It is accurate to say that I have watched a lot if not most reviews of the Pixel 4a 5g and certainly this is one of the most helpful ones, perhaps the best of the whole lot. You covered most everything well and fairly, and your presentation was concise with the right emphasis . I'll be checking out your other reviews.
I traded my Note 20 Ultra for this Phone, never regret a bit. The battery life is phenomenal. The only really negative knock on this phone is the screen outside with direct sun light. My favorite Pixel
@@shagrabs Oh wow was it? As decent as my Note 10's battery life was, so far this Pixel is killing it! My normal day's use would usually be at 15% battery life remaining by bed time on my Note 10, whereas so far the Pixel with roughly the same usage is around 30% at bedtime.
I got mine on December 30th, and I love it. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks that I've had it. As I type this I am charging it for only the 4th time since I've had it. I'm a fairly light user with 1-2 hours screen time per day, and on this last charge I got over 4 days, and still had 34% left. Amazing!

Thanks for the review. It is now day two with my Pixel 4A 5G and in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, we have a good 5G service with 368Mbps Down and 68Mbps Up. Loving the clean Android experience too.
Love my Pixel 4 5g. Haven't got to use the 5g yet. Honestly, I was surprised how well this phone works for its price. It's smooth and reliable. No software/hardware issues so far. Battery always lasts me a day, often with 30-40% at the end of a day. Camera isn't bad like a lot of reviewers make it out to be. Works very well with bluetooth devices. Definitely worth more than what it's priced imo.
I've only had my pixel 4a 5g a few days but it does have a very smooth feel to it and loads fast n runs everything so far with no hiccups ...thanks for the video and your knowledge of the phone 🙂
I've had this phone for about 3 months now, and I've had no problems with it. The only thing that kinda bugs me was the auto rotation as it seemed to be too sensitive. The pics are awesome and having the headphone jack was a buying point for me. The audio isn't bad at all (coming from a LG loyalist with their DAC) and I do love the 4a5G's medium size. I'm running Android 12 as of a few weeks ago and aside from the inability to change the clock format on the lock screen, I'm very pleased with this budget phone. Thanx for your straight forward review. 👍
Very well done video review. I recently picked up this phone to replace my 5-year old LG G4 phone, and so far I really like it. The old phone was great but not able to handle some newer apps.
Nice and realistic video mate ! Just got a 4a/5G for over a week now, man did I need to get used to it after being a Samsung owner for all my entire mobile phone life, wanted to change it again for a Samsung..but in the store I did found out, that a 120Hz Samsung is just as smooth imo as a 4A/5G, the other thing is the camera the colours are way more natural then the over/saturated Samsung sauce. Battery life is amazing, 8 to 9 maybe 10 hours SOT is normal, usage email/social media, chatting and taking pictures my only complained so far that I do find it a pity that, Google doesn't use the full screen of the device to take pictures it's more or less a 4.3 ratio that's imo a missed opportunity.
Nothing worse then when you owe yourself money and you won't even pick up your own call 🤣 great video mate, really enjoy watch your latest content. Happy New Year and all the best 😀

Just ordered my 4a5G yesterday directly from Google. My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8+. Still running okay but battery life is only good for 5 or 6 hrs and that's with medium battery saving power mode activated. I just felt it was time for new a phone and honestly, I just didn't want to go premium and spend big bucks on another Samsung. My first Android phone was a Nexus Google phone 4 or 5 years ago and it was a good phone so returning to stock Android again for its simplicity and value. I was torn between 4a5G and Pixel 5, but after watching many Vloggers complain about the poor sound on the Pixel 5, that sealed the deal for me. Wireless charging and water resistance are nice to have but not essential. Even the fact that the body of the Pixel 5 is made of aluminum vs durable plastic on the 4a5G. I also like the fact that on the 4a5G, you can still use a headphone jack. Plus the screen is slightly larger which means you are getting more screen real estate and for less cost. Cameras are identical. Battery life is about as good in the 4a5G as it is in the Pixel 5. Brightness outdoors is my only concern now but what do you expect for a mid-range priced phone?
Glad you're enjoying your new phone. My sister also got a 4a to replace her Galaxy S8 and only misses the expandable storage. Photos of my niece are much nicer now. 😉

Greetings from the Philippines. Hello sir, I am on a tight budget and would want to purchase this phone. Can you please kindly advise the battery performance in Android 13. Thank you so much. - Cris
thanks for the great review! I want to ask, why are some pixel 4a5g marked with the words "Made in Vietnam" on the bottom of the back, but some do not?
I'm a bit late to the 4a 5G party, but it still has software updates until 2023, and mine arrives on Tuesday. I can't wait! I got it for a streal at $145!
This comment is a little late, but I hate my 4a5g. The default volume adjustment is media, not ringer, which makes no sense at all - even when no media is playing. If often doesn't wake when I touch the screen or pick it up. Swiping up to switch apps and close apps is touchy and awkward and usually skips over the app I want to select. The brightness auto-adjust sometimes goes completely off the rails. I have to restart the phone every few days because notifications stop coming through, or I call and can't hear anyone or one specific person's text notifications don't come through. But the #1 despised feature is Google support. There isn't any. There is someone who will argue with you over messages or email, but no support. Google doesn't do anything wrong, so if you suspect they made a mistake - think again. Oh, also the sound volume is really low and it doesn't like you turning it up as far as it can go - you have to do this in the settings every time you want it louder. Kinda hate my Pixel.
@@GrantLikesTech eventho being a somewhat competitive gamer I have to say I barely see the difference between 90hz and 60hz displays. But I hear that from a lot of people, and the battery isnt affected too bad, bad boy lasts me longer and longer :)
Main points for the 5 were for me: size (cutout cardboard to compare the sizes, really helped me) and a little bit more battery (together with smaller display can add).
I have it for about a week now, i am coming from Huawei p20 pro,and the pixel is better at every way, except one the video calls with Viber the picture is extremely saturated and bad, i wish they fix that .
@@GrantLikesTech Yes you are right. Its terrible even with Whatsapp. I use Whatsapp video calls more often and this is a pain. I am about to return this item now
Did they fix the gesture issue they had on the pixel 4xl on this phone? Where if the phone is in landscape mode the icons right at the bottom right of the phone won't press unless you swipe up once first. This was mainly a issue when playing games you can fix this by using 3 button navigation but then you have increased chance of screen burn as you can't hide the bar when your not using it like you can on some phones.
@@varshilmehta99 then nothing will beat this phone at its price or even better if you could've gotten it on sale. Got mine when it was on sale from Google Fi for $350.

Very informative. I am 66 years old and a fairly average phone user. I have a Galaxy S9 and someone recmmended replaing it with the 4a 5G.What will I miss most or be disappointed in if I buy the 4a 5G? Thanks
Thanks, what do you like most about your S9? You may miss the memory card storage expansion. My sister moved from an S8 and that was her only complaint.
I find these always interesting, but even more telling after 12 months. My pixel3a was okay when I got it, but after a year without adding more apps or having more background stuff going got really slow... Also the 4a5g is imho basicly the 5a, I find it funny that they went with 4a5g^^ To display, I tend to shy away from anything thats not oled, simply because dark mode and battery life.
Thanks for chiming in. That's what I see others say about their older Pixels. I haven't experienced that, but honestly I can't always be using the same device that long. I like going back to using them, but not continuously. I don't mind LCD displays if they're good. They can look very nice with cooler color temps and don't need to worry about dark mode all the time is refreshing.
@@GrantLikesTech yeh thats why I went with the 5 over 4a5g (the premium version basicly). just a tad more ram, so I hope this doesnt become an issue, but I'll see. Thankfully I dont need to customize much on pixel phones so if its again a problem I can reset it without too much effort. To displays; I personally prefer dark mode, and getting longer SoTs because of it is nice. Quality for me isnt a big deal, but thats different for everyone :) On another note, I really do appreciate the size of the phones. The 4a5g is a little bit wider thus fills up the screen more when watching videos afaik, whats your take on that?
@@wade_county true, also for battery life improvements. Disabled it right at the start and the p3a actually lasted me sometimes for 2 days which is really nice. I think the idea behind it is nice but the implementation just had lots of drawbacks. Good advice ;)

I will never buy another Pixel again. In 3 months I had to return a phone with speaker issues and now the other Pixel phone they sent me is having issues with the charging port.
4a 5g owner, upgraded from Pixel 2 XL. Poor stereo speaker sound. Camera hardware dated, but software compensates. Phone feels cheap. Screen flip is slow as is Android Auto connection. Battery life similar to my 3yr old phone. I chose the 4a 5g over the 4a and 5 due to larger screen size. Feels less like an upgrade and more like I bought a $150 phone with stock Android.
I love the pixel 4xl so I can imagine how well optimized this thing is. I shoot all my vids now on the pixel 4xl. I'm thinking the 6 series will be absolutely ridiculous amazing.
I have had some small issues with the screen no being responsive at the bottom. It happened a few times last week or so. Buy not last couple days. So idk. It's a issue tho
Have this phone and I have a question, why when watching Hulu, prime, and hbo max does the screen not allow full screen to be utilized, such a waste of screen.
@@GrantLikesTech I've tried everything 😑 and when I try to retrain voice it says Trouble Connecting check your connection and try again🤦. Everything is switched on. Since my last update it has not been working.
Has anybody mentioned the water and moisture flaw'? My 4a is rain dead. Slight moisture killed it. Not water resistant like iphone. That's why it is only $500
For most people that is not an important feature. I have had water resistance in my last 3 phones. You know what? Never use it. I don't use my phone under the shower. And believe me, that feature is not for free, so if you don't need it, better not paying for that, right?
Orlando, I feel negated by your response and wonder If you work for google. I wrote "slight moisture". Anyway, I am attempting to return it for warrentee work, but had to buy a new phone in the mean time.
@@brownkk1326 No, I don't work for Google. Not all people that write good reviews about Pixels work for Google. It's a comment based in my experience with a lot of brands. iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, Sony and Pixels. None of them is perfect but I prefer the Pixel experience. And I believe the water resistance you get is proportional to rhe amount of money you pay. To me that's not important at all. Just buy the phone you want and be happy.
Don't buy a Pixel! I bought a 4 XL and the thing is garbage! It reboots constantly and Google's support is AT&T bad. My only repair option is to mail it off for 10 days. Don't buy a Pixel.
@@GrantLikesTech It's a pretty common issue. They've actually extended the warranty another year on the 4XL for rebooting and freezing issues.
Is there any heating issue with pixel 4a 5g?
Great review @Grant S. Makes me question my choice to buy the pixel 5 over the 4a 5G
Nah, Pixel 5 is great. 4a or 4a a5G are smart choices, but I like the 5. That 90Hz surprisingly makes more of a difference than I thought.
@05:25 : The call screening demo is awesome. Really 100% good usage for the screening call.
Thanks! Glad you liked the demo.
I have it for about a week now, i am coming from Huawei p20 pro,and the pixel is better at every way, except one the video calls with Viber the picture is extremely saturated and bad, i wish they fix that .
They probably want you to use Duo 😉
@@GrantLikesTech Yes you are right. Its terrible even with Whatsapp. I use Whatsapp video calls more often and this is a pain. I am about to return this item now
Did they fix the gesture issue they had on the pixel 4xl on this phone?
Where if the phone is in landscape mode the icons right at the bottom right of the phone won't press unless you swipe up once first.
This was mainly a issue when playing games you can fix this by using 3 button navigation but then you have increased chance of screen burn as you can't hide the bar when your not using it like you can on some phones.
Not sure about the 4xl issue.
Excellent review
Thanks Ben, always appreciate you dropping by.
According to you which phone will be best to buy in terms of good camera requirement at the price?
If you don't need an ultra wide or telephoto, then the Pixel 4a.
@@GrantLikesTech I do need ulta wide then which except google phones will be better to buy?
iPhone 12 has a good ultra wide that now supports night mode like the Pixel .
@@GrantLikesTech Same price brother 😅
@@varshilmehta99 then nothing will beat this phone at its price or even better if you could've gotten it on sale. Got mine when it was on sale from Google Fi for $350.
What else does Grant like?
Very thorough and good review,
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Helo I live in Philippines and want know if it checks email fastly. Also I like Michael Jackson so is speakers good for Michael Jackson music like billy jene or triler. Thank you.
Excellent content!
Thank you!
Just got one, thanks for the review
Thanks, hope you enjoy it.
Does this have the Warm-Yellowish screen (when not in dark mode) ??
I returned my pix-4a for that reason. Sadly it didn't have settings for the Cooler /Warmer screen tones, as Samsung.
Really excellent video. Thanks.
You are welcome!
what do you say at 1:04 thru 1:06, and what does it mean?
No wireless-- or reverse-charging, and no face unlock
Will you get screen burn in if used on full brightness??
Anything is possible I guess, but I haven't had an issue.
Will I get screen burn If I use it on 75% brightness?
You’re in SF also . Dope 💯 I have the google pixel 4a 5G using it mostly Downtown area and it has pretty good 5G speeds and Coverage. I’m using my “Free Phone” SIM aka TracFone on T-Mobile tower and it’s works fine 💯 GREAT REVIEW ‼️👍🏾👌🏾 #BayArea
Thanks, much appreciated! My bad for not seeing this comment earlier since TH-cam held it for review for some reason.
Same problem I have. Doesn't want to rotate sometimes. Plus the heat management sucks.
I love my Pixel 4a 5G - But... The VPN connectivity issue is making my life nearly impossible to function during the day for work. Otherwise, it has been great!
The most issue with this phone for me as an user that it have reverse "button" at the left.
Is the camera is better than S20Fe 5g ???
See for yourself. Same cameras as Pixel 5:

dude just tell us if the image and the sound is good. i cant tell
Thinking about getting it just don't know if i should get tmobile version or unlock im hoping unlock gets all the 5g bands
If you do get one, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
another great review
Thanks again!
Is the call screening feature Free or Subscription?
Free, it's available on all Pixel phones from at least the Pixel 3. You just need to enable it in the phone app settings. It's off by default.
@@GrantLikesTech Very cool, I am still running my Galaxy S7. (but it is dying). I'm just wondering if this is comparable. Hoping to make the jump to 5G without paying.. a grand.
@@douglaskelley484 it's miles better than the S7. My wife had the S7 and I upgraded her to the Pixel 2 XL. She said she couldn't believe the difference. Now she has the 4a 5G and is very happy.
@@MichaelDetwiler noted, thanks for the input! Greatly appreciated
@1:35 would have been nice if you would have shown us the screen at 100% in different bright light conditions.
You said retails for $699 in the US I think you need to correct that because it’s $499
There's a big note on the screen saying $499. 😉
Unfortunately not available in India i hope pixel 5A 5G launch in India
I find these always interesting, but even more telling after 12 months.
My pixel3a was okay when I got it, but after a year without adding more apps or having more background stuff going got really slow...
Also the 4a5g is imho basicly the 5a, I find it funny that they went with 4a5g^^
To display, I tend to shy away from anything thats not oled, simply because dark mode and battery life.
I heard disabling digital well-being helps on the 3a
@@GrantLikesTech yeh thats why I went with the 5 over 4a5g (the premium version basicly). just a tad more ram, so I hope this doesnt become an issue, but I'll see.
Thankfully I dont need to customize much on pixel phones so if its again a problem I can reset it without too much effort.
To displays; I personally prefer dark mode, and getting longer SoTs because of it is nice. Quality for me isnt a big deal, but thats different for everyone :)
On another note, I really do appreciate the size of the phones.
@@wade_county how can i disable it. I can stop it, but after a Phone restart, its back on?
Is call recording available on pixel ?
Supposedly only in certain regions. Not here probably for legal reasons. There are 3rd party apps for this too.
support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/9803950?hl=en
I will never buy another Pixel again. In 3 months I had to return a phone with speaker issues and now the other Pixel phone they sent me is having issues with the charging port.
Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience and such poor luck to get a couple bad units.
Why does the music sound warped ?
has auto rotate been fixed now?
It's still slow to me on Pixels
I just bought one through Facebook marketplace (using the "buy now" button) for $300 I can't wait!!!
That's a great deal! Hope you enjoy it.
Did u ever get it?
4a 5g owner, upgraded from Pixel 2 XL. Poor stereo speaker sound. Camera hardware dated, but software compensates. Phone feels cheap. Screen flip is slow as is Android Auto connection. Battery life similar to my 3yr old phone. I chose the 4a 5g over the 4a and 5 due to larger screen size. Feels less like an upgrade and more like I bought a $150 phone with stock Android.
I think I'm more impressed at how your 3 year old battery has aged. Thanks for the comment.
I can see the LED diode next to the loudspeaker, this phone has it, it doesn't blink for me
Infrared, can only be seen from camera
I think I see an Apple Watch on your wrist. Do you use a IPhone as your daily driver?
I always use an iPhone and an Android phone daily.
I picked this phone up brand new from Xfinity mobile for $250 no promos involved... This was a steal
Wow, that's an amazing deal! Nice pickup. 👍
This thing overheats android 13 didn't help either.
Wow they added 4k 60 on the mid range ... Wonder why they didn't on the 4xl. Hahah.
I love the pixel 4xl so I can imagine how well optimized this thing is. I shoot all my vids now on the pixel 4xl. I'm thinking the 6 series will be absolutely ridiculous amazing.
Definitely looking forward to the new Pixel 6 phones!
They need to use the pixel 6 to use the pixel 4A5G but maybe more advanced just a Lil and a more thinner
‘He owes me money” LMAO
I have had some small issues with the screen no being responsive at the bottom. It happened a few times last week or so. Buy not last couple days. So idk. It's a issue tho
Sorry to hear that. I saw some articles about touch issues when using navigation buttons, but I haven't run into that myself.
@@GrantLikesTech they may have fixed it. Might of been a bug. It was the bottom right
@@dreamleaf6784 Now its fine??
@@stefanosa5050 yeah. I think it was fixed a week or so ago I got a update and now I don't notice it.
@@dreamleaf6784 Nice to hear that. How is the camera performance so far? Because im planning to upgrade from honor 20 pro
I want to get one
Meh CBA with slow auto rotate🤔😔
Lol he owes me money
Have this phone and I have a question, why when watching Hulu, prime, and hbo max does the screen not allow full screen to be utilized, such a waste of screen.
Aspect ratio?
@@Krstorm402 not sure but netflix and TH-cam use whole screen just fine
@@Krstorm402 how can I change aspect ratio
Sadly it's the same on each device. Some apps just don't allow pinch to zoom for video.
Got mine for $420😎
Nice, there's a lot of great deals on these out there right now.
Got it half off
Yep, lots of great deals have been out there. Hope you enjoy it!
I really like my pixel 4a 5g but for a month Google voice Assistant not responding after I say ok Google or hey google🤷
Did you check the google app settings to be sure the voice command is enabled or maybe tried training it for your voice?
@@GrantLikesTech I've tried everything 😑 and when I try to retrain voice it says Trouble Connecting check your connection and try again🤦. Everything is switched on. Since my last update it has not been working.
That's odd. When in doubt, factory reset. 🤞
We need something like siri
No face unlock is a pro for me 😆
Understandable
please give me a pixel 4a phone I would be grateful to you all my life bro !!!
That's one boxy phone.
Don't buy a Pixel! I bought a 4 XL and the thing is garbage! It reboots constantly and Google's support is AT&T bad. My only repair option is to mail it off for 10 days. Don't buy a Pixel.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Definitely didn't experience that with my 4XL. I've had every Pixel and really enjoyed them.
@@GrantLikesTech It's a pretty common issue. They've actually extended the warranty another year on the 4XL for rebooting and freezing issues. My beef with Google isn't the phone not working it's the fact that my only support option is to mail my phone off for 10 days. I'm working remote I can't go without my phone for 2 weeks.
@@andrewz61 Pixel 4 XL was anyway the bust of the year phone. It had awful battery and gimmicks. Other pixels are really good and this time I think the Pixel 5 is really good.
Never had a single issue with any Pixel. Buy a Pixel, best Android experience.
