It breaks my heart good old times...
I'm still rolling with the iPhone 5. Even if it's 2 years old it still runs everything without lag. It is still lightning fast for every application I run. I'm waiting for the iPhone 6 to decide if I want android or apple for my next phone.
Believe me go with IOS. It's better for different things. Androids are great for hacking while ios(Apple) has a great app store, and a very nice camera nothing special but it will do. It's of nice size not too huge. Take this from someone with an Android even though I'm happy with me HTC 1 but the 5s is much better....

How did the iPhone 5s not make it into this video? It was the fastest phone of 2013, had a fingerprint scanner, large camera sensor, TrueTone flash, and a motion co-processor. It definitely should have made the list.

Guys, calm down! Apple blew a lot of people's minds with the A7 chip, as it was a dual core that beat the quad core CPU in the GS4 and several other phones. I was just stating that the iPhone 5s had a lot of features important to 2013 smartphones. Besides, if the iPhone sucks so much, explain why Google, LG, Samsung, Nokia, HTC, Huawei, Pantech, and many, many more companies copied the iPhone. Look at EVERY "smartphone" before the iPhone. Then after the iPhone came out with a Multi-Touch display, notice how every smartphone now has a touchscreen display and the same basic, overall design as the iPhone. What everyone else did was copy Apple's iPhone and now they profit more because there are so many of them running Android, a blatantly obvious copy iOS, with a few features added, mostly useless ones, and a VERY slightly different user interface.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP, should I get a Samsung galaxy s4 refurbished in 'excellent cosmetic condition' and install cyanogenmod 12 on it so its running android 5.0 but it may have some bugs :/ or should I get a used, not as good condition-you can tell its been used as it has some scruffed up edges-nexus 5 running android l on it. PLEASE REPLY. Thanks!
I'd say the LG G flex deserves a mention, because of the flexible chassis and the healing back as it showed what smartphones in the near future will have.
I love my S4!
It may have some gimmicky software, and be made of plastic, but no amount of build quality can make up for the ability to be able to replace my battery on the go! I use 2 batteries and can effectively run my phone constantly, and just charge the batteries on their own as needed.

Great video as usual, MKBHD! I got the Nexus 5 (I guess for us non-reviewers what we own or pine for is our #1). I think it's a great example of the software experience making the hardware less important. I would love a more decked out 'Nexus 5 Premium' or a Nexus 'Note' or a Galaxy Note 3 Play Edition. Can't seem to move away from the 'stock' Android experience without cringing a little. What would be your most desired improvement to the N5: Battery? Display?
Iphone 5s. A fingerprint scanner and a 64 bit proccessor. That changed 2013 more than the motox.
The Atrix had the first, the second is useless.
ok the its the first that actually works and not really. As a game developer I have been really captivated by its power and it can run console quality games now at about 26 fps. so yeah.
The point is that it wasn't innovative. The idea for both was already on the table methaphoricly
so was fast updates!

In terms of making a difference in the industry, here is my top 10 list in order:
1. The Apple iPhone 5S for greatly improving phone unlocking with fingerprint scanners, having a really great design, and introducing 64-bit architecture to mobile, which has also made a really fast dual core phone. I know others may not agree though.
2. I'd say the HTC One is next on the list for proving android phones can have great build quality, and its front facing speakers are pretty cool.
3. The LG Google Nexus 5 (Which I have) for proving you can have a top of the line phone with few compromises for a cheap price. The Nexus 4 had too many compromises.
4. The Moto X, for the wooden back and other customisations, also conveniences like Touchless Control. But I can't get it in the UK so that's annoying.
5. The Nokia Lumia 1020 for the 41MP Camera which proves some possibilities for the future, but Windows Phone still has many flaws coming from experience.
6. The Moto G for making Android more popular and for being cheap with good specs and performance.
7. The Samsung Galaxy S4 for making Android much more popular, it also proved that most consumers mainly buy phones for the gimmicks.
8. The LG G2 for innovating button design and being a great phone spec-wise,
9. The LG G Flex for self-healing technology but the phone is pretty expensive.
10. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for 4K Video, and for for the 3GB of ram which could be considered unnecessary.

HTC One. It's my personal phone & I love it, for the same reasons you listed. It's robust, incredibly well built for a modern phone, and the front facing speakers are now an essential part of my requirements. I also like the camera - though I didn't feel it was the best - the inbuilt microphone that can handle high volume levels, the screen, and of course the way it looked. It's the sexiest phone I've ever seen. I'm so happy with it & have had zero interest in upgrading despite advancements in camera quality. I also prefer the UI compared to my old Sony Xperia Arc S.
Best part of this video? No mention of the iPhone.

2. Nokia Lumia 1020 (I would never buy it because its a windows phone, but the push for a good camera is important)
1. Moto X
I'm still in love with my Nexus 4 so didn't bother upgrading this year! I think it says a lot when after 12 months of owning a phone you look at all the new models but can't see a reason to upgrade. Sure the camera is average; speakers not great and battery life could be slightly better but its the overall experience for me that makes the phone.
This is the beauty of the Nexus program I guess; if the software keeps up to date they have at least a 2 year + shelf life.

***** my upgrade was a Samsung 550 Chromebook. Best buy I've ever made. I'll get the new Nexus phone next year. My original N7 still performs great so I'll go for a third year from it.

Interesting year with dominace from Android, amazing phones from Nokia. Fingerprint scanner and 120fps video capture in 5s. Motorola is back in business! And so small bezels on the G2 (why plastic, makes it feel so cheap..)
Looking forward to next year, especially for Nokia and Motorola. They will probarbly produce my next device :)
I think i would go with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung s22 ultra as my personal favorites from 2013
