    My father was a Master Shipwright Boatbuilder with over 50 years in the trade when he retired. He had a saying (Politically incorrect as it would be today) that "Women and fools should never see a job half done." Meaning basically, Some people are incapable of envisioning the end result of a process.
    This dye/filler/finishing process is exactly such a job. 110% confidence in your vision and capability here Ben.

      You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. I almost cried at several stages (the initial black, even after sanding back etc - ruined that sumptuous burl), I cheered at others (the colours lit up when applying the wet gold). We just have to trust the process and that it will all come together in the end. The lacquer will light it up and give a vivid wet look gloss to the colours. Maybe lol.

    • @danstiverson
      @danstiverson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The question about adding stain is, will it enhance the look of the wood or is the wood so bad that it should be painted? Neither apply in this case. He should have used cardboard if he was going to do this to it. What a shame.

    True art is not like a coloring book: blocks of individual colors laid out in two dimensions. Layers and layers of colors and textures must be added, mostly stripped back, and slowly built up over time. Most of the layers look bizarre on their own, but eventually reveal a final thing so stunning people will put it in a museum one day. Nebula 2.0 is one such thing.

      me too! I stopped watching on my phone, went to another video just to check my phone hadn't suddenly broken.. it went quiet just after an advert too to compound the problem. Next time we leave need to boost the volume of the ambient stuff for sure. B

    your comments on staining wood/glue fills got me thinking.... what about staining sawdust , then mixing it with glue to use as a filler? you could use a matching or contrasting color. might be worth an experiment.

    Two eggs over easy, Scrapple, a cup of coffee, and Nebula 2.0. A great way to start the day.
    One of my irrational fears is staining like this - the fear of screwing up all of the work that is put in at that point. Ben, amazing work, as always.
    Cheers!

    Looks simply stunning... can’t wait to see the finish beneath the gold filler revealed! Those Crimson finishing products are amazing... PLEASE set up some sort of Canadian order fulfilment centre so I can get some without the shipping doubling my cost! 😁

    Nebula is going to be a very special guitar and I am so envious of your client however, I still get the circles on the neck. I'm sure it will make sense on completion. I can relate to the rosewood painted black crazyness. Back in early 2000's the manufacturer of bespoke furniture manufacturerI worked for was approached by the architect for a well known Library in London to produce hundreds of shelving units to be made using Rosewood veneer an then having spent 11 weeks carefully choosing the best veneer match for each unit then an email arrived from the client asking for them all to be painted all matt black, go figure. Stay safe J.

    One day make a gold guitar but for the love of the father above let the beautiful burl show through as it should. I turn wood burls of all sorts and they are beautiful when done right and I hope this one your working on comes out amazing

    Anyone else think Ben should put gold pearl in the final clear coat?!?! I love the way that looks with the translucent gold after he wipes the grain filler!!

    I kinda dig that gold finish. Maybe sand through in a few spots exposing more of the galaxy stain...

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On any other build, that would be a very interesting finish.. not this time though.. it is firmly lodged in my brain though! B

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    burl maple itself is usually quite dark, so it's difficult to get vibrant colors when staining it. I guess Ben will sand quite a lot of it back in the end?

  • @koens3950

    This is going to be such an amazing guitar. I'm curious to see the nebula reappear from underneath that gold wash, although this looks interesting too. What is bothering me a bit is the large hole at the top of the body. Two sides have this gorgeous natural end of the burl wood. The other edges are too straight and clean. I think it might look better if you would carve out these edges so that they would follow the natural grains of the wood. Just a suggestion.
