My FBS is 126.6 mg/dl and Fasting Insulin is 8.7 uu/ml(ECLIA method). It means HOMA IR Goes to 2.72. What could be the reason of high blood sugar? still insulin is not so high.
I observed my brother in hospital over several days, the nurse taking blood sugar from the patients was saying "that's fine" with his readings being in the range of 8.9, 9.5, 8.5 etc. Clearly pre-diabetic - but is long as you weren't about to drop dead from a diabetic coma - "that's fine" according to the NHS - and then they serve you another plastic tray of carb laden crap followed by jelly and custard for afters. Unbelievable neglect.
NHS definitely needs to review their menus - as far as those who care what they're eating are concerned. However, most people don't care, gulp down what they're given, and add insult to injury by ordering in smelly fast food.
And why was your brother hospitalized for several days? 8.5-9.5 mmol/l equals 150-170 mg/dL, it is definitely pre-diabetic for after-meal, but a lot of people are still going around with 200-300 mg/dL (11-16 mmol/l) without realizing they are diabetics

Has it been hard to adjust for what's supposed to be good for you? The older food pyramid suggested much more carbs and eggs were an immediate death sentence (almost). Now things have come around 180°. Do you still see doctors who just about faint if they hear that their patient is eating more than 2 eggs a day?
Sadly I hardly tell them anything. I get my blood work results listen nod pay my bill n leave. They r like automated robots repeating a script as bad as car sales ppl. Last few years anyway. All about $$ and lots of prevention tests and referrals too. Nothing is wrong but you have to be tested to prove everything is OK even if you are fine.

@@daydreameravaniMy peak weight was about four years ago, and I began a stringent adherence to keto and cleaner eating in spring of 2020 because of the hysteria of the time. I have been stable at about 140 +/- 8-10 pounds since early 2022. This is not easy. Starting fasting was brutal, getting used to OMAD was slow and I constantly self-sabotaged it. I also "knew" I was in ketosis with certain levels of total and net carbs, "knew" certain foods weren't triggers, and "knew" I could reset from a holiday/stress processed food slip in under 24 hours - and all of this was false. I needed to begin weighing food, counting absolutely everything, and measuring my blood to know what was actually up with my metabolic processes. And it has to be clean - real, whole food. Commercial "keto" products are almost universally trash, about the most processed thing I eat today is the Egglife wraps. You MUST totally eliminate seed oils and track your omega-6 and omega-3 intake. On days I eat, my OMAD regimen generally includes 1-2 cans of mackerel or sardines, 3-4 high quality pasture eggs, and raw cheese made with grass-fed/grass-finished cow's milk. My omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is almost always under 1, but crucially my overall intake of omega-6 is 5% or less of my energy intake.

@@jswalk4 I'm in the US, and no one in my medical care pipeline will pay for a fatty acids test, and I'm not sure my primary care physician can even order one if I asked to pay for it out of pocket. I am going to advocate for an advanced lipids test, but I doubt they will even want to test my HbA1c because I'm a 145 pound 6'4 man under 40. So I am instead relying on nutritional information from food, which is not 100% accurate but it's the best I can do. I get all my omega-3 from fish, eggs, and grass-fed dairy products. Even assuming a 15% minus variation in the omega-3 content of Atlantic mackerel, pasture eggs, and grass-fed raw aged cheese, based on my dietary logging I should have a ratio under 1. That is, more omega-3 than omega-6.
Thank you Dr. Ekberg for all you videos. April this year, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with 355 blood glucose and the Dr. Put in 105unit insulin per day, which really felt terrible everyday. Then I saw your videos and started watching it. After 2months of insulin I decided to follow your videos. Today, I am celebrating because its my 57days of LowCarb and intermittent fasting and I already lose 10kilos of weight. My blood glucose is still stubborn and getting 120-130mg/dl in the morning but getting there. Can't thank you enough for all your knowledge.
@@shakengrain1942 I feel so good that I don''t crave any thing. Man made foods don't register as food for me any more. I don't cheat, so my brain does not remember dopamine to crave stuff. I love my diet, imagine eating stakes, and high fat animal foods every day. I mostly eat raw meat. this causes dopamine detox and you don't crave man made foods. Raw eggs, raw meat, cooked high fat bone/meat broth, lots of butter. 200grams of saturated fat per day minimum. I am 155lbs. I get some glucose from dairy. It is a life style that I love. Carnivore saved my life. Zero depression, great sleep, feeling strong and light in stomach, functioning gut.....ets. Eating raw, you eat much less, but have more energy and feeling lighter, stronger, sharper.

@@krakraichbindamy Mother has been Type 1 Diabetic all my life (64 years) and our family has always recognised both Type 1 & Type 2 not as a “disease” per se (although it is a dis-ease) but rather simply a “condition” that the body has adapted to. Remission implies it will most likely return and not improve.
@@vitalishus Well, T1D is an another story to T2D. If you've had T2D it still may return. Even you never had it, you still may get if your life style allows it - see children/teens with T2D. There is no improvement in any case. Another question: is our standard western life style appropriate for digestive system? If not, the illness is only matter of time.
@@krakraichbinda of course they are different. That was not my point. Myself personally, I will never get Type 1 or Type 2. I have made sure of that. Keto lifestyle for 10 years and now am carnivore. All bloods are perfect. True that as long as a certain lifestyle (SAD) is adhered to Type 2 is potentially inevitable (not always though) as is Type 1 if there is a genetic component present. Otherwise you can definitely prevent either happening to you without a doubt. The same goes for ANY disease or condition. The trick is finding what really works for the individual.
When I watch your recent videos like this one which goes deeper into "how" the body works to handle the various foods we eat, and the problems caused by eating too much of some things, I am saddened that no one emphasized this when I was younger. I am now 79 years old and my bad eating habits all through my life have already done a lot of damage. Every young person should be taught these things so they can remain healthy throughout their life. How can I help you spread this essential knowledge to the younger generation?
@IslamIsTheSolution98Knowledge is power. Absolutely right about that. In every aspect of life. I'm 41 now, but when I was young, I had no real knowledge of anything. No one taught me how to live. No one cared or they didn't know anything themselves to teach me. American schools are trash. Goberment don't care about us. There is no one to teach us anything and show us the way. It's intended to keep us all in the dark, which is why the country (and the world) are in shambles.
I just went for my first annual physical after starting keto two months ago, last week. My doc was very pleased with my progress and he was completely sold on the keto lifestyle. We were completing each others’ sentences! This is the same doc who just told me to exercise more when I asked him for a diet plan a couple years ago…. His response was that if he told people to get into keto, they would just eat high fat things along with lots of carbs. Then he’d get blamed, basically. What a shame because people are suffering and dying needlessly!!

Dr Sten- Thank you sir!!! The way you explain this rather complicated concept is amazing. This filled in a lot of blanks for me. Medical knowledge is no longer exclusive to physicians and healthcare professionals thanks to people like Dr Sten who are changing the lives of so many. Myself included.
Just so you are aware, this is not medical knowledge. There is some basic chemistry and nutritional information most of which is learned in secondary school. Dr. Sten does a great job of explaining this in the context of diabetes.
For thousands of years people have eaten grains. However, they worked hard to plant them and harvest them and grind them and knead them to make bread which was always whole grain, never anything artificial. GMO’s and pesticides were non existent. Even back in the 50’s and 60’s people were eating carbs and were normal weight but now everything is processed. I ate potatoes at dinner most nights but portion size was small. We had a protein, a starch, and a non starchy vegetable. We were thin. No snacking. An apple for a snack maybe.

Another day could have been a big bag of fried chips, fried in canola oil, I would lie to whoever about my addiction. I now tell people to be able to overcome your addiction you first have to be able to admit your addiction.
What an amazing video, explained so thoroughly 😊 you are a doctor legend. My whole family suffers with T2DM, including my younger sister (36 yo). Myself, I was never diagnosed with it but I used to crave carbs, suffered with autoimmune disease, acne, frequent viral infections and bowel issues. I started eating clean 10 years ago, currently I have no signs or symptoms of my previous conditions. When I talk to my family about clean eating, less carbs and good fats they become so protective of their diet and lifestyle, not willing to change anything about it…. So sad. Yeah. I have a mom and brother who are in bad shape and on all kinds of medications. I tried telling them years ago about their diet and exercise, but to no avail. It is sad. If only they wouldn't be so stubborn, they wouldn't suffer as they are now. Then again, most people's will power is set 0 and the excuses come in like stink bugs before winter....

Thanks for the excellent videos you've made. Was pre-diabetic for years (5.7) , probably a couple of decades. After following your teachings I decided to live a low carbohydrate life and use daily intermittent fasting. For the past 2 years my A1C and body weight have both returned to "normal" ranges. I also completely stopped drinking alcohol, but found eliminating sugar has been much more difficult. A small treat, every once in a while, seems to work.
Dr. Sten, another excellent IR video. You've covered this so well before but keep adding tidbits that makes your channel "continuing education". The graph of carbs from grain, fruit and non-starchy veggies was great. I haven't seen that before. Please keep adding to and massaging topics you've covered before. I continue to be shocked that my clinical colleagues don’t measure fasting insulin levels. It’s not only the best predictor of future diabetes but 6.7x greater at predicting heart disease compared to cholesterol & LDL.
I continue to be shocked that I'd rather go to TH-cam than someone in the traditional medical system. I developed a severe asthmatic response to histamine having to choose between eating (anything at all) and breathing. I discovered my problem when I started fasting to fix my immune system and put together that I only had symptoms after I ate anything. Great. Now what, I thought. There was a day I'd have run to the doctor immediately. Instead I came here to Dr. Ekberg (along with Drs. DiNezza, Rajsree, Hyman, and Pelz) and learned how to heal my immune system by fasting and with my food choices. I avoided high histamine food and followed an "extreme" fasting regimen (80% OMAD, 20% 2MAD, one 3-day fast per month) for 5 months. And I'm healed, now, 6 months after self-diagnosing and fixing my problem. I still live a fasting lifestyle and eat an ominvorous, clean diet and I intend to do so for the rest of my life. I'm filled with shalom and my body and mind are in tip-top shape. I'm 51, 5'2" female, and not only healed a severe histamine problem but lost 26 lbs to be settled in at about 103 lbs. What do you think my outcome would have been had I run to a doctor? Steroids? Albuterol? A pat on the head being told I'm imagining things? I didn't want to find out. Now, _that_ is shocking.
@@joycewright5386I think they don't know how to interpret the findings and to prideful, to embarrassed to acknowledge it. Also I believe, I could be wrong, the ADA (American Diabetes Association) frowns upon testing it. My insurance will pay for an annual C-peptide test.

Around 18 years ago, when I lived in the USA, I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic. This was following massive blood sugar drops and what I initially thought were minor seizures. The doctor told me that it was just a matter of time before becoming diabetic. Jump ahead, 4-5 years from that point into the future, and I'm living in South Korea. I was still experiencing some blood sugar problems, so I went to a local doctor. After running some tests, I was informed that enzymes were leaking from my liver. I was prescribed some medication. I took it, and 3-4 days later, I felt fine (although I took the medicine for a couple of weeks). I haven't had blood sugar drops (or what felt like blood sugar drops) ever since that time. I'm not a doctor, but based on my experience, I think diabetes, for some, can be badly misdiagnosed. It was for me.
You're an outlier. I know people like this. One of those people is a member of my family. He is reaching 60 years old can eat what he wants mainly carb heavy meals like chips, doesn't touch fruit at all, never exercises, drinks like a fish down the pub with his mates after he finishes his job. No health conditions whatsoever. He has tons of energy as well. Rarely gets colds or flu. The rest of us in our family are the opposite and have to watch we eat and make sure we exercise. He and two others are the only people in our family who are not diabetic and can eat what they want. It's so unfair.

IR is a lot more prevalent than people think. We had blood tests at our work place (obligatory by law) and nearly all people had high blood sugar levels despite fasting 15 hours before the test. It's truly horrible

@drekberg Thank you for your amazing videos. I recently started watching your videos, due to being diagnosed with T2D. With HbA1c of 12.9%. My dr put me on 1000mg Glucophage XR for starters (2 weeks) and will probably increase it next Wednesday when I go for my follow up. I hate tablets, never been on meds ever. I also do 16 - 24 hours fasting every 2nd day. Am I on the right track. Thank you once again for helping many people change their lives to live healthy lifestyles. You need to cut all carbs not coming from green leafy vegetables period and you need to fast for as long as it takes for your blood sugar to go down. You will have to last long enough to dump the glycogen stored in your muscles and glucogen for your sugar levels to go down. And even then, you need to be very, very careful with protein. Eat only enough for your lean mass. Like, 0.8g/lb of lean muscle mass and if you notice it causing your sugar to creep, cut back and add fats. You may need a genuine ketogenic diet based upon macros to get control of this.
My last test, insulin was 3.3, c peptide minimal range, fasting glucose 100. So you would say insulin sensitive. But I have a problem. When I go through an emotional shock, my glucose would go higher than normal and will stay there for much longer. So it's more than diet causing problems.

I was at 15 insulin and glucose of 100. I'm on day 20 of a 27 day fast. I will check again after 2 weeks of clean eating. NOTE: Dr wouldn't get me a insulin test. Used online "Walk in labs" to schedule it.

Thank you. I am a twin and we're turning 50 in August and neither of us are diabetic but I swim all year round but am still 20 pounds over weight.. I started fasting and cutting out sugars. She went to her doctor and got that needle apparently it helps you lose weight but is for people with diabetes.. I would like any extra advice to show my bossy twin that natural is the way to go and help me lose my 20 pounds. I've lost 3 so far I'm about 11 days of fasting 12/12. Thank you.
I had followed the Gundry diet for about a month and was absolutely astounded by how the fat melted away and I wasn’t hungry. I went from being able to pinch a couple inches to no fat around my belly. I felt great and had a lot of energy. Unfortunately I fell off the wagon and I’m back to eating ice cream and carbs again when I’m stressed. But I do know that it’s quite possible to lose weight on a good diet and with the elimination of some of the high lectin foods it really does help your digestion. Your bowel movements become healthy too, and that’s a big indicator of your gut health. If you don’t have to use toilet paper after a bowel movement, and there is no obnoxious odor, then your diet is just right!
Love your videos and explanations provided in them. I have heard you explain it further before, just not this one. The cells are resisting the affect of insulin because they replete with energy and will not let anymore in until what’s inside is metabolized to make room for additional energy. I believe many people just don’t understand they are over supplying energy and usually not providing enough micronutrients.

Speaking with a non-believer friend last night about her impending blood-tests for health problems related to many years of type-2 diabetes, she fears she will not be able to "fast" for the six hours requested prior to her hospital appointment as this is timed for 1pm. Around 14:30 As I get older, and continue to learn, it's so clear why our ancestors had certain habits. For example, going for a walk after dinner. That used to be a thing. Eat a big, full, satisfying meal to end your day, then engage in some light exercise to reduce blood sugar spiking. They knew what they were doing. Too bad wisdom isn't passed down through generations anymore. We're having to re-learn all this stuff.
Does this apply to people who do not have diabetes? Because I have fasted 109/99/97/93/105/105 times, knowing that I do intermittent fasting, reducing sugars and carbohydrates to a minimum. My cumulative number of times is 5.3/5/4.8, several different labs, and breakfast. 120/124/113.... Advise us, guys, who knows whether high fasting blood sugar is a stage? Pre-diabetes or due to reducing carbohydrates and intermittent fasting? I hope anyone with knowledge will respond as soon as possible

I fasted for almost 4 days and my sugar dropped to 109 the first day I ate an avocado, 1 hour later I ate a couple of spoons of sauerkraut, 1 hour later I ate sautéed zucchini in olive oil, cashews, macadamia nuts and almond butter. My sugar went to 180. 1 hr later it was 120. Next morning 170. Any idea what happened? I’ve had high sugars for years. Just trying to figure out why it spiked. I’ve been fasting for a while and this has never happened before.

Regarding using exercise to make your muscles suck up the glucose in your bloodstream. I get good results by using free weights to do simple exercises. Heavy weights are not necessary.
I can’t stay without plant based foods doc ! Being a vegetarian I don’t eat animal products and my diabetes started with chemotherapy and radiation I took for. Cancer unfortunately ! Now I am in prediabetic range but trying to eat less carbs and it gets very tough at times with tempting foods on carbs form around me! 😩😩💖hope I can get back to non diabetic soon! 😮😔😫😒
Had breast cancer 10 yrs ago ..at time was also plant based / vegetarian Went thru chemo/radiation with lumpectomy. . Developed t2d as well. It was not until I added meat, seafood that I reversed my T2D. Kept/keep carbs under 10g. Fatty meats keep you not only feeling full but barely impact glucose. My triglycerides prior were 1386, now under 100. In last 2 yrs, mostly ketovore , never felt better and labs are excellent for first time in 20 yrs. Oh and bonus? Lost 70 lbs , naturally gravitated to OMAD bc I am rarely hunger
When I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes (A1C of 6.2), my primary care physician at the time told me to eat "whole grains, and as much fruit as you want." SMH. He's no longer my doctor.
I ordered a fasting insulin for the first time last year using one of those labs online. I think it was about $10. It kind of blows my mind that doctors don't order it.
I don't know but I just hit 40 years old & I don't know if I have diabetes but out of nowhere I start to sweat & shake it feels nasty I need help in order to stop it I eat a sandwich or a chocolate milk I remember back in 210 I was the same way I didn't know what I had it went away alone plus I have my nose clogged up all the time maybe I have sinusitis I wish you was healthy 😢

Both nearby hospital hematology departments knew nothing about a HOMA-IR blood test. I live 30 miles in different directions from these hospitals. None of my standard blood work, over the many years, comes with any information on insulin, only glucose.

I observed my brother in hospital over several days, the nurse taking blood sugar from the patients was saying "that's fine" with his readings being in the range of 8.9, 9.5, 8.5 etc. Clearly pre-diabetic - but is long as you weren't about to drop dead from a diabetic coma - "that's fine" according to the NHS - and then they serve you another plastic tray of carb laden crap followed by jelly and custard for afters. Unbelievable neglect.

And why was your brother hospitalized for several days? 8.5-9.5 mmol/l equals 150-170 mg/dL, it is definitely pre-diabetic for after-meal, but a lot of people are still going around with 200-300 mg/dL (11-16 mmol/l) without realizing they are diabetics

Has it been hard to adjust for what's supposed to be good for you? The older food pyramid suggested much more carbs and eggs were an immediate death sentence (almost). Now things have come around 180°. Do you still see doctors who just about faint if they hear that their patient is eating more than 2 eggs a day?
Sadly I hardly tell them anything. I get my blood work results listen nod pay my bill n leave. They r like automated robots repeating a script as bad as car sales ppl.

How long does it take for you to get to this point?
@@daydreameravaniMy peak weight was about four years ago, and I began a stringent adherence to keto and cleaner eating in spring of 2020 because of the hysteria of the time. I have been stable at about 140 +/- 8-10 pounds since early 2022.
This is not easy. Starting fasting was brutal, getting used to OMAD was slow and I constantly self-sabotaged it. I also "knew" I was in ketosis with certain levels of total and net carbs, "knew" certain foods weren't triggers, and "knew" I could reset from a holiday/stress processed food slip in under 24 hours - and all of this was false. I needed to begin weighing food, counting absolutely everything, and measuring my blood to know what was actually up with my metabolic processes.
And it has to be clean - real, whole food. Commercial "keto" products are almost universally trash, about the most processed thing I eat today is the Egglife wraps. You MUST totally eliminate seed oils and track your omega-6 and omega-3 intake. On days I eat, my OMAD regimen generally includes 1-2 cans of mackerel or sardines, 3-4 high quality pasture eggs, and raw cheese made with grass-fed/grass-finished cow's milk. My omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is almost always under 1, but crucially my overall intake of omega-6 is 5% or less of my energy intake.
Super inspirational!! I’ve lost 50lbs in 4 months and my fasting glucose is in the low 80s with a GKI of 1.5. Currently 19hrs in on a 24hr fast. This information is life changing.

@@jswalk4 I'm in the US, and no one in my medical care pipeline will pay for a fatty acids test, and I'm not sure my primary care physician can even order one if I asked to pay for it out of pocket. I am going to advocate for an advanced lipids test, but I doubt they will even want to test my HbA1c because I'm a 145 pound 6'4 man under 40.
So I am instead relying on nutritional information from food, which is not 100% accurate but it's the best I can do. I get all my omega-3 from fish, eggs, and grass-fed dairy products. Even assuming a 15% minus variation in the omega-3 content of Atlantic mackerel, pasture eggs, and grass-fed raw aged cheese, based on my dietary logging I should have a ratio under 1. That is, more omega-3 than omega-6.
Thank you Dr. Ekberg for all you videos. April this year, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with 355 blood glucose and the Dr. Put in 105unit insulin per day, which really felt terrible everyday. Then I saw your videos and started watching it. After 2months of insulin I decided to follow your videos. Today, I am celebrating because its my 57days of LowCarb and intermittent fasting and I already lose 10kilos of weight. My blood glucose is still stubborn and getting 120-130mg/dl in the morning but getting there. Can't thank you enough for all your knowledge.

@@shakengrain1942 I feel so good that I don''t crave any thing. Man made foods don't register as food for me any more. I don't cheat, so my brain does not remember dopamine to crave stuff. I love my diet, imagine eating stakes, and high fat animal foods every day. I mostly eat raw meat. this causes dopamine detox and you don't crave man made foods. Raw eggs, raw meat, cooked high fat bone/meat broth, lots of butter. 200grams of saturated fat per day minimum. I am 155lbs. I get some glucose from dairy. It is a life style that I love. Carnivore saved my life. Zero depression, great sleep, feeling strong and light in stomach, functioning gut.....ets. Eating raw, you eat much less, but have more energy and feeling lighter, stronger, sharper.

dis-ease) but rather simply a “condition” that the body has adapted to. Remission implies it will most likely return and not improve.
@@vitalishus Well, T1D is an another story to T2D. If you've had T2D it still may return. Even you never had it, you still may get if your life style allows it - see children/teens with T2D. There is no improvement in any case.

@@krakraichbinda of course they are different. That was not my point. Myself personally, I will never get Type 1 or Type 2. I have made sure of that. Keto lifestyle for 10 years and now am carnivore. All bloods are perfect. True that as long as a certain lifestyle (SAD) is adhered to Type 2 is potentially inevitable (not always though) as is Type 1 if there is a genetic component present. Otherwise you can definitely prevent either happening to you without a doubt. The same goes for ANY disease or condition. The trick is finding what really works for the individual.
When I watch your recent videos like this one which goes deeper into "how" the body works to handle the various foods we eat, and the problems caused by eating too much of some things, I am saddened that no one emphasized this when I was younger. I am now 79 years old and my bad eating habits all through my life have already done a lot of damage. Every young person should be taught these things so they can remain healthy throughout their life. How can I help you spread this essential knowledge to the younger generation?

I just went for my first annual physical after starting keto two months ago, last week. My doc was very pleased with my progress and he was completely sold on the keto lifestyle. We were completing each others’ sentences!
This is the same doc who just told me to exercise more when I asked him for a diet plan a couple years ago…. His response was that if he told people to get into keto, they would just eat high fat things along with lots of carbs. Then he’d get blamed, basically.
What a shame because people are suffering and dying needlessly!!

Just so you are aware, this is not medical knowledge. There is some basic chemistry and nutritional information most of which is learned in secondary school. Dr. Sten does a great job of explaining this in the context of diabetes.

For thousands of years people have eaten grains. However, they worked hard to plant them and harvest them and grind them and knead them to make bread which was always whole grain, never anything artificial. GMO’s and pesticides were non existent. Even back in the 50’s and 60’s people were eating carbs and were normal weight but now everything is processed. I ate potatoes at dinner most nights but portion size was small. We had a protein, a starch, and a non starchy vegetable. We were thin. No snacking. An apple for a snack maybe.

I was a sugar addict for many years and quite surprised I didn't get diabetes. I have been off sugar for more than a decade now.
How extreme was the addiction? What did an average day look like sugar wise?
@@01sevensix not every day was the same. It could have been approx a kg of milk chocolate in one afternoon. Another day could have been a big bag of fried chips, fried in canola oil, I would lie to whoever about my addiction. I now tell people to be able to overcome your addiction you first have to be able to admit your addiction.

My whole family suffers with T2DM, including my younger sister (36 yo). Myself, I was never diagnosed with it but I used to crave carbs, suffered with autoimmune disease, acne, frequent viral infections and bowel issues. I started eating clean 10 years ago, currently I have no signs or symptoms of my previous conditions. When I talk to my family about clean eating, less carbs and good fats they become so protective of their diet and lifestyle, not willing to change anything about it…. So sad.

Yeah. I have a mom and brother who are in bad shape and on all kinds of medications. I tried telling them years ago about their diet and exercise, but to no avail. It is sad. If only they wouldn't be so stubborn, they wouldn't suffer as they are now. Then again, most people's will power is set 0 and the excuses come in like stink bugs before winter....

What changes did you make?
Thanks for the excellent videos you've made. Was pre-diabetic for years (5.7) , probably a couple of decades. After following your teachings I decided to live a low carbohydrate life and use daily intermittent fasting. For the past 2 years my A1C and body weight have both returned to "normal" ranges. I also completely stopped drinking alcohol, but found eliminating sugar has been much more difficult. A small treat, every once in a while, seems to work.
Dr. Sten, another excellent IR video. You've covered this so well before but keep adding tidbits that makes your channel "continuing education". The graph of carbs from grain, fruit and non-starchy veggies was great. I haven't seen that before. Please keep adding to and massaging topics you've covered before. Many newcomers will be seeing these for the first time and the rest of us keep getting a fuller and a reinforced understanding of these crucial topics. Thanks!

I continue to be shocked that my clinical colleagues don’t measure fasting insulin levels.
It’s not only the best predictor of future diabetes but 6.7x greater at predicting heart disease compared to cholesterol & LDL.
I continue to be shocked that I'd rather go to TH-cam than someone in the traditional medical system. I developed a severe asthmatic response to histamine having to choose between eating (anything at all) and breathing. I discovered my problem when I started fasting to fix my immune system and put together that I only had symptoms after I ate anything. Great. Now what, I thought.
There was a day I'd have run to the doctor immediately. Instead I came here to Dr. Ekberg (along with Drs. DiNezza, Rajsree, Hyman, and Pelz) and learned how to heal my immune system by fasting and with my food choices. I avoided high histamine food and followed an "extreme" fasting regimen (80% OMAD, 20% 2MAD, one 3-day fast per month) for 5 months. And I'm healed, now, 6 months after self-diagnosing and fixing my problem. I still live a fasting lifestyle and eat an ominvorous, clean diet and I intend to do so for the rest of my life. I'm filled with shalom and my body and mind are in tip-top shape. I'm 51, 5'2" female, and not only healed a severe histamine problem but lost 26 lbs to be settled in at about 103 lbs.
What do you think my outcome would have been had I run to a doctor? Steroids? Albuterol? A pat on the head being told I'm imagining things? I didn't want to find out. Now, _that_ is shocking.
I continue to be shocked that no doctor I ask will even order a fasting insulin when I offer to pay cash. They all insist it is not necessary.

Around 18 years ago, when I lived in the USA, I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic. This was following massive blood sugar drops and what I initially thought were minor seizures. The doctor told me that it was just a matter of time before becoming diabetic. Jump ahead, 4-5 years from that point into the future, and I'm living in South Korea. I was still experiencing some blood sugar problems, so I went to a local doctor. After running some tests, I was informed that enzymes were leaking from my liver. I was prescribed some medication. I took it, and 3-4 days later, I felt fine (although I took the medicine for a couple of weeks). I haven't had blood sugar drops (or what felt like blood sugar drops) ever since that time. I'm not a doctor, but based on my experience, I think diabetes, for some, can be badly misdiagnosed. It was for me.

You're an outlier. I know people like this. One of those people is a member of my family. He is reaching 60 years old can eat what he wants mainly carb heavy meals like chips, doesn't touch fruit at all, never exercises, drinks like a fish down the pub with his mates after he finishes his job. No health conditions whatsoever. He has tons of energy as well. Rarely gets colds or flu. The rest of us in our family are the opposite and have to watch we eat and make sure we exercise. He and two others are the only people in our family who are not diabetic and can eat what they want. It's so unfair.

IR is a lot more prevalent than people think. We had blood tests at our work place (obligatory by law) and nearly all people had high blood sugar levels despite fasting 15 hours before the test. It's truly horrible

My dr put me on 1000mg Glucophage XR for starters (2 weeks) and will probably increase it next Wednesday when I go for my follow up. I hate tablets, never been on meds ever. I also do 16 - 24 hours fasting every 2nd day. Am I on the right track. Thank you once again for helping many people change their lives to live healthy lifestyles. You need to cut all carbs not coming from green leafy vegetables period and you need to fast for as long as it takes for your blood sugar to go down. You will have to last long enough to dump the glycogen stored in your muscles and glucogen for your sugar levels to go down. And even then, you need to be very, very careful with protein. Eat only enough for your lean mass. Like, 0.8g/lb of lean muscle mass and if you notice it causing your sugar to creep, cut back and add fats. You may need a genuine ketogenic diet based upon macros to get control of this.
Good luck. Fasting will help, but try to also cut down on carbs for maximum benefits
My last test, insulin was 3.3, c peptide minimal range, fasting glucose 100. So you would say insulin sensitive. But I have a problem. When I go through an emotional shock, my glucose would go higher than normal and will stay there for much longer. So it's more than diet causing problems.
When your cortisol rises, glucose rises. Stress affects cortisol levels. What ever is causing your stress, RID IT.

I was at 15 insulin and glucose of 100. I'm on day 20 of a 27 day fast. I will check again after 2 weeks of clean eating. NOTE: Dr wouldn't get me a insulin test. Used online "Walk in labs" to schedule it.

Thank you. I am a twin and we're turning 50 in August and neither of us are diabetic but I swim all year round but am still 20 pounds over weight.. I started fasting and cutting out sugars. She went to her doctor and got that needle apparently it helps you lose weight but is for people with diabetes.. I would like any extra advice to show my bossy twin that natural is the way to go and help me lose my 20 pounds. I've lost 3 so far I'm about 11 days of fasting 12/12. Thank you.

I had followed the Gundry diet for about a month and was absolutely astounded by how the fat melted away and I wasn’t hungry. I went from being able to pinch a couple inches to no fat around my belly. I felt great and had a lot of energy. Unfortunately I fell off the wagon and I’m back to eating ice cream and carbs again when I’m stressed. But I do know that it’s quite possible to lose weight on a good diet and with the elimination of some of the high lectin foods it really does help your digestion. Your bowel movements become healthy too, and that’s a big indicator of your gut health. If you don’t have to use toilet paper after a bowel movement, and there is no obnoxious odor, then your diet is just right!

Love your videos and explanations provided in them. I have heard you explain it further before, just not this one. The cells are resisting the affect of insulin because they replete with energy and will not let anymore in until what’s inside is metabolized to make room for additional energy. I believe many people just don’t understand they are over supplying energy and usually not providing enough micronutrients.

Speaking with a non-believer friend last night about her impending blood-tests for health problems related to many years of type-2 diabetes, she fears she will not be able to "fast" for the six hours requested prior to her hospital appointment as this is timed for 1pm. Around 14:30 As I get older, and continue to learn, it's so clear why our ancestors had certain habits. For example, going for a walk after dinner. That used to be a thing. Eat a big, full, satisfying meal to end your day, then engage in some light exercise to reduce blood sugar spiking. They knew what they were doing. Too bad wisdom isn't passed down through generations anymore. We're having to re-learn all this stuff.

My last Haemoglobin A1C was 5.8. Therefore, I have come off sugar and I am still getting used to drinking coffee without Splenda.
I blame the government for allowing processed food volumes to be the staple for most Americans.

Does this apply to people who do not have diabetes? Because I have fasted 109/99/97/93/105/105 times, knowing that I do intermittent fasting, reducing sugars and carbohydrates to a minimum. My cumulative number of times is 5.3/5/4.8, several different labs, and breakfast. 120/124/113.... Advise us, guys, who knows whether high fasting blood sugar is a stage? Pre-diabetes or due to reducing carbohydrates and intermittent fasting? I hope anyone with knowledge will respond as soon as possible

I fasted for almost 4 days and my sugar dropped to 109 the first day I ate an avocado, 1 hour later I ate a couple of spoons of sauerkraut, 1 hour later I ate sautéed zucchini in olive oil, cashews, macadamia nuts and almond butter. My sugar went to 180. 1 hr later it was 120. Next morning 170. Any idea what happened? I’ve had high sugars for years. Just trying to figure out why it spiked. I’ve been fasting for a while and this has never happened before.

Regarding using exercise to make your muscles suck up the glucose in your bloodstream. I get good results by using free weights to do simple exercises. Heavy weights are not necessary.
I can’t stay without plant based foods doc ! Being a vegetarian I don’t eat animal products and my diabetes started with chemotherapy and radiation I took for. Cancer unfortunately ! Now I am in prediabetic range but trying to eat less carbs and it gets very tough at times with tempting foods on carbs form around me! 😩😩💖hope I can get back to non diabetic soon! 😮😔😫😒
Had breast cancer 10 yrs ago ..at time was also plant based / vegetarian Went thru chemo/radiation with lumpectomy. . Developed t2d as well. It was not until I added meat, seafood that I reversed my T2D. Kept/keep carbs under 10g. Fatty meats keep you not only feeling full but barely impact glucose. My triglycerides prior were 1386, now under 100. In last 2 yrs, mostly ketovore , never felt better and labs are excellent for first time in 20 yrs. Oh and bonus? Lost 70 lbs , naturally gravitated to OMAD bc I am rarely hunger
I see a trend, hope you get better health, probably with better food.

When I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes (A1C of 6.2), my primary care physician at the time told me to eat "whole grains, and as much fruit as you want." SMH. He's no longer my doctor.
I ordered a fasting insulin for the first time last year using one of those labs online. I think it was about $10. It kind of blows my mind that doctors don't order it.
I don't know but I just hit 40 years old & I don't know if I have diabetes but out of nowhere I start to sweat & shake it feels nasty I need help in order to stop it I eat a sandwich or a chocolate milk I remember back in 210 I was the same way I didn't know what I had it went away alone plus I have my nose clogged up all the time maybe I have sinusitis I wish you was healthy 😢

Both nearby hospital hematology departments knew nothing about a HOMA-IR blood test. I live 30 miles in different directions from these hospitals. None of my standard blood work, over the many years, comes with any information on insulin, only glucose.
Just get both your fasting glucose and insulin checked then work out the formula yourself.
Yup, there are Homa ir calculator online. You just need your fasting glucose and fasting Insulin

Great video! Thanks a lot Dr! Analogies is the key for the health. As for diabetes the same is ofr cholesterol. Instead of adding the bad and good of it, they should have a ratio between those two kinds of cholesterol and thus the ratio would define who needs cure or not.

Another great video Dr Eckberg!! I binge watch your videos which have kept me on track these past 2 yrs! 2yrs ago A1c was 9.5 with a myriad of health problems. Age 64 now and in excellent health with huge wt loss, and tons of energy. ❤😊. Never going baxk to SAD woe. ! I am going to use independent lab to get my insulin level although i dont know what my original baseline was 2 yrs ago.
