    Lately Canon is bashed as soon as their new offerings come out. What happens as time goes on, some discover that even though Canon does not have all of the bells and whistles, what it does have works well. Remember the 6D MK II. Panned at the start, but as time went on some vloggers discovered it worked pretty well for that purpose. I believe there is a trend where buying a camera with all of the features is not as important as having a camera that does what you need well. Other brands have nice things that Canon doesn't, but in my opinion at the end of the day, what Canon has fits the needs of most of what we need to do.

      1 word: Canon Lenses

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think people just hate monopolies, which is natural. Yes there's Nikon, but even they aren't even close to an equal market share. Canon has always been established as the Mount Olympus with all the others being mere mortals. But in Canon's case, what you say really is true. There are just some things they've never been touchable on, the biggest being lenses which is arguably the most important element in photography. Color science can be corrected by using a ColorChecker passport. Ergonomics can be sucked up. But you can't sharpen a less sharp lens. You can't use a filter that makes a lesser lens render better color and contrast before the light even hits the sensor. Canon's lenses were already top, and with the RF lenses, they're now far exceeding the EF L lenses. Other companies have lenses that are constantly improving, but they're always many steps behind Canon.

Never got used to the colors and most of my time spent in grading is just fighting Sony's weird colors. Tried a couple of shots with the EOS R and am already sold. Going to try 10-bit today, but 8-bit in the EOS R is already awesome for grading.

    Bought my R November of last year. Been using it in conjunction with my trusty 1D MK IV and an 80D when I want longer reach. More and more though, the R is taken out of the case over the other cams due to its absolutely fantastic image quality and focus speed and accuracy when taking pictures of the grand kids and all the activities we find ourselves on. I recently used the R combined with a Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art to shoot the Milky Way from Kauai. Love the images and its dead simple to use long exposure noise reduction as is with most Canon cameras these days.

    I had Canon DSLR for years, switched to A7Rii, awesome sensor, but the feel and effort to get what I wanted for stills was never as relatively effortless as my older bodies. An m50 I had on the side made me realise Canon mirrorless could work and I kept going back to the m50 over the Sony despite the massive difference in technical capabilities. Geez I wanted to love the Sony but it didn’t stick. I have now moved to the R (so glad I didn’t sell my EF L holy trinity) and a Fuji with small primes for grab and shoot on the street. Am shooting more often, having much more fun, getting great images with minimal effort. Can’t ask for more than that as a hobbyist.

    • @korrze
      @korrze 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wesley Chapman honestly it’s kind of a situation type choice. If you want a camera that has everything you need for professional freelance work, the Sony a7iii will be your best friend. If you want to go the content creator route, the EOS R has been amazing to me. I just bought it a few days ago.
      Sony has relatively low bitrates so 1080p doesn’t looks great and sometimes I want only 1080. I always did pro work in 4K and proxy workflow isn’t fun sometimes. Also, I found myself VERY often fighting to get good colors when grading. Zombie skin tones too often.
      The EOS R literally feels so good in the hand. It makes me WANT to shoot. The ergonomics and menu usability is SO easy and fast. Straight out of camera with my profile dialed, canon colors truly are a thing. Footage looks so good off the bat. So less editing in post. I also really needed high bitrate 1080p and flip screen cause I’m quitting freelance and pursuing TH-cam next.
      TLDR: a7iii for pro work, eos r for content creating

      @@korrze Thanks so much for such a thorough reply! I'm looking to upgrade to one or the other and keep going back and forth. I like the Sony for the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75mm lenses, but I already have a sigma 18-35mm for canon which would be a lot of fun on the EOS R. End of the day I'm really just looking to have a fun time photographing and maybe putting out some content, nothing professional any time soon. Also, Canon just feels a bit stingy to me as a brand these days and that sort of rubs me the wrong way, where as Sony I feel really gives people everything they're asking for. My main genre is street style/urban style portraits, doing it for living. For me, it is absolutely a must, to have a great starting point for post processing, without having to do lot of tweaking. I just apply some presets and it's pretty much good to go. For this, the R has been invaluable.
    It also has INCREDIBLE jpeg output, which is crucial, because I can immediately deliver the jpegs to my clents after the shoots, and they already look amazing. It has possibly increased the number of photos that they purchase from each shoot, so don't underestimate the power of great looking JPEGs.
    In the last 6 months I have taken more than 45.000 photos with my R and I can say, that the face detect is extremely reliable, there has been really really few misfocuses, maybe like 1% or even lower.

    Bought one a few days ago and it's the best decision I could have made. Same as you, I wanted something compact that shoots great photo and video. I don't really care about downsize 4k or the crop. I want superior color, color grading, lens ecosystem. After their new firmware came out with the eye tracking (I vlog) that was it for me. Immediately bought it. Something that you don't think about until you use it is that Canon's flip out screen offers touch menus, not just touch focus, (unlike Sony where the touch screen is just for focus). So when I film myself for my channel or vlogging, I don't have to get up and walk around the camera. Nor do I have to turn it around to hit actual buttons while walking around. This was a GAME-CHANGER for me.

In a couple of years, Canon EOS R will be remembered as Canon's first not-so-good mirrorless camera and it also won't be remembered for much innovation, and the market also shows that people much more choose the Sony A7III for many good reasons!

  • @DonGutierrez
    @DonGutierrez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Owning an A7RIII, A7III, and an EOS R, I can see definitely the merit and appeal of owning an EOS R. I initially was very critical of the video specs on it, but owning one now and Into my first month I definitely softened my critique of it, and have grown to really, really love it. For both photos and video, its a joy to shoot with, and can easily slot with other setups.
    Ultimately, I think there's a fair amount of tradeoffs for each system, and it does also depend on the work you do. Photography wise, I wouldn't trade the two card slots because I've had an SD card fail on me, and having that backup is invaluable. And at higher ISOs, I do think Canon's fall apart way faster, and thus value the Sony's ability to keep it clean. But the EOS R has a much nicer grip, a better EVF compared to the Mark III series of the all the A7 cameras, solid photography features akin to the 5D series, and underrated video specs (I'm eager to pair this with an Atomos), make it a keeper in my book, and I'm happy to own one.
    That said though, I still don't agree with a lot of people about Sony colors being so starkly different to the point of having to do hoops and hurdles, for photos. While the "Canon look" is nice, it's not the end-all, be-all for photography, and you can easily get fantastic skin tones on a Sony with very minor tweaking. From a filmmaking standpoint, however, I'd agree more that it's trouble to grade, especially when stretching out the colors in post; matching profiles sometimes is a straight-up pain in the ass.
    4K full frame is great, but I would say for people who want to grade or match footage, the winner would be an EOS R over the Sony's, especially with its deeper megabit rate.

    • @DonGutierrez
      @DonGutierrez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZaaM1 Gotcha! I'm happy to provide my opinions on it, based off personal use.
      So in terms of video, I'd say straight out of the box, without any tweaks with picture profiles, the Canon wins for video colors by a small margin. That's strictly if, and only if, you don't layout settings to adjust it.
      But nobody who takes their craft seriously uses base settings without personal touches. I've actually liked the EOSHD HDR for A7III/RIII cameras and have felt the tweaks have removed some of the weird color shifts I have in Sony's colors (for example, the base Sony had some orange midtones in a Red shirt that I felt were off versus the EOSHD profile that looked much more appealing). I've done some mild talking heads for documentaries and other fun projects and found this profile to be quite nice, and pretty on par if not better with the results I get on a Canon. But this is my opinion, others may not agree. I can show you some side by sides if you want to do your own analysis.
      In addition, I like the fact I have really solid low light performance on the Sony and no crop. The Sony suffers when you need to do much heavier grading because its limited to 100 mbps per second for 4K (while the EOS R has a robust 400 mbps in 4K), but, I'm also a firm believer if you shoot it right, combined with ND filters and quality lenses, you can get incredible results, with either system.
      There's a lot of back and forth between a Sony vs a Canon. It's really all a matter of preference, but I think the Sony's are a lot more manageable than what others are willing to let on. A person who does a really good analysis and dive into them is Gerald Undone in this video: th-cam.com/video/9E8doNzDymo/w-d-xo.html
      Quick note: The conversation gets a lot deeper when you start doing C-Log vs S-Log, 8bit vs 10bit, and using a recorder with the EOS R. Despite the crop factor, I will say the 10 bit C-Log recording on the Atomos does a really outstanding job in colors and texture.
      Hope this helps. Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions and/or want some side by side comparisons. I can also send you my settings on my A7RIII.

    Hello I switched to EOS R from 5dmark3. At the beggining I was not really impressed, until I got the RF lenses - 24-105f4. Then my jaw went of the floor when I saw the sharpness. This is really a different galaxy comparing old 5dm3. Initially I planned to leave all my old lenses used with 5dmark3 and use adaptor, but after what I saw I am putting all of them on sale in order to purchase only new RF lenses. EOS R combined with those razor sharp lenses they produced is a total 5dmark killer. The old photos are not even close to this what I am doing with eos R now. My target RF lenses now would be the 50-200 , 24-105 and 85. Before buying the 85 I have to wait to sell a house :) I know it sounds crazy but I have a small house after my mother which will be sold in next weeks, and I decided to wait with the purchase until the house is sold :))))

    The thing that really gets me with the Canon cameras is the image sensors. If I lift the shadows even just one stop the image starts to fall apart. With almost every other camera brand you can lift the shadows or exposure sometimes 6 or 7 stops without seeing any additional noise... It's absolutely crazy and so many people don't know about this. When in any high contrast lighting situation with a Canon you are screwed because if you under expose to preserve the highlights, there is no bringing it back up in post without a ridiculous amount of noise and colour shift. The Eos R would be comparable to the a7iii if Canon fixed the ISO in-variance on their sensors, removed the 1.8x Crop, and AT LEAST allowed auto focus with their 720p Slow Motion... Like jeez Canon what are you doing! Stop crippling your cameras... It's the photographer and not the camera that get the results. It's great that you as the photographer can make great use of this camera. This is the newer camera... Sony will be announcing 4 new bodies shortly. I hope Canon's pro body mirrorless will have some real specs to offer.

    One mistake many Sony users make is adapting Canon glass to e-mount and expecting auto focus to perform as intended. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about autofocus capabilities of Sony cameras and then when I ask what glass they are using, find out they are using canon. The autofocus speed and reliability of Sony on Sony is unreal. I seriously considered the EOS R but after testing out the cameras auto focus I couldn’t move that direction. I also do shoot high action sport photography so take my opinion with a grain of salt. When canon drops a mirror less that shoots 10 FPS burst with reliable fast intelligent autofocus I’ll sell all my Sony equipment and come back to the Canon ecosystem.

If he thinks the EOSR is a better photography camera than the Sony cameras he named in his video it is obvious he is just interested in posting on social media because if he was pushing his photography to the limits he would see a big difference in the image quality of a Canon compared to a A7R3 . Even a 5 year old Nikon D810 is a much better photography camera than anything Canon makes .

    I couldn't imagine giving up the better human and animal eye af, better sports tracking, much faster FPS of 8 FPS with tracking vs 3.5 FPS, low light performance, shadow and highlight recovery from the dual gain sensor design and IBIS of the sony so you can shoot hand held much more than you can with the Canon. @Matt Gonzalez What profile and editing software were you making your decisions of better color on? I've not experienced skin tones that were off or difficult to work with? The only current advantages the Canon EOS R system has is a shutter curtain that closes when the lens is off so less dust if you are not careful, 1.2 lenses (albeit much bigger and heavier and more expensive)IF you need them for even blurrier backgrounds, but because the current EOS R sensor is inferior in light gathering and resolution they actually resolve less detail than an A7R III or IV with even a standard 24-105 lens. The canon EOS R does have better low light AF in very dim conditions. If you shoot jpeg in controlled lighting or only do very minor tweaks in raw I could see the EOS R being ok especially if you have Canon glass but not if you have the option to start fresh and go Sony. otherwise the EOS R feels like a very slow dated camera that feels very limited when you go to import the images into the RAW editor and even post firmware last month the eye AF was laggy and still missed compared to the Sony.

    To each their own Matt- for a lot of things u mention, I agree with what u are saying, and I’m glad u found a system that work for u! But for me, there’s still just so many things that canon cripples with their cameras that make the EOS R such a difficult camera to choose for it’s price: no dual card slots, no 4K without a massive crop, and no USB C charging without a proprietary cable.
