An interview with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore recorded in his apartment in September 1988. Part 2: • Thurston Moore Intervi... Part 3: • Thurston Moore Intervi...
he's like an alien prophet. he looks like no one else. and i can't stop listening to his voice. ecstatic peace :) he uses funny words. what an interesting character :) cool guy. coolest guy.
You would have liked the late 80s and early 90s. Lots of guys like him around. Not to say they were the average dude or anything, but there were a dozen or a couple guys like this in every city/town. This is one if the archetypal indie rock guy/personality/apartments. Like Elvis, James Dean, John Lennon, it's one of those 'types' that were rare but common. Everybody knew a dude like this. Give or take a couple tendencies or abilities. That doesn't make any of those people less special, they were just some of the cooler people of their time.
Well Nick Cave & his band "The Birthday Party" did move to The UK & based themselves there in 1980. Cave continued to live there until 2017 when he & his family moved to Los Angeles. So by 1988 it's was fair for Thurston to say he's from England. Stop being a hipster, elitist wannabe.
This is the unedited version of their South Bank Show interview, right? I taped that programme back in the '80s (circa Daydream Nation), it's really great to see the entire thing after all this time, thanks. :)
”You know I have like a file and photo of people I’m interested in” I’ve watched this interwiev like 5 times and never taken notice of that Honastly I’m a tad bit scared
Well okay, not the best interview ever, but pretty awesome because of the setting and the cool stuff he shows us and the things they talk about. And the fact that it's Thurston Moore, you know, is pretty cool too.
I'm a bit late to the party on this interview.. but it's quite a treat! Madonnas did some photos with Richard Kern way back?! Hoping the part 2 is posted🤞🏼cheers
He famously once did an impromtu cover of the entire first side of "My War" at a show. Sonic was on SST records for awhile. I've always seen them and Dinosaur as a part of the extended Black Flag family. The Meat Puppets and Chemical People too. To name a few. It's all one story.
It's amazing how now he doesn't even need physical files he could just keep it on a computer and he could organize and search through it faster and easier.
thurston would be mad mad mad mad cool if he had a little sense of humor. he seems to weird himself out a little bit. he should laugh at himself and those old drawings and shit. smart dude. love him.
He was. He was being humble and "cracking jokes like Thurston more" (lyric from Gimmie Indie Rock by Sebadoh? Watch "1991: The Year Punk Broke" unless you're joking yourself, of course. He's famously the class clown of indie rock.
Nicholas Edward Cave (n.
People find that interview confusing and radically misinterpret it. People haven't seen how real people acted back then before and don't have much ability to accurately guage what's going on in a situation like that. Also they lack context. It's pretty funny if you knew how these things really went down back then. Everybody doesn't always act in a way that is explicitly self explanatory all the time. Intelligent people rarely do. Especially when they are goofing arpund, which is not done at all these days. Having character and being alive and wild is unheard of, and no, by that I don't mean "being mean" if you haven't experienced it you definitely don't know. It's like the taste of salt, you gotta try it, you can't guess or have it explained to you. But if you want I can try. The other aspect is something else people have trouble with: deciphering FILMED behavior and the show of interviews. Like when people don't get that everything on a nighttime talk show is rehearsed. All parties agree on exactly what will transpire before hand and people in the TH-cam comment section 40 years later are like "why are they treating her like she's dumb?" When that was the agreed angle for the shtick. That "she" probably asked them to play along with. So much to go over.
Moral Compass I wont argue that they dont have a nice design. But mate, there's this guy called Hitler you might want to read up on. Big meanie, that guy.
Well Sonic Youth was also not quite mainstream was it. There are awesome alternative or underground bands out there right now aswell. You just have to start looking for them instead of just complaining.
i like this episode of hoarders.
what a great fucking record for a gift.
This is so awesome. Its like hanging out with Thurston at his pad one night right after they recorded Daydream. Thank you for posting it uncut!

Love this, so cool to see where Thurston and Kim lived during their creative peak. Anybody got more recs as far as videos of musicians in their homes?
Aw...Thurston - what a charmer.
It's shocking to me, how old Thurston is vs how he looks.
But age is simply experience anyways
i've always wondered about that too. he's pretty much always looked 10 years younger than he actually is
Nick Cave.... a singer from England..... Ha!!

uowww..now thats something!!ahah

Honastly I’m a tad bit scared
now i feel slightly less weird that my place looks similar to that (still now that i am in my early 50s) i like it
Well okay, not the best interview ever, but pretty awesome because of the setting and the cool stuff he shows us and the things they talk about. And the fact that it's Thurston Moore, you know, is pretty cool too.

It's amazing how now he doesn't even need physical files he could just keep it on a computer and he could organize and search through it faster and easier.
"take a look at my computer files" or open a 1980s file cabinet that has smell, feel, age...
@@fastawake870 But a 1980s computer has a smell, feel, and age...
@@NESman-dm3wd agreed, but thats just one smell. can you collect fart smells on a computer? not yet..
@@fastawake870 You can open up the hardware and fart in chips and ram slots.
People who grew up in the 8os and 90s didnt grow up with home computers..so we organized and saved with paper..you get used to doing it one way.

This is all Thurston's humor..
Thurston Moore always strikes me as somebody who would have been ‘successful’ no matter what path he took in life. I don’t like that.
Could you elaborate on this? This is a fascinating take and if you wouldn’t mind I would love to hear more on this theory.
@@billscanlan5639lmao this comment creeps me out. I hope this person will give us an answer lmao I’m very curious
If you listen to him in the clips, he has a devoted work ethic and very proactive; Think how many albums they put out
Yeah… Connecticut trust fundie 💯
Fuckin bastard. Being all successful n’ shit. What a loser.
