I remember being absolutely blown away by this phone, and Android in general. It had some pretty frustrating limitations, but even at the time it felt like a blueprint for some pretty amazing changes to come in the tech world. I remember the battery life being comically bad, to the extent that I purchased a massive battery that stuck so far out, it had to come with its own backplate that made the phone hilariously chunky. But at least it finally got me through the day!
In the book "Losing the Signal", RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis is actually quoted as saying, "It's hard to type on a piece of glass." One of the many mistakes that lead to the death of BlackBerry phones. They still exist, but now BlackBerry is a security software company, and Lazaridis no longer works with BlackBerry. And current BlackBerry CEO John Chen left recently. Speaking of RIM, do you plan on making a retro review on any BlackBerry phones, meaning the classic proprietary-OS ones like the 7100 and Pearl 8130? Those would be so cool to see on your channel.
04:18 i've got one today, ridiculously cheap, less than a dollar, and it worked but the touchscreen doesnt want to work, so, that trackball is the only way to use it, if it wasnt for that trackball the phone would have been 100% useless!
I remember saving up to buy this phone as a nerdy teen haha. My first android phone. I put it through hell at the time lol I remember trying to flash all sorts of different custom os's but settled on CyanOS.
No other phones at the time had autofocus. It was the stand out feature. Also one of the best keyboards on any device. Most devices that followed used a grid layout for the keyboard instead of a traditional staggered design. Basically you could type by feel on this whereas on other phones you had to look where your fingers were going. I wish they'd bring this form factor back with todays hardware (OLED, narrower bezels, thinner device overall).
You don't have anywhere near the number of subscribers you deserve. When you hit it big, I'm gonna be proud to call myself Number 79. Awesome quality work, your passion really shines though.
Even after all these years android can’t stand alone. In a video to show off how android started it somehow got compared to the iPhone. I understand saying at the time the phone came out here’s what was out. But not the repetition of the comparison going forward. It turned into a versus.
Yeah I see what you're saying. The reason I did this is because when I'm reviewing old phones, I often like to take a look at them in the same way someone would have back when this phone was introduced, and with the T-Mobile G1, the phone people would be comparing this to would be the iPhone 3G. Not only that, but I feel the best way to give some perspective on a phone is to compare it to its biggest competitor. With the T-Mobile G1, though, the iPhone wasn't just its biggest competitor, it was also their biggest motivation. Apple's ingenuity with the iPhone forced other companies to work hard to create real competition, so they really deserve some credit here. I hate to say all of this since I am now a staunch Android fan, but I can't deny the iPhone played a key part in the invention of Android devices.
I got this phone in the 9th grade, and I hands down had the coolest phone in my grade lol. I have the zflip6 now. Still chasing that G1 feel 🤣 So there's another phone I had, that I can't seem to find when I google it. PLS HELP! You could use it in a 3D mode. The pictures were 3D and it was cool a f

Still my favorite phone. It was in a league of it's own.
I miss that phone so bad. I am typing from my Zflip 5. This phone feels kind of like that phone made me feel. It's was so different and cool.
I am so tempted to pick up a Zflip now

Thanks for the comment, and I absolutely have plans to review more BlackBerry devices in the near future. Stay tuned!
well he wasnt wrong. tactile keyboards are much better.
Great job, you really upped your production level compared to first videos on the channel!
Thank you very much! I'm always trying to improve, and I'm glad you think it shows!
Great video I love how you do a deep dive on the classic phones.

Yes! I still think the trackball is a great way to navigate around the phone.
You're so underrated, man. You deserve way more subs...
Thank you so much! I appreciate the support 🙏

@@techshowyt very well answered my friend. Keep up the good work. Hustle on!
@@The905Studios I appreciate it, and thanks for watching the channel! More videos coming soon!
He is definitely biased that was one of the best phones out it was much better than the Apple phone at that particular time
The flagship smartphones of today are significantly more powerful than the computers of 2008
absolutely, vista-era gpus will struggle to play HD video and cpus would struggle to do some modern browsing
still a great phone to use in 2024

To this day I don't understand why people crap on physical keyboard phones. Its been 15 years and I STILL hate software keyboards.
I guess it's all perspective, that iPhone is fucking disgusting next to the G1.
Lmao bro I HATED this phone it glitched so hard
You're bugging dude, the Android G1 was way better than any iPhone at that time.
The screen was smaller though.
@@G.Freeman92 who cares.
