive, and that in turn will increase trade and lead to those channels being overloaded. How hypocritical, that when N.Macedonia was concerned, everyone was pushing Bulgaria to "just accept" N.Macedonia in at the line to join the EU, but when Bulgaria is concerned, no one is pushing the Netherlands to accept the two Balkan countries into Schengen. Hypocrisy at its finest. Anyway, with every passing day, these countries along with a few other ones, are being pushing back into Russia's sphere of influence and indeed the Russian influence is increasing dramatically. Soon, interesting times are ahead of us.
Clearly you underestimate just how much we here in Romania *hate* Russia. A dozen invasions in less than 200 years tend to have this effect. Even without NATO and EU, they'd still have to take us Ukraine-style. Our disdain trumps their influence without a doubt.
I visited both - Bulgaria and N.Macedonia. Despite how proud Bulgarians are, N.Macedonia is much more organised country. Macedonians are hard working people and they care how their surroundings look like - towns are very clean and good looking. At the same time Bulgarians are lazy, their yards look neglected, and they only are looking for new donations from EU instead of making some effort. The funniest part is that Bulgarians think, they are better in everything comparing to Macedonians.
This how otherwise good decisions have been either stalled or rejected by one or two countries at most in the whole EU. It's mind boggling how one single country can reject admission into the Schengen area because it stands to lose money in the process (yes, that's the real reason why Netherlands won't allow Romania and Bulgaria in!)

I agree. It should be something like: "if 60% are in favor, it passes". If it has to be unanimous then nothing will ever be achieved. @@kevinboros7427 I would approach it so emotional and most certainly not cut with the European Union for that. The rules are there and I am confident they will be respected and achieved. The veto right is something I personally do not so like so much.
This just demonstrates that EU is not as united as everyone says, there are still countries who sees their own interest first and unfortunately, this affects EU as a whole and other countries as well and it's a real shame because this division will only make everything worse for us. Here in Romania, pretty much all politicians are revolted against the idea that Netherlands would refuse us again, and many politicians already warned that Romania position in EU could change.
Dutch guy here. Many people here absolutely do not want to have romania in. a lot of organized crime especially the fake beggars that get picked up by their bosses at the end of the day. @@TheWappa This is the most pathetic excuse to not accept a new member because of some beggars :)))) omg. How do you know we have a lot of organized crime?... @@TheWappa That means dutch people are extremely uniformed and all they listen to is their own propaganda which doesn't really surprise me, all the things you talked about have nothing to do with Schengen and as a fact, Romania is far from being known for organized crimes lol, for being poor? i guess yeah, we are known for that since we can't compare with a country like Netherlands with a rich history of colonization and western influence. Most of things you affirmed are a bunch of non-sense coming from a guy who's country is literally called a narco-state where biggest illegal business with drugs are happening there, so don't talk about Romania being corrupted because the level of corruption from western countries is huge but that isn't noticeable on eye since they aren't poor countries.
@@TheWappa yes, I did notice a strong antipathy towards Romania... from the part of SOME people from Netherlands (well, most of those I spoke to and who do not know the country well; it's different from how my Dutch friends see it). I also noticed stereotypes towards Romania. And... how should I call it? ... an outdated perception about Romania. Even when they were given reports from international organizations over certain aspects they blamed Romania with (for example: its supposed severe discrimination towards other ethnicities), they stubbornly preferred to keep their outdated view on the matter. To keep going with the same example: even if I, as a part of ethnic minorities here, tell them we suffer absolutely no oppression here nowadays. They unwisely and stubbornly prefer to tell me I am oppressed (they are stuck to how Romania was 30 years ago, when we did face discrimination). It was... mind blowing to see how immaturely they reacted when faced with a reality that didn't fit their own image and unreal ideas of it. I felt it might be a strong nationalistic message going around in Netherlands from the Dutch politicians... a message that instigates the citizens of Netherlands against people from Romania (and other ethnicities as well). Otherwise... how could they be so incredibly stubborn when they faced objective reports about the reality of this country? There is a reason why the Dutch friends (who often come here) appreciate this country. They got to know, over the years, its reality. And they witnessed, with the passing of time, the huuuuuge progress this country made. Unfortunately, an unfavorable decision of the Netherlands regarding Romania and Schengen risks pushing this country in the arms of Russian influence (who like to be officially treated as second hand EU citizen?). Why? Because through this type of attitude they confirm and strengthen the claim of some nationalistic and pro-Russian political parties (who, right now, are still not well seen by a majority of Romanians). Such an attitude, choosing to not accept Romania in Schengen, will strengthen the message, the claims of these dangerous anti-EU, anti-NATO and pro-Russian political parties. I see Netherlands as a country (not all of its people) could care less about the bleak future the people of Romania might face if that happens. But can't they see how, on the long term, this might have repercussions on the security of the continent (Romania is a pillar of security in the region)? And, indirectly, on its economy?
This December we will all get to see if the European Union is indeed a union. If Romania and Bulgaria are again veto-ed out of the Schengen Area, I'm afraid the skeptics are right. I have a suspicion that Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen Area in 2023, due to the new economic and military context, which is the war between Ukraine and Russia. If this does not happen, the EU will begin to dissolve slowly but steadily.

That means that the people coming from those countries can simply just get benefits for not working, that is by Dutch law. So that means that the benefits are HIGHER for not working, than the salaries they would receive by working in their respective countries. Alot of Dutch people are against that, because they will get housing before Dutch people and therefore don't like that their children or themselves won't get housing before those people moving to the Netherlands. No problem, Romania can vote against any dutch initiatives at EU level, especially in situations where unanimity is required (or where it can veto) and this can cost a lot more the Netherlands. This Romania has met all criteria years ago but it kept on being blackmailed/extorted by the exact same countries that should have shown solidarity to a fellow member of the same union. It's a matter of 2 things - No.1 Netherlands always wanted the big port at the Black Sea (Constanta) close to which a few years ago there has been made a big capture of drugs that seemed to have been destined to Amsterdam and no.2 Gay marriage which is hard to be accepted by the culture of a country that has a population with 85% declared christians. It's the same under the table politics and hypocrisy that distroyed real EU unity for many years now and the reason why EU doesn't rise at the same level with top powers of the world(US, Russia, China). The 2 gears Europe exists way before it was discussed in public and this is just one of its signs.
There is no real veto. A veto in the EU is the result of some specific topics requiring unanimity amungst the European Council. Neither the commission, nor parliament vote based on their nationality (or at least, thats the idea).
I studied in Romania 5 years, and I can say, they are far not so homophobic how you are saying, and far not so religious. they even had a homophobic refferendum at that time I was student there, and it failed. I came from real homophobic place, trust me, in my country we even don't have gayclubs even in capital city, not saying about smaller cities. And romania is far from that level of homophonia which has Schengen area member, Hungary. and also in terms of corruptions:)

Since you are criticising France for being unsafe, do bear in mind that every time that there is a house burglary in the French countryside, metal equipment being stolen, tools, etc it's because of "Romanians" for ordinary people. Of course the loot is immediately shipped to Romania, and sold off there under the radar. Romania is getting money from the EU to boost the integration of its Roma minority, what does it do with it? What about the women and children forced to beg by criminal family gangs in the streets of Paris? Why isn't Romania cracking down on its family gangs, who build themselves opulent houses in your country ?
Thank you for your concise, informative, timely, and fun video! I'm a US citizen, born and raised, but I follow events in the EU very closely, and I am rooting for Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria - ALL THREE - to be admitted to Schengen today! Failure to do so makes the EU look weak & inconsistent to outsiders. I think it's quite hypocritical of the Netherlands and Austria, frankly, to deny Romania and Bulgaria admission to Schengen, due to the existence of organized crime, corruption, and irregular migration. ALL countries have those problems at some level - even the Netherlands and Austria. So a few politicians in Austria & the Netherlands are grandstanding here for cheap, short-term political points, and it's not fair to the citizens of Romania and Bulgaria who have already paid the price for their nations to get ready for Schengen. I congratulate Croatia today, and may the long-suffering people of Romania and Bulgaria enjoy the benefits of Schengen as soon as possible.
@empty I'm so sorry you feel that way, although I do understand your sentiment. And I am sure you are not alone, I'm sure lots of your fellow citizens feel the same way. As I said in my comment, it's not fair and hypocritical for Romania and Bulgaria to be kept out of Schengen any longer.
Russia spends tons of money in Bulgaria for propaganda. And sadly it is working. Two Pro-Russian parties who openly propose leaving EU and NATO received about 15 % at the elections and entered the Parliament. They continue to gather support. I have been in countries like the Netherlands and France and I think that Bulgaria is a safer country in many aspects. You should think strategically and let us in.
We the Romanians were forced to pay 1B EUR in 2007 as per the EU adherence treaty to secure our Schengen borders. And when I say 'pay' you should read 'bribe' EU by paying the money to EADS, a EU corporation who just split the money where they had to and did nothing much in return. The following up lawsuit in Romania for corruption within EADS was forgotten in some drawer until prescription occurred and it was closed with no convictions. So basically they stole our money promising us Schengen instead, and after we paid they scammed us. To justify themselves, they started saying dumb things, like we are too corrupt or the level of organized crime is too high or whatever dumb things it crossed their minds but neither of these things were stipulated in the adherence treaty nor in our contracts. They just don't want to respect their part of the contract, even if we did our part and paid their price. The organized crime in Netherlands is higher than in Romania nowadays by all internationally accepted standards. The corruption the same. Netherlands rejects our adherence because Constanta will become the biggest EU port, taking the money from Rotterdam. However, goods imported through Constanta will be much cheaper for all EU. But they don't care about integration and collaboration at EU. They like our money with their banks in Romania and they only care about their money. So if that's how they want to play, and EU integration, collaboration and signed contracts are meaningless to them, we should just use our leverage over them and start thinking about our money: 1. We have enough gas for our internal consumption we should stop exporting it and stop paying 5% tax for solidarity with EU 2. We should start importing cheap energy from Russia 3. We should stop letting armament going to Ukraine through our borders 4. We should start voting against extension of EU and NATO unless we get paid like Netherlands expects to (these are only costs for us) 5. We should push Netherlands businesses out of our country. Unfortunately friendly collaboration are just empty words for EU right now and so are the signed and paid contracts. It would be only fair to follow our interests too.
Ahhh yes, romania and Bulgaria, the 2 places in europe were violent crime is virtually non existent and you don't get stabbed in the back or raped at night by middle eastern and African imigrants. 2 countries in eastern eu were right wing extremism isn't a thing now or in any forseeble future, compared to other borderline fascist countries in the eu, and are very pro west and try to help ua and others. Why on earth would Europeans show any kind of solidarity and let them in , or why would Europeans ever try to stop discriminating them across the continent by constantly associating them with roma people, which are also discriminated like how the Jews were in the past. Why stop all of this when it's so much fun fking with them. Alot of people live in such a small country, so young people can't even get a accommodation. Second Netherlands had really bad experiences with Eastern Europe countries joining the Schengen Area, because the Netherlands have really good benefits.

If this does not happen, the EU will begin to dissolve slowly but steadily.

its always so sad to see how anti European integration my lovely country is :( It tends to be to easy for politicians in this country to blame the EU for so many things because of the optics of being a massive net (financial) contributor while all the benefits are more arcane and harder to quantify, so politicians here either use it to blame the EU or are to afraid to defend the EU because the arguments are to hard to make. I have been getting more and more annoyed at the lack of backbone in defending Europe and European integration from my national politics and I am more and more considering just voting purely on the EU issue.
Its sad to see that this euro scepticism is so wide spread too, i dont know about the politics of all eu countries but i know ireland, denmark, france, poland, hungary, italy and your Netherlands all at least have a party that constantly uses the eu as a scapegoat for any economic issues while only germany and spain more or less agree that the eu is a force for good

Like we did when the Polish joined the EU or the Spanish or the Greeks or the Baltic nations? The Netherlands is full.
Just to give you an example of how ''full'' the Netherlands is. If a dutch citizen wants to get a social wellfare house in the Netherlands he needs to wait 25 years to get one in certain counties. 12 years is the average. And this average keeps growing and growing because there are ''priority'' cases of eastern Europeans (and also migrants from outside the EU) who come here and receive ''priority'' housing in these houses.
Well sorry to say so, but as a dutch men I would like to live in an house in my own nation and also sorry to say so but I would like to know that my childern dont have to live across the border to be able to live affordable.

@@tim3440 Exactly this, people here won't understand this. I wrote below reply regarding this also:
" I am Dutch and the real reason is that The Netherlands rejects those countries because the housing market is very bad. Alot of people live in such a small country, so young people can't even get a accommodation. Second Netherlands had really bad experiences with Eastern Europe countries joining the Schengen Area, because the Netherlands have really good benefits.
You can find many articles regarding that.
TDLR: Many people of those countries will come to the Netherlands, not working but getting benefits and getting housing before locals. Same happened when Polish people moved to the Netherlands in the 90's and early 2000.

Here's a small tidbit of information:
- There's a major european port. Rotterdam. Guess where it's located.
- There coud be a second major european port: Constanta. Again, guess where it's located.
Ships taking the Suez canal route would dock in Constanta and have an easier acces to the central and eastern europe. If this route was easier to travel, Rotterdam port woudl lose a hucge chunk of businesss to the Constanta port.
This would not only affect Rotterdam, but also Antwerp, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Marseille, Bremerhaven and many other Western European ports.
Stop the damn conspiracy theory with Constanta port (romanian citizen here). Now, they started to invest some money (peanuts) since the war started in Ukraine because a high influx of cereals from Ukraine which needed distribution and came via Constanta port, which is NOT prepared to process a lot of traffic, not even 5% of Rotterdam. Pana se va raspunde la intrebare, apreciez ca pozitia Olandei e penibila si generatore de sentimente nonUE.
Olanda este o provincie din Netherlands
As A Bulgaria I would love to see Macedonia one day in the Schengen area so we can finally say we have united our nations :D

I'm Romanian and I work in wind industry as travel technician. I've traveled in most of Europe and what I can say from my experience is that I haven't felt safe walking at night in countries like France, Netherlands, Belgium. Romania may be not as great as any western country, but is much safer at night. We do have our bad famed cities and neighborhoods, not gonna lie...but wtf? Especially France...would never move there. Now I understand why they're cranky most of the time.
what... not safe at night in the Netherlands? What kind of place where u staying at lmao.
Not safe in the Netherlands? hihi haha
Yes the EU big cities are shit . BUT not the local people ! The many mafia a criminals from romania , serbia, bulgaria, etc. These fcking ppls are everywhere in the EU and we dont like the east balkanian shit troublemakers !!

Where can I see who voted against RO&BG
Russia spends tons of money in Bulgaria for propaganda. And sadly it is working. Two Pro-Russian parties who openly propose leaving EU and NATO received about 15 % at the elections and entered the Parliament. They continue to gather support. I have been in countries like the Netherlands and France and I think that Bulgaria is a safer country in many aspects. You should think strategically and let us in.
Perhaps we should wait the Netherlands to submerge...
So if that's how they want to play, and EU integration, collaboration and signed contracts are meaningless to them, we should just use our leverage over them and start thinking about our money:
1. We have enough gas for our internal consumption we should stop exporting it and stop paying 5% tax for solidarity with EU
2. We should start importing cheap energy from Russia
3. We should stop letting armament going to Ukraine through our borders
4. We should start voting against extension of EU and NATO unless we get paid like Netherlands expects to (these are only costs for us)
I mean theyr not france or Germany 2 countries with 2 big economies and militaries, theyr just 2 weak countries that can be housed around as the right wingers in western europe please
Germani nu prea are armata.
