I discovered this channel recently and am legitimately amazed at the quality of the videos. Not just the visual side of presenting the products cleanly and clearly, but also the actual points covered in the reviews that really matter to the audience. Always love to see real-world differences given emphasis over many benchmark numbers that make nice graphs but often don't tell the user what difference in actual use it will make. I would love to see how many seconds the fastest drives launch games in comparison with each other or budget options. If the differences are miniscule across the board, that is still very important information that should be shown to the consumers who will then be able to better decide how to spend their money.
I appreciate highlighting the drives you are referring to. It makes things easier to follow without having to pause the vid and search the graphs. As usual for TechTesters, a concise yet thorough review. 👍 Thank you!
Great video, really does some nice training on SSD basics. Percentages seem to be tricky on SSD measurements. I've seen other sites where 20% improvements is actually only a second or 2. These real numbers are much more informative when seeing test results. THANKS!!
Yeah it's a difficult subject like that. SSD speeds are only a small part of most workloads so usually as long as you're in a particular tier you won't notice much of a difference. Expect me to summarize it more easily in the upcoming roundup update ;)
That is my problem with percents. Like you referred, a 20% difference could be a few seconds or a few frames in a game. 20% is easy to stomach spending more for performance but when you say that new hardware only gets you 3 seconds faster loading or 10 more frames in a game you start feeling like tool if you upgrade then.
Thank you for explaining each benchmark test! Makes it super easy to understand in which situation a drive perform better or not! Also thanks the the quick mention of the PS5 usability!
I legit just ordered a 2TB model of the SN850X for a friend of mine to put into his PS5. Was quite a bit cheaper ($350ish AUD) than purchasing a Samsung SSD (Over $400AUD) down here in Australia. Great review & video as always! Keep up the excellent work!!
Excellent timing! I am putting together a parts list/build for my new holiday gift to myself and this pointed me in the right direction for my storage needs!!! This is the best channel for information and you are the best presenter. Fortis Mane!
Thank you for an excellent video. I have the 2 Tb, heatsink version of this device. I really appreciate your thoughts and the tests you put the drive through.
From your fine review of the WD Black SN850X, I ordered a 2tb model. My main computer has a WD Black SN750, and it has been excellent, so I figured I'd stick with WD again. The only other SSD I would consider is Kingston Fury Renegade because I've had great experiences with Kingston memory and SSD's.
🔥💯but tbh Samsung 990 pro really raised the bar for Gen 4 SSD’s but the WD Black SN 850X is looking fire too tho. But in game transfer speed damn the WD SN 850X is just mind blowing😱

Thanks for the great video review - very nice analysis. I just picked up a 2TB WD Black SN850X SSD from the WD site for $169. In a Thunderbolt 3 / 4 housing with my Mac Studio I'm getting great read & write speeds 2800+ / 2700+ on Black Magic disk speed test. Great bang for the buck! Running nice and cool so far...
thanks for this, great vid as always. I had no idea about the WD dashboard program, amazing timing; I was literally just wondering how my now 4 year old WD drive is holding up. 95% life remaining :) Thank you!!!
So happy I found your channel. I have loved the new tech (CPU, GPU etc) reviews in the last month or so. So many items that I was thinking I hope she covers that, and you do! Great channel!
Thanks. These videos are great! :) Just bought the 4TB version of this drive directly from Western Digital which just dropped the price today to $299.99. Plus I received another 16.5% discount from a coupon site and a 15% discount for being a student. Saved $94.50 even after the price drop. Looking forward to using it. :)
Nice, that's a good deal for 4tb with the discounts. I'll have to look into the student discounts but i'm going to either wait until Prime day or Black Friday to snag the best deal.
Keep in mind that you cannot compare the performance of a 1 TB drive with a 2 TB drive, just by the way SSD's work. Compare 1 TB drives with each other and 2 TB drives with each other. More important though is if a drive uses DDR cache or not. The more DDR cache the better the performance when working with large files/ video editing. See the performance between the Samsung 990 Pro 1 TB ( 1 GB chache ) and the 2 TB ( 2 GB cache ) for example. Most users do not use their computer for this. Or at least not very often.
for primarily gaming and streaming what SSD would you recommend? I was looking at the samsung 990 pro and SN850x, but open to anything. Was looking at the 4tb version. I will be editing videos later down the road. Computer will be primairly used for gaming, steaming, internet searches, emails (the typical computer stuff), etc.

Thank you for this! i've decided to grab the WD 850X 1Tb & 2TB since it's hard to find the kc3000 & other cheaper ones in my country area. will install OS on 1TB & Gaming+Application on the 2TB. with the max speed 7.3Gbps it really shine!
Great video, I came for a tutorial on what software to use to customize the ssd. But was overwhelmed with a lot of great information about this SSD I hadn’t known before. Great video!
I was unaware WD_Black had a dashboard. I wasn’t too happy with the default LED color and it didn’t go with my PC’s theme. After watching your vid my problem is solved, thanks.
I'll stick with my 1Tb KC3000 as my main/boot drive, but looking to replace another 1Tb A2000 as secondary. Good to see these benches, thank you for all the effort you put into these videos!
Best reviewer ever. Although I prefer Samsung. Never had a problem with them, but I have with WD and Micron drives I had to return to Amazon. You LOVE those Seasonic power suppliers. I used them back in the mid 90s in my CAD machine builds, when we picked them out of a page in a computer catalogue. Remeber those? 2nd comment. So close to first.
I used to pick up a massive issue of Computer Shopper every time I went to Fry's, and then spend like a week reading through it, always being amazed at how the hard drive prices had dropped since the previous year.
I'm happy with my 980 Pro 1Tb (OS drive) and KC3000 2TB (game library). All the best PCIE Gen 4 SSD's have pretty much already reached the max potential. Any more improvements are fairly small and insignificant in my opinion. People looking for genuinely faster drives will have to wait for Gen 5.
Like others I have just discovered your channel and am impressed with the couple of videos I've watched so far. Keep up the great work and looking forward to your new content this year.
I got one, and for heat, it should probably be pointed out, on a Gen3 board, stress testing heat on mine WITH NO HEATSINK didnt crack 45*, and file transfers and other real world uses I tried on it didnt even go over 39*. Yes, it's not running at full speed but thought it relevant since if you're not pushing those 7500 speeds on a benchmark I doubt itll get very hot in normal use. Mine is no hotter than my OS SN770 drive w/ heatsink.
Another great review. I bought two SN850 with Heatsink last year (a 1TB for my PS5 and a 2TB for my PC). Pretty good drives that I will keep using for the time being.

Thank you for your extensive ssd reviews! I've been looking for benchmarks to look at for them, and these are very helpful! Would you be able to review the SK Hynix Platinum P41 next?
I just ordered a Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB for my PS5 since it was significantly cheaper. I've seen performance comparison vidoes of it and looks like it performs a little behind against with WD Sn850 and Samsung 980 Pro. Even though in papers, it should be faster hence there's 850x and Samsung 990. Not a techy guy but I hope I made a correct decision.
Damn, so it's actually a better gaming SSD than the 990 PRO. Still, those IOPS speeds for daily use are a bit better on 990 PRO. (5:00) Unless the 990 PRO isn't much more expensive, I'd actually recommend getting that one. Today, they are basically the same price.
great review Nada, thanks! it was a tad later than hoped, but glad to see my purchase of 2x2TB models arriving tomorrow was not a bad call ;D side note, that ring on your index finger looks really nice on your pretty hands :) TYVM!
Fantastic succinct and concise review, Nada. Would it be possible to include RAID array testing for the NVMe M.2 SSD, or do manufacturers only send out one drive for review?
Just bought 2 of these 1TB versions on sale for $54.00 ea. I'm thinking a $109 2TB raid 0 is pretty hard to argue with, but either way it was a super cheap option to get my new system up and running while we all wait for gen 5 prices to fall. Cheers 🍻
You're such a good channel, subscribed! 😊 I'm currently building a new PC and already have received a 4TB WD Black SN850X as a gaming drive and a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro for my OS. Looks like a fast combination together with Core i9-13900KF! 😃🚀
Damn, I did extremely good choices. Main drive the SN850X and Storage drive the SN770 despite the latter being DRAM-less, it's extremely good and responsive. It's all 90% of the users should care since we don't copy large files continuously. Once we install our games and that's it. Both 1TB each costed 160€. Good price. The NAND work extremely cool, the controllers get a little hot up to 60C when you play games but still too well. Previously I've had 2 970EVO Plus, both unlucky, both broke extremely fast. Then the 980PRO while I felt victim of the firmware problem no matter what, I did the update relatively fast, the disk locked for good. I was avid Samsung enjoyer since my first 830 and kept buying 'em all, 840, 850, 860 and the 970 and lastly 980PRO. Now I was thinking for the 990PRO but I'm a bit afraid while it was costing 40€ more.
Just bought a 4tb SN850x for VST Plugins for $360 during Cyber Monday. I have a barley used 970 Pro 512GB for a Cache Drive, now I'm trying to figure out the best drive for editing. I'm waiting on the Gen 5 drives for my OS. Building my next PC next month so hopefully they'll be out by then.
Great and detailed reviews! Subbed. I actually just purchased the Corsair mp600 pro LPX 1TB at $70 for my ps5 but haven't installed it, and now the sn850x is also on sale for the same price. I was heavily considering returning the corsair and getting this but after looking at the stress test results and temp readings, I think I'll stick with the corsair since I don't have the best ventilation around my ps5 and I feel like those two readings are an indication of durability? This WD is prob faster but I don't think I'll see that much of a diff in a PS5 if at all. Is all this correct? Basically, I'm asking, for the same price, which is the better buy for a ps5? Thank you!!
Lovely as always clear concice and on the point , for SSD add latency checks and bench maybe that's explain why this one is better than the concurrency at games
Do PCIE 4 SSDs idle or run (while gaming) at much hotter temperatures than PCIE 3? I'm wondering if upgrading to a PCIE 4.0 SSD would increase my case temperature.
I bought 850x 1TB and put it in my polymega and it does improve the load times of the 4th and 5th generation of consoles im happy with it but it does overheat cause i dont have a heatsink but ive elevated my console off the table with a wire basket and it doesn't overheat as much
Maybe you can test Kingston Fury Renegade SSD. The new ones with heatspreader in specs seem to be faster than the ones with same name without heatspreader. Maybe something interesting for a video.
The comparisons are not fair, you expose a WD Black 850X of 1 TB against a Samsumg 990 Pro of 2 TB It is known that 2 TB SSDs have better performance statistics compared to 1 TB SSDs. Although the information you give is indicative, it is not entirely correct, both in comparing 1 TB SSD versus 2 TB SSDs in both the WD 850X model and the other brands.
Samsung 990 PRO is still the king of pcie 4 ssds. Huge random read/write speeds make it the most balanced one for working with both large and small files
Great job as always, I want to buy a good ssd and I hesitate between the kc3000 and the sn850x for gaming, what do you think? greetings from canary islands
Again, great review as always. I love your work. I’ll probably stick to the 2TB 990 Pro anyway and waiting for the 4TB. In Portugal the WD is costing more than 300€. It’s more expensive than the 990 Pro.
@@MasteRij0 Well, I've searched on PCDIGA@ before you even commented. They did not have on stock and this store tend to overpriced everything. It's not my favourite store to buy components or anything at all. So, thank you for your comment.

Hello friend, how are you? I have the same ssd, but it is the WD SN850X, I use it on an Asrock x570 Steel Legend motherboard, but in the Dashboard app in the "INTERFACE SPEED" part shows Interface speed Capacity: Gen4 (4 Lanes) Connection: Gen4 (2 Lanes) instead of “(4 Lanes)” I also use the SN750se, and this one shows Interface speed Capacity: Gen4 (4 Lanes) Connection: Gen4 (4 lanes) It's correct as it shows in your app as well. This sn850x I'm using is like this, and the speed also doesn't go more than 3600 mb/s And yours that is practically the same model, is correct, (4 Lanes) and the speed almost 7000 mb/s. What can it be?
So what I’m taking away from this video is the 2TB SN850x ssd is the best for gaming over everything else within its category and the Samsung 990 Pro ssd is the best for your (OS) Operating System for pc booting over everything else within its category correct???😊 Thanks for awesome videos, you’re the best.
I'd say the differences are small enough that it doesn't matter nearly as much as the price. But SN850x for gaming, 990 for high-end productivity. But with some of the reported 990 issues it might be worth waiting with that one
@@TechTesters Samsung disabled drive health percentage statistics in their latest Magitian fotware, why do you think that is? But they promise a new firmware update by the end of the month.
Great coverage, but you're comparing 1tb SN850X versus 2tb 990pro ??? For sure the 2 TB version of the WD will perform better ... not sure if your comparison here is relevant.
The 990 pro was SUPPOSED to come out yesterday. I was there the second they sent me an email saying it was available but it was.... never available..... not for a split second...
got myself a 2tb and 2 4tb sn850x's and couldnt be happier. 10TB of storage is a neccesity in 2023 and 2024+ games are only going to get bigger and more demanding.
Awesome review! Too bad the 2TB version wasn't tested or the 1TB 990 Pro for a more apples to apples comparison. Keep up the much appreciated product reviews!
Why does the SN770 (being DRAM-less) seems like it's better than the SN850 in some tests? I love this channel btw! You really established your own identity throughout the Tech TH-camrs spectrum. Sorry for the late comment as I just randomly rewatch videos.
Still something i want to follow up on actually, but haven’t had the time. The sn770 uses the system dram as cache, so it really seems to benefit from a fast 13900k/ddr5 testbench. Needs some more testing to see if and when a dramless drive might actually benefit you.
I almost thought this video would never get posted. I bought three for my new rig, three weeks ago. Bought a 2TB version for OS and secondary. Flash sale, under $200, USD. For gaming, it looks like it's still the king.
I was able to get a 2tb for almost half off. It was between the P5 Plus 2tb at $150 vs the SN850X 2tb at $170. So I went with the WD to game, and maybe dip my toes into streaming.
i think its really refreshing when something is marketed for a certain purpose its actually better doing that instead of just being lies, but maybe thats just me :D

great review Nada, thanks! it was a tad later than hoped, but glad to see my purchase of 2x2TB models arriving tomorrow was not a bad call ;D side note, that ring on your index finger looks really nice on your pretty hands :) TYVM!
50% off on WD's website if you need more
Fantastic succinct and concise review, Nada. Would it be possible to include RAID array testing for the NVMe M.2 SSD, or do manufacturers only send out one drive for review?
Thanks! And yeah I don't have usually duplicates, not at launch anyway.
@@TechTesters So basically for gaming the WD SN850x. And for productivity Samsung 990 Pro. Trying to decide which one to get.
nice to see all compared thanks
Thank you for the great review, Nada! 👍
My pleasure 😊
Just bought 2 of these 1TB versions on sale for $54.00 ea. I'm thinking a $109 2TB raid 0 is pretty hard to argue with, but either way it was a super cheap option to get my new system up and running while we all wait for gen 5 prices to fall. Cheers 🍻
You're such a good channel, subscribed! 😊
I'm currently building a new PC and already have received a 4TB WD Black SN850X as a gaming drive and a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro for my OS.
Thanks a lot, your reviews are amazing !
The reviewer everyone loves, and my favorite, SSD reviews.😍😍😍
Thank you!!
I personally wouldn’t bother changing it.
But at the exact same price and for gaming use only id say buy the wd if you havent bought anything yet
Lovely as always clear concice and on the point , for SSD add latency checks and bench maybe that's explain why this one is better than the concurrency at games
SN850X or KC3000 or Kingston Fury Renegade at 2tb?
Mine (2TB) just got delivered today. Bought it because of the issues folks are seeing with Samsung SSDs lately.
I just upgraded my laptop ssd to this and loving it.
did you had a room for a heatsink? if not, do you get any thermal throttling?
Why it has already 98% life remaining ? Only from your tests ? Great review !
I would like to know how many terabytes he wrote
Just got the 4TB for $400 after taxes, still expensive but it is a great deal for this drive. 😁
With your 990 Pro, did you have the one with a heatsink or not?
I have one. It’s amazing the load times can’t get much faster.
The comparisons are not fair, you expose a WD Black 850X of 1 TB against a Samsumg 990 Pro of 2 TB
It is known that 2 TB SSDs have better performance statistics compared to 1 TB SSDs.
Although the information you give is indicative, it is not entirely correct, both in comparing 1 TB SSD versus 2 TB SSDs in both the WD 850X model and the other brands.
Check the link in the description as well :)
YOU GIVE THE BEST REVIEWS...
The best is Kingston KC3000
Samsung 990 PRO is still the king of pcie 4 ssds. Huge random read/write speeds make it the most balanced one for working with both large and small files
Great job as always, I want to buy a good ssd and I hesitate between the kc3000 and the sn850x for gaming, what do you think?
greetings from canary islands
Again, great review as always. I love your work. I’ll probably stick to the 2TB 990 Pro anyway and waiting for the 4TB. In Portugal the WD is costing more than 300€. It’s more expensive than the 990 Pro.
Thank you! And that makes sense!
Dude today the 850x 2TB is costing 150€ on your Dig@ store here at Portugal...
@@MasteRij0 Well, I've searched on PCDIGA@ before you even commented. They did not have on stock and this store tend to overpriced everything. It's not my favourite store to buy components or anything at all. So, thank you for your comment.
Great review like the rest of your reviews makes it easier to decide which to buy. P.S. Would you please kindly review the Gigabyte Aorus M.2 1TB NVME Gen4 7300 been searching around the net to no avail.
Hello friend, how are you? I have the same ssd, but it is the WD SN850X, I use it on an Asrock x570 Steel Legend motherboard, but in the Dashboard app in the "INTERFACE SPEED" part shows
Interface speed
Capacity:
Gen4 (4 Lanes)
Connection:
Gen4 (2 Lanes) instead of “(4 Lanes)”
I also use the SN750se, and this one shows
Interface speed
Capacity:
Gen4 (4 Lanes)
Connection:
Gen4 (4 lanes)
It's correct as it shows in your app as well.
This sn850x I'm using is like this, and the speed also doesn't go more than 3600 mb/s
And yours that is practically the same model, is correct, (4 Lanes) and the speed almost 7000 mb/s.
Thanks! I have a seperate video on the impact of capacity btw, that includes the 990 Pro 1TB :)
I just purchased an SN850X and dying to try it. Unfortunately I have to wait until December 13th for the AMD 7900xtx.
Christmas sales?
@@boboboy8189 December 13th is release date.
Noted! Thanks
I almost thought this video would never get posted. I bought three for my new rig, three weeks ago.
Bought a 2TB version for OS and secondary. Flash sale, under $200, USD.
For gaming, it looks like it's still the king.
if you're a gamer, sn850x. if you're a content creator, the 990 pro.
I was able to get a 2tb for almost half off. It was between the P5 Plus 2tb at $150 vs the SN850X 2tb at $170. So I went with the WD to game, and maybe dip my toes into streaming.
That's a pretty good price! Enjoy.
@@TechTesters It's hard to get out of the mindset of "$20 is $20 though."
im in same dillema p5 plus , 850x or 980 pro
i think its really refreshing when something is marketed for a certain purpose its actually better doing that instead of just being lies, but maybe thats just me :D
