    Here for your delectation, is my 1st ride and review of the new 900cc liquid cooled Triumph T100 which is based on the Street Twin 900 but in a T120 frame.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Please feel free to ask questions in the comments below as no doubt I have missed out things, got things a little awry, or just not given you satisfactory answers.
    I was very lucky to be able to ride this before it is available to others to ride, so I hope that this is interesting to watch.
    Thank you once again for watching!
    Tally Bally Ho!
    P.S. Thanks again to Herts Triumph for allowing me this opportunity.

    Ok, so today was the day: I rode a bonnie. My heart was set on the T120 over the T100 because of it's better brakes, those lovely fake carbs (so much better than the fake airfilter covers on the T100), the heated grips....just love it.
    I went over to the dealership on my BMW F650GS. A 15 years old girl which is not the best for highway driving but an awful lot of fun everywhere else.
    I took place on the T120. Nice comfy seating position. Buttery smooth gears, super stable ride, perhaps a bit heavy yet very easy to flick around once moving. But after half an hour of riding it, I was underwhelmed because, strange enough, I think it is simply too powerfull. I'd say that al least 60% of the power is absolutely and utterly useless in realistic daily driving. And there's no fun having it at your disposal either because you can basically do everything you need to do in the first two gears....! As soon as you open her up, you're speeding. Instantly. I love driving on 60 - 80km/h roads, wich I would do in 3rd to have nice and low exhaust notes. But open her up for a second and you're over a 100 already. Useless. Can't even enjoy that sound of the pipes for more than half a second.
    Besides, I found the throttle to be very snappy (on/of feeling) that, combined with the tall first gear, driving through a 30km/h zone in town is pure horror. In first gear, which is very aggressive, you'd go over a bump, move your wrist a tiiiiiny bit because of the bump and off you go! So I put it in 2nd gear (where I think any bike should be when not driving away from a stand still). But 1st is so tall that driving so slow in 2nd basically means letting it idle without any throttle for not to go too fast again, which she doesn't like and starts stuttering a bit. So you add a liiiiiiitle bit of throttle, which is so freakin instantaneous, that you're speeding again. Hated it. Eventually I found myself slipping the clutch for a fair bit just to smoothen the ride. And I was in freaking rain mode!
    This might have been me; maybe I'm simply a shit driver and not used to the ride-by-wire throttle respons (which, indeed, I'm not). I come from a 650cc single cil engine which has a completely different feel (yet often referred to as on/of throttle respons, ironically...). But pretty much in any given gear on the t120, you'll use the tiniest bit of the throttle because otherwise you're speeding. And because of that, you're only a fraction away from that on/of feeling.
    Now, to get to your and @TheMissendenFlyer 's queston $1,000,000 question: T120 or T100?
    I haven't ridden the T100 yet but I'm pretty sure that it is is the engine to go with. Yes, you'll loose the twin discs. The center stand. The heated grips. The handrail and the cool carbs. Yes, you'll have the 'baby bonnie' and thus not the 'manly 1200'. But I don't think I'll give a rats ass. Because when I sat down on my beaten-up 2002 F650GS (her name is Melissa, fyi), I remembered how much more fun it is to actually be able to use the power at your disposal sometimes. To pull her through a couple of gears, throw her into a corner and letting her rawr when you drag yourself out of that corner again. Hearing the engine work and give that throttle something to live for. Because on the T120, unless you're on the highway or love driving illegal speeds, all you can do is nibble at it, and perhaps brag about the potential power of your bike without ever, yes ever, using it.
    I'll book myself a test drive on the T100 and see if I'm right.

      What an immensely excellent read... You feel about the t120, the way that I feel about much faster sports bikes... 1st gear and you are doing 75mph, which is why I like these 'slower' bikes... A lot of fun but you can use 4th gear from 40mph and enjoy the surge...
      Thanks again for your opinions, extremely well articulated and will certainly help other riders / watchers...
      Good luck in your hunt!

      You are absolutely right. I had the exact same feeling on the T120. Way too much power to enjoy in town and silly speeds in an instant without enjoying getting there. I rode the street twin, loved the handling but wanted the T120 looks. As it turned out, almost two years later, bought myself a T100 black (matt) and am looooving it. The Captain's emotions are real. Everything is on point. Especially the throttle is way more manageable. The looks, the feel, the rumble, the fun, it is all there. One of the best decisions of my life getting this bike, as it makes your heart happy. Hope you got the chance to ride one of those beauties. Ride safe, Chris

    Yo Cap. I took the plunge and bought the new T100 about a month ago, in part based on this video and others. I couldn't be happier, it's my dream bike and with modern engineering. In reference to my previous comment, the foot positioning is much more comfortable than the Street Twin. Basically, the thing is perfect for what I want. Thanks for helping make the decision really easy for me.

      It's a lovely bike, and well done for not being drawn in on the heavier but more powerful T120... The T100 is such a good bike and a lot of power snobs overlook it...

      What u think of the breaking on the t100? They say they not good

    • @RhombusLabs
      @RhombusLabs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@granto6738 It's only the front brake that could use more power. There's plenty of compatible upgrades and if you only do the front, it's relatively easy to do yourself. Run the stock ones in a bit to get a feel for them before making a decision to replace. Tbh I haven't done it yet, there's lots of other parts of the bike (aesthetic mostly) that I wanted to spend money on before a brake upgrade.

    Captain. Another t100 question. Picking mine up in June. Would getting a center stand affect its handling? I’m thinking its worth adding. Also, do you do your own maintenance on service intervals or do you recommend having triumph do it?

    The first bike I started touring on was a then new, 1969 Honda CL-175. Rode from Lansing, Michigan to Stratford, Ontario and from Lansing to Minneapolis, and a few times from Lansing to Chicago. "Cruising" at 60, 65, was somewhat straining the engine. and the seat felt like a 2x4 piece of lumber after 100 miles. We all start riding with a first bike and graduate to larger and more comfortable bikes over the years and as money permits. Right now, the ride is a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT-SE5. But there's always room in the garage for a Triumph Bonneville T120.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this would be fine for hours cruising at 75-80mph, so as a first bike it's very different... :-)

    how do you like this compared to the street twin? having ridden both, which would you prefer and why? are they both bikes you feel you could take on longer weekend rides?

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Out of this and the street twin I would buy the T100 because it looks better in my opinion, but really that's all you can take from this... Although, spokes are harder to clean especially in the winter, so the street twin would be more impervious to corrosion as less bare metal...
      I could easily take these on a long weekend, as I did with my thruxton R which is less practical... However, out of all the 900cc new bikes, I prefer the street scrambler. It's just so much more fun to ride, more direct and easier to control.. So if you like the looks of that, then go for the street scrambler instead...
      Hope that this helps and thanks for the comment!

    I've been very pleased with my T120. Yes, you probably don't "need" the extra power over the T100, but it's always there, ready to be tapped, with no gas mileage penalty. The rider modes, center stand, heated grips, sixth gear, and low grab bar are nice to have, as well. I'd say they're worth the extra money.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, all those 'extras' and standard accessories would sell it for most people, for the T120, but there's something about the character of this bike over the T120 which seems more fun... Like an eager puppy... Not sure... But excellent comment and well argued...

    ...positively delightful bike. I've always thought that John Bloor should have acquired the rights to the BSA and Norton badges too, once he'd made a few quid selling Triumphs, and produced similarly retro styled bikes using those old brands too !

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, tat would work... But I quite like the exclusivity of the Nortons. And they've kept true to the past... I prefer the modern Triumphs as they are less vibey and less likely to leak oil, but there is still something extremely evocative and romantic to me about the BSAs and Nortons...

    Jolly good review Captain. Has this release made the older air cooled T100's more desirable or less do you think and has that influenced their resale value?

      I can't see why I'd buy the older 865 over this, unless it were the Scrambler with baffle out Arrow...
      The older ones are top heavy and a lot less versatile. Fun to ride and tinker with, but these seem to be of much better build quality...

    Thanks for this. I really enjoyed your Street Twin video also. I tested it myself last year and thought "I'd buy this, but what I really want is a T100 with this new 900cc engine" because I love the pea shooter pipes, the chrome spoked wheels, and the knee pads. And they've done it! Question though, are the foot pegs further forward than the Street Twin or the same? I felt like they were too far back for my comfort on the ST and hope they're even a little bit more forward on the T100.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are more forward on this but also a little lower so my knees weren't so high up. It's because this is the T120 frame, not the street twin frame, so everything is a little bigger... Houses my frame better... :-)
      Should be perfect for you then!
      Thank you for watching and for the comment! :-)

    Hi Cap, so close to pulling the trigger on getting a T100. Can you remember if it had any death wobble if you take both hands off the bars? I have a tendency to ride no handed a lot when slowing down towards lights etc when no traffic is about. Had a Yam Bolt 950 cruiser, lovely bike but they would all wobble like crazy when riding no handed so sadly had to sell it.
    Not advocating riding no handed, just something I like to do. So, does she wobble Cap?

    • @nebojsarodic1720
      @nebojsarodic1720 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd chime in with a "nope" there, no wobble with hands off the bars, no matter the speed really.

    CR,
    I am a new rider, but an older fellow. I am considering the T100 as a first bike. I was, at one time, leaning towards the street twin because it is lighter but everyone tells me the T100 is as easy to ride. I prefer the classic style of the 100 to the ST. I have taken all the safety classes and am ready to make that purchase.
    Your thoughts since you have rode them both?

      ruben42655 yes it’s would but it wouldn’t have much instant push when over about 75mph with a passenger on. But you could rev it well and it would be more than manageable. I suppose it depends what you are used to, but it would do it fine, yes... after all, the specs aren’t bad!

    Nice review! Had to put my 2010 Triumph STR to bed for the winter here in Eastern Canada, but we have some nice back-roads around here that would be fun on that T100. Pity that people get so hung up on big horsepower when in fact 50-60hp and tons of torque are all you need for real-world riding. I once had a Suzuki VX800 that had around 55 hp to the rear wheel and there was never any shortage of power; it would easily pass a line of cars on the highway in top gear and it would top out at 115-120 mph. The only problem with my STR is keeping my driver's license cos it is so much fun to go fast on.

My SV 1000 red lines first grear at about 85 mph, a moment in 2rd and its 100 mph. Too fast for old guys like me on public streets. I think I'd find the T100 a great choice.

    Anyhow, regarding Triumphs I had a 650 Tiger 5 speed back in the day. It was a great bike for a teenager ! A friend of mine recently bought a 1200 Triumph and really likes it. It would be fun to ride motorcycles again. This basic Triumph might prove to be the ticket. Too bad that I'm getting into old man territory and lots of things hurt now. Good review again ! I' ve yet a question: On the website of triumph the width of the handlebars of the t100 is given with 715 mm. But the t120 has 785 mm. This would be a huge difference, I could hardly believe. Is that difference true, can you feel it when driving - or is it a mistake on the website of triumph? - Thank you very much for posting!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm... a difference of 6 cms? I can believe that but I didn't notice the difference... Therefore to me, it can't matter too much if it IS true and not just a typo?
      Worth asking the question though... I'll email the chaps at Triumph... It certainly wasn't noticeable though...

  • @saddle8bag
    @saddle8bag 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Better look at your R's rear brake again. Pretty sure it's the same thing they put on everything else. Brake pads just need a few miles to bed in on this T100. I'm sure it'll be fine.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough. Maybe it is the bedding in... But my Thruxton has twin pot Brembo rear brakes whereas these are single nissin ones...

    • @saddle8bag
      @saddle8bag 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Per the website's spec page:
      Thruxton R
      Brakes Rear Single 220mm disc, Nissin 2-piston floating caliper, ABS
      T100
      Brakes Rear Single 255 mm disc, Nissin 2-piston floating caliper, ABS

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right! I bow to your greater knowledge! Yes, could just be the pads need bedding in, or maybe a larger disc doesn't 'bite' quite so well? THat doesn't make sense, but that's an option maybe?!

    • @saddle8bag
      @saddle8bag 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, physics can be a tricky thing. Believe it or not, friction doesn't depend on surface area. What the surface area provides is means to dissipate heat. Overheating will cause changes to the materials under friction that lead to materials losing their friction. Think heat induced brake fade or tire slip.
      So being larger, the T100 should actually perform better under duress, all other things being equal i.e. materials & design.
      I think what may prevent the bike from having as good an initial bite is the fact that the T100 heavier bias ply tires, heavier steel wheels, and heavier brakes lead to more rotational inertia.
      When it's all said and done, the brakes still have to shed the energy from X lbs moving at Y mph, but that extra rotational inertia may be harder to overcome immediately.
      Think of why engine flywheels are weighted. It slows the speed at which the engine can speed up and slow down making the ride less herky jerky.
      On my Versys, I use the rear brake a lot in cornering, because it's bigger and has less engine braking. On my Thruxton, I mostly just roll off the gas to set my corner entry speeds. It behaves much more like bikes I've owned in the past. The Versys was something that took me some time to get used to.

      Thank you, I ended up going with the T100 black. The price difference wasn’t worth it for me and the back seat of the scrambler wasn’t up to snuff for a passenger, it’s cheaper to put different handle bars on the T100 than it is to buy a new seat for the scrambler. Still in the run in period on my engine but it’s a fun little bike and it has some poke, and sounds fantastic.

    It's gutless because Triumph installed a cam which drops off power dramatically after 4500 rpm.
    Believe it or not, if you fit a normal cam, the 900 will be almost as powerful as the T120. To me, that would be the best option, with the addition of a 6 pot caliper upfront.

      I put one of those TEC cams on order for my T100 recently. I may have it installed immediately or later, I was just assuming a limited production run. Yes, I could be annoyed that I'm not getting the full value out of the 900HT for what I paid. However, it's good there's a clear solution and the cam wasn't expensive (~$500 US) so I'm cool with it. I mean, that's way better than $1500 for the V-H exhaust that does nothing but fart louder, yes?

    Really enjoyed the review.... and would seriously consider trading up my 865 black 2014 Bonnie........ but can I just say... to many people 900cc is not quite a little bike ... but in context of your biking history makes sense. ...and 31 minutes before the filtering song.... had almost given up.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha! yes, I know. It took a while, but I like to leave little gifts at the end for those who have the stamina... :-)
      Very true, but it rides like a small bike to me, and although it's a 900cc, it still feels quite light. I, like you, would consider trading up to this if I had the 865cc just because this handles so much lighter with lower down weight...
      It's all about the money of course... I hope that you enjoy! Always ride the bike first though... :-)
      It just feels little to me, when I am rather a large person. At least it didn't feel too small to me, like the Street Twin did... The T120 frame obviously helps... :-)
      Thank you for watching and for the comment. :-)

    Great review as usual, and got me thinking that the T100 might be on the top of my list as a long term replacement for my 865SE for riding sunny day B roads, instead of the too-small ST I recently picked up cheap. As I mentioned in the T120 comments, I was thinking T120 or Thruxton.
    Today I sat on the Thruxton, feet on pegs, and you're right, the riding position would be too severe on my arthritis, so I demo'd only the T120. I loved the extra power and legroom, but missed the lightweight agility of the ST on those narrow potholed twisties. Not that the T120 wasn't capable enough, just the ST is sooo made for it. It's all about trade offs of course.
    Now I'm thinking the T100 could be the best of both worlds, especially with some after market mods to shave off a few extra pounds. Do I need the whoomf of the T120 in the real world? Probably not. And I really don't need all those little extras - I'm not planning to ride it much in the rain or cold, that's the Tiger's job.
    So I'll be demoing a T100 at Pure Triumph Woburn once Storm Doris has abated.

    Captain,
    Love that Blue & White T100. It's too bad that I won't be able to get one.

    That was fun watching yet again, I must admit Im asking why Triumph decided on this? when the T120 as the edge in all departments I think, but yet I love Triumphs so the more the better.
    Next time when you try that short rendition of Me and my shadow you may want to use a different key or a semitone higher!! All good fun , cheers

      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha! I'll bear that in mind! :-)
      It handles differently to the T120, is lighter, more nimble and lower so suits novices and smaller people better... Also is A2 compliant (with a restrictor) so should fill a niche in the younger people who want a classic styled bike, and I know of a few on Twitter, who love it...

    What's you're opinion on the new triumph scrambler & street cup.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid that I haven't tried to come to a decision on them yet... Not until I ride them, but I love the fact that there is an A2 licence compliant cafe racer bike...
      I'm a bit annoyed about the 900 Scrambler because Triumph have hoodwinked those customers that bought the scrambler inspiration kit for the Street Twin, and this 900 comes out and should be better but for a few £100 less!
      Will see how they ride... :-)

    • @ripmax333
      @ripmax333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A2 license compliant? But these triumphs are not right? You have to buy a restrictor kit..well at least as fas as i know.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ripmax333 Triumph will supply and fit the restrictor kits for free if you need the A2 compliance and will remove when you are able... Best option for everyone I think...

    is there a road test of the bobber in the works soon?

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not for a while. The press ride is in Spain this month some time. My dealer will be getting one in in January and hopefully I'll be able to ride it before an official launch.
      I might contact Triumph to see if I can ride it even earlier, but there's normally an embargo on this sort of thing so that they actual press can get better exclusives. Luckily for me, in the instance of the T100, there is no official launch so I could publish this video as soon as I had edited it...
      I'll keep people posted about the Bobber on Facebook and Twitter though, so keep watching!
      THank you for watching and for the comment..

    I read that BSA maybe making a comeback soon. Have you heard anything on that over there? As to Triumph, I think I still prefer the old, classic look of the Bonneville.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read that too... Depends on the rights and how much money they have to do it properly... Maybe ask Mr Bloor for a few tips?
      The point of this T100 is that it DOES look like the original 1959 Bonnie but with a lot of modern bits all hidden and tucked away... :-)

    • @ThomasNessman
      @ThomasNessman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Rambunctious You may have heard that some years ago that someone attempted to resurrect Excelsior-Henderson. However due to financial mismanagement, the company fell through. However, Indian, has made a strong comeback. If you have an Indian dealership nearby, you might to try one of those as well.
      Meant to ask you, have you seen many Can Am Spyder's over there? And if so, how popular do they seem to be? I'd recommend that you take one of those for a ride as well if you have any dealerships nearby.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Nessman There is an Indian dealer about an hour and a half away. I have seen some Can Am Spyders at a dealer but I've never seen any on the roads. Our roads are just too tight and twisty really to warrant something like this. There will be a few on the roads but I've never seen one.
