- It's time to finally look at some languages again and I have to say, this region has been the most challenging to prepare so far. There is such a wealth of languages in the Cacausus mountains, with some that we've talked about before, and some isolate and native to this region alone. Get comfy and let's slowly work our way through the map 💖 Before we start, though, thank you so much for all the well-wishes last week!

Yes you are back with languages and maps, love it❤ I thought of you as 2 Dutch linguist tv makers (they speak fluent Russian and Chinese) made a very interesting and touching documentary series about the new silk road through the Causasus.

Would you ever consider doing a video on a language isolate, such as Korean? I am studying it right now and it has such an incredible history, very rich and ancient, complex, and surprisingly what I would describe as a "playful" language. The script for Hangul alphabet and the other more ancient Hanja character system ( derived from Chinese characters) are both very beautiful. Hangul in particular is very easy to learn, and most fascinating is that the letters are actually a diagram of how to position the mouth, showing how to pronounce each letter. I'm also really fascinated by the 8 dialects of SK, and the differences with NK dialects ( though I don't think there's any modern information on studies of all the NK dialects). I think you'd probably do an excellent job making an asmr video about the Korean language, if that were to ever interest you.

Armenian here. Thanks so much for being so accurate, even to the point of mentioning how the Armenian Genocide even impacted spoken language in the region. Secret Armenians speak mostly Kurdish. Also a cool fact, the Hemshin are a Muslim Armenian group who still live in North East Anatolia and speak a dialect of Western Armenian. They survived in their homely mostly due to converting to Islam to escape Turkish slaughter.
I always find these language videos so interesting! It was fascinating to learn about an area that I was not very familiar with. It is sad how often in history minority languages have been suppressed/ oppressed to the point of near or total extinction. I think language tells us so much about a community’s culture, ways of thinking about the world, etc. It is a great shame that a lot of those ideas and perspectives have been lost.
What an interesting region. You mentioned Baccu in this video. That could be another video all on it's own. So much history there. Political friction due to it's strategic location. As always, a great video ❤

I'm from Georgia, and I appreciate your excellent video. One observation: In Georgia, the dividing line between Europe and Asia often lies not in the Great Caucasus Mountains but in the Lesser Caucasus or perhaps the southern border of the Caucasian republics. There is also an old version that the border should pass over the Rioni and Mtkvari rivers. It doesn't matter which version we favour, in any case, Georgia is located in Europe, not Asia.
Continental lines are often very erratic and random. After all, they are artificial, different people have different interests so they choose the version they prefer.
Saying a country is from a continent is not something that means a lot. A country is what their people make it to be.

Another excellent, very relaxing overview of languages from another very interesting part of the world - both now and from ancient times. Such a diverse language makeup. These languages are likely very core to a population dispersal and distribution throughout a great deal of the ancient world. But I think this part of the ancient world has also been seeded from a very early far western origin. The Altaic peoples are IMO descendant from Scythians in many ways, who in turn are descendant from the very far western Irish lands. This linking of Scythians with primordial roots from Ireland remains highly controversial but has lots of strong supporting information. Particularly etymologically related as well as red headed and white skinned genetics. Long story into all this but lots going for a conclusion like it IMO. Will be watching your video again - likely a few times - and later in the night time.

You should look at languages spoken in South East Asia. For example I'd love to see an analysis of a language like Thai or Burmese because to me they just look like alien runes lol.

Not that I know of, unfortunately.
I'm Russian but thanks to you (/srs) now I know how little I know about regions, languages and nationalities of my huge country. Even at school I've never learned that things and this is so sad! Our government is all head over heels of nationalistic idea "Russia is for Russians only" and they literally kills small cultures and languages. Even me: My grandma is a Komi and I don't know her mother's language! Horrible.

Armenian language is not Caucasian but Anatolian,just to make it clear.Their origin is from Eastern Anatolia and they are culturally similar to Greeks and Persians.
Yes that's what I'm saying in the video 😅 It's an Indo-European language probably most closely related to Greek.
