  • Your mower may not need a new starter motor. Try this simple fix first. It could save you money.I'm not turning into MrMower, but this is another easy tip to help keep your mower running properly.
Tip of my awesome hat to .cotton68spc for reminding me to mention to check the solenoid too if this tip doesn't work. It's cheaper than a starter motor.

You just saved me money, I took everything apart and the starter was turning but wouldn't lift to engage the mower. I googled the part to purchase a new one and saw this video and it was that dumb terminal, now to cut this grass riding my mower not pushing for the next two hours lol, thanks brother...

I found that when I heard that clicking sound I could bounce on the seat a few times and eventually it would crank. I figured it was a loose wire or something wrong with the seat safety. Didn't think to just check the terminal. Lol. Two years of bouncing on my lawnmower and all I needed was to turn a wrench a quarter inch. Lol

  • @henrydevereux9701

Thank you, sir! My lawnmower would always start when turning the key, but it really struggled which led me to believe that something would eventually need to be replaced. Since my battery was relatively new and fully charged, I eliminated that as a potential cause of the problem. I had already begun researching how to replace the solenoid switch and the starter....and then I ran across this video! Sure enough, the nut on the negative terminal wasn't fully tightened...it was just about finger tight. I disconnected and cleaned both battery terminals really well with a wire brush (just in case) even though they were already relatively clean. I then hooked everything back up and this time, making certain that both terminals were securely tight. Sure enough, the mower fired up immediately after turning the key! Problem solved!

grease on the bolts on the battery so can get them off when the time comes. dielectric grease wud be best, but any grease will work. same with the lug on the starter motor... other electrical connections to seal out some of the water/moisture in the air. also can oil the starter ends with oil/grease so the thing spins freely. the click click is the starter RELAY that is trying, is closing the switch in the relay with low current to deal with the HIGH CURRENT of the starter motor amp draw

Here is the Video: th-cam.com/video/UEZ5bARCws8/w-d-xo.html :)))............................................................................................. 1st. Here is how you BY-PASS your Starter easily and FAST :)))).... Ignore the Solenoid, Carburetor, Fuse, Mower Deck Switch, Seat Switch, ANY Safety Switch ETC... Just get your 12V Car Charger / Starter, set at 12V 50Amps Boost, or a Good Battery or your Car / Truck... Hook the NEGATIVE Clamp to your Motor Chassis or a BIG Metal Screw close the Motor that you can find. Then Hook the POSITIVE Clamp to your STARTER Positive directly and see if your Engine will turn. If YES, then you will know your Starter is AOK, but if NO then you will need to check for other things I mentioned above, but at least you know your Starter is AOK :))). Most of the time, get a Multi-meter and TEST your Battery first. I found out that most Lawn Tractor Batteries DO NOT last long :(((. Trickle Charge them or Charge them every 3 Months if you could, to save you lots of headaches later. 2nd. You can easily Start your Engine this way as well... Just turn your Key to Run and make sure your Brake Locked, Deck Switch, Seat Switch, ANY Safety Switch ETC in the NORMAL / RUN position.... NOTE: Some older Models do not have ALL these features and some will NOT start if SAFETY features are NOT in the correct position like Seat / Brakes ETC... I hope that this will help someone :)))............................................................................................. Here is the Video: th-cam.com/video/UEZ5bARCws8/w-d-xo.html

Not just battery wires but chassis connections, power + connections to starter solonoid both sides and to the starter, ground to the stater via the chassis or directly from the battery to the starter.
Also ive notices most of the high current wires on a lawn tractor are 12 or 10 ga wires a good qulity system done with all 8ga wires will let more current flow or you can get really nuts about it and use 4ga wires. 10ga is whats put on at the factory-installed but lawn mower manufacturers use the bare minimum parts upgrade bennfits you in so many ways its going to let more current flow wires and components won't get as hot and they will last longer.
A factory replacement starter motor for my cub cadet is 270.00 usd bucks I dont need to spend
For 50 to 75 bucks I can extend the life of my equipment far past what it would do with cheap cables.
Let's say my lawn tractor used
    6' of black 10ga wire. @ .37cents a foot. 8 ga. 1.20 a foot
    8' of red 10ga wire
    14' 10 ga. 5.18 total cost
    14' 8ga wire. 16.80
    Cost
    Conectors. 10ga. 1.00
    Conectors 8ga 4 bucks
For about 20 bucks you made 350 dollars worth of tractor parts last years and years longer just by upgrade the power wires.
Power - and + and the ground connections from battery to motor
    And battery to chassis.

MORE ADVICE....... Don't go out and buy a new starter either. Take the time to disassemble the starter and clean it. Use brake cleaner to take off the dirt and oil from the inside coils. Carefully put it back together and enjoy a few more years of service before the next time you need to clean it.

Take a long length of wire, attach one end to + side of the battery, the other end tap the + side of the starter mower. Should see it turn as normal. If nothing, take the starter apart and clean the contacts on the armature and while it is apart replace the brushes. If still dead, the wiring in the armature is shot and replace the starter.

It could be the starter motor if all the connections to the battery and the starter are good. You might have to bite the bullet and have a mechanic check it out., or you could take a chance and replace the starter motor if you think you've narrowed it down to that. Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.

When I tried to start it I saw a spark, NO sound at all from the ignition and then tried it again and a POP! and some smoke fluffed out from under the hood. Could this be from it being completely soaked or did I fry out my starter somehow? MY battery is good and it was all rewired last year. Any help/suggestions would be good. I will try to check these wires as you did in the video but beyond that I am out of my league. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't really know. It might just need to dry out for a couple of days. Spraying starting fluid into the carb might help it start.

That's crazy the same thing happened to my truck after I had the oil changed . The Chevrolet dealer said I needed a new starter but after beating it with a hammer I was going to pull it off . Went to undo the battery and found the problem !!

knucklemack33 You would think if the terminal is making metal to metal contact the battery would work but sometimes you have to really tighten it down. Thanks Knuckle.

I know this is old. Thank you so much for this information and I hope to be able to refer back to it. It saved me today. I am an old woman and know nothing about any of this. hubby always did the man things. Thankfully it was only the battery and it took a charge with my trickle charger and all is good again. I will probably have to get a new one. Such a relief cause I HATE grease on my hands. But I will have to change the oil soon. WHY would they put the oil drain right flat to the body . Torro Time cutter. What a mess it will be . And then on to try and sharpen the blade. I wish I had help.

Man I was reading the comments and thought wow everyone should know that the battery cables are tight. I am on this page because I thought my starter was shot. Went to look at the negative battery cable and guess what. My dumbass hadn’t ensured my negative terminal cable was loose. Tightened with a wrench and it started up. Mr Bulletpoints is on point! Thanks bro

Hey nice video. It turned out to be a bad battery for my mower. I did everything. Cleaned up all connections, replace solenoid and check system with test light and battery tester. Not sure why but battery even charged would just take a dive and not send enough current to starter. When i replaced battery no problems.

I have a 2015 T3200 Craftsman riding mower. Ran great last fall. stored in the garage for winter, pull it out today and added fresh gas to about 1/4 tank of gas already in it. Mower will turn over but not firing or trying to start.. I took the fairly new plugs out and cleaned them up with a little sand paper on both ends of the plug, it still will not fire. Any ideas what I could check for to help diagnose the problem. Thank you ahead of time for any advice you can give me. Ric

    • @MrBulletpoints
      @MrBulletpoints  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You might try to fill the tank with good gas in case the old gas gummed up. You can also remove the air filter and spray starter fluid directly into the carburetor. Wouldn't hurt to replace the spark plug even though you cleaned the old one.

If everything is tight then it's the starter. When these starters go bad they'll act like its a low battery and loose their oomph to turn the motor over. Just ask me how I know. I'm sharing to save ya a few hrs. :)

Thank you for posting this. This helped me troubleshoot why my Cub Cadet walk behind mower would not start with a new, good and charged battery and tight connections. It clicked and made a soft squeal sound. I saw that the bolt for the ground connection to the engine block was covered with a heavy layer of accumulated dirt. Brushed some of it off and it still didn't start, but the click was much stronger and without the squeal. Cleaned the ground bolt thoroughly and all around the engine block. The mower started very strongly. I will make sure I clean the mower as often as possible.

Before you know anything you must test the component in question !
    Simple as that !
Bad Battery ??? Test it ! And Test more than just Voltage ! Test Capacity !
Same all the way down the line !
Key switch . Solenoid . Starter motor !
Of course troubleshooting will get you closer to the problem sooner !
