  • I rank the characters of the second generation of Fire Emblem 4: Genealogy of the Holy War, according to how much I'd recommend using them. Characters are not ordered within categories.
    Every character is useable, but since this game can be a bit tedious I recommend picking a group of characters you like and keeping the rest in the castle. Watch the video to learn more about how you can make the most out of each character!

    Of all the kids I do think Fee is the best one (besides Lief lol). Even though the game doesn't really favor fliers, she does have quite a few spots to take advantage of flight. There's the mountain range in Ch6 where she can fight either the axe knights to the south or the bandits in the center. Ch7 is of course the desert, and she can cross it easily to assist Seliph and Shannan in taking the first castle. Ch9 she can cut through the mountains to the west and help save the villages plus position herself to help fight the cavalry reinforcements later. Ch10 she cuts through the mountain and forested area and even the sea to fight several enemies. And even in the final chapter, while everyone is snaking their way around the forests and mountains on the west side Fee can just cut through to make it to the generals ahead of everyone. So while being a flier isn't ideal in FE4, at least in book 2 there are quite a lot of spots where Fee can make good use of her flight unlike Erinys who doesn't really have any spots where her flight is immensely helpful.

    • @SniperYanda
      @SniperYanda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I always give Fee the Hero Lance and Recover Ring. She's able to run off on her own where no one else can, do a lot of hit-and-runs onto mountains or cliffsides, and with pursuit+adept built in, she just never stops attacking. Chances are that Hero Lance gets a bunch of kills, and then she's critting nonstop too. Bonus points for the staves on promotion too, she's never lacking for something to do that no one else is going to handle with all the forests and mountains in the way.

    • @14bj337
      @14bj337 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Claude!Fee is actually pretty rad. She takes minimal damage from mages, and is fairly resistant to status staves. She can kill low-Res enemies with magic swords, while even with low Strength, the Brave Lance is enough to one-round most magic users. On top of that, she gets B Staves upon promotion, giving her options like Recover and the status staves. I found her to be a Naga-send in the Endgame.
      Ice-hot take, most Fee builds are better than Leif, owing to having Pursuit and good movement before she promotes.

    • @MrCactuar13
      @MrCactuar13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@14bj337 Yeah I honestly kinda struggle between deciding if Fee or Leif is better overall. Fee has a much better start, pretty much impossible to screw up, and should do fine in the end game no matter what. Leif definitely has a rough start, he really wants some primo items like Pursuit Band (which Horseti Arthur also wants) and Paragon Band (everyone wants) until he promotes. Even then unless you did Claude!Lana you can't even take advantage of Rescue with a Ch8 promotion. So I definitely think it's fair to say that Fee is a better unit overall.

    • @dreadedprinny
      @dreadedprinny 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fee is hard to ruin, but her main issue is being a flier in FE4 since they have no road bonuses.
      Otherwise, her flexibility makes her unique among the kids.

      @MrCactuar13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dreadedprinny Like I said, there are plenty of spots throughout gen 2 that she can make good use of her flight. Not as ideal as being on the road, obviously, but compared to Erin I don't think being a flier hurts Fee as badly.

      I disagree. Balmung access with good bases and a high speed maximum statistic ensures that Shannan will always be viable for tricky situations. He's a great counter for every forseti minor fought in Gen 2, and these four enemies are often the hardest to dispose of otherwise. @grantsantos5027 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tristan is pretty good, probably the best of the substitutes. His good class (mounted, access to swords, a lot of speed gained on promotion) pretty much ensures his contribution, and he can take a few hits. Critical is not really a necessary skill for sword units that see combat in Gen 2, because there are plenty of crit swords to go around, but its useful in some situations. I think the reason few people use him is because Lachesis' kids are always better given they have an okay or optimal father (Finn, Beowulf, Alec, Azel, maybe Noish). Its hard to argue for Tristan when Diarmuid can easily be on the roster.

    Forseti Arthur I think should be in no brainer tier tbh. With a 50 star+ Forseti from Lewyn (which isn't that hard to do) he'll have a busted crit rate, wrath if he's at low health, and all he really needs is the pursuit ring which can be inherited from Lewyn too, and is impossible to hit basically. Shanan doesn't have to risk death in his joining chapter -- you just have to run away with Shanan, and send Fee over to help as quick as you can. Sending Lana to get as close as she can in order to use Physic is also probably necessary. I forget how it plays out exactly, but Fee should only have to kill a few guys to make it safe for Shanan to take on the rest, and she can do that by attacking one and canto'ing out of range of the others.
    I think a lot of players hesitate to use that strat because they want Shanan to fight the boss (which he does well), and you have to run moderately far away from him before Fee can get there. And it just feels bad to run away with a unit that just got a ridiculously powerful holy weapon.

His strength cap is actually somewhat low (Lower than Ares who already has an annoyingly low strength cap), his magic is bad and he's sword locked which is a pretty bad combo. He just doesn't have many good options in combat and what he offers is not much more impressive than Tristan/Arthur.
    Linda should go to utility. Her combat is fun but B staves on promotion is more noteworthy, arenas are free for her and she has paragon so no need to waste money on the paragon ring which gives her plenty of money to buy/repair status staves and just spam them.

People going in blind won't have the elite ring/leg ring setup in chapter 6, so units with better combat like the swordtwins will probably get more exp in someones first playthrough, and Celice can fall behind pretty easily, and he's quite bad if he's still unpromoted for chapter 8 or even 9, which I find can definately happen in someones first playthrough (mine included). I had to come here to check. There are so many people who swear that Johalva is superior to Johan but like, He lacks a horse. Is a 10-30% chance to double (or potentially take more damage if you don't kill them) over Vantage (admittedly not very useful) worth losing 2 and then 1 more move and Canto? You get Bows for better range but you can't canto out/switch weapons after.
    A major point they make is Johan having worse enemy phase because of Hand Axe being doodoo compared to Steel Bow but and that it's important because enemies have 1-2 range often.
    But like if they have 1-2 range they'll just 1 range your bow and you won't counter anyways. Plus how often is Player Phasing this 1-2 range enemy with a Steel Bow better than your Brave Axe?

    @MarceloKatayama 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Mr Dermott (Diarmuid? Delmud?) at base is kind of bad in the sense that he cannot reliably one round unless you use a very high tier sword, like silver sword. One good thing is that you get an extra brave sword by doing the Patty and Seliph convo in ch 7, which Diarmuid will make good use of due to his above average strength.
    Edit: btw, if any new player here has used the brave lance a lot during gen 1, you can give it some kills on gen 2 so that it reaches 50+ kills, which, if given to Finn, can make him a great combat unit throughout all of gen 2. Alternatively, Fee or Leif can keep it.
    Edit 2: For new players, if you've used Lex a lot in gen 1 (which, I could see why you would) then your brave axe probably has a lot of kills. This is what makes Johan useful, a high kill brave axe means that Johan can crit. And getting kills on brave axe isn't only easy, but getting it to 60+ kills is a very easy benchmark to reach (at least, that's what I've seen). This means that if Johan misses the first attack of his brave axe, he can still crit and one shot enemies. It also means that he can kill armored units much more reliably. Vantage and a critting brave axe makes it so that Johan can rig arenas and become a very good combat unit.
    Edit 3 (and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming): Miracle allows you to cheese arena so long as you have access to healing or the enemy's damage works out so that it leaves you at just 1-3 hp, because miracle won't trigger if your hp is below 10 whenever you enter the arena. Also, pairing a unit with Larcei and Scáthatch is a very very good way to give money to them. This is particularily useful for units like Leif or Arthur, who want to buy a couple of rings and bands to make their performance better. Alternatively, pairing Scáthatch with Patty makes it so that you can give the very high money he should've amassed to Patty, who can use it herself, or give it to anyone who needs it.

    hot take (lol): Arthur belongs in "Fun on Foot" tier. yes, he eventually gets Forseti on a horse, which sounds busted, but you have to put up with 18 levels worth of 5 movement to get him there. 5 movement is pretty bad by any FE's standards, and it's borderline unusable in FE4. having great 1-2 range doesn't matter when you can't get to the enemies ever.
    I would also argue Hannibal for utility tier because he ensures that the player doesn't get a game over from ambush reinforcements snatching the castle from them from the moment he joins, which is great for a new player who doesn't know when these reinforcements come and who doesn't want to have to leave one of their favorite units behind to guard the castle. it's not great and it's a job that a lot of people can do but it's more valuable than whatever the hell Rodolban is doing imo

      Without favoritism it takes a while, yes, but there is that annoying hand axe army at ch6 that he can easily deal with.

      The early chapters facilitate training arthur by a lot. Not only that, but he's the 3rd best user of the paragon band. And don't forget that what is probably your main warper, is also 5 movement, meaning that, when Seliph inevitably seizes another castle and enemies start pouring out to ambush the castle, you can pop out arthur with a warp, and he'll undoubtedly kill all of them. And it's not like this doesn't happen, chapter 8 has tons of instances of this exact scenario, so does chapter 9 if you dont have Arthur promoted by then. in chapter 7, by the time Seliph has reached Alster, Arthur should be near of the castle in which you fought Ishtore. This means that he can easily sit there and destroy all of Jabarro's squad. There are plenty of opportunities to "put up with 18 levels worth of 5 movement", and he's By far the best user of that experience (next to Leif, but I was assuming you'd have already invested quite a bit in him)

    • @naemissa7849
      @naemissa7849 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarceloKatayama I feel like all of that requires more knowledge of the game than a beginner would have, which is what these videos are aimed at. my point is that beginners already find FE4 to be a bit of a slog, and trying to find opportunities to feed kills to a 5 movement unit isn't gonna help with that. of course if you know where all the reinforcements spawn etc training him isn't a big deal.

    • @MarceloKatayama
      @MarceloKatayama 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@naemissa7849 Oh, I don't really know when reinforcements spawn. But just looking at your starting map you can see that there are plenty of opportunities to feed anyone kills, it's just that Arthur, by default (or more like, by Forseti), can get those kills the safest (warp + Forsetti ensures that Arthur will survive and Kill anything). A player is bound to see this, just like they usually search for opportunities to train the most fun units to use (Ayra, Larcei and Scáthatch being used by many begginers just because they are very fun to use). Keep in mind that most players are reactionary, and that reinforcements don't quite reach you on first turn. This means that warp will be very valuable for them, as they can get their most fun units back to the front, to the last castle conquered, and those can deal with the hordes of enemies that will try to ambush them. This is how I behaved during my first playthrough. Also, Arthur is very good combat wise, and even better upon promo, so it isn't out of place to recommend such a unit to a begginer, otherwise, Leif would suffer the same fate, don't you think?

      Getting Horseti is a big investment dump since you want him with Paragon Ring + Pursuit Ring and the former is destined to Seliph since he is the best user of it while he competes with Leif for the ring. No mention the 6th chapter is a Seliph spoonfeed fest and the 7th should be used to train Leif, so Lewyn!Arthur is low on the pecking order to get EXP + Paragon Ring in general when the prime goal of Lewyn!Arthur is to have Horseti which happens around Chapter 8 at best.
      Lester is a tragedy, even at his best, he is average and less useful than Midir despite being a better version of him since Gen 2 has better units or have 50-kills Javelin, Light Brand or maybe another magic sword. That's why a fair portion of players tends to make Lana better by sacrificing Lester to Claud genes nowadays.

Arthur does the same things whether he has Forseti or not, except kill a few bosses, which even if he was Horseti, he wouldn't be the be most optimal choice for them. There are plenty of units prepared to kill bosses in fe4, Horseti is not the end all, be all of boss killers. Just use Ares, Seliph, Shannan, Dermott, or Fee. There's no point to putting that much investment into a unit for the same result I'd get if he wasn't even there.
      Fee doesn't want +1 to staff rank. She wants combat stats and skills. Lewyn always caps her speed, magic, skill, defense, and res. Her luck is always high, and the worst strength to possibly get on Fee is 18, which has never happened, because anyone can just redo her arena unitl Fee recieves the stats they want. She is great for spamming Javelins, baiting enemies for faster seizes, crating with magic swords, and she fails to double generics. So the Adept and Critical is great to have from the beginning.
