Thurston is really an underrated guitarist, the success hes done solo and through out the decades with sonic youth is hall of fame worthy. He's up there next to Kurt in my top 5 when it comes to vocals and riffs.
Idk if you read guitar magazines n shit but he’s pretty appreciated in guitar forums and stuff along with Lee Ronaldo usually paired up together obviously
I've changed the lyrics a bit to "fur rocket" for whenever my little dog jumps into my arms. I'll put my arms out and say fur rocket and he comes jumping up for me to catch him. Then I sing the part to him with fur rocket. Hahaha. It's good fun. I agree though, silver rocket is awesome. I really like Incinerate. My daughter is 10 and plays that song in standard tuning. Well 1/2 step down I think. I'll be starting a YT channel for her soon just to chronicle her progress. Anyways, yeah, SY is killer.
This why Thurston is my freaking hero. I started playing around with alternate tunings and I always get the same reaction of thats cool but we cant play that, you cant play just normal... it gets old.
Same here. People look and say "dude, wtf, do something normal" or "oh, thats nice, but tune to standard now". Thing is I want to start a band but have not found anyone who plays in alternate yet
I started a band (post hardcore/post punk vibe) with 4 guitars that all have different wacky tunings. I got lucky and found people who embraced that sound. Although the other guitarist only plays one guitar, and finds himself struggling to find something to do with what I play… haha.
Blues musicians back in the day took inspiration both from their own african cultural roots in terms of some timing but also from the Celt influence on bluegrass and country music prevalent at the time. Part of the reason their instruments held alternate tunings was simply because a lot of them weren't musically literate and didn't necessarily know what 'proper' tuning was (or it may have once been in tune but over time went out of tune). They often matched their own voices.
Even though I'm a standard player, I love playing punk/grunge-type riffs in D & C# standard. I even like to go as deep as Drop A on occasion. In a way Sonic Youth encouraged me to embrace these different tunings & not just stick with the typical E & D# Standard. I would like to think that music doesn't always to be "standard", generally speaking. It can be a regular tuning or a series of power chords (as often is rock music), but it can be so much more than that as well. Sonic Youth went all the way with experimenting with tuning & its created an endless plethora of possible sound landscapes. For that, I tip my hat off to Sonic Youth for showing me that music doesn't have to fit that mold or any particular vibe that might appeal to the majority or an advertising agency. Nothing wrong if that's what you like, of course, but Sonic Youth pushed that potential to its ultimate limit ✨️
In Corona CA I saw they needed “stage coordinators”? I think was the title. The sign on their warehouse building asking for walk in interviews on the spot a couple weeks ago.
This whole time I thought Lee was in studio room behind them, nodding with what Thurston was saying… Towards the end of video, I realized, it wasn’t Lee, but in fact the interviewer..
@@amremorse Another crap video for Slimed which is alright but not something i'd spend my time listening to when there is so much Kind Crimson Music to hear.
Hey Fender, please stop spoiling American Jazzmasters with modern sounding V-mod and noiseless pickups, or at least make more AV/AO spec guitars. Thank you.
"I was never in a cover band." Thurston Moore, king of cool.
"My favorite bands were the bands that were room-clearers anyway, so that was the pantheon that I wanted to be in." -Thurston Moore
That's literally me as a human being.

I just cant get over his personality
Always interesting to hear Thurston talk. Love Sonic Youth
Nick Reinhart is a league in his own. So cool he got to do this. Plus hes a great interviewer, clearly a fan but came off as a friend.
Somehow the universe has brought us to a place wherein 62 year old Thurston Moore and 59 year old Dave Mustaine look nearly identical.
Lol
LMAOOO
Yes, I can see that! Two of my favourite guitarists combined 🤘
@@markbarrett4440 imagine them trying to jam😅
Put were huge fans of hardcore punk in the late 1970s
I love their weird concepts and guts to play and exist the way they did
Wait, is that the dude from Tera Melos? I couldn't recognize him with the small pedalboard lol
Silver rocket is my fav sonic youth song

A lot of people don't realize that blues and country are opposite sides of the same coin.
What was Thurston doing with the drum stick at the beginning?
Sonic Youth are known for jamming them under the strings to act as another bridge, it is heaps of fun in an open tuning
HE SHOVED IT UP HIS BUM AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA
YES
right on Thurston, years/decades since I've played in it & doubt I could barely manage even 'Louie Louie' in standard now
Nick almost looks like he could be Lee Ranaldo's son
Now I can't unsee it
Great interview!
2 awesome players!!
Rip to all the people that popped their b string trying to tune to their weird tunings
😭😭
Can’t wait to hear Undo K From Hot
They kinda sound like machine girl 😳
absolutely 💯 my dont follow the rules hero 🎸 ....Punk Rock

Do drop D to get that Gothic country D chord. It's addictive.
Hmm, signed up for the trial in order to see the rest of this, but it doesn't seem to be on there.
Wow!!
Thurston!!
Some of these comments are so ridiculous. Normies need to stick to Joe Bonamassa videos
He's a good lad 🙂
Sorry I don’t need your help Thurston said just to do it by ear.
hi akiva
IS FENDER HIRING NICK OMG IM SO HAPPY
In Corona CA I saw they needed “stage coordinators”? I think was the title. The sign on their warehouse building asking for walk in interviews on the spot a couple weeks ago.
So what tunings exactly?
Does anyone have an ID on his shirt? it bangs
This is not fair, I was a kid and 100% was playing on Mtv and he was a kid, now I feel time is not a healer...
This whole time I thought Lee was in studio room behind them, nodding with what Thurston was saying…

So cool!!

he's an alien right?
Thurston's gotta hang out with this dork for an hour.
That dork has one of the wildest bands around.

why does he sound like rick kirkham
Two guys with guitars talking about plying guitars…hmmm.
I feel he is downplaying his guitar skills. I am sure he would rock anyone's socks off in any tuning.
I hate hearing clueless people telling great people what they're doing.
Nick Reinhart?
Didn’t like the interviewer, he was kind of annoying but good interview
Nick could use some help tuning out his parasitic “like” drone. “You know, like…” Stop it!
Is this a joke? They're not even playing the freakin guitar...
It’s called an interview.
useless conversation as they say basic stuffs that noobies will find too basic and pro already knew it...
