    ABOUT
    _
In this video, I talk about Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov, self-deception, knowledge, truth, and not lying to yourself.
If truth is the actual way to our destination, knowledge is the map that we have. And when the map gets us to our destination, we say that knowledge is true.
But knowledge is never truth, and to confuse the two is to confuse the map for the territory, the directions for the actual way, what was for what is, and to close oneself off to all learning. Mistaking knowledge for truth is the root of all self-deception. But a mind that separates these two things, that realizes that knowledge is never truth, that the map is never the territory, always remains open to change, to testing, to learning, to updating its map in accordance with the territory, and because of that, it will never deceive itself.

      It's the Epimenides paradox.
Priest says all who think they are correct are in fact wrong.
Priest thinks he is correct, therefore he is wrong.
So all who think they are correct, are in fact correct.
Priest thinks he's correct, therefore he's correct.
So all who think they are correct are in fact wrong.
Priest thinks he's correct therefore he is wrong... And on and on.
It a sort of circular reasoning fallacy. The fallacy being that the definition used in an argument cannot be an argument that concludes the definition is wrong.
That's also wisdom, just not in the way you think it is.

People constantly lie to themselves simply because they seem to have lost the ability to actually see themselves, their thoughts, their actions, instead they are too busy looking at others, judging others as it’s an easier thing to do. It takes lots of courage to be honest to oneself.

That’s my daily goal and current struggle. I feel if I can look at myself honestly, not just observing my greater ideas and actions resulting in successes, but also the really ignorant and embarrassing decisions that led to various troubles ect, I make a breakthrough in bringing my life into spiritual and psychological balance. Im convinced spiritually, the moment I can truthfully assess myself and stare into my own darkness without running away, it loses its power and my life will lighten from the inside out.

Sometimes the ones who have a truth they tell of themselves is a truth that is self destructive though so they must lie to themselves especially if they are on a path to recovery/self improvement. Saying things such as "ugly" "stupid" or something may be exactly how the person believes they are calling themselves beautiful and intelligent when they in fact aren't is a lie but it's good for the spirit and mind.

  • @HuongNguyen-bk7nv

I think what Dostoevsky meant was that we know facts, see events, feel emotions, but we deny that they exist or don't matter. We can see details or errors but choose to ignore them thinking some things are ignorable when they may be not. This happens all the time when we take shortcuts or refuse to own up to mistakes. I don't think it is about mistaking knowledge for truth. I think it is about pretending to be ignorant of the truth to not be seen as culpable. Once a person knows something and it's associated consequences, one is immediately responsible for the consequences, particularly if there is no one else looking. By pretending, for example, you are not aware of your own emotions and faults, you can claim ignorance, be absolved, and even blame others for your own emotions and faults. That's an observable and common human behavior, just like people trying to pretend they know or don't know or people claiming the truth. While I can agree that knowledge is a human perception and truth exists irrespective to human perception or understanding, I don't think that is the takeaway from Dostoevsky. Because to even be cognizant that we lie requires us to know the truth, otherwise we could not even perceive of the self-deception. And, non-cognizance is not the same as self-deception. Self-deception requires knowing the truth. How can one otherwise know one is deceiving one's self on purpose or accidentally?

Nice video 👍 “A map is not the territory it represents" - Alfred Korzybski, father of general semantics.
Map shows river, forest but it does not contain any water or tree as the Territory. Our perceived knowledge ("map") of the reality ("territory") is an abstraction of the reality, not the reality itself.
The problem is we forget that we made our map.
Knowledge both liberating but also a trap.

Lie to oneself is a daily practice we endure it when we are obliged to suppress our feelings to fit in . We keep our true emotions away to the point we end up not knowing what we want and how we are at this point. Dostoevsky wants us to reveal our feelings and thoughts no matter how difficult the situation is. To cease love is a result of not recognizing our real feelings and ending up with losing our self-respect. The beauty of Literature is in its openness to all kinds of interpretation and my understanding and yours of the quote are part of a whole picture.

I disagree with this interpretation. Lying to yourself means acting disingenuously or inauthentically, acting in a way that isn’t in accordance with your values. When one acts contrary to what they believe and hold dear in their hearts, they will become out of touch with themselves since their hypocrisy blinds their self-knowledge. Since they can’t even trust themselves to act honestly, how can they trust others? Since they have a general distrust of humanity/seeing only the bad in people, they will cease to love.

I found this quite interesting. I've never thought about how the knowledge that we have isn't particularly true. Like my plans and aspirations in life or different methods of how to live my life are not truth. They're all simply maps that could help guide me to the truth. I think about how there's a lot of different flavors of philosophy or religion. At times they can claim to be the truth but the reality is that they are maps to it. You have to follow that map to see if it's correct or not. I've tried to use many different productivity systems and they show to be the truth but they're really just a map. Some systems I have found to be valuable in bringing me to where I want to go and others actually aren't the map that was able to guide me to truth.

"Truth is a mirror broken into a thousand pieces and each of us has one". I don't know whose is this quote, but I think it's great, for the truth is something ungraspable. You can have a glimpse of it, but overall, every one makes their own truth, as a map to walk through life. I am not saying truth is relative, just that it's a polyhedron with many faces so no one can grasp them all. That said, if we lower it down, lying to oneself regarding one's life and how it is lived, it's something the majority of people do, many times because they just want to follow the social norm-what's commonly accepted. Truth is scary and many people don't dare to face it so they live with the belief that what they think they know -not even what they actually know- is the truth.

We have our ego and we have our other self, seeing its reflection and offering the possibility of introspection ; It is a part of us that’s coming to life, and as other truth and knowledge, it has some to teach us all. We must embrace this deceptive aspects of our being to be able to move and grow better.

I combined the dialogues and Dostoyevsky's lines as I should not even think as thinking is more like speaking to oneself and truth cannot be spoken. And one should not lie to himself. So,just see the world how it is. Don't think about it. You would be liying to yourself. That would help me also from the habit of overthinking.👍

Lies seem to be the human brain's method of coping. A lot of the times, truth is painful and hard to confront so the brain finds ways to delude us by distorting reality.
It's easy but unfortunately, not a good long-term solution...

I think that Dostoevsky, was not talking about truth vs. knowledge in this sentence but, he was talking about truth and desire/want/will.
what I mean is that a person can say to everyone, even him/herself that they want something but the truth is that they want something different. this discrepancy between what we want and what we say we want is rooted in our experiences and knowledge of the world we live in, in our trauma, in our memories of the past that tells us what should we desire instead of what we trully feel we want.
    for example:
I feel I want to have a beautiful brunette girlfriend that is as beautiful inside and outside. but the truth is that what I get depends on multiple factors that only a few are under my control while others are completely out of my control.
for example: I may meet this brunette girl, that is exactly how I like her to be. but this does not mean that I am the one she likes and chooses to be her boyfriend. she may even dislike me or not accept me even as a friend. on the other hand, I may be attracting a black African girl who is in love with me, and I enjoy her company and we think alike, but I do not find her as physically as attractive. I also, at the same time find an Asian girl who is physically as I like women, but we do not think alike at all, and we have opposed world views and there is no liking between us. Also, another possibility is that I meet a girl that is physically what I want, and she may like me, but she is a horrible person who I won't be able to like that much either.
On the other hand, the same can be said all about me. I may not be good enough or be as they want their partner to be.
considering this, what I want can never always be truth.
but If I do not have clear that I "like brunette women" and think that "I like the African girl" just because she likes me back and we enjoy each other's company, then I may end up not truly loving the African, but pretending to lover her, which is a deception for myself and the girl who I may even end up cheating on later in life when the relationship is in a different stage.
"as a consequence: "loses all respect for himself and for others ... and having no respect ceases to love".
If I on the other hand, understand that I may not get to love her all the way she loves me, and I am honest about it with myself and her. but "decide" to love her regardless and have a relationship. I may end up being happy and authentic even if she is not all that I ever wanted. another outcome is that I am also honest with me and her and reject her. she initially will suffer as I suffer for not getting what I want but both are being honest and true to what we desire. so, we eventually will be fine, and life will go on.
Now this phenomenon is not kind of "wrong", a sin, or "the worst thing ever", etc. this is Just part of what being a human being is. is part of our reality. this world´s resources are limited, the amount of people you can meet is limited, the amount of time in a day is limited, the number of relationships that you will have in your life ... is limited. we can only choose regarding what´s been given to us to choose from.
as reality is limited, we can only afford to choose what we can, but many people live their lives waiting for the day they get to have what they truly want or ends up in addictions to cope with a reality that is not what they wanted. but all of this is a very human experience, the result of being conscious of all the possibilities that exists in our reality, no matter how far, how almost impossible that possibility is, we resist to lose the hope of getting what we truly want. that hope make us to suffer if we do not realize:
1.- what is what we want.
2.- is it reachable what we want.
3.- If I cannot get what I want, then, can I still be happy with what I have?
4.- I cannot expect a perfect reality and suffer because of things that I cannot control.
5.- whatever I was thought from my family I could achieve in life was probably wrong/a lie, and I should live not based on what others expect from me to achieve but from what makes me happy sometimes and is good enough for me (because nobody can always be happy and that is right).
6.- whenever we think we can get something and we do not, we suffer. so, we should always keep in check our expectations from reality and deal with it so that whatever the result is, we are fine with ourselves and others.
7.- not getting what we want is a natural part of life. when in our life, we get what we want, it is because many factors were met for that to happen, some were met due to your active decisions and work and others are not in your control (luck/God was on our side).

Acc to me it says..Knowledge is that we KNOW when we are lying in front of others but eventually it becomes a habit or a part of the routine which leads to our mind perceiving it as something true or a path that will lead us out of the situation we are stuck in. Eventually we keep on lying, feeling we know that it's a lie or feeling that only we are aware of that subtle difference from the real incident but at the end we realise it makes a domino effect and the roots which were nothing but lie kept on growing in a full tree & guess what now WE can't distinguish the lie with the truth getting stuck in loop hole.
