I do think it does one thing right: because damage is universally low, usually only 1 or 2 points per hit, it's easier to make solo monsters that can actually fight all the rangers and be scary. Everyone knows a solo monster in 5e is just a brief opportunity for the players to stomp them to death while laughing.
The real reason the system doesn’t feel like power rangers is because it isn’t meant to BE power rangers- it’s meant to be a generic system they can redeco in Power Rangers, Gi Joe, Transformers, and even (*HEAVY sigh*) My Little Pony colors so they can have “cross compatible” play…
Yeah, that's one of the big issues. Though I've done a quick once over of the GI Joe one and it's . . . different. Quite different in fact. Which makes me think which of these was "first" to be made.
@@NotepadAnon I think it was Power Rangers. When it initially came out people were confused because there was missing errata and things not being explained well enough.
Also, the thoughts on essence 20 creation, it was originally going to be 5e compatible but due to the open gaming license scandal, they made their own.
>Classes emulate a specific ranger and its annexed tropes Good Lord it's Henshin Hero all over again >Time Force is the best series BASED! BASED AND QUANTUMPILLED! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO HAS GOOD TASTE!
The main issue for me... This doesn't feel like you using your own rangers... And it feels like it should be a budget game pretending to be power rangers than an official version.
That's a main issue with these Sentai games that treat the different colors as specific classes / playbooks (which happens a lot in this sub-genre of RPGs). It's just more limiting than anything else. Sure you can argue that certain archetypes _do_ gravitate towards specific colors in the source material, but the same source material also has examples of outliers. What IMO is more important is the overall team dynamic, like how the most consistent trait of Red & Blue is that they tend to have opposing personalities (forming a sort of friendly rivalry).
I haven't run this yet but I'm prepping it. The smarts and social basically being your role play skills. But I do like strength has intimidation in it.
I'm one of those people where Power Rangers is near and dear to his heart. I feel like if you're not going pseudo deconstruction like Henshin, Heroes, Power Rangers needs to be done with combat system more fluid than the one that comes packed into the d20 System, but is still crunchy enough that the martial arts feels good. Many years ago, I ran a Power Rangers game I called Genbu Sentai Starranger. I left out the combining mecha except as a combined attack finisher for the team (since controlling your own transforming mecha that change from stuff like a giant bear into a bear-themed "Crab Clan Samurai" in L5R lingo) is cooler. Up until the announcement of PRE20, I was working on a ranger hack for my my own system but shelved it since Battalion Sentai Calbinger was a ways off. But ever since its release I've had to get back to work. I don't hate Essence d20. But I think it's a bad fit for both martial arts superheroes and giant robots.
Now I really need Notepad Rangers RPG 😆 I would love to play using weapons as Pen Sword, Automatic Pencil Gun with Origami Zords vs Lord Ink and his Eraser Minions xD
What a boring game. Classic illustration of why 5e should not be used for anything besides 5e. There have been other versions of Sentais that have a face character and those made them still useful. With the amount of bullshit you can pull from 5e and Sentai to make mental skills do something, it's just laziness.
I can't deny that Time Force was one of the best seasons. Still prefer SPD but over in Super Sentai Land, Boukenger and Lupinranger vs Patranger are king with those stat names all starting with S, I'd want to use it for Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad
LuPat is my goat. Time Force might be the best season by a lot of metrics, but I’m a Disney fanboy so RPG is my king (huge soft spot for Jungle Fury tho)

Great comment 🤣 Waifuzord 🤖 had me in tears ❤
This is an impressively overthought and criminally underappreciated comment, OP. Bravo, sir. 👏🏻
