*Android Flashback: T-Mobile G1 by HTC unboxing and initial setup* goo.gl/5eO5zu Josh takes us through the unboxing and setup of the T-Mobile G1 by HTC in our very first Android Flashback video.
This phone might look crap today kids, but when it first came to the scene it was so badass.. This is the mother of all android phones today; PAY RESPECT!
I lost mine to a water accident a few weeks ago. I had been using it ever since 2010. I did have other phones, got the Sensation when it came out, and then the One M8, but my SIM Card never left the G1. That phone meant a lot to me, and it still does, it still sits on a stand on my desk, and I always make sure it stays clean. I have had many great memories with you my friend, and you shall never be forgotten.
This was the phone that got me interested in mobile tech on the first place! I remember being in awe of it when it first came out and dying of jealousy of anyone else who had it. It's crazy that that was so long ago.
Fantastic idea and definitely a great video. I remember when I had the G1, it was so cool because of the motion of the keyboard and the fact that it was an entirely new operating system when touchscreen smartphones were still a pretty new thing! Can't wait for the others in this mini-series! :D
Awesomely memories with the G1. The keyboard was awesome for emulators. Rooting and flashing roms constantly. Still remember constantly flashing the website for updates and Tmobile finally rolling out their 3G network.
This video is awesome man can't believe your doing this and yes I miss the keyboards to. What would even cooler is if your used the sidekick3 remember that. Now that's a throwback right there😄
Nice video ***** . I like the concept a lot and wanted to mention that I'm a big fan of the hardware keyboard. My last one was a Droid 4 and I could type very quickly with far fewer mistakes. I hope this form factor comes back at some point in higher end smartphones. I look forward to your upcoming videos about using the G1.
I would've loved to have one of these in 2008! I would've have been like "whoa, the future!", but back then I only saw the commercials and none of my friends had it, since none of them, including me, cared that much about phones back then, I cared more about PCs (I still do), gaming consoles and audio equipment, now I geek out on smartphones, simply because they are lot like PCs now but in your pocket! My waiting was well rewarded though, I got a Galaxy S2 early 2012 as my first real smartphone and whoa! I just could not look back anymore, android had come forward just enough to be awesome, and then the whole custom rom and root scene on the S2 was amazing, playing with that, installing lots of different apps, emulators, games, it was a beast even if HD phones were starting to come out that same year.
Great video! A friend of mine has one and it's a great device to have for collection if you're an Android fan. But it isn't really called original size SIM though. they're mini SIMs. Original/Standard sized SIM are credit card size. I still have my dad's old Motorola phone that takes standard size SIMs. Lol. Anyway, Mini SIM cards are still used on new budget devices like Xiaomi's Redmi series of devices too, so they're not that ancient. You can actually find SIM card adapters that adapts nano SIMs into mini SIMs straight too, which comes in handy at times. :/ Looking forward to more flashback videos!!!
I'm loving this review. I think it's so cool that in a way we get to go back in time. I remember my nephew had that phone and that time I didn't even have a phone. Lol
for that to work I would need to buy the ultimate all around smart phone which doesn't exist to my standards yet besides nexus 6 and rumored htc one m9 The 321 Show
Looking forward to new episodes. In the early days of the smartphone I was still using a flipphone until I got the Evo 4G. Still have it though I moved it to Freedompop after I got my M8.
idea, you should try using it with only apps that were available then for a week. then install on the needed apps to make it great. like Go launcher etc... my sister is still using the htc g2 and loves it. it still out features an iphone 6
I got this after the BlackBerry and it was amazing the google map and texting was good and i always felt fresh and happy to see my g1 i remember that summer was awesome my first touch screen phone
It really is bizarre picking up older smaller phones. I currently have an S5 and briefly and LG G3 before that. I took my old Bold 9780 out of the drawer and played with it. Man my hands grew giant in one second. I literally thought they grew it was crazy. Im on Tmo and thought about picking up an old MyTouchSlide or Sidekick(the last one made) Because I love slider keyboards and miss them. I also miss trackball/optical trackpads. I had the 1st Droid Incredible years ago and LOVED the trackpad. Very useful when selecting text or filling out forms. I dont see why they couldnt bring that back.
My first smartphone was the HTC Rezound. I got the wonderful Gingerbread experience. Android Market experience. And full size SIM cards. It was pretty much the last phone to have that stuff since the Galaxy Nexus came out shortly after with all the new standards.
I remember when i was 16, i started working. And i needed a phone. I had originaly gone to AT&T to get an iPhone. But for some reason decided i wanted something different. So I went to Tmobile and just played with this phone. I got it that day. This phone brought stock and I loved it. Now I got a Nexus 6.
That thing was the shiznet. I remember that. I wanted one super bad! Eventually, though, I ended up with the T-Mobile MyTouch 3g! That was my first full touch screen phone! You should do a flashback on that one!
Wow Cool .. I never seen or heard about this phone before .. I don't think this was launch in Hong Kong & definitely not in Sydney .. Thanks for Sharing 😊👍
Yep I recently bought my elder step father a cheap $10 Net10 LG 440G flip phone because he has a hard time with touch screen, and such, but it came with a full size 3G SIM card that runs on AT&T towers, and according to the sticker on the inside of the phone it was produced in January of 2014.
I had the Sidekick LX 2009 right before I got this phone in the past. I miss the fluidity of typing with a Sidekick. This couldn't compare at all, but it was pretty good for it's time. I fell in love with Android the moment I used the G1.
@Android Authority: This is actually not an "original sim card". It is miniSIM. Yep, mini. The original was size of credit card. Usually when you buy sim card you get it but people does not rember today that there were phones that took this size
I remember getting this phone and it was so bad I had to send it back at least 6 times! It always forced closed and the touchpad sucked! However it looked cool and I love the sound it made when I slid it up. :D Also I loved to type on it!
Are you gonna run down the Nexus line? I'd love to see the Nexus One and Nexus S. I didn't switch to Android until the Galaxy Nexus, and if be interested to see those older Google phones in action.
I had and still have the OG motorola droid global and now I am using a nexus 5 and 7. How time has passed and technology evolved. That's really imperssive.
Most carriers in countries in the east haven't even started using nano SIM cards yet, haha. The smallest I'll find is a micro, but even then, some carriers will still provide the outer shell for phones that still use original-sized SIM slots. :u
Waoo this right here is leyend. The one that started it all 😆😆. It was also my first smart phone. I wish i had another one like that but alil bit bigger and running lollipop
This is a great concept, good luck with not getting frustrated hahaha. Physical keyboards are only as great as the attention put into them by the manufacturer. The G1 keyboard has an inefficient layout as well as poor overall button feel and actuation. So not a good representation of a physical keyboard, but at least the whole process of sliding up the screen to type is fun.
Could you do a flashback on Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 or Nokia N900? Back in 2008 X1, N900, G1 and first iPhone were somewhat of a representations where smartphones could go after Symbian started to fall apart. Do a flashback of last hurrahs of mobile platforms which failed once Android and iOS started to rule the industry. In 2008 you could choose between first iOS, last of Windows Mobile (6.1 or 6.5), Symbian UIQ on Samsung phones or Symbian S60 on Nokia phones, Maemo on N900 (that was a good one, but simply lacked any support) and first of Android on G1.
man I wanted that phone when it first came out. But then I thought the SideKick LX 09 was cooler. Well due to its keyboard. Then thought to myself it wouldve been cooler with the touchscreen like the G1. Man! lol. But a few months later I sold it and got me the the HTC MyTouch 3G. I fell in love with that android phone. That was a beast when it first released back then. lol I think google and HTC shouldve release a G3 with physical keyboard. Im pretty sure there would be people still wanting it. Who doesn't miss those keyboards! Just saying.
I would still buy it if it were available in my country (Indonesia). I love sliding phone and clamshell/flip phone. Nothing more dramatic than to end your phone call with a dramatic shut or dramatic slide after sending off a heated argumentative message..
Rime23525 hmmmmm udah jarang kayaknya deh. Coba Andromax Chat. Klo mau yang nyaman banget ngetiknya pake BB Q10 atau Q5 aja. Bisa pake Android walaupun ga bisa pake Google Service :v
Flash back 4 me to, got this 3 weeks after launch. Version 0.9 or something not official 1.0 yet, didn't have touch keyboard yet! That came in latter! The physical keyboard was awesome and I totally miss it :( nevertheless the size and weight is more important.. big jump latter to the nexus one. No jump was so noticeable ever since. .

Josh takes us through the unboxing and setup of the T-Mobile G1 by HTC in our very first Android Flashback video.
I had one of those, and it was a great phone ~
once updated its specs, the G1 would still make a great transition device for the ex-blackberry users
I bet it had a better keyboard than the IBM PC Jr!
Cool
My G1 was the size of a brick when I had it in a case.
We need a modern remake of this. I would buy all of them.
This phone might look crap today kids, but when it first came to the scene it was so badass.. This is the mother of all android phones today; PAY RESPECT!
how much?

Rebel! Love the Mini-Ish Review, and really like the series too. keep on rockin'
This video is awesome man can't believe your doing this and yes I miss the keyboards to. What would even cooler is if your used the sidekick3 remember that. Now that's a throwback right there😄
Awesome idea Josh! I really look forward to the follow up!
Loved and hated my G1
The sidekick was my first phone and I loved it so much! Everyone would always tell me that I had a badass phone

still got mine. still works.
Nothing was as awesome as having the Tmobile sidekick, also known as the Danger Hiptop. It was the coolest phone around in its day.
YESSS. This is awesome. Do more of these for sure!
I would've loved to have one of these in 2008! 4:15: Is that a *Superuser* icon?!
I remember when I had a regular phone with a keyboard and my friend had this, now I have a moto X 2014 and he has a nexus 6.....i keep losing ha
Haha you should just wait till he gets a new phone and go one up on him.
for that to work I would need to buy the ultimate all around smart phone which doesn't exist to my standards yet besides nexus 6 and rumored htc one m9 The 321 Show
I friend with the same first and last name lol he lives in Massachusetts
***** Note 4 ? Note Edge ?..
Nah I can't afford either at the moment Shinya Kogami
I had this phone ... bring back so much memories
I loved this when ever i saw this in shops when i was a wee little boy , always had a go on it in shops.
I used a G1 until July 2011. Nice phone in it's day.
Yes, my first smartphone. I LOVE IT! I didn't expect that the android will be so much popular.

As far as phones go, nothing left an impact on me more than the original V3 Razr...the profile...the awesome keypad...that blew my mind back then lol
That was my first Android phone! And that battery life is going to make you pull your hair off man!
My first smartphone, first Android. Back in 2009. Wow time flies
Keep these flashback videos coming!!!!! Awesome!!! Please do the HTC Kaiser!!
Looking forward to new episodes. In the early days of the smartphone I was still using a flipphone until I got the Evo 4G. Still have it though I moved it to Freedompop after I got my M8.
That’s such a clean G1. I’ve been looking for a clean white one in 2020 and it’s damn near impossible
idea, you should try using it with only apps that were available then for a week. then install on the needed apps to make it great. like Go launcher etc...
my sister is still using the htc g2 and loves it. it still out features an iphone 6
OMG i had this phone when it came out!! the memories!
Great series, do more!

I would love to see a modern incarnation of the G1 by HTC. It would be beautiful!

My friend still uses the G1 and its still good for him.
Wow Cool .. I never seen or heard about this phone before .. I don't think this was launch in Hong Kong & definitely not in Sydney .. Thanks for Sharing 😊👍
Normal sized sim cards are not that old, they are still used in new cheap to normal priced phones

They need to remake this phone with updated hardware. I loved all the buttons and size of the phone itself.
Great idea! I can't wait for more. :)
I remember getting this phone and it was so bad I had to send it back at least 6 times! It always forced closed and the touchpad sucked! However it looked cool and I love the sound it made when I slid it up. :D Also I loved to type on it!
Original full size sim cards are the size of credit card. The size you're talking about is the mini sim.
Are you gonna run down the Nexus line? I'd love to see the Nexus One and Nexus S. I didn't switch to Android until the Galaxy Nexus, and if be interested to see those older Google phones in action.
Oh my God! So many memories!!!
Ahhhh the g1. I remember all the app crashes like it was yesterday. We stuck witn it and here we are years later experiencing lollipop like bosses.
I had and still have the OG motorola droid global and now I am using a nexus 5 and 7. How time has passed and technology evolved. That's really imperssive.
Android Flashback? amazing idea!
HTC needs to remake this phone, but with today's technology and design! I would buy it in a heartbeat!
It's not just girls is also increased technology within newer Sims
Omg, where did you get this Big Hero 6 figure?
And yeah, awesome vid man!
How things have changed in seven years.
I still have my G1!
Where have you been man ? We missed you
I'd highly suggest making a video about the Dell Streak (aka Dell Mini 5). Very early phablet! Really interesting device.
Is the "Market" still working on that?
Most carriers in countries in the east haven't even started using nano SIM cards yet, haha. The smallest I'll find is a micro, but even then, some carriers will still provide the outer shell for phones that still use original-sized SIM slots. :u
Interesting seeing you here
Waoo this right here is leyend. The one that started it all 😆😆. It was also my first smart phone. I wish i had another one like that but alil bit bigger and running lollipop
"Back then" Haha as if it was years and years and years ago. damn how everything changed in just a couple of years, AMAZING.
The doll behind him, is that Baymac from Big Hero 6?
Awesome idea! Great vid, thanks :)
Do the Motorola Backflip! I loved that phone. Really wish they would redo that design, with updated hardware of course, 4.5 in screen maybe.
I remember envying my friend in middle school who had the T-Mobile Sidekick lol
Please more of Android Flashback !
I'de like to see the first galaxy s Aka i9000 :)

I remember for working at sitel and this phone was top notch we all messed around with it training lol
In the past: yo,the screen is huge, wow a physical keboard :o coolest phone ever.
I remember having this phone (in black). In Australia it was called the HTC Dream.
This series sounds very promising
My mum had one back in the day!
Would love an modern phone like this. With an slide out qwerty keyboard and miniB charger. But with slimmer bezels =)
@Iran Lievanos those are Versace lightweights.
That is a mini sim. The original simcard was actually the size of a credit card if I remember correctly
man I wanted that phone when it first came out. You should do a review on the software!
When the Samsung Galaxy S6 releases, you should this segment for the GS3 because it's the fastest selling Android phone so far
I would still buy it if it were available in my country (Indonesia). I love sliding phone and clamshell/flip phone. Nothing more dramatic than to end your phone call with a dramatic shut or dramatic slide after sending off a heated argumentative message..
Iya tapi model slide keyboard kayak gitu suka delay ngelag gitu ngetiknya. Makanya ga dikembangin lagi.
Motorola droid 4 razr juga sliding keyboard, banyak di kaskus yg jualan BNIB stock lama maupun second.. hape lama dah lumayan speknya buat jaman sekarang sekalipun.
Utomo Widiyasa Memang, tp tetep aja feel n experience nya beda di tangan.. :D
Dgn perkembangan teknologi jaman skrg, bisa sebetulnya di buat lagi yg lbh canggih dan stabil.
Rime23525 hmmmmm udah jarang kayaknya deh. Coba Andromax Chat.
The Legend of android phones
great transition!
HTC G1 rebirth would be freaking awesome.
Do it HTC, do it!
My first smartphone.
No jump was so noticeable ever since. .
how the hell you found the original packed piece todya?
Incredible !
