Your froe is for splitting shingles from softwood like cedar or pine. You can find instructions on TH-cam as to how it's done. It's an enormous amount of work.
that tool is a shingle froe, you use it to split wood into shingles, not for firewood processing. Although the remnants of shingle making can be used for kindling.
If you had found a real Froe instead of an Amazon fake, it would have been different. A Froe designed to split off planks from a log. But one made from spring steel and a real baton would surprise you.
The little thing you hit with the small mallet is a froe, it's used to split wood more accurately for woodworking. Means you dont have to spend as long making the piece square
Every one of Tyler's videos has a ton of people saying he's doing something wrong. While it may be true, he's a normal dude. Normal people are gonna end up doing the same things as they haven't worked in the field like everybody who leaves comments does, normal people are watching Tyler's reviews. I think y'all need to cut him some slack.
Right?!? Top comment I saw was saying he doesn't know how to swing a splitting maul... so wtf have I been doing wrong for 26 years? Shit works. Everyone in the comments just wants to sound smarter than errybody else or something, shouldn't be listened to
Tyler have you ever tried the hatchet with a hammer technique on the edge of the wood for making splits? Also works really well for not a ton of energy.
I've seen that star shaped wedge before and thought the same as you at first but i think it's just like a splitting axe with the fins on the side to help spread. I think the last one with the wood mallet is a shake or shaker axe something like that i assume for wood shingles
9:30 the blade is called a froe and the mallet isn't a mallet...it's a maul. They are a woodworking tool for when you wanna make something from scratch.
The thing with the long blade is called a maul and it is used to split wood along the grain, IE between the rings, if you try and split across the rings they don't work. They are primarily a very old carpentry tool. Shay
5:05 - I know the meme is we all tell Tyler he's not doing something right and that's why it's not working, and I'm gonna be that guy now, you need to hit on all spots ACROSS the round. You wanna be making contact with all of the solid parts, not just the parts you've already cracked. Those parts absorb SO much impact and leave you wasting a ton of energy. As soon as you see that crack, hit the round on the complete opposite end and you might crack that sucker in 2 swings
I worked with such one, was big fun. Best thing: You can split wood on a concrete floor and you will never hit the floor. Obviously you will have *better* results on a quite hard underground...
I’ll never give up my splitting maul. Your original one is best. Because it won’t get caught up going further in. And the first wedge you used is a monster. Gotta use them near edges.
The only minus i can see for the splitting axe would be the fact it throws the logs far apart, you have to go bend over and grab them all around the chopping block, and there's always question, how long are the spring loaded parts gonna last?
Hey man, completely off topic, have you had house tested for mold? I noticed in this video your eyes changed a bit, possibly humidity too high in house.. Maby do a future video on it
Sucks that the Axe was starting to show wear after such short usage. Looks like one of the pins holding the rotating 'feet' has already started to come out.

A froe is a carpentry tool. It's not really for splitting firewood. When you use the right tool for the wrong job, you get your experience here.
The wood will split easier if you say "Okie Dokie" before you swing the ax.
Lovely !
That's law, that's nature. Facts.
It's true!
This guy knows
that tool is a shingle froe, you use it to split wood into shingles, not for firewood processing. Although the remnants of shingle making can be used for kindling.
duh
I loved the close up shots of the axe in action, insteresing to see how long it holds up
The one is worth the watch just to see Tyler doing all this hard work.
If you had found a real Froe instead of an Amazon fake, it would have been different. A Froe designed to split off planks from a log. But one made from spring steel and a real baton would surprise you.
His wedge keeps slipping and coming out, "That usually doesnt happen"
She's not impressed...
Yeah, seems like a skill issue to me.
Quit coping you two!
More of these types of videos please. This was a great test. Love wood cutting tools!
I bought that splitter axe for my husband and he loved it until one of the springs popped out. 😅
It looks like one of the pins is falling out of the splitter axe around the 12:05 mark
it never ceases to amaze me how incredible Tyler is at baiting the comments section 😂
may i axe you a question about this cutting edge video? because im split on the matter...
lol good one
I don't have much time, so chop chop!
May I axe you a question… every black person… they can’t say ask
@@tylerwestman5258I doubt Morgan Freeman would say axe instead of ask.
@@MattIsTheCat he's a formal black

Also what he's doing isn't "wrong" if it's working. He may not be as efficient as he could be. But we could all be more efficient couldn't we
Dont you know that everyone on the Internet are experts?
I wanna say a normal man generally knows how to the majority of tools.
This day an age men have no excuse not.
Nah fr

its a Froe, and it does have a lot of utility. I used one to make the wooden shingles on my cabin
@@memberwhen22 a froe is very useful… I use them to make boards for axe handles

8:42 This part had me dying laughing.😂😂😂

Shay
you mean a froe
it's called a froe
thanks for the information
@MrSkaterpunk13 yeah that's it, the maul is the sideways axe as far as I remember, got mixed up in my head.
It's primarily used to make wood shingles for roofing
5:05 - I know the meme is we all tell Tyler he's not doing something right and that's why it's not working, and I'm gonna be that guy now, you need to hit on all spots ACROSS the round. I think tyler tube got us. I think his day job is a lumber jack. He does it for a Leaving
Tyler: *hardly swings* “I don’t understand!”
It's a froe and it's meant to split wooden shingles off logs. So you only take off thinner slices
So uh. Tyler is a professional wood splitter. 😂
The blue wedge may have been popping out since it was new ans slick. If it had a little wear and tear on it may have gripped onto the wood better.
I've waited YEARS for you to review this!!!!
If that spring loaded maul is new its a knock off of the chopper. A vintage splitting maul. I have one. The original is actually pretty heavy.
I worked with such one, was big fun. Best thing: You can split wood on a concrete floor and you will never hit the floor. Obviously you will have *better* results on a quite hard underground...
Pro-Tip: If you cracked a log good enough, use a wedge to finish, otherwise you will unnecessarily put a lot of force on the spring-mechanism.
I’ll never give up my splitting maul. Your original one is best. Because it won’t get caught up going further in. And the first wedge you used is a monster. Gotta use them near edges.
Freezing out there with your green leaves ha
Where can I get that hoodie????
Every year while splitting wood I keep saying to myself "next year I'm buying a hydraulic wood splitter"
The last thing you tried is called a froe, it's used for making roof shingles.
im only 6 minutes in but i think the point of the easygo axe is so it doesnt get stuck in the wood more than it is for helping split it in half
tyler im telling you if you crossed over into out doors content like this more and then camping you would get a lot more subs
your humor with outdoors content and seeing you painfully figure it out would be really fun to watch
We are blessed with vids at the Moment 🎉
Thx Tyler keep it up🤍🤝
Waited the whole video for Tyler to just grab a piece and Captain America it with his bare hands 🤣
You use the batoning cutter for making wooden shingles and siding.
The only minus i can see for the splitting axe would be the fact it throws the logs far apart, you have to go bend over and grab them all around the chopping block, and there's always question, how long are the spring loaded parts gonna last?
That froy is for making split cedar shingles.
7:37 don't worry bro it happens to us all. As long as you can keep going she'll be ok with it.
That last item looks like a primitive machete of sorts.
This was really relaxing watching you split wood
Is that your "Bookies" (LOL) hammock I spot in the background?
The last wedge you used is actually for making wooden board's and wooden shingles.
Try out the Fiskars X-27 splitting axe and see how it compares.
I think you’re suppose to split the froy with a heavier mallet preferably from a discarded wood.
Hey man, completely off topic, have you had house tested for mold? I noticed in this video your eyes changed a bit, possibly humidity too high in house.. Maby do a future video on it
A froe is ment to do more finesse stuff like cedar shingles and way softer woods
12# maul will do the job on the big ones. Dull edge and a good handle always did the job as a 12yr old kid back in the day.
how is it goin
I had this same axe in the 1980’s was called chopper one. It was awesome and much better than anything else I had
It’s called a fro and it’s for splitting shakes from cedar.
Use the heavy one for bigger rounds to breach it then use the new one to finish it.
You finally finding out about this. I remember seeing this axe years ago on crazy Russian hackers channel
“That usually doesn’t happen”. It’s ok Tyler, performance anxiety in front of a camera happens
You can definitely tell you have done this before! I have split a lot of logs and you are way more accurate than me!
Someone get this man an old car tire
Standard equipment when splitting by hand.
Another great video, thanks Tyler

Tyler been uploading more recently 👀?
That "thing" you didn't know what the name was is called A froe.
Wedges are for existing cracks
@@SnaggleX no… wrong
Id like to see more upgrades to your truck
That is a newer version of the old Chopper 1. We had one in the 80’s , actually I still have it. Best damn splitting axe ever.
Try splitting some hard wood that thing it won’t stand a chance especially with how much it weighs btw that is really soft wood that he is splitting
You need to name the Maul you aren't going to use, Darth.
How much $?
7:55 that’s what he said to her
You should collaborate with the Slow mo guys on this one.
The last one is to make thin roof shingles from wood.
9:47 For making cedar shingles! Not firewood
I love watching your videos but you really should do some research on what you’re reviewing. 💕
I like how you left in the mistakes in your video
It’s a froe, you need to sharpen the edge and also probably get a better quality one
The wedge that comes to a point is so much better than that traditional wedge, sent the old school wedge flying so many times
At least he didn't burn himself or his mouth this time!
I see experts everywhere 😅
Tyler splitting wood ❤😮🤤
2 hits and split, nice
That "easy go" is a rip off of the famous "Chopper One"
Gloves, Tyler! Jeez!
Please remove the varnish from the handle and properly linseed oil treat it. Thankssss
Put the log in an old tire and it won’t fly off into space.
Anyone looking for another video on this axe I believe wranglerstar did a great one a few years back
Wedge on the outside, just stupid to put it in the middle.
How did he use a chisel for years and still not know how to use one lol
Wow.. I would break that in about 3 weeks
find the BEST axe in the world.
Nice!
6:15 nah that was 2 vs 2. Those other 2 hits dont count you totally missed.
I don’t know does it cost more than 200$$
Good video
Hello everyone
Sharpen it first the L thingy

You swing like my aunt
He swings like your mom.
