  • By no means am I showing anyone or even myself how to do HDD platter swapping. If you're HDD is borked there are real places for such things.
    But do enjoy!

    I'm glad this is only a single platter, and not a dual platter.
    You should still hit it with can air even if you don't see dust. Also, the felt piece is the internal filter, which I see you left out.

    • @Appri
      @Appri 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Canned air is 100% good, but the internal filter seems not neccessary if he's immediately cloning the data out.

    I did this today with a WD3200BPVT 320GB 2.5" HDD. Had the same model laying around (very lucky) and followed as above. Spins up OK and diskpart/easeus can see it. Attempting recovery as I write this, however its now reading it as a 2TB HDD! Not overly hopeful but we shall see!

    there are protection diodes at the entrance to many boards, called tvs, you can measure them with multimeter to see if they shorted if the pcb was over volted.

    Yeah, I didn't think the board swap would work. I tried that myself and _then_ read that firmware adapts itself to unique flaws in the platters and heads. So I don't even know how a platter swap would work, but eventually I'll save up the money to send that drive in for pro. recovery. I'm just glad my data on that relatively small drive isn't time-sensitive!

      when swap the boards You need also to desolder the original bios chip and solder it on the new donor pcb.Also plates can be moved but it depends from the person who will do the work.Of course if the plates are not damaged...

    Hi, I have the same problem. I'm getting ready to attempt this in a last ditch effort as I'm not willing to pay 2000 to have a recovery center do it. I have one question. First thank you for making this video, the only unclear thing to me was the PCB board. I know you swapped it and then reswapped it so I'm not sure which one to use? Can you tell me if you use the original one on the bad hard drive, or the new one that comes with the donor drive? I'm assuming the new one but not sure. The computer place told me the donor drive is in good shape and reading correctly, so all i'm trying to do is get the info off my old platter. If you could please clarify this I'm planning to start asap, thanks so much!

    firmware between 2 drives that holds drive info, sector layout, head info. may be slightly different between the 2 drives, which when put on the incorrect drive would make it not able to become ready or make it click. You would then need to do a ROM swap on the PCB (its not easy). But using the PCB that was coded for that drive made it work.You are lucky. If that had 2 platters, and you got the alignment off in any way, you could kiss the data goobye. But it seemed like it worked for you. HDDs are such fragile things.

    • @NelsonBigGunP200Fan

      @@timberland215 head swap could work if the heads were failing, but if the motor has locked up or other issues have popped up then no, it won't work. Firmware plays a big part in making a drive work properly.

    the board swap will not work . Unfortunately the original board or any board for that matter have one chip that has the map of where the data is on the disk , where to start and where it finish on the disk. The new board do not have the right info on that chip and that means the drive will spin but nothing will append. the new board has no idea or where the data is on the disk.

    • @BadgerLaser
      @BadgerLaser 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily true - as an experiment i've just done it with 2.5"" samsung drives hn-m500 ( yes they are the same revision etc ) and i can confirm absolutely that the PCB from one drive operates the other no problemo, access 100%
      This in turn confirmed that it is a mechanical problem with my 'dead' drive.
      There is certainly no harm in trying the board swap to rule out the a simple and low risk bit of fault finding before opening the cases. and very simple to put back to square one again. Of course this might not be the case for all drive types since some might use a more sophisticated control system like you describe.

    There is a "chip" (poor words, im sorry about my english doritos skillz) that every pcb must get changed. If you want to fix an HDD with a "donor" printer circuit board (PCB, the green "brain") you must change a piece that we call "the spider chip" that contains important unique information and instruciont that make possible the functioning. If you do not try that there is a really really really small possibility it works, like 0,0001 to 100000000 possibilities xD . The thing might look like working but would not be recognized by the PC or would not work propperly. If you change the spider chip it will probably work, unless it is the goddamn "click of death". In that case you should swap the platters with an identical donor drive. The swap is nothing easy. the "discs" or platters are those , lets say, mirror discs , that you find inside an HDD, those fuckers gotta be treated with white gloves ^^

      If it's only temporary which it should be the filter isn't needed.

    Wow.... As a data recovery professional, that was painful to watch. You were incredibly lucky that this process worked for you. There are a thousand things that could have gone wrong and this video will hurt more people than it will help. So many people will lose their data forever due to this video and others like it.
    Almost every single day, we receive a hard drive in our lab that has been opened by some do it yourselfer trying to save a few dollars and recover their data themselves. Most of the time these cases turn out to be unrecoverable because they screwed it up so badly.
    People need to understand the risk and consequence of opening their hard drive themselves. They need to understand that data recovery labs charge several hundred dollars more to recover a hard drive that has been previously opened than one that has not.
    On average an individual home user with a 1TB or smaller hard drive will pay less than $1000 to recover all their data from www.filesaversdatarecovery.com and around $1500 if the drive has been opened first. You also need know that less than 50% of the previously opened HDD's can be recovered VS 90% recovery rate for drives that have not been previously opened. The 10% that can't recovered is related significant platter damage caused by damaged heads scratching the surface of the platter right off, sometimes leaving thick black dust all over the inside of the drive when we open them.
    People need to know that most hard drives do not only have one platter. Most have two or more platters making this process even more complicated. The platters absolutely can't be separated or even shifted from one another or your data will be gone forever.
    2nd, there are many firmware related problems that are a major problem that show their ugly face after a procedure like this and then you have a whole new problem that can only be dealt with using very high end and expensive equipment and years of specialized training.
    It is highly discouraged to attempt to open and or recover data from a failed hard drive yourself and in my opinion, it is this guys responsibility to help you people understand that.

      This was mainly a challenge for myself, by no means did I expect success of any sort.
      I'm not at all encouraging others to pop open their platter drives, in both the title and the description I try to make it clear that this is not at all how to do it. In comments asking me questions about their troubled drives, I just tell them to send it to a pro. The family members drive I was fussing with didn't even really hold that much on it as the majority of their things were on a cloud drive anyway, even told them that the likelihood of this working was 0.001%.
      This video is just me tinkering with things by coming up with an assumption and then trying it out. I've taken things apart and put them back together ever sense I was a kid, learned a whole lot from stuff like that.
      No I don't encourage this sort of thing as most people are looking for a cheap fix for a complicated problem and often times people hate computers because they cheap out on something and don't understand why it's not working properly.

      $1000!!!! Holy crap! No wonder data recovery companies troll youtube. Don't want people not spending that kind of money. I don't think I'll ever need my information recovered at that cost.

      I've tried this method as well as moving a stuck head from the platter multiple times with success. I usually save my users thousands of dollars doing it this way. You just have to know what you're doing.

      Lockdonnen Don't worry... it seems like the OP above feels threatened that users will start recovering their own data thus losing thousands of dollars a month.
