Car Wizard (and Hoovie though he wasn't in the dust as much): That glassy-looking fiber looks more like fiberglass than carbon fiber, but then again I just realized I don't know what carbon fiber looks like when you saw through it. Interesting trivia: Your lungs CANNOT clear carbon dust. Once it's in there, it's there for life. The lungs can detect it and keep trying to clear it, and over the years those constant reactions cause more and more scarring to build up in the lungs. It keeps getting worse until you can't breathe. The reason I know is because my grandfather had black lung disease from working in a coal mine and I looked it up to see what it is. Interesting anecdote: A guy who worked in a body shop told me it's very rare to see a body worker over 50 don't make it much past the age of 50 because many of them don't use masks when they paint, which is even worse than working in a coal mine--lots worse--and they tend to die before they get far into their 50s. I do not have any medical backing or scientific evidence for this, it's just something a guy who worked in a body shop said to me, but for all I know it could be true. Ok, look. I'll just man up and say it. I'm worried about your health so when you're doing something that produces dust I'd really like it better if you wore a mask when doing dusty work. You might not think breathing is your favorite thing to do but you'll sure well know it is if you can't (may that never happen.)

More importantly they really need to seal those cuts in the carbon fiber; with the composite exposed it will wick up moisture, which will lead to delamination of the composite.

It's not really shocking, remember that there was a plate covering those things so not an obvious failure without removing it. I mean sure they should have figured out what sort of things might need to be inspected but I would argue that it was something on the level of checking the planetary gears in your standard auto transmission. Plus they might have assumed that the place they got it from checked it out and knew it was a working transmission. Heck maybe they were even told it was.

@@vtr0104 that wouldn't be wise, since at least one gear lost a couple of teeth, that means that there was loose metal shards banging around the whole transmission wich in turn probably damaged or stressed a lot of other fast moving metal components.

@@transtubular Politely disagree. If you're doing big work, you check variables. Especially considering it exhibited previous damage and only required a few screws to examine.
I guess Wizard typically deals with new/OEM replacements, so not something he deals with very often. I feel for the guy.

I thought drilling the holes to access the parts was a brilliant idea. I’d have done the same Hoovie.

YEP!! Both the Car Wizard and Hoovie know the deal. Smart mechanics that think together vs follow-the-book mechanics can come out ahead if the 'thinking' is valid.

Kenneth Hicks or the heat/air conditioner blend door on mid to late 90s and up Ford Rangers and Explorers. I cut a hole in the plastic HVAC box so I could reach in and change the position of the door that would change it from heat to A/C. 10 minutes and $0 in parts. Put some foil or duct tape over it and you’re good to go.
