  • This is a rough example of using HVAC tape to move a platter that has Spacers in the drive. Its rough, not in a cleanroom, but used as a demo for people to learn the basic process they need to go practice and develop. It gets the job done cheap but takes some practice to accomplish without damage.

I'm having a heck of time finding a donor drive to swap out a bad motor. On my 2015 black 4 TB WD, it doesn't look like I can swap out only the motor. It looks like i have to swap the motor with the case- which means that I have to find a donor with the right DCM code, correct?

its necessary for platter alignment. if u pull just without marking platters then ur platters will be mis aligned & hdd will never detect until proper aligned

Around 16 years ago, my friend gave me his hard drive because it would not read on his computer. I tried every software fix I could find but nothing would get it to read. I told him the bad news. Then over the years I tried a few more times, still would not read. Then around 5 years ago, using Windows 10 and Recova, my computer was finally able to read the data. However, the drive was full of viruses. I had to move the data to a file and then repeatedly ran Windows Defender to scan and remove more and more viruses. Then I was able to view the photos in the file and move them to a thumb drive. Then I had to reinstall Windows because the viruses had infected it and it would not run correctly. Now it is fine. So, if the drive spins but does not read, it could be virus infected. Don't recover data using your main computer. You should have a dedicated computer for this purpose. You could end up with Ransomware on your computer.

Does the other drive that u are swapping have to be exact model drive ...can u put any pkatter on any drive?..if not what are the requirenents?

If you are going through all this work for data recovery, you do not want to gamble by using some other model hard drive.

Is it fine if two plates touch each other ?

they don't, there is a spacer in there.

Hi Scott, I also think, that no drive without servo is going to survive this procedure. Why are you flipping the drive over?? It's pointless. Why aren't you just put two stripes of the tape onto the side, just like you did it on one side, and just pull it up and put it straight onto the donor drive.
I think, that this is the way, everybody do it.

Well that is one way to go, either works fine. However i can tell you this process has worked every time.

try this with 3 or 4 platters, this strategy is completely wrong.

On his previous videos he does show his normal tool set, which includes an extractor for platters.

This will work with 4 platters. However, I am teaching how to do this without special tools in this video. I have other tools for more complicated recovery.
