    I added the kicker speakers in my doors after installing the powerstage. It sounded good with factory speakers but wow! the upgraded door speakers are insane. highly recommended

    This video really helped me out. Im going to buy a new F150 this week and Im a car audio fan. I got a whole custom setup in my car so I was looking for something more pratical than having a big subwoofer box. You made me realize that its possible now, Thank you! nice tutorial btw

    Something to consider - the angle in which your power cables go into that grommet. You typically want a lower handing loop so that moisture doesn't drip down the wire into the grommet at the firewall. Or if you seal that grommet with some RTV or some type of silicone I'm sure it'll be fine. Just a thought. Great video

    it actually sounds really crisp and clear on the video. I think i'm gonna need to make this upgrade. I more of an old school guy that would do my own mods, amp, sub box, but being a mature old man now, I can't afford to give up room in the truck. Im planning to have this truck for a long time so while I think it's a bit pricey for what it is, over time it will be worth it.

    Thanks for the video, it made my install so much simpler. I didn't need to remove 8'' screen, radio came off just fine. I definitely feel that sound is better now but there is a feeling that speakers upgrade won't hurt.

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +maximlg253 Yeah, I am sure the an upgrade of the door speakers would probably improve the sound even more but I'm pretty happy with it now. I will definitely be upgrading the door speakers if a stock one blows or I have a reason that requires removal of the door panel. I'm glad the video helped. Enjoy your new system!!

    Just installed mine with help from your video. Thanks, for the time and effort. Under the hood, there's some sound deadening material on the firewall. I ran my wires behind that. Took a little extra time, but really worth it. Can't see anything until they get close to the battery. Then of course your going to see something. System was about what I expected. Sounds good, but doesn't knock your socks off. Very dependent on the quality of media being fed in. CD's sound great, XM/Sirius sounds terrible. I use Google Play music to stream audio. On the high quality setting, most of media sounds good. Occasionally, you'll get a song that doesn't. Probably the same with the other media apps. I am having one issue however. Every so often, my equalizer settings revert back to the middle position. I usually have the treble turned up, the mid turned down, and the bass turned up. Not sure why it happens. Strange. I'll report back if I find out.
    All in all, I'm happy. I built a way better system for less money in my 2008. I did lose my space under the seat though. $1200? A bit much for the sound you get. Retaining the factory look was big for me, and being entirely plug and play helped as well. If I was still in my 20's, I'd be disappointed. At 42, I just don't have the time or patience. IMO, this is the way a $50k truck should sound from the factory.

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad the video helped. Running the wires behind the sound deadening didn't even occur to me. Good call on that! I have never had an issue with the sound adjustments reverting like you said. Hopefully it gets resolved.

    I went to local stereo shop to check on getting one of these. They literally had jUST pulled one from a truck IN ONE DAY because customer didn't like it!!! SO I got a amp and one 10" with custom box.. it is amazing... ALL BY Rockford Fosgate, the T1 series I think, shallow mount.. it hits hard, and has bass control so I can dial it back when fam is with me.. I did have to move jack ( the initially skipped telling me that, but no big deal) and now seat is 1/2" from full " up" position, not wild about it but I never leave the seat up.. so no biggy.. Best part, it was HALF the price of this system from what I saw online. You might want to check with local guys first. I went with CKR in Montgomery Al. The custom box is amazing... just beautiful! With bal set and front on high's.. it sounds like a serious amazing radio... even the installer had a big smile on his face, lol.. and was amazed how good it sounded!!! I smiled because for once, I saved half and I didn't have to do the install.. lol.. and this is just a true story, I am generally a fan of both brands.. so dont freak out, lol if you want this one, then call CKR and see if they will sale it!

      Brandon B In order for it to work and connect you have to have them use a scan tool. I’m not sure what it is though. In order for the system software to recognize it apparently.

    I know this video is over 2 1/2 years old, but just wanted to know what your thoughts still are on the system. Also, is the bass consistent at all volumes? I have the factory 100 watt 8 inch Kicker sub in my 2018 F150 and the stereo has a bass roll-off at the louder you listen. Lastly, was this installed in an Ecoboost engine? If so, did you notice any problems. Thanks.

    how did you get the driver side rear seats to come down like that?

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is a latch near the middle,in the back of the seat back. Reach behind from above and you can feel the latch. There is a little tab sticking out from that latch. Put pressure against the seat back to release the tension on the latch and pull up on that tab.

    I have this installed on my 2016 F-150 and I am having an issue that I am hoping you can help with. When I fold up the bottom of the seat on the driver's side the back of the seat frame is gouging the subwoofer enclosure. When I view what is happening from the passenger side I can see the frame hit the enclosure and then push it backward. Have you experienced that? I am pretty sure that I have the enclosure as far back as it can go. I got the kit second hand and there was a small gouge in it so the previous owner must have had the same issue. It almost seems like I have it mounted to the wrong holes on the floor. Kicker's recommendation was to either try removing insulation behind the back wall panel or to just put sound deadening material where the frame rubs. Neither of those seem like a great option.

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went ahead and dropped my seat back down to take a look. I did have some slight (really slight) rubbing on my enclosure where the seat brace pokes through the back of the seat back almost dead center at the bottom. The marks are about an inch and a half to two inches apart. If this is where you are talking about then I can see how if the enclosure was even 1/8 of an inch closer to the seat that it would cause a gouge. Like I said, the spots that are rubbing are really light on my enclosure. I might of not even noticed them if I wasn't specifically looking for them. Can you bend the mounting taps a little to help get the enclosure away? If I was to remove the carpeting and insulation where the top mounting tabs are then I'm pretty confident that mine wouldn't rub at all but it sounds like yours is a little tighter fit than mine. Of course if this isn't where yours are rubbing then ignore everything I just said. Hopefully you can get it squared away.

    • @SilentRebel
      @SilentRebel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly where I am seeing the seat frame hit the subwoofer enclosure. I have been in contact with Kicker about trying a bunch of different things and nothing has solved the issue. I didn't try bending the mounting tabs, but I will keep it in mind. I also noticed that my subwoofer was rattling and I let Kicker know and they are sending me a new subwoofer. I didn't ask for it, but I am hoping when the new subwoofer gets here that I won't have the same problem.

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully you can get it resolved. Is Kicker sending you a new subwoofer for free? If so then I would say that is pretty good customer service, especially since you bought it used second hand. Good luck with getting it resolved. Keep us posted!

    I just installed the Kicker VSS Powerstage on my 2015 f150 and as of right now I am pretty disappointed..... I have a few questions I was hoping you could help me with. There seems to quite a bit of distortion especially while listening at higher volumes, every once in awhile I will hear a static like shock sound from the front speakers. Have you ever encountered this? Does your system still remain crisp at higher volumes? When I fade my sound only to the rear speakers the sound coming from the rears is Significantly Lower than the front (muddy sounding).... is this also the case for you. I have been in contact with kicker and so far we have not been able to rectify my issues. Thanks

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't heard any kind of static/shock sound ever while listening in my truck. I usually turn up my system about 3/4 when I am streaming music through Bluetooth with my phone and have never noticed any distortion. As far as the rear speakers go, I believe Kicker tuned the DSP to use the rears more as fill. My rear speakers are definitely a lot quieter than the fronts. This is more than likely intentional to emphasize the sound stage towards the front. With the static sound and distortion you are hearing, it sounds like you might have a bad unit or perhaps something is shorting out somewhere?! I would definitely get with kicker and see if they can take care if it for you. Sorry you are not happy with your set up and hopefully kicker can resolve any issues you have.

      I removed mine and ended up sending it back..... I then upgraded the system with a JL Audio XD700 5 channel amp, JL Audio 10 inch compact sub, and used the audio control DQ-61 to integrate the factory head unit! Found a parrot wiring harness to install all the components, so I did not have to cut into the factory harness. This set up cost me around 1000 dollars and sounds amazing, the kicker VSS Powerstage does not even come close to this set up. Thanks again guys for replying!

      Scooter Pickle No, it's plug and play. I know the subwoofer only kit actually plugs into a harness that is behind the C-piller but the complete VSS plugs in to the actual audio unit/CD player. Noprgramming required. It takes the audio from the truck and does all the processing, including the subwoofer signal, on it's own.

      +Eric Robinson - Thanks, just got it ordered. I had Kicker's VSS system like this in my 14' F150, and it had a 10"... hope this sounds as good, or pretty close at least. I do LOVE how this one is behind the seat instead of under, like it was on the 14'... so guess that will make up for a little loss in performance.
      Thanks!

  • @Ydokthegreat

    Hey Eric! I was curious that if I were to only get the sub woofer and not the door speakers amp, will it still have a similar stock sound? Or will the sub woofer make a big enough difference? I'd really hate to spend an extra 600$ or so on that 200 watt amp. And if it is necessary, would it be a better idea to have a different less expensive amp installed?

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kody Oakes The amp/DSP that came in the kit really helped with the overall sound. It really "brightened" it up and brought the sound stage higher. Personally, I wouldn't have been happy if all I was adding was base. The stock sound is really bad in my opinion. That being said, $600 is a big difference in price and there is no doubt that you could probably get it cheaper by looking for something elsewhere. I guess the question would be whether you want something that is just plug and play or do you want to research, tweak, and invest time trying to find something else. Sorry about the long response.

    Great video, thanks for posting it. Huge props on contacting Kicker for the speaker recommendation. With that said did you end up installing the aftermarket speakers? Interested on your thoughts on the bass and system overall now that you have lived with a for awhile, ie any rattles, distortion at high vol ect.

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't end up putting the kicker door speakers in. I was and still am happy with the way it sounds with the stock speakers so I returned them. I haven't had any issues to date. I haven't blown Any of the stock speakers and have no rattles what so ever. As far as the bass and sound goes, keep in mind that this is an eight inch subwoofer so don't expect it to vibrate the mirrors off. That being said, I think it sounds great and has plenty of bass for me. I think kicker did a great job with the dsp and getting the most out of the stock speakers. It really is a great improvement over the stock system. Of course your opinion might differ.

  • @829marv

    • @ericmrobinson
      @ericmrobinson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marv G I think it does help the door speakers quite a bit. Music seems a lot more fuller and has a lot better separation. I had a coworker, who coincidently bought a F-150 the same day as me, was impressed with the improvement the VSS made. He thought that it was a lot more "crisp" and you could hear the highs a lot better. That being said, I am no expert and all I can give you is my opinion. It is a lot of $$ and I completely understand your hesitation. I can say that for me, the ability to keep everything stock looking, not lose any space in the cab, and the improvement in sound makes it worth it.

    Just wanted to ask everyone that has bought this system is it worth it? I'm wondering how the all in one 10 inch Kicker hideaway would sound in comparison to this system. Any thoughts? I just bought a 2016 Supercrew FX4. I love the stock sound I just want a little bump from a sub. I have the factory Navigation sound system. It's enough to shake and vibrate the rear view and side mirrors. I just want a little more. Thanks for any input.

      +Todd Howard Keep in mind that this upgrade is not going to be everything to everyone. I do think that +H0okemh0rns is absolutely entitled to his own opinion but as you can see from the overwhelming positives in the comments that this is a great upgrade for MOST. I, and many, are very happy with the upgrade but your mileage may vary. It is an expensive upgrade for what you get and you could arguably get more for less but at the possible loss of room, modifications etc. I have had for about 6 months and still have no regrets. There are 2 amps with the system a four channel for the stock speakers and a dedicated one for the sub. I can't tell you how all the signals are distributed because i have't got that deep into trying to figure it out. I haven't noticed a problem with too little bass on the quiet end and too much/distortion on the loud side. Again, it's not cheap and if you go your own custom route then you can build it exactly how you like. Either way, enjoy your new truck and good luck with your audio choice.
