It's floor raiser vs role on a championship team. Jrue is more versatile than Westbrook and so contributes more than him. You can argue versatility is more valuable than floor raising unless you're at the cream of the top of floor raising like bron, Luka, jokic, e.t.c.

you can critize jrue ability to handle the ball all you want, russ is not a good flor general, yes he gets attention from the defense and and generate good looks in his prime but he is so overrated as floor general is not even funny, as soon he lost some athleticism he fell off a cliff for a reason, he is not that good as a decision maker.
jrue fits better in 99% of playoffs/contenders, russ needs to main focus of the offense to be his best self that in it self has capped your teams ability to win it all.

So he wasn’t the best player for OKC in the 2016-17 season where his second and third best teammates were Victor Oladipo and Steven Adams? In his MVP season? Yea okay. Or that first year with Paul George in 2017-18 with Carmelo where PG only averaged 21 a game for the season and had one of his worst playoff series of his career against the Jazz? Keep in mind Russ averaged a 25 point triple double that year and was on the all-nba team.
Let’s not act like the injury bug was only for those 2 guys by the way. Russ tore his meniscus via Patrick Beverley in the 2013 playoffs during that 60 win season OKC had where everyone almost unanimously had them going to the finals again. In 2015, KD was out for most of the year and Russ literally broke his face midway through the year which derailed their season. In 2018, Andre Roberson, their best perimeter defender (who would’ve guarded Donovan Mitchell) suffered a career ending injury. In 2020, Russ tore his hamstring and he didn’t move the same once the rockets were in the bubble. Let’s not act like Westbrook has had these perfect situations.

we gotta distinguish being a “better player” and a “more valuable piece”. i think jrue is better in his role than alot of guys is; however, saying jrue is a better player is nuts to me considering what some of these guys bring to teams.
Holiday was the main reason why the bucks couldn’t beat the Celtics because he was so ass offensively but he doesn’t get any blame because he’s not the man. That’s why he’s not a top 20 guard this era because if his team loses he’ll never get blamed because he’s not the man. For instance if Luka and Kyrie fry the Celtics and win in 7 games Holiday will not get any blame they laying the blame at the feet of Tatum and Brown. I watched Jimmy fry him all series he gets no blame all the blame goes to Giannis for losing.
When the Lowry and demar raptors used to lose again and again to Lebron. They both got flamed. Contrast that to when the pelicans got flamed by the warriors and NOBODY. Impact on winning being the 3rd option is way different from being the #1 guy when teams not dialing up to stop you yall gotta chilllllllll
it depends on the context of the team, if your team has decent scoring options like milwaukee or boston, jrue is not as ball dominant as players like dame or russ, and can glue those teams together better with his iq which is underrated and his playmaking as long as his size and defense.
dame and russ need an ideal scenario to perform really good, jrue is more versatile and can blend in and impact any contender/playoff team immensly right now!
Russ and dame are good at rising bad teams in a self centered type offense (which jrue cant do as good as them obviously) but if a playoff team has already some playmaking and scoring, jrue will impact them quicker without having to change your personnel as much in contrast to adding dame or russ.
i have to ask the question the lakers that traded for russ and signed all them old geezers, who would ve impacted that team more?
who is taking longer to adapt to playing with giannis and milwaukee bucks?

I think the major disconnect in these discussions is that we need to categorize players correctly so that we can compare them reasonably to one another because there’s a difference between being a the lead guy on a team and being the focus of defenses vs being a cog or glue guy. Me personally I rate Jrue along with guys like Derrick White and Terry Rozier who are more than just role players but not quite stars but at times they can perform like or have the impact of some stars.

Jrue is NOT a better player than Westbrook, individually. On a team with low end talent, Russ can take you to higher heights.
But on a team with a good amount of talent, I will take Jrue over Russ any day. To me, Westbrooks playstyle and lack of self awareness serves as an inhibition to the teams maximum capabilities.
If you really think about it, there is no reason why Russ isn't equal the defender that Jrue is. Damn near same age, height, weight, both strong for their position, and Russ has more athletic talent. Jrue is the blue collar worker doing much of the dirty work for a team.
Russ feigns being blue collar but has white collar tendencies. In a league where the best players are generally white collar, every team needs the blue collar players, or they will get bullied.
Saying tracy mcgrady like he did sm when we all know the 2000s was an era with 0 spacing and better defense, also the only reason t mac never made it out of the first as a number 1 was because injuries and lack of supporting cast, don’t forget he was up 3-1 against bad boy pistons before they started triple teamed him
I think Jrue fits in with 09 Billups, 08-11 Kidd and 19 Lowry. These guys do all the little things on both ends that help you win without having to dominate the ball and look to score or assist on every position.
It's proven that ball dominant guards like Paul, Dame, Wall and Russ cannot win a championship as a first option so I would rather have Jrue as second option than Dame as a first option if that makes any sense

Nobody is denying offensive proficiency. Everyone know Russ and Dame offensively are better than Jrue. However, Jrue impact on the concept of winning and his intangibles makes him better. Jrue defense is evident to be more impactful than Russ offensive dexterity. That's the inevitable. Same concept I have for Rondo>Dame, Russ etc
