In many ways, FF were ahead of their time. Devin Townsend said there'd be no SYL without FF. That ultra-fast, machine gun kick drum attack is commonplace now, but it was virtually unheard of in 1995. Just for starters. As far as your other point is concerned, metal is about just about everything, rage, hate and rebellion no question, but also beauty, ambience, love, empathy etc etc. It reflects all of the good and bad about the world today....

It wasn't unheard of in 1995. Ferociously fast double bass drumming came from thrash metal, from the 80s and then it was taken to new extremes by death metal, late 80s, early 90s. FF's twist on it was to lock it in with the guitar picking, one note/one kick, so that it sounded as mechanical as possible, "industrial", indeed.

The last time I saw Burton live his voice was pretty shot. On the cleans he tended to croak rather than sing melodically. I have a feeling he didn't growl in the way modern more brutal singers do. So I think you are correct about his throat being closed.

As a singer in this genre that has written songs with the heavy and clean dynamics its incredibly hard to pull off live. FF is my favorite band my band was heavily influenced by them and let me tell before i started doing it myself i used to get pissed when burton voice would crack live on the clean parts without realizing how incredibly diffcult that is to do live because your voice is going from one extreme to another. It very much humbled me because in the studio its a lot easier because you can track the clean parts first then do all the heavy and aggressive vocals after when you play live you don't have that same luxury. I was very lucky when we played songs on our set with those same type of transitions i didn't croak live because its nit easy at all. I can tell you if you want to hear his best live performances where he was in key on the clean parts there peak years were in mid late 90's up until the early 2000s is where he started to get more shacky live more specifically 01.

By all accounts Dino, the main guitarist, is a lovely guy and he's always given me that impression.
Never been a big fan of FF, though they were pretty electric live. Except the vocals - Burton was ROUGH that gig (i think in 2012). Not sure if it is a trend or a one off, but he was very flat whenever he was doing the melodic stuff. Didnt help the other two vocalists that night were Dan from Tesseract and Devin.
Edit: i just checked and it was actually during the time Dan wasnt in Tesseract, so it was one of the two vocalists during that period that performed then.

I went through a time when I had a couple Fear Factory albums on CD (what a throwback) and was into them. They always had this type of metal going on, adding industrial + electronic elements to their arrangements. I also had a buddy at my last job who liked to listen to some of my metal discs on the clock. I would loan him artists like Dimmu Borgir + All Shall Perish, and he would hand them back as too dark or hardcore. But he was just fine with listening to Fear Factory’s music.

Fun fact, I saw them in 1995 opening for Iron Maiden. I hated them back then. But when I heard the album Obsolete (1999) I was blown away. Their best album in my opinion. If you return to them you should do Headchrusher or, even better, Shock that is their opener and a it's like being hit with a shovel right in tha bucket. I dig Fear Factory. Although, I prefer the Industrial Metal sound more similar to early Pitch Shifter, Godflesh, and Dead World.
That vocal style was really popular in the 1990's. Phil Anselmo, Layne Staley, and Burton C Bell make up a good portion of the 90's best music and it makes a good description of the decade.

Fear factory tell a story through out there albums about machines taking over humanity, so in a lot of the songs it is that narrative they are sticking with and without that context or having listened to there whole catalogue it can sound like it is just about rage. Trust me they tell an amazing story (no doubt laced with there own feelings being sprinkled through out). Yes, they're still touring - I saw them live in December. With the new vocalist, who was doing a superb job.
Fear Factory's sound was refined over the years, but I wouldn't really say evolved. Overall they have stuck very much to their particular sound. I think their newer albums are still very solid, but if you have listened to Demanufacture and Obsolete, you will definitely know what you can expect.
Well, with one notable exception. In between those two albums they released a remix-album called Remanufacture - not widely beloved by their fans, but easily the biggest outlier of all FF releases.
Some tracks straight up hardcore house, a bit of triphop sprinkled in, some pure industrial, and much more. It's not very consistent, but it's quite an interesting listen. And definitely a favourite for many of that small crossover group of people who are both into metal and techno.

Anything from the Obsolete album is just pure gold. They are so underrated especially for there part in the development in 90's metal, that sort of band like Mushroom Head that kind of skirted making it "Big" but never really crossed the line into the "Big Leagues". Rob Zombie once stated that 'Metal is an outsider's genre,' which is very true. As such, it's dealt with personal/interpersonal/societal/political, and, yes, rage. Rage does feature heavily in Thrash Metal (Metallica's "Dyer's Eve" is a great example of rage derived from familial strife arising from parental expectations that their child conform to societal norms/expectations). Being a Metalhead in the 80s was much different than being one know, because, back then, there was a lot of societal scrutiny, because of what was deemed to be its controversial content (and while I can appreciate where that concern came from, the response was often wrongly applied and too heavy handed).
There was, also, a great deal of humour. Bands like Anthrax wrote humours commentary as a way at hitting back at overbearing, establishment attitudes. Their song "Make Me Laugh' lampooned Televangelist Jim Baker for so piously preaching about his family values only to - of course - be caught with a prostitute.
It's too much to go into, but the whole "Satanic Panic" and the P.M.R.C. (Parent's Music Resource Centre, the lovely people responsible for the "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" labels, still, present on some material) were highlights of the 80s. But, I'll leave you to discover that on your own.
Now, understanding that you're a Horror fan (and I just know you're a romantic), for V-Day, you'll want to listen to "Deathmask Divine" by the Black Dahlia Murder. It's about an, actual, couple and a love that transcended death, itself. You can read about it on Wikipedia; there's, even, a picture - of the beloved - that will freeze your Scottish blood (and I say that, because it froze mine and I'm not a guy who freezes easily).
Finally, that's a fine and shiny, new lip gloss, young miss. Things must be going well!!! :)

Oh I think I might have to create a vid on the whole topic of Satanic Panic and the resistance to more extreme genres. It’s fascinating to me that anyone could be as affronted by music as some people are.
You unfortunately know me far too well already. I love the mix of horror and romance but like real romance not just sex. I am nothing if not a boring stereotype on certain subjects (she’s JUST like the other girls)
Thanks for the recommendation and yes it is. I feel like Diana Ross in my lipgloss 😆 oceans of love 💜

I don't think this song is about hate but more about anguish. This song is not about the person that wrote the lyrics, this is about a child that was born of rape and that everybody hates becuase hes a constant remainder of that to the people around him. This is not an interpretation, this what the band said the lyrics are about.

So many people say the 90s were a bad time for metal, which I have always thought was such a ridiculous thing to say. Fear Factory were groundbreaking in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, Burtons live clean singing voice wasn't great in his last years in the band. I've even seen videos of him from around the turn of the millenium where his clean vocals were pretty poor.

  • @UberNoodle
    @UberNoodle 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sadly, Burton really destroyed his voice over the years. He just couldn't do the clean vocals anymore, and then eventually, he could barely do the harsh ones. It was sad. But a lot of extreme vocalists are faced with that reality eventually. Like Matt Heafy from Trivium. He got to the point that his voice was being destroyed and he had to relearn how to do everything but safely.

Yeah I think after chatting with Melissa Cross and seeing all the singers so far, there’s definitely people I can hear sound like what they are doing is coming from bad place support wise so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s lost a good bit of his voice. Which is such a shame. Might have to find a way to do a video on this conversation. Thanks for commenting my dude 😊

`Fear Factory used to be excellent, but got progressively worse over the years. They pioneered Nu metal on the album Demanufacture, with the melodic choruses and harsh verses. Metal isn't so much about rage as it is about Catharsis.
