    I recall my Grandfathers mantra on wooden handled and indeed wooden tools. He said, “boiled Linseed Oil, One a week for a month, Once a month for a year, Once a year for life”. My Father had many of his tools and followed the same principle. Proof in point was; I loaned one of my Grandfathers garden forks to my nephew. He did his digging in my garden but lost the fork.
    A year later I was digging for a hard standing to place a shed and dug it up!
    One year in the ground and it was almost as if I had loaned it yesterday.
    We live in ‘throw away’ times: Medication, tools, people and beliefs. Our history though had the answers for longevity of tools and life.

      Raw linsseedoil is best,penetrates deeper and has no lead and other metals or stuff in it. That is what they used in the old days and on millitary rifles too. Just a tip.

    A few years ago I found a large, antique Hewing axe. It was such a thing of beauty that I had to have it. I think I paid $60 for it and it was well-used but taken care of. I used it to make some timbers and it is really satisfying but a serious workout lifting that head and the flakes flying. I sometimes wonder if there are any buildings still standing with timbers hewed with this axe. Ever since then, I've had a thing for axes. If you think about it, the axe was a pivotal invention. It made all kinds of things possible.

    I grew up in the Northwoods of New England on the Canadian Border. We still used axes and small saws in the woods,, especially as children. It was the young boys job to scamper along the felled logs with an axe to limb the trees ahead of the men who would run the chain saws to cut the trees into logs or firewood. I learned to be nimble at an early age. Lol. I have a few axes, hatchets and splitting mauls now. And a few decent saws. Setting and sharpening a saw is becoming a lost art. Just as using a scythe. I am looking forward to retiring back to my land.

    axes of various sizes gain some of their popularity as a tool that can be used effectually as a weapon or a backup weapon. Cutting firewood, cutting logs for a tent. Logging. very useful for both travelers and farmers and general survival. Small axes are easy to carry and transport. Spears are one of the most common weapons. Cheap and affordable and can be thrown like throwing axes and daggers. Goths developed some very effective throwing axes that was effective as melee weapons and used it in one of their rebellions against the roman empire. The axe was able to crack roman shield when thrown and in melee. Less effective at breaking shields used by the Germanic tribes like the Danes and Saxons Roman use large light thin wooden shields.

    I've been wanting a small bearded carving axe about that size. To be a proper carving axe, it would have to have a flat side like a broadaxe. I could have one made, but they cost more than my budget can justify.

  • @bestyoutubechannelever3206
    @bestyoutubechannelever3206 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A helmet a shield and an axe with about a three foot shaft would have been a great combination. You could choke the axe half way up the shaft for faster swings and hold it double handed at the base of the shaft for longer reach and greater impact. Then don't forget your spear. That's your main weapon.
