- I tested Samsung 990 PRO SSD M.2 NVMe and WD BLACK SN850X NVMe with Samsung Magician, CrystalDisk Mark and PCMark
Samsung month use
WD 3 months use.
My opinion is that Samsung is little better and WD sometimes do strange like small lags when 2-3 files compressed at the same time.
Sure this is not axact. It depends sometimes when hardware is different.

Thx for the extensive comparison. In your experience, which one would be more reliable for storing data? When durability is more important than speed. regards
I think both are so close but for many years all Samsung m2 i used were very good. Sure sometimes luck is important.
These are both top of the line products they should last similar amount of usage. I would say samsung is better not for the sdd but for the app samsung magician.
Does Samsung Magician work on the 990 Pro now? I know at one point reviewers were saying it did not work with the 990 Pro. My concerns are around the degradation issues that have popped up. People losing 5-10% drive health in a few weeks? That’s insanity. I saw a report of someone who’s 990 Pro drive had a health of 64% and hadn’t used the drive as much as Samsung’s specs say would correlate. I bought the 850X but haven’t installed it yet and still considering the 990 Pro.
You should use RAM Disk to improve the durability of any SSD disk. Move the temp folder of Windows and chrome or firefox to the RAM Disk.
Which of the 2 would be cooler and will be installed on a laptop?
Would it be better to buy 1 TB for the operating system and 1 TB for file storage or just a 2 TB unit?
Your channel is very good!
I think Samsung is more hot but you must check the limits of each. I am not sure but Samsung can work good on higher temps. But search all these before choose. It is better to have 2 Disks than 1 i think...
Im looking for a 4Tb m2 which is best overall for gaming on pc and using programs like substance paint, photoshop, and some video editing?
The difference between these 2 is very small. WD launch new firmware yesterday so i must do a new test. But 4TB disks can have differences on hardware so i must test them first. If you ask me now, Samsung i will choose. Check also Seagate
@@pctechbuild40 I have Firecuda 540, which has 2 times better TBW, but they have now some supply storage and is much more expensive, so Samsung looks like good choice for me.
Do your 990 pro gets hot on normal use and gaming? I intend to get one for gaming but I'm afraid of it getting too hot in my laptop when I'm playing or just using the internet, for example
Not so much but this m2 has high temp limit
Did you check your temps?
@@pctechbuild40 I saw several tests, but most of them show temps when the device is pushed to its limit, not on everyday use. I read the review from Tom's Hardware also. But I ended up deciding to go with it and my 990 pro arrived yesterday, I didn't install it yet.
Thank you for helping me with this choice, man!
@@douglasmartins4688 ok great. Comment your experience! Remember that most of the times laptops have higher temps.
Now I have tested it well. No problems with heat. It stays 9 ~ 10°C above my gen 3 SSD, about 38 ~ 40°C. The laptop has a metal plate for heatsink, and its thermal pad doesn't cover the whole 990, only the controller, which is what generates more heat. Normal temps, no reason to worry
I've been looking for an ssd for my ps5 for a while now and the ssd shown are good, which one would you recommend?
I think both are good. Check this article www.tomshardware.com/best-picks/best-ps5-ssds
i wonder how these SSDs perform, when they are filled with 3TB of data already. I got some M.2 from other brands and they perform very well, but if i put 3TB data on them, the performance massively drops.
I think all ssd drop performance under these conditions but i never tested seagate firecuda. It is one of the best and corsair also.
Hello, which one do you think is better?
Sn850p ?
Sn850x ?
Thank you...
SN850X for sure th-cam.com/video/LMs4GWAalpI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=C_e8eVaCfh1RioUS
would you be able to tell a noticeable difference with your eyes from either SSD? the 990 pro 4TB price is fluctuating like crazy and I just want a super nice NVMe
I just tested 1Tb. From tests results and everyday use i choose Samsung. Check the description i wrote some things
BEWARE BUYERS:
If you have a 2023 Rog Zephyrus, particularly the M16... these are incredibly finicky with 990 pro. It's been a common problem. Windows wont acknowledge it's there even though its discoverable in the BIOS. Tried a dozen different solutions... some more useful than others... but its still finicky at best. Bite the bullet and go for the 850x if you have this laptop.
i have 1 tb of each, which woupd ypu use for os ?
It depends... sometimes is about luck but i replace wd with samsung for os and it is working better
OS always on a Samsung and everything else on the WD personally.
@@pctechbuild40thanks thats was the idea, ill use the 1tb 990 pro for os and programs and 2tb 850 for games, sounds like the best bet
@@inguspodnieks5040yes I will you it like that too 2tb 990 pro for os and 4tb 850x for games
@@thames6897what if I get the 990 pro for both is & games ? less drives are better for the cpu.
ontop of that my mother board only has one 4.0 lane. the other lane is 3.0.
would you suggest putting games on a 3.0 lane or 4.0 ?
990 pro primary and 850x for secondary good pairing?
Yes that is what i did!
@@pctechbuild40 mine is reverse 😂
Which has better temperatures?
I think samsung but important think is where the m2 installed.
Samsung 990 Pro M.2 4TB for 410€ or Western Digital Black SN850X M.2 4TB for 330€?
So big difference? This is difficult.. i think WD
@@pctechbuild40 now the difference is $30 USD with Samsung being $319 USD
@@x-ray3431 i check and i found what you say. Samsung 20 euros more expensive!
I can get a discount so the Samsung 4TB is 330€ and the WD 850 is 280€.Which is the best for a content creation, mostly video edition pc + gaming?@@pctechbuild40
It's 50€ for me. Will I notice any difference? I mean they are both super fast@@pctechbuild40
Am I dumb if I'm leaning more towards the SN850x ?
I know that the 990 Pro is faster but the difference ain't that much and after all the BS I've been reading and hearing about Samsung I'm starting to think the SN850x might be a wiser choice ??
Anyone???
Sometimes is about luck. I think both of them are so close. In my case WD in 1 month use lost 1% of health. It is possible to not lose any % after 10 years and Samsung damage in the same period but can happen the opposite. These 2 are very close
I’m in the same boat as you. I bought a SN850X but still considering the 990 Pro. The Samsung degradation issues are concerning. Mine will be a primary OS drive and my most played games. I think both of them are so damn close in performance that you would never notice a difference. So with that said, my train of thought is maybe the smartest thing to base this on is reliability / durability which right now in my eyes points towards Western Digital.
hi guys, did you have news from the ssd life problem with 980 and 990 pro ? Is it solved ? thanks for infos
Hi my friend. i don't think 990 pro is same as 980 pro. The 990 pro i think has no life problem. Check this www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-990-pro-ssd-review/2
My 980 pro failed within 2 months and the replacment was DOA. Samsung is pathetic, never gonna Recommed Samsung SSD to anyone.
@@Theking-vk9vj 980 pro is not so good in quality and life like 970 pro or 990 pro.
The Samsung 990 Pro 100% had concerns about degradation. No one knows if it’s accurate or an issue in the software reporting, the hardware, etc. However the health matches across the entire suite of drive software so it does seem like it’s an accurate health.
I have the 2tb 990 pro and it’s taking an hour to download Spider-Man 2 on ps5.
That's very strange 🤔
@@x-ray3431 maybe took 2hrs because my WiFi went out (xfinity) in the middle of the download smh. I’m almost done with the game though I’m around 90% complete.
@@ritzkola2302 download speeds have nothing to do with your ssd...
Sn850x is better for gaming, Samsung 990 pro for everything else
I am not sure so this can be true. I didn't make test on gaming
@@pctechbuild40 when I was in the market for a ssd for my PS5, I saw an article that did various testing, and found out that sn850x has much faster loading, processing, and rendering when it comes to gaming, but the 990 is much more consistent
Lol hard driives don't make games have better graphics, they just help store and load data
@Keyframe5 don't think I said anything bout graphics. I read in a source that sn850x has a faster loading, processing, and rendering when it comes to gaming. TH-cam keeps deleting my comment when I put the URL of my source but search it in google
@@Keyframe5 Better graphics not but they help for speed loading
