Monasteries (Cloisters) Don't score "at the end of the game" they score as soon as they are completed. Same with gardens. I've just started playing Carcassonne and when I watched this video I thought I was playing wrong!
Just for the record, your scoreboard is actually a pretty unique version that does not reflect the mass-market version, which had brown spaces and all spaces were numbered.
Spring tile and Lake tile, don't count as turns. You put spring first and then the first player starts the game. Same with the Lake. Last tile before the Lake is considered player's turn. After that, the Lake finishes the river automatically and then the next player takes his turn with regular tiles. If you played it correctly, there shouldn't be meeples on a spring or a Lake.
Yeah, my first thought when i saw the new artwork was "yikes". Really garish. Too much detail, too much contrast of blue towers, white walls and really dark and muddy brown inside the towns. And the roads so plainly white look out of place. Also don't like so much detail in the fields. Maybe that's because they made farmers only a variant.. But you can get accustomed to it. By the end of the video i though OK of it. But i won't get rid of my copy with original art! :)
I starting collecting Carcassonne and its expansions just before they began re-printing them all. It's good to see that the tiles look good in the new edition, my main dislike is that I prefer the more cartoonish box art of the old editions.
It's probably worthwhile to note that the River actually comes with a lot of base games - I actually have an English first edition from Rio Grande that comes with it, so you'll have a good chance of getting it even by picking up an older copy (or a used one) Also, while I agree that overall the artwork seems better, the cities seem too dark to me in this new edition. With the more pronounced artwork on the houses and the greater density of them, a paler background (maybe some cobblestone pattern) would've been better graphically. Oh and yes, that's definitely Christina Applegate. Nice catch!
These comparison videos are some of my favorite things that The Dice Tower puts out (Star Wars Risk is still my favorite and most useful). Thank you Sam. I gotta ask, is a comparison video of TI1, TI2, and TI3 possible?
Eric Finley At the setup, each player draws 3 tiles. When it's your turn, you play one of those and draw another one, refilling your hand to 3. I also suggest that you use something that is optional at least in the digital version I've played: Keeping the total number of available tiles a multiple of the number of players, so everyone will have access to the same amount of tiles throughout the game. Remove tiles face-down and keep them out of the game if needed. Anyway, having always 3 options to play in your turn adds more strategy, reduces the luck factor and very often the downtime as well.
Fester Blats Everyone is entitled to his own opinion. Have you tried with 3 tiles? Because I have tried both in order to decide which one I liked most.
I don't see how it could do anything but improve the game. I played it the other day with my kids and it's great. All it does is give you options. How could it ruin the game?
Yeah, I'm going to agree with most people here and say I like my older version more. I'm really annoyed at how hard it's going to be to find the expansions now, too.
I like how they removed the farmer rules form the basic game. The problem with the farmers is not the scoring method at the end, is their power if you let a player dominate fields unchecked. And it becomes a constant struggle specially if there are too many complete castles in the fields because whoever dominates the fields will have a huge boost in the score. You lock up meeples trying to overtake or split fields and the game stalls.
+Igor Freitas I was going to teach the original game without the farmers more because to me it was kinda hard for me to pick out farms on JCloisterZone (to the point of playing with the farm filter on). But, as I was playing the first game I decided to keep farmers in...and saw that it was pretty easy to judge if a farm was occupied or not.
I haven't played without farmers since I first taught the game at my FLGS and then my family. And this was a thrifted edition of the classic Carcassonne (but then I bought the new one when I saw it went over VERY well with my family)
they are not removed, they are just made optional. y problem with the farmers is that it's hard to keep track of wich fields have allready been claimed by players. me and my friends have the rule that if no one notices that a meeple is incorrectly placed until it's once again your turn that it can stay on the board, but that also is a bit unfair when we get to the final scoring. maybe if we have some more experience with the farmers we will use them more, but for now we stick to the basic
Prefer the older artwork very much. It looks more pastel and easy on the eyes. Fields in this one have too much detail. Maybe that's because farmers are only variant. I love farmers, so that's another detraction for the changed rules (Carcassonne seems to be the game which most rules changes:)). But i like the scorepad. It is not an essential part of Carcassonne and as i more often count my points in my mind and then move a pawn accordingly, this is annoying with the original scorepad to have to do it manually all the time and constantly checking if no error was done. Btw, river expansion was already in my older version (which i bought in 2009).
I actually have most of the original series. I was thinking of selling off the old sets, and buying the new ones. However, it looks like they are taking their time putting out new versions, and the artwork is actually prefereable in the original series
I think, I would never have bought this game if the only available version would be the new one. It reminds me of Automania. A game that seems to be very good, but i know, that with the artwork I would almost never get this game to the table. The new Carcassonne artwork seems also too colorful and too playful. However thanks for the comparison and for the review of those small expansions, they seem to be fun so i might pick em up someday. :)
@@wimboeren4639 insofar as you gave an incomplete, over simplistic answer which was not correct in its entirety. That's the potential for other's confusion.
I really dislike the new art, it looks too much like one of those farmville fantasy knockoffs games from Facebook. Is there a way to get the abbot expansion alone? My version on Carcassonne is 2 years old and only blrings the river expansion. Also bought 2 expansions without knowing there was a re-print and i was really confused about the abbot the first one added for the sixth player only xd
The new edition of Carcassonne in this video looks really saturated. My copy is pretty bearable. I still like the older art more, but the new version doesn't look that bad in practice.
I get people have personal opinions but people are seriously being so over-dramatic about the artwork. It's about the gameplay and acting like the artwork somehow ruins the game is rediculous. I like the new artwork and prefer it over the muddy rough handrawn artwork, but hey... that's my opinion. I play the game in both styles regularly without throwing a fit.
But the game is inherently visual. Complaining about disliking the artwork makes sense, just as it would if we were talking about pictionary. There's gameplay to discuss, yes, but you'll be staring at these tiles for a long time.
I must say that the new tiles have a very big drawback in that they don't go well with all the expansions that were published. The tiles might look fancier, but even there I must say I prefer the plainer look of the original ones. All in all, my opinion is that it was a bad publishing move.
I posted this comment before I saw that expansions are being revamped as well. Yet I still stand by what I said. Even if all expansions are republished with the new look, including mini and promo expansions, there are people who won't be able to get all they want from one art style only, either because of unavaiability or because they already have some from one art style. Independently from saying which art is better, which is a matter of opinion, still it is a bad move.
What? Old version much better!! More a tale illustration... like a tale story... Contrast the complexity of the game with a cute and tale illustrations... The new is more realistic illustrations and for me more average feeling... nothing special... more mainstream for all public and I understand but sad for me. For me cacassonne must have a unique identity... if you want to change illustrations create it but with unique and magic magnetism...
With all these reprints it's a shame they can't overhaul the time consuming end of game scoring system. That's what put me and wife off from getting this game after watching it on tabletop.
The new artwork is just plain ugly. This game has an inherent problem with perspective. Walls are not displayed from a top-down view (which could have saved the new edition), but from a side view (almost isometric). And multiple different perspectives happen to occur on a single tile. The old cartoonish style removed some of the tension out of these clashing perspectives. The new, more detailed look makes these mismatches more visible. Also, the colors are really weird and don't look pleasing at all. Too much contrast and no sense for color harmony. So if you think this looks more pleasing to the eyes, I have to politely inform you, that your glasses are broken.
Definitely not worth to actually update your game. Not very different from the old one. I mean the only way id update my game is if they really went into detail with those houses and all...like I mean super fine detail,,then it would be something to consider...but this is really just a minor color change and a few minor detail changes... blah.
just call it for what it is. it's a cash grab. all my previous expansions are now worthless if i want to upgrade. i refuse to spend all that money rebuying new art. I'm extremely dissapointed in zman
+Christopher Wood I use all of the old expansions with the new base game and new art of the Zman Carcassonne without any issues. Sure, the art doesn't match up between the 2 versions but that doesn't bother me. We have 4 old expansions and just throw all of the tiles in a bag so any possible differences in the back of the tile is negated.
+Christopher Wood It's more of a Hans-im-Gluck thing than a Z-man thing, really, especially with the old artist dropping off from the game IIRC. It is also pretty hard to find the original editions of the expansions for now
Fester Blats There is a color change for the 6th player in Carcassonne 2 from Gray to Pink. So, I can see the basis of that argument. But it wouldn't really matter in expansions 3, 4, and 8 as those don't add any player meeples, either player agnostic meeples or bits like the towers, bridges, and castles

Adding all the numbers to the scoring board is helpful, but they should have dropped the opacity to about 25 - 35%
Good suggestion!
They should also have made the 3-tiles-in-hand variant official. I only play this way, it's really bad to depend on luck of the draw every turn.

Eric Finley At the setup, each player draws 3 tiles. When it's your turn, you play one of those and draw another one, refilling your hand to 3.
