Thanks for this. Do you know if the Shimano FC-M361 175mm 42/32/22 chainring would work if only using for the crank arms? Planning on going with the same chainring as you.
what model can you recomment if i want to "upgrade" my 2023 trek marlin 4 gen 2, to a 1 x 9 or maybe 1x10 drivetrain. bit confused on the compatibilit. sorry for newbie question
Hi, I didn’t use a new bottom bracket because I used a crankset that allowed me to unbolt the old chainrings and put a single Raceface chainring on. This allowed me to retain the original bottom bracket.
Firstly great video! Second I used the exact same shimano crank and my chain instantly falls off the front chain ring. I mounted my single chain ring on the inside of the crank like you did to give it the best chain line possible. Weird I used the exact same parts on a marlin 5 gen 2 and it causes the chain to drop off the front within a couple pedal strokes. The only way I can see to make it work is to actually space the front chain ring toward the bottom bracket.
@@PangazShed Thanks for the reply. I Tried the factory chain and another brand new one. Both of which should work. As soon as I put the old 2x front chain ring on the bike has no issues at all on either chain ring. When I measure the chaine link with the single chain ring its outside of what the spec is for my bike. Really odd. Again appreciate the reply1
@@OneStepClosa I did. It was actually the cheap chain ring that was the issue. I had used an Amazon chain ring. When I replaced it with a brand name one the problem was fixed. Likely just got a bad one as I’ve used other Amazon chain rings and haven’t had an issue.
I'm confused as to how your Marlin came with an 8sp freehub when all the Marlin 5's come with 7sp freehubs. I'm having the worst time figuring this out. I have no idea what driver fits in the dc-27 that i have
My Marlin 5 was a 2022 model (it was bought mid- late 2021) so that’s probably why is has the dc-22 hub. Mines not technically a gen 2 Marlin but perhaps these are the differences between the 2021 Marlin 5 and the 2022.
Great video dude and the bike looks sick! I'm probably going to do this mod myself but without the 11speed conversion on the back. Was just wondering how easy it was to do the conversion to 1x on the front and if you needed any weird tools. Or if you have any other tips it would be much appreciated.
Changing the front chainring should be straight forward. Normal tools to remove the front chain guide, crank arms etc. The chain might need to be changed to suit the teeth of the new single chainring (if it’s narrow-wide). If you want to change the crank assembly to something more exotic then you will need a bottom bracket tool to suit. But if sticking with simple taper bearing as I have then proceed! Cheers!
