The fluff was always a bit inconsistent on the Dark Elf numbers. Even so, I always got the impression that the Dark Elves procreated a lot more vigorously than the High Elves (given the Slaanesh focus, this seems feasible). This must surely be the case, since unlike the High Elves, who carefully nurture and protect their youth, the Dark Elves actively encourage fratricide, infanticide, and patricide, meaning that if they _didn't_ procreate much more rapidly than their High Elf cousins they would simply have gone extinct by now. Low birthrate + high infant mortality rate = extinction very, very quickly.

About the size of cities, you have to remember that Middle-Ages cities were quite... small indeed. We are not really talking hundreds of thousands for a minor city like modern times. That Altdorf has 200k people in it, at most, would already make it the biggest city in the continent. People die young. Then again, we are talking about elves. But I would argue that Dark Elves are... shall we say, unstable enough to negate that point.

I'd guess we'll see dark elves, high elves, lizard men and tomb kings in the third and final expansion, expanding the map to the west and south to finally include the whole thing (well apart from the east, i doubt we'll get to conquer cathay), after the second expansion give's us areas like bretonia and the grim north.
I like the Dark Elves. They are one of the most determined races I've ever seen in any lore before, always trainning and harnessing their skills in quiet and dreaded perseverance. While the high elves simply enjoy with self-righteousness their lives in Ulthuan, the Druchii slowly but steadily approach their righteous rule over their once homeland...

The high elves are protected from enemies by an ocean and the wood elves are protected by their forest and the bretonnians. Dark elves need to aggressively push themselves more than their counterparts as few external matters protect them. In the Dark Elf mind, if one is too stupid or lazy to increase their strength, skills or social standing then that elf deserves to suffer for his/her incompetence (and lack of benefit/use to society). Also the two strongest/oldest dark elves hold most (if not all) of the power of the DE community and the closer that an elf gets to gaining the attention and approval of either Malekith or Morathi, the more likely a chance, that one can advance in the DE community and life. A general DE concept is that efficiency in skills/duties of an elf outweigh the likability or morality of him/her. Again, efficiency/strength is more important than morality in most (if not all) matters.
Does anyone turn on the subtitles for this? It is so damn hilarious seeing 1000 different things that rhyme with Khaela menshia kaine (I think that's how you spell it)
Will you make "hero" episodes? as Karl Franz, Grimgor Ironhide, High King Thorgrim and Mannfred von Carstein. where you tell more of the lore and story? Well in here and in the high elf video you talk quite alot about the witch king. and I know you talked somewhat of Grimgor Ironhide but I dont know anything about the others what I remember.
Arch, Huge fan. May I please request a Daemons of Chaos faction over-view? The level of detail and perspective, as well as wonderful amusing personal opinions would be great to hear on a rampaging horde of corrupted monsters!
Unrelated to Warhammer, more for anyone interested in a better interpretation of something the narrator mentioned. Stealing children wasn't really a joking kinda thing among historic Native American tribes. A lot of groups had laws that required either the killing or adoption of a captive (of whatever age) whenever a member of the tribe was lost through accident, warfare, or murder. Depending on the tribe, captives could be given to the family of the deceased in substitute for their loved one. This was for peace of mind, economic concerns, religious reasons, etc.
This is wrong. Malekith was never a slanesh worshipper. He worships the Cytherai which are the dark gods of the elves which are headed by Khaine, the God of murder. The high elves mainly worship the Cadai which are headed by Asuryan.
+fdmarminy Malekith never had the highest opinion of the gods. Dark gods or "light" gods, because the Gods didn't protect the elves when the polar warp gates collapsed. The time when daemons, mutants etc were killing elves all over Ulthuan. Even when partly assisted by Asuryan and Khaine, the elves were forced to save themselves. Malekith sees the Gods as sources of power at most, as opposed to things to be worshiped. There is a reason why he isn't the leader of dark elf religion, even Aenarion played a part in Malekith's impiety, as well as Morathi. The only times he appears to be religious is when it is beneficial for him to appear so.
9:25 in the video: If you repeat "Total War: Warhammer" will be a good game," often enough, then you people might start to believe you. Edit: To my pleasant surprise, I was correct. This was written in the middle of the pre-order scandal, so I didn't have a positive outlook on things.
Illusive Man Probably not. Malekith was created in the comics in the early 80's, so I wouldn't be surprised if the creators of Warhammer took the name.
+Illusive Man Keep in mind that the term "Malekith" translated is (more or less), "evil friend" or "evil fellow" so while there is a coincidence with the same title being used, Thor might not have ripped off Warhammer. There is a chance that they did but also a chance that they didn't.
is it possible that the majority of dark elf raiding forces and their capital population isn't actually dark elf, but other races for the settlement and marauders for the raiding parties?
Just got a pop up in TW:W about this massive sea fortress raiding my sea trade for 25% for 3 turns. Can't wait for the reveals. I am in shut and take my money CA and GW mode right now. Went back and am doing a Hard Empire Campaign. No beastman, blood, or WE DLC yet but I will have them cause its still cheaper than models.
I would love a game of thrones style series on the sundering and the high elf/dark elf war with the war of the beard also working itself out in the background
Poisoning elves in self defense has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard X3 Besides when the dark elves tried to blow up the well but the well used a reverse Uno card on them, that was hilarious
I seem to recall something in the 5E books alluding to the idea that the overwhelming majority of the capitol's population consisted of slaves taken on raiding expeditions, and broken by the horrors of the temples of the Witches... Something like that.
Dark elves: they make an art and effort of torture and pain. They are passionate about being evil, quite likely the most evil race in warhammer universe.
The dark elf society is an 'Aristocratic Kratocracy' - wikipedia "A government established by seizure utilizing force or deceit with rule maintained by strength"
Probably others have spotted this, but i think you made a mistake when you talked about "Ghrond" It is the city of Morathis other project, the Sorceresses, not the witchelves. (ofcause i could be remembering wrong, but googling ghrond didn't get me any connection between it and the witchelves)

What do you think about the odds the game based on the screenshots that it would be released this year or next? And I will always subscribe to the fact that the chaos gods must have had a hand in making the more wick elven god's since magic in warhammer come from the warp and making these god's must have required a lot of power, the chaos could very easily sneak in there powers such as with khaine
+Arch Warhammer Do dark elves have a dislike for the chaos dwarves like the 'normal' elves and dwarves do? Do they hate each other? Chaos dwarves work with chaos armies and with a lot of dark elves being worshippers of Slaanesh could they put their differences aside?
The dark elf Slaanesh worshippers don't exactly join chaos hordes on raids, which is where the Chaos Dwarves would be chilling. They do their bit in Slaanesh names in quite a human sacrifice, bdsm stuff...
Hehe, no wonder Skaven and Dark Elfs respect each other :D There are so many similarities :D I don't know which one is better. They both are equally cool. DE have scantaly clad women and Skaven have furr :D Both are my favourite things anyway :D
Well, slaves answer the question on how dark elf capital could be a major population center and at the same time house relatively few dark elves. Say there's 100.000 of them evil bastards around, that could easily mean at least half a million, if not many more, slaves.
What could the terrible beasts be? Could their be an undiscovered race in the Southern wastes? Maybe a hyper aggressive breed of lizard man exiled from lustria?
Any chance you can upload the images (or tell me where you found them)? I've been looking for them on google, but I haven't been able to find several of them. Thanks

Does anyone turn on the subtitles for this? It is so damn hilarious seeing 1000 different things that rhyme with Khaela menshia kaine (I think that's how you spell it)
I absolutely delight in listening to these videos
13:52 "I´m taking my ball and going home" - so much childhood memories...
Will you make "hero" episodes? as Karl Franz, Grimgor Ironhide, High King Thorgrim and Mannfred von Carstein. where you tell more of the lore and story?
Well in here and in the high elf video you talk quite alot about the witch king. and I know you talked somewhat of Grimgor Ironhide but I dont know anything about the others what I remember.
ragsash probably
and of c then I would like to know more about their armor/weapons and mounts.
and do people have the potenchal to find "gear" magical items?
No dude they don't find gear
By far, favourite faction
Hey Arch, I love your rambling :D. Subscribed!
Arch, Huge fan. May I please request a Daemons of Chaos faction over-view?
The level of detail and perspective, as well as wonderful amusing personal opinions would be great to hear on a rampaging horde of corrupted monsters!
Anyone else catch "The Dark Elves 'vörship'"? I can empathise there, Arch 😅
I still have the nightmares from the old D&D days in there Dark cities, any how my thank for this videos, as always very informative.
I wish you would make a video dedicated to ranting about the end times fluff.
I love hearing people rant
Vanilla Cream I second that motion. I think an Arch End Times rant would be glorious!
Nurgle + Tzeench = Skaven/Horned Rat
Khorne + Slaanesh = Dark Elves/ Khaine
42:33 we have a word for it, America
Loved this, painted 2 ancient Assyrian chariots, all the best Garry
so malakith is darth vader?
+The Sweaty Spartan aye. His son is thus Luke Skywalker
More like kylo ren
The Sweaty Spartan or Arthas.
or Doctor Doom.
Yes, Fantasy Rapist Darth Vader
I think the word is Social Darwinism ...maybe
That voice at the end! I FUCKING LOST IT!
What comes to mind in their method of government is an Oligarchy, that rich upper class with more class mobility than feudal society.
love these threads! keep up the great work!!!
9:25 in the video: If you repeat "Total War: Warhammer" will be a good game," often enough, then you people might start to believe you.
Edit: To my pleasant surprise, I was correct. This was written in the middle of the pre-order scandal, so I didn't have a positive outlook on things.
+Tom R I didn't knew you could look into the future and predict things before they happen.
Jeremias Astorga I AM THE BRIDGE GOD!!!
Tom R no!,bad malal,that's tzeentchs job!
#1 was ok but #2 just took everything good about 1 and made it ten times better fucc my nape
Is it just a coincidence that the Dark Elf leader in Thor: The Dark World is called Malekith?
Illusive Man Probably not. Malekith was created in the comics in the early 80's, so I wouldn't be surprised if the creators of Warhammer took the name.
That's possible, but the more notable Tolkien influence is his title "The Witch King" after the former King Of Angmar turned leader of the Nazrgul
+Illusive Man No it is a blatant rip off
+Illusive Man Keep in mind that the term "Malekith" translated is (more or less), "evil friend" or "evil fellow" so while there is a coincidence with the same title being used, Thor might not have ripped off Warhammer. There is a chance that they did but also a chance that they didn't.
blindlobster No Warhammer ripped off Marvel
i got it! the Dark eldar "empire" so to say, are a... Drumroll please... "Stab-ocracy"!
is it possible that the majority of dark elf raiding forces and their capital population isn't actually dark elf, but other races for the settlement and marauders for the raiding parties?
Can you do Kislev or the Dogs of War first
Ohh good ol Warhammer Online~ fun game! I really miss it
Romans werent worst slavers. Some slaves who worked in richmen houses lived better life than many poor free romans.
Darth Hippy really? can you please tell me the name about that event? im deathly curious
I can't it's been a long time since I played. sorry about that.
Darth Hippy It doesnt matter, i found it anyway. Thanks.
I would love a game of thrones style series on the sundering and the high elf/dark elf war with the war of the beard also working itself out in the background
Can't wait for the army video.
you really come down hard on the dark elves.
12:46 The magical Chaos Armor probably had something to do with that.
Poisoning elves in self defense has to be the most ridiculous thing I've heard X3
Besides when the dark elves tried to blow up the well but the well used a reverse Uno card on them, that was hilarious
Need more pictures , please.
Elranoaz just don't look at the screen
I seem to recall something in the 5E books alluding to the idea that the overwhelming majority of the capitol's population consisted of slaves taken on raiding expeditions, and broken by the horrors of the temples of the Witches...
Something like that.
Dark elves: they make an art and effort of torture and pain. They are passionate about being evil, quite likely the most evil race in warhammer universe.
The dark elf society is an 'Aristocratic Kratocracy' - wikipedia "A government established by seizure utilizing force or deceit with rule maintained by strength"
Probably others have spotted this, but i think you made a mistake when you talked about "Ghrond"
It is the city of Morathis other project, the Sorceresses, not the witchelves. (ofcause i could be remembering wrong, but googling ghrond didn't get me any connection between it and the witchelves)
43:06 Sure, we call those ‘democracies’, and half the world utilizes them. It sucks pretty hard.
Dark elf: "Hey dude.... *Snorts warpstone* I just had like an epiphany man, if our God HAS LIKE, A BLOODY HAND... AND THAT SCARY BLACK DUDE MALAKETH HAS A BURNT HAND.....HE MUST BE GOD HOLY SH## ####" DUDE. /AUTOFOLLOW
"I'm taking my ball and going home" lol
Male witchelves? would that be scantily clad witchers?
Planken I'd love to see scantly clad super sexy beautiful warrior boys:)
hahaha stole yer wife! Oh, you!...
Maybe the supposedly small Elven population and high population of the Delf capital can be reconciled by saying it's population is mostly slaves.
These Druchii are really a bunch of sick/hairless monsters - monsters *holding my pet-rat and gnawing on terrible black grain*
+Jost Ruttel Well, the Druchii line of thought (as they are raised in a militaristic society) is that each elf should push himself/herself to be as strong or as powerful as possible so that the Dark elf community can be as powerful/strong as possible against the enemy forces which it does face.
It was meant a little bit ironic because Skaven (see my little pet-rat? ;D ) are not really better :D
Yes, I got the joke. I just felt that the extra info (or difference between the two species) might be interesting to you. As a sidenote, I feel that one of the most appealing factors of the skaven is that they hold all of the worst features of man, only exaggerated to an almost comedic level.
good vid
Dark elves send giant pirate raids for one real booty they desire - wood! Zomglol warhammer is so silly sometimes, let's hope it never changes.
Lore :D Sat and refeshed for this!
Now when you move on to the smaler loresubjects, is it possible that you will release lore videos more often?
Notna07 probably LESS often realy, as it will require considerably more digging.
Great videos Arch! Where did u learn norwegian btw i saw you talk in a previous video :D? What do you think about the odds the game based on the screenshots that it would be released this year or next? I've seen on a norwegian store that they already ordered the game to the store (it said late November) another site i've seen says next year ( :'( )
Kroksleiven Tordenskiold umm, i am norwegian so speaking it seams logical. as for release it could possibly happen late this year but with potential delays my money would probably be on Q1-Q2 next year
Nei men så kult! :) Gleder meg så sinnssykt, sjekket ut alle filmene dine, må bare få takke for den innsatsen du legger ned, blir satt veldig stor pris på av meg og mange andre :) Keep on rocking!
IT wold be cool if you can make your own unit
Maybe dark elves clone themselves? The Pillarmen in Jojo would be cool looking male Witchelves
And I will always subscribe to the fact that the chaos gods must have had a hand in making the more wick elven god's since magic in warhammer come from the warp and making these god's must have required a lot of power, the chaos could very easily sneak in there powers such as with khaine
i really wish them in the game, official or moded, i will play only dark elves
This is possible indeed .
Druchii
Nice video !
Time to start a comment debate... Which do you like better High Elves or Dark Elves or Wood Elves
I dont like any Elgi
Dark elves are the Emperors Children without the musical talent.
Thanks
What do you think of enemies u might face while playing total war? like rebels etc
Maybe some beast men but idk.
I believe that the authors flat out stated, that the numbers of a race will always be enough for a story. So, if a billion need to die, then a billion will exist.
Can you do the Deamons of Chaos and the Amazons please :p
this also imply that tge dark elves eat the slaves as well
Dark Elves look cool.
