7 Times You Failed a QTE and Looked Like an Hilarious Dummy

- In order for the interactive cutscenes we call quick time events to actually be interactive, there has to be a consequence for when you fail to hit that button - sometimes, it's a humiliating pratfall. Take Heavy Rain's FBI Agent Norman Jayden, for one. He's known around the agency as the world's least competent agent in a foot pursuit. Or at least he is if you managed to miss more or less every button prompt in the QTE sequence in the video above, in which he chases down a fleeing suspect. Do so, and you turn Heavy Rain from a gritty thriller into a comedy masterpiece.
Chris Redfield, on the other hand, can thank his partner Sheva for mucking up in the Resident Evil 5 QTE in the video above.
Just as Newton's third law tells us for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction, for every QTE outcome where you look like an unstoppable action god, there's an equal and opposite outcome where you look like a numpty, with a neck snapped by Albert Wesker, and are dead. Sorry, Chris.
Shenmue 2's Ryo Hazuki joins him in the QTE hall of humiliation by failing to walk while carrying a stack of books, along with Lara Croft, who appears to forget to shoot the T-rex charging right at her in one QTE snafu in Tomb Raider Anniversary.

'An' can be used before a word that begins with an H where the first syllable is unstressed e.g. an hotel, an historian, an hilarious. At least it cleverly distracted you all from Mike's mispronunciation of Shenmue... ;)

keg504 Grammar does not change between speaking and writing. Saikou "Stressed" is not the same as "pronounced." The 'h' was pronounced, but the first syllable was not stressed. The second one was. All that being said, I personally can't stand it when someone uses 'an' before a word that starts with 'h.' Perhaps you can say it, technically, but you still sound like a boob.

I played it on PSP and the woman did NOT have bulged eyes but n the words of that lady "I'm going to die" as I look at spider losers burning corpse.
The "I'm going to die," Spider-Man moment will forever be my favorite QTE failure. Spider-Man's belly flop, the woman's line delivery, the perfect comedic timing of it all - just **chef's kiss** brilliant.
There was a QTE in assassin's creed where Leonardo DaVinci tried to hug me but I was too slow.. The disappointment on his face haunts me to this day..
In Assassin's Creed 2 failed the quick time event where you walk into Ezio's house and someone hits you over the head with a vase. I was like "u fokin wot m8? I'll rek u"

That, the coffe from the thieves guild guy I cant remember the name. The scene with the pazzi sister at the begining to blow the candle. AC2 QTEs were all weird and made you look stupid if you don't get them in the 0.5s they appear

The most traumatizing failed QTE occurred to me while I was playing Assassin's Creed II. I was shoveling food into my mouth as a cutscene played, as you do, when Leonardo goes in for a hug, which for some reason, requires a button press? I ended up spilling my food everywhere as I lurched for the button, and I still missed the event. Which doesn't make Ezio look so much like an idiot as it does a complete asshole when Leo's smile fades and he awkwardly drops his arms, looking all forlorn.
This keeps me up at night.
Yeah and it was just after such a hard mission too, so I didn't want to load a previous save :/

The Spider-Man 3 one never fails to make me laugh. Took me a good ten minutes to compose myself when I first played it.
I always thought the devs made it hilarious on purpose. There's no way they couldn't have. Every single one of the failed QTE's make Spider-Man look like a complete dumbass. Hahaha!

Soilers for RE5 ending.
So, I was fighting Wesker in the middle of a volcano, pumping his face full of all my bullets in my possession (And I'm one to stockpile.)
And then proceeded to spend about an hour knifing him and running away, until I finally realized you had to initiate a QTE to kill him, at a point I reached within a minute or two of fighting.

You guys put a qte fail from Until Dawn but not the one where Josh tries to high five Sam and if you fail it he just gets left hanging? It's the saddest I've ever been to miss a qte, including the several times I got characters in that game brutally killed for the same reason.

I've never seen the QTE failed at that part of RE5.

I've always been good at QTEs thanks to the days of old with Shenmue back on the dreamcast so I never had the issue with the Spider Man games and always got it right on the first try so I never had a clue just how hilarious those fails where lol, kudos.
I remember playing the zeppelin level in The Order 1886, where I was in the kitchen area and had to grab and knife one of the enemies there. I missed the QTE, grappled at air and got shot in the head while being spread out on the kitchen counter like a pathetic moron. Good times.

It's actually not grammatically incorrect to say "An" before a word beginning with H, even when that H is pronounced, though it sounds awkward, and though we rarely do it in American English, it's pretty common in British English.
As a Brit... no, no it's not. I get where you're coming from, there are a few cases where "an" would be arguably correct. But "An Hilarious Dummy" just... isn't right.
When I say both out loud, "An" sounds better than "a."

I always liked the QTE fail screens in Lollipop Chainsaw. Juliet ninja-flips around chainsawing zombies in half all day long only to stop all momentum and watch an easily-avoidable streetlamp slowly fall onto her twintailed skull.
How could you forget about Beyond Two Souls? The way Jodie ran head first into the obstacle at her CIA training made her.... well me, look stupid as hell. XD
If you do a commenter's edition of this video: the latter levels in Sonic Unleashed have QTEs that send Sonic plummetting to his demise if he fails them. Pretty embarrassing, I must say.

The first example, "Heavy Rain", looks like it would be a great idea to record and upload the whole sequence with failed button-clicks, it would be an awesome hilarious watch; and I think the devs had this in mind when they put it together. Somebody most likely have already made such a video. If anybody knows of such a video, please leave the link - I'd love to watch it.

I literally spent like an hour playing that Spider-Man: Web of Shadows QTE with Black Cat failing on purpose because it was so ridiculous. You just verfied that I am not crazy for doing so.
The best part of the until dawn ones is that it's the actor who does Agent Ward from Agents of SHIELD. So, basically I see a highly trained hydra agent forgetting to duck under a tree branch...Priceless.

QTE's In my opinion are just shit. They're boring when you do well and infuriating when you fail, cause failure means either autofail or nothing at all. Like the heavy rain one you could fail every single QTE and still complete the level, So why bother with them in the first place?
There are some games which use them well. God of War uses them in a way which immerse you in action rather than distancing you from it, for instance, and some games use them to introduce an action elements in games where a full action minigame would be out of place.
They're sadly in the minority...
TheScholesie09 You should really look into either Asuras Wrath or the Naruto Ultimate Storm games. CC2 (the devs of those games) do incredible jobs making QTEs fun and weighty. They feel IMPORTANT but also don't just throw you into a "You Failed" screen if you miss it.
QTE's as a mechanic can work if they are better built into the gameplay, as Timothy noted, God of War is one notable example.
Another is No More Heroes where all the QTE's are built into the gameplay and the game even pauses for you during them so they never move forward until you do them from memory. As much as a lot of RE's reaction commands irritate, the ones in combat like for a punch when you shoot an enemy in the knee is an example of a good QTE.
The bad ones however are the ones like the ones that are unforgiving in reaction time, the ones that come the fuck out of nowhere and the ones where they are just unnecessary (I'm looking at you Dying Light final boss).

QTEs are not bad, just sometimes badly used. Have to quickly press a button to avoid failure is something that gamers do in many games without realize. Like fightining games or any that you need to do combos, or jumping platforms.
The problem is that they don't warn players in a cut scene, when we usually rest our hands to enjoy it, and give too short time to recover.
Or worst, when done on PC, when they just don't get how keyboard and mouse players can quickly respond to it, by throwing a bunch of grey button pressing on the screen. Seriously, there is a big difference when holding a controller (less buttons, color, symbols/less characters, both hands holding while every button is near your fingers).
The Spiderman fails were amazing;. comedy gold.

Some of the best failed QTEs I've seen are in TellTale's Jurassic Park: The Game. There's so many good ones, like becoming a human kabob in the middle of a Triceratops/T. Rex fight, blundering at any point during a knife fight against a Velociraptor (no seriously, this happens) but the cream of the crop has to be trying to escape the Rex at the docks at the end of the game when you slip and get your head crushed between two shipping crates. Fun times.
Tomb Raider on the 360 was probably the first qte (with prompts) game I played. Missed them all first time :D
