A lot of HTC phones used the mini USB port for the headphone. The T-Mobile Dash from 2006, and the HTC Touchpro 2 also didn't have one. The mini USB headphones actually sounded great. Too bad you can barely find them now

Most phones during the gold age of feature phone use proprietary or unconventional audio output for headphones though Nokia was kinda of the exception as most of their models would feature a standard 3.5mm jack.

Before I am going to say that I love both apple and android, anyway the tmobile G1 and the iphone 2G are not comparable in terms of build quality the g1 was built out of plastic and had a physical keyboard (what apple was trying eliminate) while the the iPhone was made out of metal and had a very simple design. But they are both great and collectable phones

I remember the day I bought this. I walked in to pay my bill, and they had this showcased right up front. So I walked up to the desk, asked about the G1, and bought 2 of them that day. One for me, and one for my girlfriend at the time. I brought mine to work the next day to show it off, felt really cool. And then I went home and found out that my girlfriend spent the day learning how to root hers. Such an amazing phone for the time!

Such a blast from the past!!! I remember when my husband and I both got this phone back in the summer of 2009! We literally switched to T-Mobile from Verizon JUST so we could get this phone. That's how badly we wanted it after my husband's niece came to visit and she had had just gotten it! I had the white one and my husband had the black one. This was the only Android phone that I ever actually loved (yes, I have been an iPhone user since 2010). I'm pretty sure that this was the best phone on the market at the time. I LOVED the flip out physical keyboard. I could text and email like a beast on that thing! We got our first Gmail accounts when we got these phones, which we still use to this very day. So much nostalgia!

I had this phone, or at least the Canadian release (HTC Dream).
The hinge mechanism on this thing was so much fun and so well thought out. It's not just some gimmicky arched motion to look cool, when holding the phone upright in your right hand, you can push your thumb on the screen as a pivot and slide the back, opening the phone and putting it in landscape in one smooth/clean motion. More phone manufacturers need that sort of ergonomic design philosophy in mind when they are creating their phones, because the G1 set a very high bar for me, RE: smartphone design.

Here's something for those that were born into the smartphone culture and don't know much about cellphones/dumbphones in the past:
The fact that this phone does not have a standard headphone jack isn't surprising at all, despite Tim's joke. Most cellphones back then did not have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Well, perhaps previous to this, mostly in dumbphone times.
Nokia had a super shitty proprietary exposed pins connector that required either a dongle or a headphone with the proprietary connector to work, some other brands used a sub-mini standard 2.5mm jack that either required an adaptor for regular sized jacks or again, headphones specific to it, and even brands that did use 3.5mm jacks would often invert or change the pin configuration so they could sell an overpriced collection of headphones and whatnot that would only work with their own phones.
So, forcing all cellphone manufacturers to switch to a single headphone jack standard that worked regardless of branding was actually a huge win for consumers... until this stupid trend of removing them came around that is.
This is often true for most widely adopted standards. It's a very hard and very complex win for consumers that takes a very long time to happen, and corporations willing to take as much money as possible from consumers are always trying to go against.
This is why iPhones are still using a lightning jack despite Apple being part of the USB Type-C consortium, this is why headphone jacks are being removed from phones, this is why smartphone companies that have the money and capability are always trying to introduce proprietary crap on their phones.
Not because "courage", not because "more space for other proprietary crap", not because "no one uses it anymore" and all that shit. It's because they wanna lock you into purchasing their overpriced accessories, their overpriced cables, their overpriced dongles, their overpriced wall warts, their overpriced external batteries, or ones from their partners which will pay them to make it happen. They also want to force other companies to pay royalties to them, they want to stop people from using standards to produce cheaper options for consumers, they want to dominate the entire spectrum and set the prices they want instead of competing with others.
    It's the hardware walled garden.

I worked at Best Buy and was the Wireless Manager when this came out.
It blew our minds. It sold so dang well, too. Everyone wanted it.
It was fun seeing Blackberry, Apple, and ALL the random Android bullshiz going at it.
    So different nowadays.
