If you buy everything from a trader and then level up, the traders inventory restocks.
So you can just go to withers, change class and then buy or steal from trader, restock, buy, restock until you have enough supplies where you can just chug potions on every turn if you want to
@@carry7871 If you are going to abuse Traders this way... Just take Partial Rest (Long Rest without selecting any Food/Drink Supplies). It will reset all shops and will take significantly less time compare level-ups for withers.
The best thing I did when I first played Baldur's Gate 3 was to make a rule for myself:
I HAD to use at least one consumable in EVERY encounter. It was a great way to get in the habit of using them and helped me learn what they all were and how to best use them.

That's a fantastic idea. Going to try this. Would make roleplay sense on whichever Wizard subclass it is that is alchemy focused.
I watched a guy doing an honor mode solo run, and I was really impressed by how creatively he used potions. Three examples:
1) Place down healing spells near the edge of a battle then have mage hand throw them at him during the fight.
2) Throw potions onto the ground before a battle then run through them during battle to get the effects without using any actions.
3) Cast sanctuary on yourself then drink an Angelic reprieve or slumber. Hilarious to see his Tav just sleeping in the middle of one of the toughest fights in the game.
Sanctuary + Angelic reprieve is such a good combo and I can’t believe I never thought of it!
After playing the game for 500+ hours, I had no idea it had drugs in it. Amazing.
Potion of Invisibility deserves to be higher -- almost none of the enemies in-game have See Invisibility, so you can do things like walk all the way to the spiral staircase in the final fight without agroing enemies or surprising bosses without having to make stealth checks. And, like the Potion of Speed, they're practically everywhere.
Invisibility + Haste can end most fights before they begin. S+ tier.
You can avoid lethargy from potions of speed by drinking another the turn before it runs out to maintain the haste effect and not lose a turn.

Also can throw a haste spore grenade at yourself on your end turn of speed. Will not give you an extra turn of speed but it will let you "come down" from it without the lethargy. Plus I wasn't even looking for the ingredients and I was able to craft a good handful of them.

Yea, do it! I kind of forced myself to start using poisons and coatings, but the only character I reliably remember to is on my archer assassin. A good poison is very powerful though, especially round one when he gets 5+ shots.
I started to use Potions of speed more liberally when I learned the Shovel trick: you can drop a potion at your feet and have your summon attack it, and your character will get that effect, but aoe is tiny so be careful.
Why not just throw the potion at someone’s feet? What is the benefit of dropping and a summon attacking it? Is it just a resource management thing?
@@joeracer302 Opportunity cost, pretty much. Shovel's action is generally less valuable than a party member's action, so you're sacrificing less by having Shovel attack a potion than having a party member throw it.
In Honor Mode a lot of the environmental stations that allow you to instantly long rest only work once. I've found the slumber and reprieve potions very useful in situations where the game doesn't let you long rest otherwise, like the end of Act 2. Especially since I didn't know they were only usable once was a surprise to me, these really helped my run and meant that it didn't end then and there.
I agree with you that normal healing potions deserve at least S tier. I could even see an argument for S+, since they kind of carry you through some of the most difficult parts of the game (as in the early game). Greater Healing at A is neither here or there for me, just depends how you define tiers.

@@papaAJ88 Good Luck! I found it an amazing experience, not being able to reload bad outcomes really puts the game into a new perspective. Some of the most fun I had with any game ever.
I used the invisibility potion to help the counselor to escape the prison. By throwing it at her.
If you click on her, then press tab to open party inventory, she can drink it herself

Just remember one thing no matter how bs a situation gets if you start to get pissed off DO NOT take it out on your hardware you will end up playing with luck and break something unintentionally and then hate yourself for being dumb like me I was in the counting house the assassins kept stabbing my team then turning invisible and half my team was stunned this little irritating situation was the straw the broke the camels back for me and I lost my temper threw my controller into the closet ripped the charging cable out of the port on my Playstation and then the dumb part I whipped the cord at my plasma tv which I know nothing about how they work the metal end of the cord smack the screen and boom entire TV was dead immediately

Well done, I appreciate the well thought out explanations for their rankings and applications.
The potion of angelic reprieve is really cheap and easy to get (Lann Tarv in act 2 sells these directly, without crafting), and if you have a sorcerer, this is stupidly strong.
If you have at least 4 caster levels, 2 of which being sorcerer, you have 4 level 1 and 3 level 2 spell slots. If you turn all of these into sorcery points, use the sorcery points to create level 2 slots, turn these into sorcery points to create level 2 slots and repeat until you are out of sorcery points, and then drink the potion, you will get enough level 2 slots for 20 sorcery points. Without any additional resource cost (since you get back all your low level slots)
So a single potion of angelic reprieve gives you 20 additional sorcery points. And any additional potion gives you even more, the growth is exponential. You can easily buy enough of these so that you can use one after every long rest with your sorcerer

i never knew what the Vitality or Trrazul potion was for because i don’t get many chances to get those. Vitality would be useful to cure the “disease” you get from getting bitten by Astarion to give him his “Happy” buff. Curing disease otherwise requires a Paladin Lay in Hands double charge or Lesser Restoration (a 2nd level slot).

Potions of healing are synergistic with buff on heal items like whispering promise ring and the gloves that apply bladeward on heal. Also, thrown healing potions have an AoE. Effectively, you can have 1 healing potion do the work of mass healing word if thrown by the cleric with buff on heal items to grouped up party just before combat starts. Thrown healing potions also most cost effective way to heal because of AoE.
Potion of speed lethargy can be avoided by drinking a 2nd one on the last turn (after you spend all the actions, leave a bonus action for potion), helpful if fights go longer. Only risk of lethargy is from a particular very late game fight that can inflict mindquake slow effect.
Angelic slumber is great for stacking day-long buffs. Just before the last major fight, you lose all camp caster buffs and elixir buffs, but can't to back to camp. I always have cleric and wizard/sorc that can cast max level aid, freedom of mvt, deathward, heroes feast, summon mymidon/elemental/deva, mage armor on all summons. This burns through my spellslots and I restore them with angelic slumber, but now my whole party is fully buffed again.
These consumable lists are great, especially since I want to do a Chemist build. Still deciding what classes that'll involve (will at least have Transmutation Wizard, because I don't want to camp-cheese my alchemy). So if these tier lists are building towards a build guide, I'll be extra stoked.
I take it this means we might get a grenade or coating tier list at some point? I notice that coatings and grenades tend to be used the least out of any of my playthroughs because I forget about them outside of making DIY explosive bags.
You can throw the Dream Mist at enemys to trigger its effect, very usefull as a thrower to black hole all enemys together and then aoe stun them for 3 turns ^^
Another thing about healing potions is the fact that they also remove the bleeding and maimed conditions. This is really nice when dealing with the steel watchers.
It's great that you cover the case of adventuring longer between long rests. I think this is totally necessary for balancing fighters and casters, as well as making elixirs, potions and scrolls worthwhile. Do you have any suggestions on organic ways of limiting long rests? Normally I just go until I run out of resources, and the challenge is to balance that across the party. But I would like to do a let's play, and an organic rule for when you're allowed to rest again would be helpful for immersion.
The existence of Potion of Speed (and abundance thereof) is the only reason why I never prepare Haste spell on any of my casters. Combats rarely last more than 3 rounds while your party is hasted. Potion of Speed does not use concentration, so you are not in danger of losing the spell prematurely. Your sorcerer can use metamagic to twin Haste spell? So can my familiar, as long as my characters stand close enough to the bottle.
I didn't find potion of speed overly abundant, not enough h ears
@@danieljordan2512 Potions of Speed can be obtained from Roah in the Goblin Camp and Hyena Ears can be obtained from the herbalist woman in Myconid Colony. They can either be bought for the full price or with the 5 finger discount. Vendors restock their inventory each time you long rest (including partial) and each time you go through the level up screen (including respecs). Just save up the ears until you recruit a hireling with high WIS, medicine prof., and at least 2 lvls in transmutation wizard. Using Guidance and Enhance Ability before crafting is recommended, but optional (medicine check DC is 15).
@@danieljordan2512 The primary source I found for those was the gnoll packs in Act 1, and that's it. The rest were sold by vendors, and very rarely did they have enough to be able to craft one afterward.

I had this anxiety, the game was relatively forgiving on balanced so i never ended up using them but always felt the creeping feeling of an impossibly difficult boss that never came. Now that im a little more seasoned ive realized that so many combat encounters are either entirely skippable, avoidable, or otherwise able to be trivialized with resources that the game generously DROWN you in, that it's ok to use that speed potion liberally to speed up a combat encounter "just because."
Yeah exactly - this is one of the most Monty Haul D&D campaigns of all time - even more so than previous video games in the genre - so it pays to use all the piles of treasure you get!

Antidote is great, especially early game when not everyone has a bonus action to use every turn. Getting rid of the disadvantage from the poisoned condition is essentially the same as giving advantage which would be an outstanding potion effect.
pro tip: if you have the amulet that maximizes healing dicerolls and you have the transfer health illithid power you can maximize the value of healing potions
You can also just trade the amulet around your party. It's a bit cheesy but it feels too good not to do out of combat when it saves you so many resources healing up.

Great video although I'd put Invisibilty at S+, like, probably the best potion in the game. You can use it to initiate combat by Surprising the enemy, it allows you to sneak by p much any enemy in the game, but the single most valuable use is that you can use it to just end any combat that turns sour. The amount of Honour Mode runs those potions have saved is insane and (while I know this isn't "normal" gameplay) in lone wolf runs they're one of the most valuable resources in the game period.

For the Potion of Feather Fall, as someone who has been doing solo/duo honor mode runs, I've found them extremely useful, especially in situations where you might easily be knocked off of high ground. An example of this is the Dror Ragzlin fight, if you initiate it from the rafters, some of the goblins do have Void Bulbs, and a fall from that height, especially into the spider pit, can very much be a run ender. So I would consume one of those potions before initiating the fight.
Also, seeing Bear Halsin jump down at Dror to initiate the fight is a great "off-brand" Owlbear from the Top Rope, and allies you control & summons do have the option to drink potions directly from your inventory.
Finally, for a character with extra attack, you can spend one of those attacks to throw a potion of Feather Fall at yourself and/or an ally, in order to get decent value out of it.
And as someone who's played a Solo Ranger with Enhanced Leap & Giant elixirs, not having to worry about the elevation of the place you want to reach is just an AMAZING quality of life improvement.
Angelic Slumber is especially worth hoarding for the Mindflayer Colony and the finale since those restoration pods before the boss fights don't exist on Tactician and HM.
Anyway, Terazul is awesome! I never even noticed it before, now I'm definitely gonna keep an eye out for it.
Really? I’ve just defeated Ketheric and Myrkul in the Mindflayer Colony on Tactician and the restoration pods were definitely there. I’ve never played Honour Mode so not sure about that one.
Sounds more like it's only for Honour mode, I'm 95% sure they are still there during Tactician (and the logistics of them being removed for Tactician seem dubious as you can switch in and out of Tactician at will but you can't do that for Honour Mode, so it is way more plausible to physically alter levels for Honour mode than for Tactician). Regardless, I'm still 100% confident in saying that in my previous Tacrician runs they were present, but I haven't played in a while so maybe it changed ?

@@zorlix130 maybe. This is my first Tactician playthrough, so it’s on the most recent patch. Not sure if before they introduced Honour Mode it was different.
just played a run of honor mode and the restoration pod was there in the mindflayer colony. It was missing in the finale though, just like tactician
Invisibility potions can make the Ketheric / Apostle fight much easier.

Omg I just realized after watching this that Potion of Superior Healing has a decent chunk higher potential than a Potion of Supreme Healing. If you combine it with Periapt of Wound Closure you get 72 points of healing from the superior version! If you run Gift of the Ever Living Ones with a mod you can be nigh immortal. That’s crazy.
Basilisk oil can be used in combat in the spectator fight to gain drow to fight with you. Doesn’t really change the rating, but there is one combat use that I’ve found.
Don't forget the healing potions also remove the burning condition.
I like that you can group up and throw healing potions and heal at least 3 characters per 1 potion instead lf just one guy if you drink it
Greater healing. Yes, the ingredients cost more than the potion. However, if you're using an alchemist and get 2 potions, that's a net gain
Potion of healing can be thrown to heal multiple characters, plus it removes burning, which could potentially save a concentration.
Angelic reprieve is actually better than angelic slumber if you use it as a sorcery point hoarding potion, since long resting resets sorcery points down to sorcerer level.
Also, note that long resting resets elixir status, so if you use it in-combat, another bonus action is used for drinking elixir, and if you use it out-of-combat, you use an additional elixir.

So in the highly unlikely situation of your character being stuck in a high place in the start of combat, you CAN throw it at your feet and then jump down safely
This actually cam in clutch in a recent solo HM run. I was playing as a H-Orc Tiger Barb and took on the fight against the Spider Queen, somehow shit went sideways, and I was on 1 HP at the start of my turn against Spider Mama who was in her rage form with ~30% HP.
I threw one of these on my myself and jumped down safely into the Underdark!
I basically don't put a single point in strength on a single character. They all get to suck down strength elixirs every day. MC is typically a caster with illithid fly, so no need for strength they get bloodlust.

Also, I definitely would put Angelic Reprive on S tier. Out of cobat it gives you basically better healing than any healing potion, and it is also pretty useful for a paladin
Can you tell now with the Mind Reading potion whether you're using the potion itself or the learned spell when selecting [Detect Thoughts] from dialogue trees? I remember this was bothering me early on having it on my same wisdom character who was also trying to maintain concentration with Guidance
Based on my experience (so take this with a grain of salt), if you haven't cast detect thoughts on yourself that day and the option shows up in dialog, the game with cast it using the potion/scroll version first, with the potion being priority.
I had this happen when talking to the theives outside of the crypt in act 1. I hadn't picked up detect thoughts (the ritual spell), but I did have the potion and the scroll. The option popped up when talking to the gnome and, when I checked my inventory after, it was the potion that was gone.
Angelic Slumber resets your sorcerer points, so it's worse than Reprieve for solo sorcerer runs.
Do the angelic potions work on elves or does Fey Ancestory block the sleep?

Almost 900 hours, and I didn't know elixir of universal resistance worked as a potion and not as an elixir (which is total bullshit, why name it that way but make it work differentely from all other elixirs of resistance). And this is a total game changer, 10 turns of resistance to every type of damage is crazy strong, expecially if doesn't remove the previous elixir consumed.
Terazul is the veteran trick of the game. A lot of people don't about it and it can totally change a battle. Used on a ray of frost build ice sorcerer. 5 spells per turn (1 base + haste + elixir of bloodlust + terazul + bonus action with metamagic) is crazy. On cazador battle my durge shot 4 twinned ray of frost, with 100+ damage each and an extra cone of cold: battle endend at the second turn, the only thing that shitty vampire did was falling prone on my ice 😂

Just a question, how do people go about precasting potions or things like enhanced leap before a combat starts, without the duration ticking down massively before the combat even starts? Especially when you need to cast it on all your party members

You don't have to stockpile Feather Fall potions if you pick up pair of boots called Mystra's Grace from Arcane Tower
And their are tons of Feather Fall scrolls that apply to the entire party. The potion only works on one character. The potions are pretty useless.
does angelic slumber work with Sanctuary?
In my opinion Angelic Slumber is absolutely essential at Upper City, at least on tactician+ difficulty. And full illithid renders flying obsolete.

Does anyone else play is videos at 1.25 speed? I feel like it makes his “pauses” just seem like a quick breathe and keeps the information flowing.
Fun fact : Terazul = Zeratul easter egg from Starcraft universe.
Both potions and jumping using bonus actions hinders the potion of glorious vaulting quite substantially.
Beacon of Hope normally not very useful spell, but it makes healing from high level potions quite absurd, like all you characters have infinite bonus action Heal spell.
In my experience enhanced leap was actually better than misty step in act 3 because it can’t be counterspelled

Thinking of running a rogue assassin multiclassing into a fighter champion for crit rolls. Might dip a level in wizard or sorcerer for the shield spell. Thoughts?
Fighter/Rogue/Ranger builds are very easy to make into stronger archers.
I'd do light cleric instead for warding spell, same thing but you get more from cleric if you're not doing magic damage. I don't think champion is good but I'd definitely go 5 levels in fighter or ranger just for extra attack.
I did something similar but it was
3 assassin, 1 war cleric, 5 fighter / gloomstalker (I had 2 people on it so I did one each) and I think the rest was rogue just for uncanny dodge and maybe a feat. Feats being mobile and ability improvement. I was using bhaalist armour for the vulnerability but you mentioned shield so I guess you want to be relatively tanky, in which case pumping dex and using one of the heavy armours + shield spell (or warding glare) will make you quite tricky to hit

Why'd you do war cleric if you were doing fighter or ranger? I like war cleric but it's for the martial proficiencies and you already got those from fighter/ranger.
Me: only uses Potions like 10-20 times at most in entire 150-200 long playthrough.
Also Me: only uses Healing, Flying & Invisibility and rarely Speed Potions...

You know if they tweaked flying and made it non concentration id probably use it. I think a lot of players would too. Might just be too powerful at that point though, then again it is using a level 3 slot…. HMMMMMM.
Made redundant by a certain story choice between act 2 and 3, though you need to succeed in some persuasion party checks for party to get free flight
