    Tristan, we love watching the SYC videos. I spent many good years in the South of France in the 80's (admittedly on refits on motor yachts, not crewing) but seeing what you do brings back great memories. Nothing changes, in a way, down there, apart from we used to have to occasionally run (sail) away from the French authorities when you didn't have a Green Card to work!
    If you ever come across MY Moonmaiden II, a.k.a MY Trafalgar on your travels down there, please give a nod to her. Gorgeous boat, although a bit old now. Did the refit in 1985 in Cap d'Ail and we had a hell of a time on her and in the bars around there (back when Flashman's was a bar). Fair winds to you all.
    Subbed and voted.
    Moosey

    One can SEE the importance of your 10-year when it comes to tending to the anchor locker and painting the shackle length colors. Easily visible as they fly round the windlass. A steady hand and watchful eye are shown. No room for loose clothing on a deck. Although your clothing looks sharp, it also serves a purpose in being safe to wear around moving parts. Thank you.

  • @frankcromer6945
    @frankcromer6945 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Perhaps you should have mentioned, that. Once the anchor is on the sea bed. You put the ships engine into astern. So you don't pile the anchor chain on top of its self, but spread it along the sea bed in line with the wind direction. And for course, help dig it in or 'set it'?

    • @perrooceaniko2005
      @perrooceaniko2005 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You dont need much to help the anchor to dig (or set) on this league of yachts. Just a minimum momentum will do the trick. Do not allow the chain to pile over the anchor is of paramount importance, indeed ..... Very good your comment. Your are a smart skipper. .😊😊

    Interesting. Not much different from anchoring my 45 foot rowing boat but you want to be damn sure the anchor isn't dragging with such a yacht! What ratio depth/chain do you use in under normal conditions? Are you backing up when releasing the anchor so that the chain isn't piling up at the bottom? ok, just saw somebody asking the same...

    Hi Tristan. I saw you in a bar in Monaco with the tomandjoeshow a couple of days ago. Anyways, was wondering how you decide which anchor to use. Presumably when stern to it depends on the wind direction, but when free swinging, does it matter, or is it just whichever you like? Cheers, Tommy.

      @perrooceaniko2005 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperYachtCaptain hahaha ...
      I was about to ask that .... if you release the chain stationary over the same spot, chances are the chain get tangled with the flukes of the anchor and them you have a big, useless ton of metal that can be a real problem for the crew. Very good question.

    • @perrooceaniko2005
      @perrooceaniko2005 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I dont let the half but very slowly start to move from the beginning to allow the chain lay down in a orderly fashion on the bottom of the ocean. Very slowly. And just for few seconds. Then stop and the momentum takes care of the rest.

    Idea's for topics in coming video's:
    explain the different roles on board (e.g. barbara's role as the chief vs a deck hand)
    let us meet the rest of the crew (and their roles)
    How do you find your clients and has social media a part in that
    How much time do you need between 2 clients to clean and prepare the ship for coming trip
    How do you do your shopping (not only groceries but also cleaning stuff etc) That must be impressive for one week and supermarkets often are not in a port
    Does your clients choose where to go (considering the arrival of the next clients)

    It's hard to get past the phrase "super yacht". It seems to be a phrase meant to feed an ego rather than describe an actual physical attribute. Yet, the behavior of you & the crew does not seem ego driven. Making the name seem even more disconnected from the actual content. Seems there is likely a more specific term to describe the type of ship being sailed. Motor Yacht Class XX or something similar.

    Something that simple but is not, at least for me, is to estimate the area or ring necessary to allow the ship to swing around the anchor. This is not a Boston whaler. When you get a congested harbor ,it is a main concern to me. Electronic help is important once on anchor to make sure you are within the safe area . Also others boats are a mess, as they dont pay attention if they are dragging or moving off their limits. Sometimes others are the big problem at anchor time.

    It is important for new M/Y owners/captains, to take the rules with a grain of salt and think critically.
    What you really want, is that the chain 5-10 meters away of the anchor is still touching the seabed. If not, there is a chance that a gust of wind will lift the anchor and then you drag anchor.
    In shallow waters, say 3 meters deep, the 5X rule may not be good enough...
    Modern 60ft M/Y have a flybridge, probably a permanent canopy on the flybridge, and have lots of windage. If you pay out 15 meters of 12 mm chain, the weight of this chain is max 50-55 kilos. High windage boats will easily pull up 55 kilos of chain (and subsequently unsettle the anchor) in a force 5-6 situation. In this case, if I have the radius I would pay out probably 40 meters of chain, or chose to go deeper, which usually means further away from the shore. But first priority is safety, not the convenience of being close to the beach.
    It is always safer, if there is a possibility of attaching a line, or even better, two lines to the shore, because then you can pay out lots of chain without worrying about running into other anchored boats.

      If I heard it well in the video, 1 shackle is 27 meter. So, four shackles means ab. 100 meter of anchor-chain to be dropped into the water.
