      I don't get it, Kosovo won the revolution they won their independents so how do they get to decide if the ppl of that country want to be on their own or not, I thought they are democrats who give freedom to the ppl 😐
      I can't believe everyone is still like, oh Albanians should have just stayed slaves and not have any rights, i guess N0rth Kora should have the south, Ch!na should have Taiwan, and even H!tler, they are all right and ppl should have just stayed with them since they had the power.
      Yeah, I mean that makes sense, Russia also has the right to annex any part of Ukraine, it doesn't matter that in those parts 70% of the population says no.
      Ohh wait now Indians will say yes (since they seem to love Russia), well i guess the UK should get back all its colonization I mean by your standers is only right.
      OH even better, let's let Italy have all of us since is theirs, and form the long-lost Roman empire, will make Mussol!n! proud 🤣
      Japan should have half of Azia, while the other half belongs to Mongolia, and China.
      Arabia should have all of northern Africa and the middle east.
      Sapin needs south America.
      Sorry i can't write all of them, but it think you all get what i mean. So if democracy means power to the strong and the government, then what does power to the ppl mean?

      I don't know, I'm British and thought it was a crazy idea that the UK left the EU, I can't see us joining any time soon for a number of reasons.
      The main reason is the EU and it's members, it's highly likely that even if the UK wanted to join, the EU or one of its members would block us joining for at least 2 decades or more, after all, not much has changed in the UK and the UK has always been a troublesome member, if the EU was to let us back in, they are going to want to see some major shifts in how the political system sees the EU projects, as well as the media and public, all that takes a lot of time to change and for now, there is no real incentive for the EU to want us back after how the UK has behaved.
      With that said, the UK could join the single market and custom union, that would protect the economy and living standards but the UK wouldn't have a say in EU law making that the UK would have to abide by, maybe that's something the UK will just have to accept to get back on good terms with the EU and it's members.
      Truth be told, with everything that's going on in the UK with Scotland, Northern Ireland and even Wales talking more about independence, it's going to be hard to predict the next 10 years for the UK because unless this government gets its act together, I can see one or two of the UK members leaving the UK union over the next decade.
      Basically, as long as this Tory lot is in power, there is no hope in getting on good terms with the EU because they are going out of their way to pick a fight with the EU and then we have Labour that are too weak and scared to death to even mention Brexit that things don't bold well for the UK.
      The only silver lining in all this is the Tories themselves, if they keep going the way they are doing, keep protecting Boris and the hard line Brexiteers, they could implode by the next election, that could open up the door for closer ties between the EU and UK but I suspect that would only be the case if the Tories get humiliated at the elections which they might be heading in that direction and if the Tories are smart, they would get rid of Boris and the hardline Brexiteers in the party because they are dragging the party down and personally, I hope the Tories are dumb and stick with Boris so they can sink.

      @lashakatsanashvili ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@EUMadeSimple There has been a solution up for debate in the case of NATO membership, which could also be applied to EU membership. In particular, either NATO or EU membership could be granted with Article 5, and the status of a non-Schengen country encompassing only the territory under the de jure control of the Georgian government. For example, as a case scenario, West Germany and Cyprus could be mentioned, respectively. Of course, this is intended as a temporary solution to circumvent the Russian "de facto veto", and once the opportunity arises, the Russian-occupied territories could be incorporated too. Last but not least, as one would expect, the Russian state propaganda has been deeply invested in discrediting this solution since it's in the interest of Putin to keep the status quo - by trying to sell it as giving up on the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region. However, I see it as the only remedy for the Georgian state to get out of this vicious cycle and excel at political and economic reforms.

    The 37 country issue is easy to solve.
    Back when Romania and Bulgaria were in talks for accession, the EU was also working on the European Constitution. As such, one of the conditions for Romania and Bulgaria's accession was that they'd be defacto in favour of the Constitution.

    A smaller countries tend to move quickly if they have a political maturity and desire ( example Slovenia, Croatia)
    I totally agree with your projection on Montenegro !
    I also see lots of potential for a fast move for Moldova ( only because the country’s government is very ambitious and has all the tool for its advance)
    I personally project them to open the negotiations in someway by the end of 2023.
    Also to consider one thing Moldova and Ukraine has a very loud advocates in Brussels such as Romania who is pushing for Moldova based on it’s special historical relationship and Poland pushing hard for Ukraine. Although also both of them have a significant high support from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
    Regarding Moldovas territorial breakaway region it is present but it is not a religious or racial conflict, it is mostly based on corruption and mobs affairs.
    Once Moldova would be able to set in place its proposed judicial system gaps there is a good chance this conflict would be solved with no casualties.

    The way I see Turkey's membership is very complicated.
    Turkey is very diversed county and I mean very diversed. As a guy who has been living here for almost a decade it's very hard whether Turkey is secular country or just Islamic.
    Yet I think that you can't deny that Turkey is utterly secular in a lot of political, economic and cultural point of views. Yet people might confuse that people also whom I have lived with are undescribable in one total sense. You can see your neighbor downstairs being a typical Muslim and your neighbor upstairs being completely the type of guy that'd through an alcoholic party everyday. So I want to conclude this comment by saying; modernization in Turkey may not be stable and perfect, yet if you take closer look you'd find a country you can never define.. and to understand this you have to understand what is modernization and look at other examples.. because it seems that you can really suppress and change a whole country's history, culture, values, politics and economic by just "modernization".
    And I'm probably wrong but this is my opinion built on sociology studies in books and history in general..

    It's really hard to predict the future in this case. Because if this process would go as intendend, those states would never join because of lacking reforms and corruption and let's say differing views about democracy.
    Things that seem, like they will never change.
    But in the recent conflict with russia this might change. Because in my opinion the objective potentially will change, if it hasn't already, from "gaining political & economical partners" to secure important geographic landmarks, to gain a more favourable position in potential geopolitical conflicts, that might/will arise in the future.

      In the case of Moldova, Ukraine; prob Montenegro, Albania, N. Macedonia & Georgia - I'm pretty sure they have the *same opinion on what democracy should be.* 🤨 Why do you throw around easy soundbites, based on *old* negative stereotypes - from the 90's or something - without *actually* looking into the present-day situation?
      This last part made no sense at all. Just because they are not *performing* that well as a democracy *yet,* doesn't mean they have "differing opinions on what that should be" - or in other words, *aren't even trying & prefer autoritarianism.* 🤨 Extremely baseless & bigotted remark.

      @dyawr ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As for the reforms & corruption - they are currently *working* on them, person... 🙂 That's what the EU accession criteria (at least the bulk of it) is mainly about...
      Romania & Bulgaria got the CVM supervision program when they joined - *precisely* so they can deal with some of the judiciary & corruption issues further. And have made great progress since.
      Currently, Hungary ranks lower on the corruption index than Romania, for example (meaning worse) - and this wouldn't have happened if they received the CVM, I think. *Yet,* they are still a pretty successul & integrated member of the EU, in most areas. Being in the Schengen zone, OSCE & all.
      So, all these are things which can be resolved through time & EU assistance.

      To be honest it all depends on the economy. Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia will join before the end of the decade. If Romania, poland, Bulgaria keep getting wealthier and EU gdp output, salaries keep growing, countries like serbia or bonsia will have far more pressure from the population. The balkans are surrounded by EU borders. I think geography plays a very very impoetant role when analysing rhe far diatant future. Bosnia, serbia,kosovo, Moldova will join, maybe 2030's 2040's but if we project a succeaful EU they will join. In my opinion Ukraine, Georgia, turkey are the ones that i think would be harder to predictingin a distant future bc of russia. So about TURKIYE or TURKEY, I believe after elections in 2023 things of change could surprise everyone. But still question is more on How Turkey solves issues with neighbours and refugee crisis. 14 Chapters are open to finish and other chapters are closed needed to be open by agreement of other countries. If Turkey finishes all 35 Chapters, in theory there is no reason to block them to reach Stage 4. I believe Accession Document will be Approved by Turkish citizens and Parliment. However Question is will EU be ready to agree Turkey join when the time comes, when all things needed are agreed and done ?

      Yes, Turkey's membership completely hinges upon Erdogan's removal, and following that, restoring press freedom and undoing democratic backsliding. I think the EU would want to see measures that would also prevent another dictatorship from being in power, so as to prevent another Hungary situation. Finally, they also need to resolve their issues with Greece and Cyprus.

      I think there’s no clue in making Turkey a member state of the EU, beyond the political problems with (M)Erdogan Turkey has a totally different culture and history and it’s historically, politically and culturally more linked with the Middle East. They haven’t known European religious wars (between christians), the Age of Enlightenment, the Age of Revolution, the restoration, the industrial Revolution, the spread of socialist values etc. etc.

      @@calasalos Your criteria don't really make sense. Since when does having inter-Christian wars make one European? Same with Industrial Revolution? For the industrial revolution, many other eastern European countries also did not go through the industrial Revolution. Age of Enlightenment -- it was involved in that. Politically, I disagree. The Ottoman Empire has been mixed in with European politics for centuries. Culturally, yes they were more linked with the Middle East. Socialist values, etc are again not inherently European. You're thinking everything through a western European lens (including your "Age of Revolution").The continent is much bigger than that. While I agree that Turkey is quite more different than most European countries, your criteria are frankly very arbitrary, and you can take a number of Southern and Eastern European countries that also don't meet your random criteria.

      @@CouchTomato87 Inter christian wars and persecutions taught europeans the value of tolerance and freedom, starting with the "peace of Augsburg", in 1555 during the Reformation, stating the famous principle "cuis regio, eius religio" (trad: whose realm, his religion), or the "peace of Westphalia"in 1648 which ended the bloody "thirty years war" and re-stated almost one hundred years later the same principles. This had great consequences in shaping the continent: scientific research became more free and unrelated with religious dogmas or limits (was notorious in all European countries the infamous case of Galileo's trial), philosophers became more free and open to new theories gradually reaching to The Age of enlightenment with great philosophers as Kant, Rousseau, Voltaire, Hume, Locke who helped to criticize the old "ancient regime" and to extend the old aristocratic liberties to all human beings. This philosophical premise helped unleashing the French Revolution with his "Universal Declaration of human Rights" etc. etc. It was a long, contradictory, har-fought history which had, though, as its goal, the full realization of human dignity.

On the other hand, every time Ottomans tried to invade Europe European nations always gathered together in fighting back, as happened in Lepanto in 1571 or in the Battle of Vienna in 1529 and in 1683. Serbia is totally a pro-russian dictatorship and yet they started their negotations to join EU long time ago. Why? Russian factor! Eu is trying to remove the russian influence in these countries by giving them membership.
      On the other hand, Kosovo has been promised visa liberalization over 10 years ago and yet here we are, they just got another promise for 2024. Why? Because there is little to no influence by Russia in Kosovo, because it is a pro-western country who is fully commited to fulfill all requirements by the EU so that's why EU doesnt really hurry when it comes to Kosovo.

    I think realistically, before the EU can bring in new members, it's going to need to reform the EU, especially on vetoes and majority voting, otherwise, more members will make the system unworkable.
    I think with vetoes, either it needs to go or it needs to be based on a percentage of countries to block something, not where it is now where anyone member can hold the rest to ransom, it's easy to see how that can create grid lock as more members join.
    The second is majority voting, that could be done on population size and amount of members that vote a given way, it could even be done in a way where you need a percentage of the population and members to pass or veto a motion.
    I think treaty change needs to happen over the next 3 years and whiles that is going on, the countries wanting to join the EU, can do the reforms needed to join, after all, joining the EU is no quick process and how quick it happens usually depends on the reforms the country does.
    In the case of Ukraine, a few things need to happen, the above reforms of the EU, the war in Ukraine needs to come to an end and a lot of reforms, the reforms part is probably much easier to achieve now thanks to Putin because any government in Ukraine will use the threat of Russia to push reforms through, they will also make the ones holding out feel guilty into pushing the reforms through, in other words, it should be much easier for Ukraine to do the reforms needed to join the EU then it was before the war, still the war will need to come to an end before that can start.
    But let's not kid ourselves, it's no quick process, there is no such thing as fast tracking a country in like Ukraine wants, how quickly a country joins is really up to how quickly the country in question does the reforms needed to join, some countries are quite fast on that, others drag their feet.
    One thing is certain, thanks to Putin's aggression, more countries want to join the EU than they did before the war, the EU is also more open to expending eastwards, that in time is likely going to get other countries to want to join but like I said above, first the EU needs to reform its self before any country can join, Hungary and Poland are proof that change is needed, which is ironic because Poland and Hungary are the two countries that want the EU to let these other countries in and yet they are the biggest roadblock from letting it happen, especially with Hungary.
    Also, what is it with some countries that seem to think that if they complain a lot or try to guilt them into speeding up the process of letting them in? That doesn't work, the EU is a very rules based organization, if any country wants to join, it really is up to the country in question how quickly they can join, in other words, do the reforms needed and solve the other issues they have, especially boarder issues, it's not magic, it's just common sense and hence why some countries join much faster then others.

    • @dyawr
      @dyawr ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Ukraine has *already* started (or rather continued) working on reforms, even now - during the war. Ofc, they can't do everything during wartime & occupation, but they can still do a lot.🤷‍♀️🙂

    • @dyawr
      @dyawr ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Ukraine wanted the evaluation process fast-tracked (which it got) - not necessarily, or not really to bypass the reforms needed. 🤔
      And no, all of these countries the video mentions, have been in talks & partnerships with the EU for years now, wanting and waiting for the moment to apply or to move to the next stage... this war just gave Georgia, Moldova & Ukraine the opportunity to sign a formal candicacy request, early.
      Besides these 10 countries which have been getting closer to the EU, there really aren't many more eligible to join... - only Armenia & Azerbaijan (Kazakhstan isn't worth mentioning). And as you saw, they didn't give that signal yet. (I think once Georgia advances in its accession process, they might start to consider it seriously) 🤷‍♀️
      But you're right, the EU *is* a lot more open towards expansion now, which is a *very* good thing👍 I'm happy for those countries.

    • @dyawr
      @dyawr ปีที่แล้ว

      The EU isn't completely a rules-based organization. Internal politics & certain preferences from the stronger states, play a big role as well. Or vetoes from random members, etc.
      North Macedonia couldn't start negociations this year bc Bulgaria blocked it & Albania, for some reason, was tied to N.Macedonia in the accession process. They were/are seen as 1 package - so, bc of *political* issues, both countries were stalled.
      Before that, France also stopped accession progress a few years back, saying that the entire process needed to be reformed. And *before that,* Greece demanded Macedonia to formally change its name before anything can continue...
      This was just 1 example, there are others in which subjective political decisions, stalled or overpowered the rules-based system - for example, Romania & Bulgaria completed all the rule-based requirements to join the Schengen zone since 2011, and they're still not in to this day... 🤷‍♀️
      U are mainly right, but sometimes *it can* be EU's fault that things aren't moving fast enough..

The next would be Ukraine (again, not because I'm Ukrainian), and then Moldova, or actually, Ukraine and Moldova can become a part of the EU at the same time (to the ones who think a conflict can stop Ukraine and Moldova, it's not true. Cyprus is in the EU, while half of it is occupied. Croatia also has/had some disputed territories. So that's not the problem at all. Also, the conflict in Moldova is frozen, so it's not dangerous). Considering that support for the EU has gone down in Serbia while support for EU has risen in other countries, it seems to me that not even a war can change the attitude of the serbian people, for the better atleast.

    I'm gonna disagree on Montenegro part. It's political situation is in chaos. The most popular party,DPS is corrupt to it's core and their popularity is mostly attributed to Serbophobia,buying voters and scaring workers(if you work in a place that has DPS oriented owner,you have to vote for DPS or you're fired). Second most popular party,DF is more east oriented,publicly anti-NATO(which country entered without promised referendum) and it's leaders just wanna replace current president that has being ruling country for 33 years as next(and probably worst)dictators. Other parties are either "traditional partners" of DPS(corrupted to the core) or are to small and think they are some factor(URA). Not to mention how jurisdiction system is corrupt and how organized crime is rampant. Did I mention that Montenegro own so much to China that they are in possibility of losing their biggest port. Montenegro took so much loan from China to build it's first highway,which had being constructed for 5 years now,and despite many taken was for whole thing,only 3rd of it has been finished for now,with rest of the money gone. If EU let Montenegro in,they'll just have money sucking headache(obedient,but ever hungry for money).
    Serbia is not entering EU if recognition of Kosovo is mandatory. Serbian party that even thins of recognizing independence of Kosovo will not be even elected,except if NATO it self put on throne,which would only further distance Serbia from the west. Not to mention that it's current president is a dictator that holds firm grip on media and judicial system,freedom of speech is limited and opposition is just a bunch of thugs that would just replace current dictator and reset a cycle anew. And of course,people in Serbia are more Russian oriented than EU and its one of few places in Europe where democracy is in danger of dying.
    And I lived in both countries(currently I do live in Montenegro)I know political situation

    EU is not a fair Union and I do not believe there's a standard and honest evaluation for applicants, in reality depending on "who the applicants are". There is an obvious discrimination. EU members are acting to seem fair but somehow most of them lack honesty and transparency.

    Depending on how the war goes, Transnistria could succumb economicaly and have no other way than to negotiate a reintregration into Moldova. The problem was also that until now it was tolerated by Ukraine, they could travel and do business without documents issued by Chisinau. Of course this will not be the case anymore.
    Moldova is a relatively small country, polarised around its capital. It could be somewhat simpler to reform and modernise than larger ones, especialy that they have a pro EU president backed by its own government which also has majority in their parliament.
    Lastly, there could be a posibility that they join by uniting with Romania. Of course this is something that needs to be discussed and agreed not on a bilateral level, but higher, even within NATO.

    I think Turkey's membership is very difficult, multiple issues that cannot be resolved, 1st one being a hugh population, more than any other EU member states, if it is to join EU the balance of power will shift. Secondly, the Cyprus issue is going to take courage and understanding in order to resolve it, which is highly unlikely to happen anytime soon, religion is not an issue as many other Balkan european countries have a muslim majority or somewhat significant percentage but they are smaller in population.

    The EU can't take any more members as it is, there is already enough dysfunction as things stand and all the proposed candidate countries have long term issues. The EU needs to be reformed, either to return to the pre Schengen and Maastricht form, or federalise properly, or both, some federalise and the rest go back to what it was before 1990. In either case adding more members with Veto powers, let alone dysfunctional ones is the wrong way to go.
