    Keep up the great work, you are just starting out welding, you will get better, some of these so called experts forgot where they started, they sucked! Am working on my 8'th Z car, the metal just blows out soo easy, make sure you have clean metal and a good ground, use weld through primer and thin wire on the welder so you don't have to grind so much, again you are doing great!

    When you weld move in a "C" pattern as if the C is on its back to keep the edges of the weld from getting too cold too fast. Also weld 1/2 inch on one end of the patch then move to the opposite side and weld another 1/2 inch then go back and forth to avoid warping the metal.

    so stoked for this man! I'm doing really similar back from the grave type stuff on my mgb. I will DEFINITELY be using the duct tape trick next time I patch.. brilliant

    Dude, I'm soo happy you trusted our advice and got a gas welder, those welds are looking really good.
    For the paint
    ust\undercoat removal, get yourself some poly abrasive discs for your grinder.. Imagine a flap disc but it doesn't remove any metal.

      Thanks! When I looked up videos of Flux vs. Mig on sheet metal, I knew I had to get one. I just ordered a bunch of those strip/poly discs after others were saying the same thing. Excited to try them out!

    Good work on the proper welder and fixing up the older patches. Please look up Fitzees Fabrications TH-cam for advice on patches, he is the best! Now find yourself a sandblaster for the whole car to get rid of all the rust etching and leaving you a clean surface to paint. Build it as if it's got to last another 50 years please

    Would also recommend .023 wire. Thinner wire, less amperage to break, easy to get a bead on thin metal and not burn through

    Like your videos! Keep up the good work! Tip, round of the corners of the patch panel , that way its much easier to weld and the risk of burning through is minimized...

    MIG welding, the "I" means inert. Although the gasses that are mostly used in MIG welding are not really inert, they still provide a cover to prevent air from entering the welding area. So if you are not using gas, you are not MIG welding. There are reasons to use a flux core wire, but most of the time you will do better with a cover gas.
    I learned from gas welding, then went to TIG, stick, and last, MIG.
    BTW, I'm the original owner of a "72" 240Z and am restoring it. I was able to purchase aftermarket floor panels.

    Awesome job on fixing old mistakes! I only know how to tig weld and I’m hoping that I’m able to do my own patch work with my tig welder on my datsun but I know mig is what the entire industry uses for this stuff. We’ll see!

    Matheson gas is a large welding supplier company that is across the country. They will let you upgrade your empty gas bottle to a full larger size bottle for very reasonable prices. I bought an empty 60 cu bottle and exchanged it for a full 80cu bottle for about $20 from them.

    Right on buddy! That floor pan really doesn't look all that bad with only a few patches! That jig is clutch for doing this work on both sides!
    Was the gas expensive?? I think this is what I need in my life 🤣

    Serious question here: why not grind down the welds to make it look a lil bit prettier? Is it due to the fact you are going to spray a thick layer of undercoating over it anyway?

I think Grinding down the welds would finish the job perfectly and keep the standard and quality of work as high as possible. I do understand if you didn't, its already better than what most body shops would do. Well done dude!

    dont use a galvanized metal, since its poisonous, not shure how its writen, but you should do .9 mm thick steel, thats cal 20 for you youl get the best result, also grinde al welds since moisture and dirt will deposit an make rust again, also last tip is that the patches should be half wide thick of the metal you weld so it allows metal to expand with heat and you wil get less distortion or overlaping, its good to weld in oposite movements so you get as little heat as possible. never the less its good you re done it!. cheers!

    If you’re going to be welding any body panels turn your heat down by a third to a half of your settings for floor pans. Otherwise there will be blow through for days.

    Hey mate watch out for Asbest at the Datsun Brakes are made out it, tue Clutch ( the Dust inside too) and the headgaskets Asbest is HILGHLY cacerious so watch out use brakecleaner to make the dust wet und get ur self a FFP3 mask to protect ur lungs

    Would be better if you got a good aggressive flap disc for your angle grinder and grind down the old welds. Weld on top of this flat surface and make sure you penetrate the piece. If you have the grinder skill and the right flap disc this should be easier, faster and better.

      If you do go this route, first practise grinding down welds on that panel you practised welding on.

      That’s a good idea, you think a flap disc would cut down the metal faster than a grinding wheel? In the past I’ve found grinding wheels to be extremely slow

      I’ve had a few sitting around and just tried it out, and WOW! Seriously so much faster than a grinding wheel. Why is the flap disc not called a grinding flap disc 🤣🤣

    Hello my friend are you in Pennsylvania? I am a welder well, I am a chemist however I hate it. I was hit while riding on my Harley and wound up in the Hospital with life threatening blood clots that went to my lungs and heart. I ended up recovering but also putting on 60 pounds . I started working that fat off and found a junkyard Porsche to work on.
