    I think the Brienne/Stannis plot point was a clumsy attempt to hit her big book choice, where she has to choose between Jaime and Lady Stoneheart.
    D&D chose to ommit LS and had Jaime messing around in Dorne, so to hit a similar note, and give her a reason to ever be on screen, they replaced them with Sansa and Stannis.

    I think it would be a mistake to have Stannis lose to Ramsey.
    1- What purpose has Dance been? If Stannis loses, the northern/rhollor army is lost for Jon.
    2- How is Jon going to win the throne? Only with savages? Is there time, and is it really interesting, a new plot to recruit the North?
    3- How do Davos and Shireen fit into that scheme? What's the point of Rickon without a northern army? Are you really going to burn your daughter for the Boltons? The dilemma "A child in exchange for saving the world" loses a bit.
    4- Can a Ramsey with no military training, an idiot, who has lost Manderly and Frey, who has killed his father (and dozens of others), and who is hated by his allies, win anyone? Really?
    5- I think that Brienne's dilemma may be a reflection of the non-existent Jaime/Brienne plot in the Land of Rivers. And even if it wasn't, it can happen later with Stannis victorious, or defeated by the Others.

    • @arnausb3056
      @arnausb3056 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In fact, I think The Winds of Winter fits more with the structure of Stannis winning:
      JON: We see something of Ghost, something of Melisandre, and then Jon returns, organizes what he can from the Wall and goes south, maybe with the fall of the Mur? Along the way, a darker Jon, concerned about his Stark inheritance, may destroy Karhold and a Ramsey who will take refuge with the few remaining Boltons, a mirror of the scene of Ramsey's cruel death, devoured.
      DAVOS: A couple of chapters in Skagos, one on a return trip with dark news of the fall of Eastwatch and "dead in the water", rumors of savages rampaging south of the Wall...
      STANNIS: Battle of the lake, battle or trick of Winterfell. Management of the "victory", chaos due to the Stark inheritance and opposing allies, due to winter, fall of the Wall... I play with who is the prince of royal blood that Stannis is going to sacrifice to fix everything (The only plausible solution I see for a living Theon is that Stannis wants to keep him for Melisandre and a powerful ritual). Theon first as the obvious one, Rickon later as the surprise and difficulty because that breaks their alliance with the North, and finally Shireen as the true sacrifice with the arrival of Jon, who is willing to take the northern army for himself over Stannis and Rickon, and a Meli who begins to doubt. Maybe also in the face of the imminence of the Others. Theon escapes with Asha?
      However, if Stannis dies, when does burning Shireen fit? (something we are certain of).
      He returns with a few troops to the chaos of the Wall and there he decides to burn his daughter as the last option to win the Throne and before the arrival of the Others? And then Jon comes back as a result? There is no intention of Meli to turn him around, it just happens and then he changes sides?
      It could be... especially if the resistance were to take place at the Wall and not at Winterfell, but that doesn't seem most likely.
      Although I think it is difficult to fit Rickon/Davos in there (there is no northern army that can support him) and Jon still has no army, and needs it more than ever, since Ramsey is sleeping peacefully in Winterfell (and Jon has to fight the -third in a book- Battle of Winterfell to win). And, of course, it doesn't solve the Brienne issue, in fact it pushes them further away.
      Stannis strutting in front of a nobody doesn't seem like enough of a reason to counteract all these problems.

    no carmine was correct about the red comet, its purpose was so every character looking at it can justify that what they're doing is a divine signal and that they should continue but some used it as an omen. preston needs to stop thinking that his line of thinking is the only correct one and i know carmine wants to be respectful and not argue on his stream but damn is it frustrating sometimes.

      Preston has been sooooo bitter recently. He could benefit from trying to reconnect with what he liked about the story if he is going to continue making content about it.
      He is as scathing to the books as a book-enjoyer is to the show. These books are great as they are, even if no sequels ever come. But Preston clearly feels betrayed by there being no conclusion, and assumes that means that George must actually be incompetent.

    Preston. Please… I’m begging you. Don’t let ANY aspect of the show influence the direction of the fanfic. There’s nothing about the Stannis show storyline that’s confirmed; we know it was terrible in the show; and it’s entirely possible that the writers room came up with this thematically relevant but utterly stupid plot point.

    • @ModernSynthesist
      @ModernSynthesist หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      How is he supposed to completely ignore the show as an information point. On some level it was based on George's outline to D&D. We don't know which parts, but you can't just throw it away.
      I'm glad Preston is still looking at it and considering it critically.

    • @adashofbitter
      @adashofbitter หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@ModernSynthesist Because, given the reception to the show and given how vague the details of his outline given to D&D were, it’s basically useless as a source of information. For one thing, GRRM may well have changed his mind by now (especially considering how people responded to the last few seasons) as he has countless times before about major plot points. Additionally, most of what the show did with its characters is impossible in the books. And because it was just plain bad - I can’t think of a single plot point from season 6 onwards that worked and most of it felt decidedly un-GRRM. Let’s be honest, the writers borrowed more from theory discussions on reddit than they did from GRRM.

    39:30 Cersei's plan to send 100 dudes to the Wall to take out Jon Snow was never actually carried out. The plan was to send them with Osney Kettleback after he's caught abed with Marge: "All you need to do is k*ll a boy.... A bastard boy in league with Stannis. He's young and green, and you'll have a *hundred men* .... Bed a girl and k*ll a boy and I am yours" (Cersei IV AFfC)
    Obviously Cersei's arrest quashes the plan, and I don't see her reviving it. As for the fates of the Kettlebacks, this was Kevan's plan: death for Osney and "The Wall, if [Osmund and Osfryd] admit their guilt. If they deny it, they can face Ser Robert." (Epilogue ADwD) Kevan's plan might get fulfilled, but it could be fun to have the brothers end up on opposite sides of the wars? Maybe Osmund (or else Meryn Trant) joins Aegon's kingsguard, and despite being a pretty terrible dude and definitely NOT a chivalric ideal, he starts getting viewed that way, and treated as a source of legitimacy for Aegon? Similar to Tyrion talking about Barristan here: "Ser Barristan was the Lord Commander of Robert Baratheon's Kingsguard," Tyrion reminded her pointedly. "He and Jaime are the only survivors of Aerys Targaryen's seven. The smallfolk talk of him in the same way they talk of Serwyn of the Mirror Shield and Prince Aemon the Dragonknight. What do you imagine they'll think when they see Barristan the Bold riding beside Robb Stark or Stannis Baratheon?" (Tyrion I ACoK)

    30:08 regarding the comet, we know that grrm is a huge british history nerd and he "borrows" lots of events from there. In the bayeux tapestry depicting the war between william the conqueror and harold, a comet is depicted in the sky in the part where harold ("the false king") is crowned as king of england.
    I asked our professor and he replied that a comet is depicted as an ill omen in the middle ages within various european cultures. It is even theorized that they all witness the halley's comet.

    53:20 With the Horn of Winter, I recently stumbled onto where GRRM likely got this idea from - the hunting horn that's supposed to awaken the Irish mythological hero Fionn mac Cumhaill during Ireland's greatest hour of need (similar to the mythos of the return of King Arthur, although Arthur's legends lack a horn). GRRM borrows a lot from Irish mythology: he's compared the Others to the sídhe and the history of Westeros has a lot in common with the Lebor Gabála Érenn (several waves of peoples coming to Westeros/Ireland, a pact that splits the land, giving the Otherworld to the Fae, and stuff isn't written down until much later, when the dominant religion has changed, resulting in muddled myths and anachronisms like pre-Fot7 knights)
    Not sure if this Irish myth can predict what GRRM's planning... To follow the legend closely, the Night's Watch blow the horn, which awakens Bran the Builder & co? Heroes of old coming back to fight an a last apocalyptic battle at the end of the world is a _very_ old idea, and exists in many mythologies. I know GRRM adapted "The Last Defender of Camelot" for "The Twilight Zone", where the return of Merlin is a bad thing because his ideas don't fit with the modern world. There's a biblical myth about a dude Joshua who uses a horn to tear down city walls at Jericho, as well...
    OK, what about this: the Wall wards are maintained by CotF plugged into the weirwood net, like the ones Bran sees in BR's cave: "full of singers, enthroned like Brynden in nests of weirwood roots that wove under and through and around their bodies. Most of them looked dead to him, but as he crossed in front of them their eyes would open and follow the light of his torch, and one of them opened and closed a wrinkled mouth as if he were trying to speak" (Bran III ADwD). Perhaps something wakes them up (literally or thematically a horn blast), and since their consciousness is no longer used to prop up the Wall wards, the Wall falls?

Basically Yrkoon was right: although their society was horrific, Yrkoon tried to keep all the magic and power under their control whereas Elric wanted their entire civilization to just die, because he was too melancholic to find a solution to it. Yrkoon in the end pushes his sister Cymoril onto Elric's sword and she dies. But their enmity is short lived as Yrkoon dies almost immediately after.

    I have always assumed that Bran is just a pawn of the Weirwood hive mind. The Weirwoods put out feelers for powerful greenseers, and then use them to do their bidding. Eventually they get worn out and absorbed, as is happening to Bloodraven.
    Bran is theoretically the most powerful greenseer, strong enough to change the timeline, but he’s still going to be absorbed into the hive mind.

    Early on, Preston depends a lot on the concept of ideas being dated by chronological genesis in publication. I’m not sure if this is a dependable method, albeit maybe all we have. An idea that hasn’t been published by a certain date does not mean it was not thought of, or GRRM had “concepts of an idea” long prior to its introduction in the published works.

    • @playerkit
      @playerkit หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      A key ingredient of long form storytelling is that you introduce things overtime instead of all at once. I find the attempts to determine when certain ideas were thought of before being introduced in the books to be extremely tedious. It's futile; was it not mentioned before because it wasn't thought of yet, or was it withheld for other reasons? Only the author can truly know the answer.

    I think the more George thing to do with Shiera Seastar is that the whole thing is not a lift but a subversion, I think if she was dead that would be part of the story as told because it's a classic fantasy sort of thing - the subversion would be that she didn't love either of them, or maybe she loved both of them but didn't want to decide, and chose to assert her independence as a woman, and leave them to just fight each other instead of treating her like an object they both wanted to obtain ahead of the other. So her being Quaithe would be a possible version of that.

    10:00 While Backfyres weren't introduced until ASoS, Shiera _is_ mentioned in ACoK (sort of). Dany calls the comet the "shierak qiya", which means "Bleeding Star". GRRM puts a lot of thought into character names; I'm almost certain he wanted a character called Shiera associated with stars who would have a TBD place in history paralleling Bran's mentor, _then_ decided "Shiera" would mean "Star" in Essosi languages, and put that fun dothraki linguistic fact into the text as a clue for readers. I just don't see GRRM writing it the other way, where he decides "Shierak" is a cool word for star, and then _years_ later revisits it as character name.

    [The red comet is an infinity stone confirmed] 1:16:30 it's wild that stannis was keeping Gamy Gam around after having already blown up the Deathstar just because she's a haracrux... atleast we know why the lord of light chose him: Lightbringer will be used to find a save Siri, yay.

    I always assumed that when Mel saw Stannis leading the fight against the dead: he actually was leading the fight, but he’s the lord commander after Jon. It would make sense for him to denounce his claim and take the black after he has Shireen burned, his wife may or may not unalive herself, he will eventually find out his lightbringer is fake, that Jon is “Azor Ahai”, and Mel will abandon him.
    He could die leading the fight against the Others/ Wights. That way Dolores Ed can be the 1000th Lord Commander! And all will be right with the world!🤪

    Stannis is defeated due to the storm, goes back to the Night Fort where Selyse fled to having kidnapped Monster. Stannis is about to burn the kid, but Mel reveals he was swapped, so he accepts to burn Shireen. He burns her, his sword goes magical-ish, he takes the black and is elected 999th lord commander, he goes with his men north of the wall led by Mel to kill the Great Other’s champions, he makes it to the cave to kill Bran and BR, but him and Mel instead submit to the Others and leads them back to the Wall to go through the Black Gate to become king. Brienne and LS turn their sight north when LS hears Stannis is trying to take Winterfell, but by the time they get there he has become the NK and has taken over the Night Fort and Jon and co are preparing to fight the Others after retaking Winterfell. Brienne probably faces Stannis eventually, as the NK.

    The difference between a warship and a merchant ship is, with all due respect, rather significant: One has a specific ram at the front, the other does not - but those were essentially Mediterranean only, even more specific in state and time. What Preston likely meant was that in northern/western Europe, there indeed was no significant difference between the two, but they fought by boarding the enemy vessel.

    • @StalkerQtya
      @StalkerQtya หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The build-up of merchant ships can vary, especially in the middle ages, where classification wasn't really a thing, so it depends how it was built.
      Merchant ships are usually more bulky, harder to navigate in short distances (because why would you need the giant transport vehicle with several tons worth of cargo to be nimble?) and usually have less meaning to place weapons on them.
      Warships also can wary, but on average they are more nimble than your average cargo ship, as they don't need a giant cargo-hold to slow down the ship.

    I'm personally not keen on the idea of plot twists that rely too much on the reader having prior knowledge of the Blackfyre rebellion era (e.g. Shiera Seastar is Quaithe, Aegon is a secret Blackfyre). Unless you're a superfan who has read all of the other material outside the main ASOIAF books then you're unlikely to understand the huge relevance of such plot twists and George can't afford to waste valuable page space explaining this to us

    While it is true that Russia is the aggressor for this war, Preston is thinking too naively about geopolitics. Joining a defense pact that was formed against you and that is so extremely strong close to your borders is a threat. Ultimately the west will see itself as the good side no matter what (as is its right) and should fight Russia but it doesn't mean that Russia was completely unprovoked as Preston is trying to simplify it into

    Damn, the part about ships before canons is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. There was a clear difference between merchants and warships in older societies. Ramming requires bigger sturdier and more manned ships. The ships Rome used in ancient times for warfare against the Egyptians and the Carthaginians would be quite different to normal merchant ships. A warfare galley would have rams, moveable bridges, catapults, ballistae, greek fire but most importantly a thicker and sturdier hull. The Dromon for example was a Byzantine warship of great size that while also being a galley was never gonna be used for mercantile endeavours. Preston, please, do not speak nonsense on such topics without doing research.
    Edit: Maybe you do know of this and were just using very harsh language. I would recommend not doing that for complex topics in which you lack expertise. Being confused about the Ironborn talking about warships was particularly weird. I do not know a single civilisation with a standing navy that used merchant ships in big naval engagements.

    Preston, want something you can "theory-craft" for, and something that is DEEP? More importantly, a series that is finished and isn't hanging?If you really do, then please, please, for the love of God, leave ASOIAF for a bit and read Malazan Book of the Fallen!
    Channels that specifically specialize in ASOIAF content are slowly driving me crazy because ASOIAF is monopolizing the big channels' time! It's like Shakespeare does in the academic field! It's really unfair!

    • @OfficialRedTeamReview
      @OfficialRedTeamReview หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because you have new channels coming in doing content on a book series that hasn't had a new entry in 13 years. Nobody wants to do anything new or that isn't adapted into a television/movie series. ASOIAF gets you views and everybody is looking for the next big theory that'll blow their minds when in reality everything that can be said about the series has been said.
