British Rail Network SouthEast-Basingstoke, Woking & Andover Class 47, 205 DEMU & InterCity 125 HST

We are back to October 1992 and it's a Saturday, and another special NSE Rover Day. I'm out on the West of England line, riding around behind class 47s to get some Sulzer thrash! As well as the booked ex Scotrail 47/7's there are a couple of Res 47/4s in service. We see the action at Basingstoke, Woking & Andover, and as well as the 47's we see a class 205 Thumper DEMU and an Inter-City 125 HST. Wow, those were the days. NSE and black clag! Watching the first frames of the HST approaching Basingstoke made me think about today's trains. 20 years ago a nine coach (luxury) set and today a 5 coach voyager that is usually rammed. So much for progerss.

Totally Agree I remember the HST's had services called the Pines Express (To Manchester) The Wessex Scot (To Glasgow via WCML) The Dorset Scot ( To Edinburgh via ECML) bring back wonderful memories especially when the class 205/207 failed and we put stop orders for HST's to call at Bramley and Mortimer

I love these old trains, and the Class 47 haulage brings back some of my earliest memories of pre-electrification Cambridge to London Liverpool Street expresses. But my goodness, the black clag that some of these made... that's actually quite revolting. Maybe it's just as well that things do eventually move on a little, but with a courteous nod to preservationists too.

Ahhhh gone are the days of heads out the window :)
I had a Girlfriend in Fareham when I lived in Portsmouth, and I used to catch the Cardiff Express from Portsmouth and Southsea, and head out the Window when the train expressed through Fratton, yelling out "Argh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" as we passed :)
Of Course it is all electrified now apparently..

best thing we used to on " network days " started with the 5.00 from Fratton and do odd things all day , so on one we went furthest east, furthest south etc another one we went to all the odd named stations.... eg: bat and ball...etc .. awsome times

I remember not long before that there were still a few ancient goods wagons dumped in the Woking bay seen at 5:50 and 9:20. Certainly around 1990 they were still there. Great footage, brings it all back

Seen three of my 47s in this video. 47701 and 47712 both in the liveries they carry on my layout (NSE and Parcels), and also you caught 47535 in parcels red; I have it in large logo blue!
