Generally, the celebrities themselves don’t pay the $55,000 for the star. Usually it’s the studios and/or companies they’re working with paying for it, solely for the publicity for the project they’re working on. For example, the final season of Better Call Saul was about to come out, so AMC bought the star for Bob just for the buzz. They mentioned this is why someone like Weird Al Yankovic didn’t have a star for most of his career. Because he wasn’t working with any major companies, and he wasn’t going to buy one for himself.
