Hi, everythings gets balanced.. a lot deoends upon your colleagues though. First two years will be hectic, but then nothing can beat the spirit to outperform each n every challenge 😁
Hi, whatever you learn while running into wds, seeing pts, attending casualties, being questioned or asking qyestions during rounds and OTs.. these are only asked in exams. For theory, yes you will have to read good books, no shortcuts, read to learn and practice and not to just remember! If you enjoy seeing cases, and doing surgeries, then exams are no big deal. Dept is very cool. No one's toxic, but workload is more, so junior senior have to maintain harmony with each other. Otherwise, juniors are always taken care of, not only by seniors, but also by HOD, Consultants, dept office staff! If you are sincere and hard working, you will make the best bonds with ppl here 😊
Ma'am, please give us some numbers on usual working hours in 1st , 2nd and 3rd year respectively. Also tell us how often do you get whole day offs during your initial 1--3 years.
Approx 100-85-70 hours. Can be little more or less depending on institute and course. You can get the prescribed amount of leaves as per the official notice.
Hi Kautuve1, working hrs exactly, is difficult to tell. During my time, it was only 1 seat per year, so it was very hectic but I enjoyed my hectic residency, I loved it. Now there are 2 seats, so first year in a month you will have 8-9 duties. Duties means continous 36-40 hr duty, during night it depends what all emergencies you get, you may or may not get to sleep, but 2-3 hrs of rest you can manage for sure, but some days may be like no sleep, n such cases, you will be relieved after 36 hrs or your seniors may allow you to work less or rest in bet following day..for this, you need to be sincere and hard working n have good rapport n bond with them. N rest of non duty days, work usually starts from 7.45 ot day/8.45 am non ot day n depending upon cases, it may finish by 6 pm or late till 10-11pm-12-2-3 am like that. Usually seniors stay in OT till late, n first yrs are sent home coz they need to be on time next day n fresh for ward work n rounds. Its a good balance. Everyone is taken care of. Seniors work more than juniors, coz we as seniors become more responsible n get more handson n have to be perfect while performing or taking rounds or correcting mistakes of juniors. As you get senior, your duty days will decrease but you will be reqd more in OTs on non duty days, reqd to stay late in ot until it finishes, thats how you learn n see everything n become so skilled n confident. So first 2 yrs, counting working hrs shouldn't be your question. There is no toxicity, surgical fields require hardships n long stays in hosp n OTs. I never counted no of working hrs nor my seniors counted. You get very good envt to learn, we work hard n party harder. Your health will be more imp to seniors than you yourself, so you will be feeded from time to time, so dont worry about anything at Gangaram except for working hard, longer hosp stays, n more case load. Which will make you the best plastic surgeon for sure.
Thank you mam, but can you please tell us how many duty days per month we have initially and how does the work load change as we progress in seniority , i mean can we expect a decent amount of sleep 😅😅 because not everybody will be able to handle sleep deprivation and continuous work for 6 years at a stretch . And now that there are going to be two residents every year , do you think it will be a little easy with respect to the work hours ?
Hi there.. initial 2 years hectic, will definitely reduce as each year passes, but responsibility increases as you become senior 🙂 2 seats will definitely reduce the wrkload of first yrs 😁 If you love this field, you will enjoy working hard!
Hi, Its difficult to rank all mch plastic institutes.. coz lot depends on cities, your family support if you want if you cannot stay out of your city, bond years, stipend, passing percentage, n whether you want to move out or stay there only after course completion. But one thing without any doubt I can say, that DNB 6 yr at Gangaram tops all plastic surg institute acrosss India! I am very proud n privileged to learn here n become this confident, enthusiastic, Plastic surgeon. N if you are aiming for plastic surg, always aim for best n top institutes mch/dnb, in country or cities. A lot depends upon the student herself/himself, you can turn out to be best from mediocre institute, or worst from best institute. Just see, how much exposure you are getting in institutes. Mostly reconstructive/trauma/ hand ic covered at all places. But cosmetic/ cancer recon/ microsurgeries are not there everywhere. Top medical colleges mch, in metro cities will be good. DNB being pvt will cover cosmetic procedures. Enquire about professors, their subspecialties, stipend, senior junior rapport, overall hosp beds n vol of pts. More volume, more cases, more exposure. You will have to compromise somewhere..be it, less stipend, bond, omitting cosmetic micro exposure uf you ready to invest further yrs in fellowship post superspecialty course, moving out of your home or city, coz staying away from home for straight 6 yrs is also a big decision n change in life, not everyone would be comfortable with it, coz you wont get a long break in bet these yrs! Enquire about all this, make a diary, write pros n cons, talk to residents there, n take your time n choose the best for you. N remember, its never easy, there is struggle till 40 yrs of life, you will not reach satisfaction level in terms of monetary rewards until then. Superspecialty is a long journey, you do it for other rewards, money will come but late. You need to have patience. All the best 😊
During my time, there was only 1 seat per year, so we used to have 10-14 duties( straight 36hrs) in a month in first year, 8-9 in 2nd yr, 6-7 in 3rd yr, 4-5 in 4th yr, 2-3 in 5th yr, and 1-2 in 6th yr. And trust me, furst 2 years, you are doing most no of duties, but those less hectic than you seniors, ciz seniors are always on call depending upon their interests and passion, they will be called to operate in night, responsibilities increase as you get senior. 6th yr is most on calls for OTs despite of only 1-2 duties, he/she/they are the most tired ones, but in a good way, because you get to operate and show your skills and improve them, by the end you come out as confident plastic surgeon, having seen all variety of cases.
