WOW that's OLD SCHOOL!! If I did ANY of that in the 80's, I would have been knocked over the head!

You mean checking clearance , making sure it was in spec, checking a crank to make sure it had the proper bevel on the oil ports and radius at the journals ? Not to mention the taper You would not be in my shop .

@@garyh.7282 NO! I'm talking about mixing different sized Bearings and changing Bearings on an OLD Crank. In MY Shop, we always ground the Crank, because the surface will always be uneven!

@@CarminesRCTipsandTricks That was common practice in the 40's and 50's and even into the 60's . You had to work with what you had . Most car owners were not willing to spend the money to do that type of work . I was trained by mechanics from this era and you did what you had to to keep a car on the road.

@@garyh.7282 I know, my Great Uncle was one of those Mechanics. A Genius in common sense. I was taught by him... but was told that some of it was wrong, when I started working!
Didn't know, but my first and second Jobs were teaching me to be a "Parts Changer"!!😠 Glad I found out before that stuck.
I learned to FIX Cars!! I still think the methods used in the old days seemed unorthodox... But they did make the most out of what little they had to work with! I only realize as I'm reaching 60, that we were SPOILED by Shops that could bring in the latest Equipment - new, used or leased.
But we WERE the Last Generation to have to really WORK on a Car...
Don't get me wrong, Kids today still fix Cars, just in ways we couldn't imagine. Everything's a plug-in, Computer fixes things sometimes before you do!
More replacement Parts are sold as sub-assemblies... You don't have to take as much apart.
.... In some ways it's progress. But I feel like the "Edge" is being taken off of these Guys. They're not developing intuitive common sense.
If a new, unheard of Mechanical concern comes in, I worry that it would perplex them!

@@CarminesRCTipsandTricks My Dad was from the old school and taught me how to think ,evaluate and determine what the defect was from there the repair is simple . You are correct the current gen are just parts changers but the employers are the problem they don't want thinking mechanics they want underpaid slaves that have no pride in their work . My son is enduring this and is about to give up the craft . Breaks my hart but I understand. My career spanned the repair as much as you can to hanging parts . Needless to say the last years were not gratifying only put money in the bank.
