Ben. Here’s an idea. Give each maples skunk a colour and then as I hits the body make it look like if floods out like 3 rivers hitting a delta. On the front it would mirror the back like it over flows like a waterfall from back to front

One thing that popped into my head when I seen the gold metallic stain was, what if, you where to have the black stain like you are planning to, but in some spots not to often have some of the gold highlighting the grain some more and then have your other stains over that, might give a star like effect or might not work at all

  • @Craftlngo

I think you should cut the very tip of the front and back on the lower horn to match the crevass/gap in the wood and make it look like that whole region has sort of naturally eroded?

First of all, happy wedding anniversary, our 15th was last week so here's to 15 more at least for you guys.
Second, I'm biased but I love the green* over that burl, it's very reptile looking and if you ever feel like exploring that theme you would probably have a winner on your hands (as long as you don't call it Anaconda, that's already taken ;)) * (yellow + phtalo blue mix as opposed to straight green)
Third, for that belly cut you won't do anyway, I thought a crescent moon design on that side with the nebula look in the background might look cool. Either with binding, silver leaf or something else, but then you're probably right that the guitar is already complex enough as it is.
Fourth, regarding the coffee / beard oil logo, my preference goes for the 2nd one but either way that's quite reminiscent of Nick Zametti's logo. What about using part of your head tattoo design for this?
No fifth I think, really enjoying the build, just please don't change your mind too often or half the audience playing drinking games when you do that won't survive the end of the month ;)

this wood is so beautiful that it don't need anything else, but the clear colors like the red and the green pops the details of this wood without to turn off this details...
i'm interested to see it with just the red (why not a red color gradient) and a glassy finish to pop all even more 😉 this wood probably deserve so many colors that it's hard to decide which one 😋

Ben, you have nothing to worry about. Your designs and the way you build ar unique to you as far as I've seen. As I'm watching you create those wonderful instruments I find myself designing one of my own hopefully as unique as those you do regularly. the one I have in my head now is similar to the relish guitar in that it has an aluminum frame with acrylic covers but the neck also has aluminum struts as a base with acrylic covering and a wood fingerboard with stainless frets the typw of wood for the fingerboard doesn't matter as it will be either painted or stained. Or even perhaps cloth covered like a builder we both know.. think a triple-neck built last year...lol yep those guys... in fact my current guitar project is getting a cloth cover finish body and head stock with clear coat..as well as eletronics and hardware upgrades and body and pick guard mods to accommodate those added controls (3 humbuckers with vol and tone for each and coil split. more tricks there too maybe even led's for lighting accents (hint: I'm using clear acrylic sheet for the pick guard an covering it to match the body) for the design in the cloth print I'm using to cover the body the led lights will show through the clear and fabric to enhance the design..nebula print spandex blend all way stretch will conform to the body shape of the guitar..I just need to blend it along the edges of the body feather the paint and add a few spwckles to hide the seam ..Oh yes I've tried to think of everything..maybe I'll miss a thing or two this go-round as it is my very first attempt but I usually get things right the first try if I do my homework. and as a mechanic and adept at woodworking already. I think I have a good chance of doing a good job on this I don't plan on a real start till i get all the parts and materials I need to complete the build.. I'v learned that having all the parts makes it easier to conplete a job once started. missing a part or needed material delays the project in unexpected ways making the finish unknown...to me that is unacceptable at the very least and frustrating at best...the only thing I have done to date is a partial wiring fo the pickups and controls on a prototype extended pick guard getting the pots and switches in approximately the final layout and trying to finalize the spacing and positioning for comfort and usability. a bit of tweaking may be needed to get just right.. as you well know. Good planning is a great start but only goes so far. there's always the small details that take time to sort out..Here I go again motor mouth as always.. even in person and usually worse face to face...i'll and it here and continue later maybe,,lol

Some of your watchers are actually older (1963) and still enjoy this build massively. You could always become a dentist how you handled the dremel-tool. I am still very curious how this will end ... for sure one of a kind. Yes go for the beveled arm-rest. (it will extend the series :-)), use a contrasting wood, so a quite solid block as it will look great and will make the instrument more natural to play on. And with respect to the staining ..... don't overdo it, this is an instrument with probably one the the nicest burl maple pieces, make sure you show that. I hate guitars that are sprayed with a closing lacquer as underneath there could be MDF. (I am not saying you do that, but as the other end of the spectrum). A nice guitar shows the wood, the whole wood and nothing but the wood s-h-m-g. Fantastic series.

Hi Ben, enjoyed this episode. I don't think you need accentuate the grain, putting a base coat of black will do the job nicely. I do think that once you've done the final staining of all the colours you should do an edge bevel of maybe 2-3mm on both front and back and lay gold leaf on the bevel before putting on the high gloss topcoat.

@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Since watching this video, I've gone and looked it up. Seems there are luthiers out there who are retro-installing these kind of cutaways into acoustics to order.
my mind is blown by it. I'd have thought it would have required a completely different approach to bracing inside.
having said that, I tend to work with CF a lot for hollow bodies, so I'm far from an expert when it comes to wood acoustics.

You were saying about the inclusions on the wood surface being an issue with ultra gloss… you could combine that problem with your idea about the gold leaf and do a metallic gold primer/putty to fill in the inclusions like the Japanese art of kintsugi? Gets around the issue of absorption of stain too, and pays homage to the wood being beautiful and those ‘imperfections’ not being something to hide.

I think you have a natural inclination to figure out what's cool!

For the burl & grain filler: Titanium white. Once you lay down the nebula colors the white will poke through as stars!

Ben, I think the metallic fills have their place but they should be subtle for this build. It’s the burr pattern that’s the star here and you don’t want to distract from it. That being said, however, those metallics could be used for a few strategically placed starbursts through the nebula pattern. You could wait until a sealer coat is applied to determine if any spots need a bit of highlight. Until you start building clear coats you won’t really know how those overlapping stains will interact with each other.

I think the gold looks quite cool, in a sort of Kanji way. I don't think I'd put it all over, but it could look amazing in just one spot, like a signature.
Also I thought the initial green looked fantastic after it was sanded back a bit. I totally get that it may or may not be the right colour for the nebula, but that would look amazing as a top on another beast.
Loving your work as always, Ben!

    Just a though-
Copper leaf the walls of the "holes". It could lend a bit cosmic flare without being too obvious.

I use the phrase, "catch you on the flipside," as well, because I believe it is cool. Though I do use it sparingly! Normally in the lead up to some event or public holiday which will interrupt me from seeing that person again until it has passed. But that's just me.

hi, hope you are well, as a suggestion, if you already left a natural wood (Birdseye), channel bound neck, give it a proper back and top, natural wood (Birdseye) binding, instead of any bevel that could weaken a delicate wood and structural joint, take care.

In the words of Edmund Blackadder, we are not at home to Mister Cockup. :) Seriously, though, I love your work and the passion that you bring to your builds. Also, if you doubt whether it's too boring for us to watch you sanding or not, check out Baumgartner Restoration. We literally spend minutes at a time watching paintings being cleaned and various bits of frames and stretchers being cleaned, repaired, or re-engineered. There is nothing wrong with some meditative viewing of someone sanding a guitar.
