    The Roy Crutchfield Homicide in 1974 is about the night Mack Thomas and some younger Compton Crips took a ride down Hoover Street in South Los Angeles. While throwing up gang signs at a group of people believed to be Brims, their dark colored Cheverolet was hit with glass bottles.

    Kev your work is always excellent. It's not just gang history. It's Los Angeles history. And these are stories that need to be told. I know your focus is gangs. But maybe you could do a short video specifically on the Great Migration and how it impacted the Black demographics of Los Angeles. It always amazes me when I read your comment sections and someone is surprised that some OG from that first or second generation was born down South.

    Unbelievable. Just a kid. Wrong place, wrong time. I wonder how his family is doing today? Did they move back to the East Coast? How do you move on mentally/emotionally after something so senseless and tragic? God bless his remaining family.

    So Mack Thomas is from Covington, TN. The first time I ever heard of Covington was from reading some info on Isaac Hayes way back in the day when I bought many of his albums. He was born there. He left Covington too, it was a very hard place, but he didn't go all the way to west coast; just down the road to Memphis where he helped make Stax Records a thing. He was peaking in the late 60s/ early 70s, about the same time Thomas and The Crips were budding. It is probably safe to say that Ike is Covington's "favorite son."
    Stanley Williams' side kick Buddha, like Mack Thomas was from Tennessee also, but I don't know the city. Buddha Records started just a little before the Crips were being organized. New York mobsters ran a big part of it for a while. It was peaking around the same time Crip- Buddha was thugging it out and was killed. The Buddha name is just a coincidence, but there is a definite Tennessee connection and influence in crippin I guess. By the way Ike had a series of tracks called "Ike's Rap." It was the first time I ever heard the word "rap" associated with music. Now I ain't saying he started the movement, not at all, I'm just saying it was the first time I personally heard the term used for a track, that's all. Ah, Covington! Hell, I'm going to go Google Earth and do a fly over just to see what it looks like today! Probably worse. If Mack Thomas' parents went back to Tennessee it was probably because the pain of his death in LA County was greater staying there than the pain of going back home.

      GREAT HISTORY THERE.
      OKLAHOMA IS ANOTHER PLACE THAT FOLKS FROM TO CALIFORNIA.
      IN FACT HOOVER CRIPS ARE DEEP OUT IN OKC
      GRAPE ST IS DEEP IN MEMPHIS
      R60’S IS DEEP IN ST LOUIS & ATLANTA
      LOS ANGELES GANGS ARE ALL OVER THE SOUTH.

    • @delstanley1349
      @delstanley1349 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2Pkb25 >You mentioned Oklahoma. Oklahoma is a little unusual in that it included some major white migration. The migration got so huge in CA in the 30s that the state had highway patrolmen stopping people including whites at the CA border. They would not let anybody in despite that act being unconstitutional! White Oklahomans fleeing the "dust bowl" were deemed "white niggers" to many Californians at the time. You mentioned Grape Street. The plight of migrants from OK inspired the book "Grapes of Wrath." I know it is unrelated, but just bringing up the word had some slight connection. That would be a hell of a name for a Grape Street gang, "Grapes of Wrath." I doubt if they would be singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic, however! 😬
      My grandparents (father and mother side) are from central Texas and they went to the LA area in the 50s so they were part of the black Texans' migration. Other relatives that didn't make it all the way to LA, settled in west Texas and picked cotton where ever it grew in west Texas. The ones from central Texas that didn't go west, stayed in Texas picking cotton. Some acquired land and did some simple farming.

      I believe there needs to be an encyclopedia (accommodated with footnotes, genealogy, news paper clippings, photos, news reels, criminal court cases, annotations, etc.) and with a KMV DVD/jump drive to research the material. They came from South not because they were "real". They came because that's where most of the Black people in America lived at the time. So if they are forming a Black gang in that time period most of the originals are going to be from down South. You have to remember the Black population of Los Angeles exploded after WWII ended in 1945. There was a huge influx of Blacks coming from the South. Prior to this there very few Blacks in L.A.
      Also Tookie was born in New Orleans. Raymond Washington was born in Los Angeles. In fact, most from that generation that were born out of state were either from Louisiana or Texas.
