PUNKCAST1959 Henry Rollins, author of "Occupants' (Chicago Review Press), discusses the book with Thurston Moore at McNally Jackson NYC on Oct 14 2011. henryrollins.com/ mcnallyjackson.com/
I love how Henry holds his mic. Whether it's a hardcore show or an interview in a bookstore, it's all the same, he wraps the cord around his hand as if it will get ripped away in a circle pit.
I can see Henry as being fifty easy, not in a bad way but just the buffness and the grey hair, it works. But I can never see Thurston as being anything older than 30.
I have an unlimited amount of appreciation for Henry Rollins. I've been to one of his spoken word shows and watched countless videos of him talking, and he always makes me feel like we as a species are capable of making great changes in the world and taking control of our own fate. That kind of hope is priceless.
I met Thurston at Other Music back in early 2000s and he was the friendliest guy. Offered me his copy of AMM/Merzbow 12-inch and we briefly talked about Cecil Taylor. Big fan of both of these icons. Saw Rollins Band at the old 9:30 Club (Tool opened) and then at the first Lolapooza festival.
It's funny how punk opened my eyes to politics years ago. I studied history and studied the people we have had in office in all branches and levels.... I became a fiscal conservative and part Libertarian. I still love to listen to MDC, Bad Brains, DI, ect, ect....
There's an Australian band called The Occupants. Two brothers who used to play in another Australian band called COG. Anti-establishment content - check them out :)
I really have huge respect for both these guys, but it's so evident that Henry has been doing speaking shows since his 20's; his ability to be eloquent and get his point across is so honed.
Isn't it funny how Dischord, is still alive and thriving? Just by not doing traditional things that have been destroying music labels especially in the modern age? Ian Mackaye is one of the greatest human beings ever.
@crypttonite Bang on man! I agree. I dont know why people say they are for the soldiers but not for the people who send them their. THEY CHOSE TO GO OVER THERE! Im thinking HELLO! when people say they are for the soldiers it makes absolutley no sense to me.
middle class boys think they know it all they are "for real". Honestly put them on the factory floor for 2 months as machinists where men have been there their entire lives trying to improve working conditions and ge tthe best for their kids.
this would be perfect if the backdrop of books was all Don Delillo, William T. Vollmann, David Foster Wallace, Hitchens and Dawkins and maybe the Bush Dyslexicon for kicks!
Interesting how Thurston realizes Dischord made music worth getting and keeping and it lasted, when I first heard guitars such as SY and Dischord bands they all had that guitar sound, they could hear what they were playing and they played the guitars until they knock the strings out of tune kind of sound!
I like hearing stories, why does Henry and everyone have the need to restate their position trumpeting DIY, we know what goes along with DIY, so the lack of label cushion is irrelevant. So much self- aggrandizing really, saying he's interested in people, decided to travel which is a luxury 99%of the contemporary DIY crowd will never know.
Reading "Get In The Van", kinda turned me OFF of Rollins. It made me want to tell him,"Dude, get out of the van." To be honest I can't even imagine him enjoying music. It's weird. This was a cool speaking engagement.
what Henry should do if he wants to see reality closer to home is ask factory owners if he can hang around American car factories on the plants where men are working day in day out for years on ened for shit wages. Thurston should too but i doubt he would want to be exposed to that.
yes Henry congress sends soldiers to war, there are among them plenty of individuals who love killing , and other factors perpetuate war mongering, many soldiers want to engage in what they've been trained to do, destroy & occupy. fuck war, fuck soldiering, it's an individual choice, any person could make, so it's not a stretch to p\ut myself in the position of making this choice and I do not. No people enlisting, no armies to deploy.
@heavenwithin81 people you need to wake up !!! soldiers work for the goverment democratic system of the day, if it wasnt for theses people you wouldnt have the freedom to express your opininion,if henry rollins can spend his time visiting injured soldiers, because he undestands the difference between policy making and serving your country, you guys need to think and read more!!!!!! and for your info soldiers dont decide to go anywhere they go where their country sends them!!!!
My favorite thing is when a person can be so long winded. That's play control. I really enjoy that. I see people adjusting to it and it wonderful. Learning is great that way. NO EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IMPLICATIONS HERE> I DO NOT ADVOCATE SCHOOLING>PERSONALLY. Thanks for posting this.
explain something to me. This talk was going well but then Thurston strats talking about how he is middle class and his dad was a teacher. How is this relevant to anything?
GREAT! But nervous laughter!...It’s a subconscious disease! If this was held in Istanbul or Italy would the audience ‘laugh’ as much?much the same as the ‘LIKE’ disease the popular culture has plagued the world with! On a positive note, Henry is always inspiring
I love how Henry holds his mic. Whether it's a hardcore show or an interview in a bookstore, it's all the same, he wraps the cord around his hand as if it will get ripped away in a circle pit.
clearly you've never been tossed around in a book signing pit...
I can see Henry as being fifty easy, not in a bad way but just the buffness and the grey hair, it works. But I can never see Thurston as being anything older than 30.

Henry is a remarkable man. He keeps pushing himself and constantly comes up with new and different ways to excel. Hats off to to you Hank.

thank you so much for posting this on here!
This interview and Q and A could have been 10 hours long. I couldnt get enough.
Amazing guy - getting into him as a teen (1990) lead me to so much great music and writing. Great to see him now, 20 years later still going strong.
Rollins was generous to try to give Thurston Moore equal time here, seeing as how Thurston had basically nothing interesting to contribute.
Thank you for sharing!
So great...these two are awesome.
And they're doing this all in front of a bunch of books on war. :)
It's funny how punk opened my eyes to politics years ago. I studied history and studied the people we have had in office in all branches and levels.... I became a fiscal conservative and part Libertarian.
I still love to listen to MDC, Bad Brains, DI, ect, ect....
Really excellent thank you for the upload!
I'm in love with this crazy genius.
thx for the upload
Seen Henry do spoken word since 2000 and always glad I went. He writes the story of his life very well.
when he came to Toronto it was a hundred bucks to see him
which is about 5 bucks to a kid in 1980
Great video.thanks for posting.
they're both very insightful, but Henry is just so damn good at talking, regardless whether it's something prepared or if he's put on the spot...
kept watching, was not disappointed
Both of these men are the shit!
There's an Australian band called The Occupants. Two brothers who used to play in another Australian band called COG. Anti-establishment content - check them out :)
Not to be confused with The Residents, an art rock band that wore eyeball helmets. Until one lost an eye...
Love , love , love ! Be not afraid .

it's a truly great book!
the hardest most difficult thing for a young man to do is possess the ability to think rationally with out getting angry to quickly
I wonder what Henry Rollins thinks about Thurston Moore? I mean, he's only one of the best and controversial guitar players to come out of the 80's..
Amazing, just.....fucking amazing.
need more people like rollins in this world speaking against the higher power.
@andrea naumann what does this word you keep saying mean? "Book"?

Reading "Get In The Van", kinda turned me OFF of Rollins. It made me want to tell him,"Dude, get out of the van." To be honest I can't even imagine him enjoying music. It's weird. This was a cool speaking engagement.

@jfrey1 it would be funnier and people would do more intense staring
I don't know that guy who's talking a lot I like Rollins but I'm giving up on this video because that guy loves to talk
Less bragging more Henry less interrupting.
he knows that it's us, the individuals and the choices we consciously make that will change the world. act or don't act-it's up to you.....
apolitical environment
@txtteabagger Interesting observation from a man who's handle originates from a traditionally gay sex act.
Thurston Moore looks like Beck more and more

Because Keynes is so much better right?
Ayn Rand, that wannabe groupie of Frank Lloyd Wright that he rejected.
Paul/Rollins 2016
