This is the type of game that randomly pops into my mind with me doing certain movements + combos like I would with my favorite fighting games. The movement options in this game are so satisfying and unique without being too complex on an initial playthrough. Adore this game with my soul, what a gem

@seyezz any other games from recent years that have gotten your attention from that definition? For me, i was very much taken with the likes of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, Soulstice, Cookie Cutter, No Straight Roads, Lost in Random and the upcoming Blud, Resistor, Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip, Loco Motive and My Familiair. And more.
I love how much this game makes you feel like a performer, encouraging you to finish levels in one continuous combo, or “performance”, and one mistake drops it forever, just the fact that getting hit during a combo denies you the points for it. But complete runs are so spectacular that it’s worth the trial and error and failure to achieve that greatness. This game shows me the importance of performance.
Playing through this game makes me feel like replaying A Hat In Time for the first time all over again. The whimsy and silliness, with lovable characters. Alright Emerldd you’ve convinced me I’ve seen this game time and time again thru sponsored segments but how you describe the game, at least to a mediocre Speedrunner, I’m now excited to try it
I absolutely loved this game and I’m glad the developers created something of their own. It’s free to use and expand upon the way Classic Sonic was designed, using level geometry and rolling physics to go fast creatively. But it’s not shackled to someone else’s IP so it’s not subject to the baggage, mandates and restrictions that come alongside that To me, this game was so much better than a hypothetical Mania 2 would have been. I predicted that it’d get a lukewarm critical reception at first, but impressions would grow more positive after people learned how to use the mechanics and the level design started to make sense
Yeah I think this game is so so good! Only downside is that it’s fighting the uphill battle of being a new IP so there’ll be a lot of people to write it off at first. But that’s why we gotta spread the good word of Penny!!
This game is genuinely special. Its been many years since I've played a truly innovative 3D platformer. It takes classic design principles from stuff like Mario, Sonic and Kirby and makes something truly new. It takes a big risk with how high the skill cieling is, a risk i think pays off because of the freedom and expression it gives you to complete the level in any way you want. I love games like Sonic and NiGHTS (most SEGA games really) where once the unusual playstyle clicks, you keep playing to get better and faster. The score multiplier is just the cherry on top of these beautiful, skill-based, endlessly replayable games that I can't get enough of.
Yeah I think the most sad thing about this game is, people won’t take the time to get good at the game and truly enjoy it. Knowing practically nothing about this game, your description of the game's fluid movement reminded me a lot of Pizza Tower, which is another platformer that puts great emphasis on player movement and playing the game your own way. I wasn't interested in this game before, but now I'm thinking I might pick it up some time. Good job!
@@Emerldd If you can get past the crude, almost "Ren & Stimpy"-like art style, there's an extremely surprising amount of depth to the gameplay. It's not what you would expect from a silly MS Paint pizza game, but for the record, I had more fun with that game than I ever did with Celeste (although I'm sure most people would consider that a hot take).
You are actually my goat for making this, I’ve been saying this for weeks and there aren’t many other fans of this game and more people should check it out It’s so incredibly underrated Thank you👍
absolutely! its not really a game i would normally make videos on but like its just TOO GOOD i enjoy playing it so much so i just wanted to make something to appreciate it and maybe spread the word a lil bit
I sort of had this same feeling but with Pseudoregalia. Been playing platformers forever but that game just has 100% absolutely everything I love about platformers in one game. I still need to check this game out tho.
Unlike Spark The Electric Jester or Rolling Rascal, Penny’s Big Breakaway is the Only Sonic inspired game I see standing on its own two feet. It’s gameplay isn’t just a Sonic Clone but something Unique, and the World/Characters have their own distinct charm. Really wish I could play this but it’s not on PS4.
Granted the game has its problems as they all do. Honestly my top 3d platformer is 'Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom'. Its trul unique game and while humor can be hit or miss to people the controls and level design except like 2 level themes are to die for. You can do so much with just a charge move and canceling said charge move its insane.
To be honest, I don’t think Sega would let them make a 3D Sonic with this kind of skill ceiling. Modern Sonic is more accessible and designed around instant gratification cause they’re trying to cross-promote cartoons and movies to kids, and they need that green metascore Penny is free to directly cater to its audience, even if that means journalists will play it once before learning the mechanics, slap a 5/10 on it and move on. I’d love a Sonic like this, but I think there’s more potential in Evening Star staying indie
we need compnies and indie developers to make more 3d platformers. I dont think they do as bad as some people think. I grew up on them and always love finding any i get hold of. Though their are some bad ones which dissapoint me.
i agree and disagree! i think the main thing is that platformers are more appealing generally to people that are mid 20s and older since they grew up with them so theres a big market there but people younger then that dont have the same attachment that people like me do. but my bias is i would LOVE more games like this LMAO
Here are few indie 3d platformers if you want them. Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom Mail Mole + 'Xpress Deliveries Demon Turf Pilfer: Story of Light New Super Lucky's Tale Kao the Kangaroo Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara Conbunn Cardboard Cavern of Dreams Corn Kidz 64 The Big Catch (only a demo but its a Really well made BIG demo larger than some full relesed games) Hope you can have fun with these. Many people just kinda asume 3d platformers as a genre is dead when its not the case.
RIGHT? dude i need to get on Sea of Stars. its not a game i would typically stream/speedrun so its hard to work those games in and my RPG backlog is messed up rn LMAO i got like 1000 hours worth of games to work through
@@Emerldd you’re really missing out on Sea of Stars, I was never a fan of turn-based rpgs but never once have I got bored playing Sea of Stars. It just hits different. And for speedrunning the game, it’s not really a game you can speedrun and I like it that way.
im not the biggest fan of 2D platformers and the style of Pizza Tower is not my thing, but it seems people really like it so sounds like a nice comparison? LOL
I wonder if the devs of PBB took some Insparation from a hat in time. The first thing I’ve thought about this game when I saw this was maybe it’s a JSR inspired platformer
It’s good that Astro is getting a lot of attention, but at the same time I can’t look at this and not say that it looks even better. It’s a shame this didn’t go bigger
spark 3 is really good dont get me wrong! This game clicked a lot more for me though and i enjoy it more personally but thats just my opinion you know? both cooked
@@Emerldd totally makes sense , the mix of combat and speed doesn't always work but when the game cooks it COOKS I'd say I thought the controlls in sp3 were better while pbb had better style
I've got to give this one a try sometime. That being said... "Best"? I see it in a style and sense of the way, but I'm one of those guys that really was scratching my head around the hype of Mario 3D world, especially when that was dismissed as that generation's "one 3D mario". I came from Spyro & Mario 64 as not some of my big favorites, but like... THE big gateway into really loving games as a whole. Platformers like this look like a ton of fun mechanically, but I'm always slightly bothered by how giberish the world is. It feels like a soul to actually enjoying the 3D is taken out a bit. ... but that's just me going about it the slower and immersed way. I still get the appeal of speed, how tools and ideas sync up, the flow of a good run and intensity of the right obstacles, and how much of a gift stuff like this is the speed runners out there. And it still looks like a ton of fun.
I mean you said it yourself. Because games like Mario 64 and Spyro got you into gaming I don’t think there will be any games that give you that feeling. I am 100% coming from the perspective that the raw mechanics of this game are the best I’ve ever experienced, coupled with a level design that makes them perfect to use. However I still think games like Mario Odyssey are better games/experiences overall. I don’t understand your perspective as much since I haven’t ever played more than an hour of Mario 3D World. But idk “soul” is very subjective either way
By the looks of it and by the title of this video, I was waiting for at least a mention to A Hat in Time. And I don't want to say that this game is bad, it looks pretty good! But "the Best 3D Platformer ever made" is something I hear a lot about the game I'm mentioning in this comment.
Yea, Spark the Electric Jester 3 would like a word with you... You say that this game has it's own flair, yet I saw a lot of frankensteining from other franchises going on. The yoyo spin for instance is just ratchet's wrench move. The yoyo floor roll is just yooka laylee retile roll...stuff like that. While the game looks fantastic and I don't want to take away from that, it's nowhere near unique. I mean, Spark the Electric Jester 3 is like Sonic (but actually good), fused with Devil May Cry. Everybody borrows from everyone.
Ok but notice how you noted different mechanics from different games that had different mechanics. This game is unique because it puts those different things together and no one has done that! Also it adds its own flair with the yo yo mechanics. I mean you could make that argument for any game ever if a character runs or jumps it takes from other games you know? Also don’t get me wrong I like spark 3, just didn’t like it as much as this game!
@@EmerlddLol, yea, that was my whole point of the comment. There's not such thing as new ideas, just ideas that have been not used, long forgotten or popular :D So, for spark 3, I have to ask, did you try any of the advanced techs in that game?
I cant wait to try this game out but I can't decide on whether to get it for Switch or Steam, especially seeing as Switch is getting a 60fps patch. Do you also think a physical edition is inevitable?
not sure about the physical edition tbh i dont see something like that coming out till way down the line tbh but as far as switch or steam i would def reccommend getting it on steam because playing this game at framerates above 60 is sooooo nice. I play on 165 and its so smooth
@@Emerldd Oh okay didn't know you could go above 60, tbh 60 to me seems fine if the switch version can hit it consistently (that's a big if) but I might just double dip cause I wanna support the game. Thanks.
I was seeing some Steam reviews that were a little negative about the physics not always working, so that kept me from picking it up right away. I would love for the comments to change my mind, though.
I think this game is pretty consistent! No lie there was a bunch of little things that could go wrong with interaction with the yo-yo but a recent patch has fixed basically all of those issues! Def would recommend this game!
ye i been doing runs of it on my twitch :D idk how much penny content ill post overall since i dont know if itll be that popular but ill def be playing it on stream!
Nah it’s my favorite Mario game and and I think SMO is a better game overall but I like the platforming in Penny more than the platforming in SMO! But don’t get me wrong its not like SMO is bad I love that game
@@Emerldd fair enough yeah haven't played the game yet but gotta say it looks really cool Might as well give it a try whenever I get the chance. Hey cool video btw
i havent played the demo no. heard really good things about it though! i just know the finished product isnt gonna be out for a long time so i figured i might as well wait until its done since its got a lot more development to go
I feel like, this game is experimental at absolute worst and good at best Why? Because just playing the stage, stopping and going is a pretty good time. Knowing that there are higher routes and you can take them reactionary style if you sense them coming is nice too and adds to the game flow as well Where this game becomes nearly as bad as, and this is pretty hot to say, SONIC FREAKING 06 Is when you try to do a stage without stopping and skip all the slow segments which, are skippable Now I know this is harsh criticism but let me explain Whitehead and his team made TWO D games most of their life, so to not perfectly nail a THREE D game is expected But when I'm expected to have near unbroken combos and go as fast as possible without stopping and a random interaction happens because this game works like sonic riders where it tells you nothing that you're capable of doing And as I'm on this tangent, fair point not everything need be explicitly told and that works fine But when a random interaction I can't predict happens when it's not been happening as often or I clip through the ground or wall by accident doing something the game CLEARLY couldn't handle and wasn't designed to recognize because I'm trying to play at my best As well as trying to grab power ups and do the whirling motion on the ground before the game considers it a broken combo which, first of all WHY does it only work most of the time to grab power ups with the whirl and on the ground Everything the game tries to implicitly ask you to master without telling you that if you're not pixel perfect with a wall or on the wrong wall or something you just...can't go up it which the game also doesn't tell you WASTES YOUR SWING ability which, fine that you can't just fly over the stage with unlimited swings a la spiderman but still it's finicky There's not enough quality control to merit doing what the game expects you to do to a perfect level and it shows because for the first game in 3d this team made I can understand after all the rage I had getting better and finally quitting because of just all the random bugs that this should have been expected, not unforeseen But they nailed so much of what makes platformers fun on a surface level while failing to make it handle more deep interactions despite encouraging the player to try them because it's a tony hawk inspired game Sorry for the long rant, this is just sometimes how I get things out and it should be known That this game has plenty of chinks in its design you would NOT notice on a normal non perfect beginners playthrough Like, game, if you want me to push you to your absolute limit to do the best I can to clear a stage with a good score, PLEASE HANDLE the interactions better. Skill issue somewhat I know but the glitches are there and present regardless where they shouldn't and normally wouldn't be by a more refined 3d game dev team As in one that has done that all their life, not saying evening star is a bad company by any means Also ZERO camera control to mitigate the camera control being an issue and barely a drop shadow as well as the other things i talked about leading to bad depth perception? Not a solution! SADX imo is the best ever made because despite its glitches and everything IT STILL FUNCTIONS when you break it a little
I have seen both positive and negatives opinions on this game. Mainly negative. The main negative is when you try to be explorative and play it at a mid skill level. I've heard playing it slower and not using all the moves is pretty boring. And valid cause you can beat the game not using the more complex moves. But I'll have to see for myself if I would even try to do the more complex moves
This is the type of game that randomly pops into my mind with me doing certain movements + combos like I would with my favorite fighting games. The movement options in this game are so satisfying and unique without being too complex on an initial playthrough. Adore this game with my soul, what a gem

oh dang, you on switch maybe? im on PC but to be fair i got a beefy one so i didnt have any issues with that
No I am on PC, My PC just sucks.@@Emerldd
Knowing practically nothing about this game, your description of the game's fluid movement reminded me a lot of Pizza Tower, which is another platformer that puts great emphasis on player movement and playing the game your own way. I wasn't interested in this game before, but now I'm thinking I might pick it up some time. Good job!
HELL YEAH 🥳 you know, pizza tower has really not seemed like my thing but SO many people are recommending it I should really give it a try
This looks like a Gamecube game!
You are actually my goat for making this, I’ve been saying this for weeks and there aren’t many other fans of this game and more people should check it out
It’s so incredibly underrated
Thank you👍
absolutely! its not really a game i would normally make videos on but like its just TOO GOOD i enjoy playing it so much so i just wanted to make something to appreciate it and maybe spread the word a lil bit
Good to hear that this game is so good, considering the fact that I already have it. Haven't gotten very far but I find it a lot of fun so far.
HELL YEAH hope you enjoy the rest of the game :D
I sort of had this same feeling but with Pseudoregalia. Been playing platformers forever but that game just has 100% absolutely everything I love about platformers in one game. I still need to check this game out tho.
All I want now is for Christian Whitehead to be given the next NiGHTS-game.
Thanks for recommending again, wanted to try it out since the announcement, but there were/are too many other games in the way. ;)
hell yeah! sad the sales werent super good for this game but its def worth the playthrough especially if it goes on sale
hoping to see this game get all the love it deserves this year🙏
Absolutely dude! Thanks again for letting me use some of your footage 😎
I can taste the tee lopes in the soundtrack
god damn does this man cook
This is the best video about the best 3D platformer ever made.
IM THE GOAT 💯😤😤😤😤😤 (thanks for watching :D)
Sonic would love to be friends with penny
I WOULD LOVE THEM TO BE FRIENDS THATD BE SO COOL
If only I wasn't financially responsible and good at platformers
Time to become financially irresponsible 💯
Unlike Spark The Electric Jester or Rolling Rascal, Penny’s Big Breakaway is the Only Sonic inspired game I see standing on its own two feet. It’s gameplay isn’t just a Sonic Clone but something Unique, and the World/Characters have their own distinct charm. Really wish I could play this but it’s not on PS4.
ah damn yeah, hope you get the chance to play it on something else one day because this game just feels so addicting to play!
I wouldn't be surprised if Sega hires the Sonic Mania team to help with the next 3D Sonic. Now that they know how to make a good 3D platformer
Honestly I wonder if they would go back. Idk the reasoning behind the split but if things ended amicably then who knows maybe!
To be honest, I don’t think Sega would let them make a 3D Sonic with this kind of skill ceiling. Modern Sonic is more accessible and designed around instant gratification cause they’re trying to cross-promote cartoons and movies to kids, and they need that green metascore
Penny is free to directly cater to its audience, even if that means journalists will play it once before learning the mechanics, slap a 5/10 on it and move on.
I’d love a Sonic like this, but I think there’s more potential in Evening Star staying indie
@@mredbadger I mean more
Co-developing a game. Just like how Retro Studios made the retro Circuits in Mario Kart 7
@@Shadow-Joop-157yeah, that makes sense. I hope Evening Star gets to forge their own identity rather than just doing Sonic again ofc
we need compnies and indie developers to make more 3d platformers.
Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom
Mail Mole + 'Xpress Deliveries
Demon Turf
Pilfer: Story of Light
New Super Lucky's Tale
Kao the Kangaroo
Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara
Conbunn Cardboard
Cavern of Dreams
Corn Kidz 64
The Big Catch (only a demo but its a Really well made BIG demo larger than some full relesed games)
Hope you can have fun with these. Many people just kinda asume 3d platformers as a genre is dead when its not the case.
I swear indie games are cooking since last year. First Sea of Stars being my best game of 2023 and this game might be mine for 2024.
RIGHT? dude i need to get on Sea of Stars. its not a game i would typically stream/speedrun so its hard to work those games in and my RPG backlog is messed up rn LMAO i got like 1000 hours worth of games to work through
@@Emerldd you’re really missing out on Sea of Stars, I was never a fan of turn-based rpgs but never once have I got bored playing Sea of Stars. It just hits different. And for speedrunning the game, it’s not really a game you can speedrun and I like it that way.
Have you played Demon Turf: Neon Splash? It's a short game but there's a focus on speed and time trials and the movement feels so good.
ive played it a bit actually! not super deep into the game but it was pretty cool the little i played
3d pizza tower
im not the biggest fan of 2D platformers and the style of Pizza Tower is not my thing, but it seems people really like it so sounds like a nice comparison? LOL
This is like if you played Pizza Tower by skipping over the levels rather than going through them and dealing with the obstacles.
Even before I heard about the devs, the song sounded like a sonic song.
It’s a shame this didn’t go bigger
yeah absolutely. I dont have a ps5 but astro bot looking SUUPER nice like as good as a mainline 3D Mario or Sonic release
This looks like you crossed like 5 different 3D Platformers
What do you mean?
I wouldnt say best bc that would go to spark 3 but man is it still so fun
spark 3 is really good dont get me wrong! This game clicked a lot more for me though and i enjoy it more personally but thats just my opinion you know? both cooked
@@Emerldd totally makes sense , the mix of combat and speed doesn't always work but when the game cooks it COOKS
I'd say I thought the controlls in sp3 were better while pbb had better style
I love pomni's big digital breakaway
me too...me too
I've got to give this one a try sometime.
But idk “soul” is very subjective either way
It's rare that a game comes along.
Along what? 💀
@@Emerldd prematurely ending sentences is the height of comedy, you must understand.
Ive just notice that penny looks like a chipmunk, I cant be the only one seeing this right?

This game looks so good, I may have to cop this
I bought the game because of this video thanks em
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ENJOY IT DUDE :D
By the looks of it and by the title of this video, I was waiting for at least a mention to A Hat in Time.
And I don't want to say that this game is bad, it looks pretty good! But "the Best 3D Platformer ever made" is something I hear a lot about the game I'm mentioning in this comment.
never personally played a hat in time but i def should! ive heard good things!
There's not such thing as new ideas, just ideas that have been not used, long forgotten or popular :D
So, for spark 3, I have to ask, did you try any of the advanced techs in that game?
I cant wait to try this game out but I can't decide on whether to get it for Switch or Steam, especially seeing as Switch is getting a 60fps patch. Do you also think a physical edition is inevitable?
not sure about the physical edition tbh i dont see something like that coming out till way down the line tbh
but as far as switch or steam i would def reccommend getting it on steam because playing this game at framerates above 60 is sooooo nice. I play on 165 and its so smooth
@@Emerldd Oh okay didn't know you could go above 60, tbh 60 to me seems fine if the switch version can hit it consistently (that's a big if) but I might just double dip cause I wanna support the game. Thanks.

I love this games aesthetic!
RIGHT? ITS SICK!
Could you please make a PBB movement guide.
Wait image the runs tho!
yeah i been speedrunning this game! its pretty hard to do all the hard strats consistently but its crazy fun :D
Are you going to speedrun this game? 🤔
ye i been doing runs of it on my twitch :D
idk how much penny content ill post overall since i dont know if itll be that popular but ill def be playing it on stream!
Super mario odissey: am I a joke to you?

Me before the Video: I find it boring
Me at 4:29: Gift the game to me, I don't have money lmbo
Hope you get to play it someday!
I feel like, this game is experimental at absolute worst and good at best
Why?
Because just playing the stage, stopping and going is a pretty good time. Knowing that there are higher routes and you can take them reactionary style if you sense them coming is nice too and adds to the game flow as well
Where this game becomes nearly as bad as, and this is pretty hot to say, SONIC FREAKING 06
Is when you try to do a stage without stopping and skip all the slow segments which, are skippable
Now I know this is harsh criticism but let me explain
Whitehead and his team made TWO D games most of their life, so to not perfectly nail a THREE D game is expected
But when I'm expected to have near unbroken combos and go as fast as possible without stopping and a random interaction happens because this game works like sonic riders where it tells you nothing that you're capable of doing
And as I'm on this tangent, fair point not everything need be explicitly told and that works fine
But when a random interaction I can't predict happens when it's not been happening as often or I clip through the ground or wall by accident doing something the game CLEARLY couldn't handle and wasn't designed to recognize because I'm trying to play at my best
As well as trying to grab power ups and do the whirling motion on the ground before the game considers it a broken combo which, first of all WHY does it only work most of the time to grab power ups with the whirl and on the ground
Everything the game tries to implicitly ask you to master without telling you that if you're not pixel perfect with a wall or on the wrong wall or something you just...can't go up it which the game also doesn't tell you WASTES YOUR SWING ability which, fine that you can't just fly over the stage with unlimited swings a la spiderman but still it's finicky
There's not enough quality control to merit doing what the game expects you to do to a perfect level and it shows because for the first game in 3d this team made I can understand after all the rage I had getting better and finally quitting because of just all the random bugs that this should have been expected, not unforeseen
But they nailed so much of what makes platformers fun on a surface level while failing to make it handle more deep interactions despite encouraging the player to try them because it's a tony hawk inspired game
Sorry for the long rant, this is just sometimes how I get things out and it should be known
That this game has plenty of chinks in its design you would NOT notice on a normal non perfect beginners playthrough
Like, game, if you want me to push you to your absolute limit to do the best I can to clear a stage with a good score, PLEASE HANDLE the interactions better. Skill issue somewhat I know but the glitches are there and present regardless where they shouldn't and normally wouldn't be by a more refined 3d game dev team
As in one that has done that all their life, not saying evening star is a bad company by any means
Also ZERO camera control to mitigate the camera control being an issue and barely a drop shadow as well as the other things i talked about leading to bad depth perception? Not a solution!
SADX imo is the best ever made because despite its glitches and everything IT STILL FUNCTIONS when you break it a little
music = bbu vibes
im sorry im very dumb whats bbu LOL

I have seen both positive and negatives opinions on this game. Mainly negative. The main negative is when you try to be explorative and play it at a mid skill level.
I've heard playing it slower and not using all the moves is pretty boring. And valid cause you can beat the game not using the more complex moves.
But I'll have to see for myself if I would even try to do the more complex moves
